Kings-Hornets post-game discussion

Please don't entice me to discuss how Tyreke was not a PG in this game.

Anyways, I want to see an overall offensive philosophy by the first week of the regular season. Normally NBA teams have this by the start of the season, but Mike Brown has set NBA offense back far enough to allow such exceptions.
 
This game is exactly why last game got me so upset.

Im fine right now, I wish the Kings had one, but we didnt quit in the first quarter. We played hard, we made shots, and we lost in the last minute to a team with the best point guard in the world. Im OK with that.

Some Positives on tonights game

Nocioni proved to me that he is still, in fact, alive. I was worried about him during the pre season. Hopefully he can keep this up and have some value at the trading deadline.

Evans played great. If you saw the game, you have to be impressed. His jumper was on. It wasnt a perfect game, but it was very promising. I know he didnt play like a 'point guard' but he played like a good basketball player, and he played well.

Brockman I thought he played fantastic. I love when a player plays within himself and does the best he can with the skills he has. Thats Jon Brockman. He rebounded great, played OK D against taller players and did what he could on offense. I remember one play in particular mid way through the fourth were he took a head first dive to tip the ball to Kmart .. Those plays are huge.

Now some Negatives

Hawes still looks bad. Its unfortunate .. We really need him to figure it out, and soon. Towards the end of the game he hit the glass decently .. thats about all the positives I can take from this game.

Martin had good numbers, but the percentage was terrible. Didnt get to the line, and he missed a few layups. If he played half as good as he is capable of playing we win by a few buckets. On the bright side he rebounded well.


One last note - I love Westphal sticking with a Evans - Martin - Nocioni - Brock - Thompson lineup down the stretch. They deserve to start next game, IMO.
 
They had a chance at the end. What more can you ask for? Refs were not going to call any fouls. Martin averages 10+ foul shots a game but he shot NONE this game. That's something a young team just can't overcome. I think Evans played great! He had 22 points on 7-13 shooting! Pretty good for a rookie! On the other hand, JT had a rough game offensively. He rushed every shot and ended up 4-14 for only 9 points. He did have 12 rebounds! But all the shots JT missed were layups. He needs to learn to slow down and just put the ball in the basket. They were gimmies.:o

Beno came in and had a good stint. He had 4 assists in limited minutes, but his shot was off. Martin was 9-29 so his shot was kinda off too. No one was really shooting well. They were all hustling and scrapping till the end though. I was encouraged by the way they really took it to the Hornets! I think Evans might have gotten fouled (3 or 4 times) on that last drive but oh well... These aren't the replacement refs right??

The one thing that really sticks out to me is the fact that when Hawes was OFF the floor, the Kings got better defensively. They went after him every time he came in and they got easy buckets. Brockman was far and away a better defender at the center position as was May. Hawes needs to get up to speed defensively or he isn't going to get any minutes. His offense isnt that good and his defense is putrid right now. I think he will get better over time, but there is a clear reason why he isn't starting. His Defense is so poor that it brings down the whole teams defense. Until he picks up his game and starts playing better defense, he is only going to get limited minutes like he did today. Hopefully Spencer can play his way back into the starter role.

We've only played two games and already I'm more excited about this season than any time since Rick Adelman left the team. Our young Kings are going to give us thrills and excitement, heart-pounding fun and yes, more than a few close and frustrating losses. But at the end of the night, we'll be walking out of Arco a little disappointed after a loss but still full of hope and optimisim for what is yet to come.

It's the beginning, folks. Grab a seat now and watch as the wagon fills behind you.

Agreed. You know, somehow, this is the happiest i've ever been with a Loss. I'm the kinda guy who would usually be pissed about a loss even if it was a good game... But this was just awesome. This team will be back in the playoff run shortly.. Stand by, ladies and gentlemen!

Whenever some dramatic shift like this happens I picture Stern and the refs in secret backroom meetings deciding to "adjust" the fouls called on everyone but Kobe and LaBron "for the good of the game". :p

If I misinterpreted your comment, I sincerely apologize. I truly thought you were making some kind of sarcastic comment, most likely because there were a lot of them last year when the "any questions" threads were posted.

I didn't notice that you weren't here last year.

If I am Hawes, and I realize I've been pretty worthless so far, then I am making myself the Martin assist machine to get playing time. Kevin is going to continue to shoot poorly if he has to get his own shot.

Just 2 other quick observations:

Really liked the way Westphal coached this game. He gave them a chance at the end. Substitution patterns were good. Martin played a lot but they needed him.

Evans might be our new go to clutch shooter. He hit 2 late that were money. He isn't afraid to take and make clutch shots. Tonight was a ROTY type performance. :)

Oh, no problemo :) I did, afterall, make a couple comments questioning Tyreke the other night. I see why you would think I was being sarcastic here.

But I wasn't serious about it. I'm very happy with our draft pick. And, he was amazing today, although... I wish he got a bit more assists today.( which i guess he WOULD have if some teammates didnt brick so many layups)

As far as I'm concerned, i have NO questions :-)

Oh and btw VF, I was here for a long time now.. I did some trolling before (i dont know if you remember the "Link?" thing) Lol

But I'm not going to troll my teams board again

Well, the Kings certainly don't like defense. Though their transition D was much better this game than versus OKC. They never stopped the ball versus OKC.

Both teams were shooting very well in the first half and then started to trail off. I can't give full credit to the defenses, as Martin was not taking good shots.
 
I thought the team as a whole played well tonight.. Much better than expected.. Offense was stagnant but they did play with some heart.. Hope it carries over to tomorrow.

Me TOO! I hope they build on this game and carry it into tomorrow's game. It is a back to back, so they are going to have to play through the fatigue. Martin played almost 42 minutes! This game has me excited about the Kings!!

I don't want to offend Gary, so I won't give you the count of how many times tyreke made a good pass to Thompson, Martin, Nocioni, etc. and they missed the shot. There are two parts to an assist. One is the person passing the ball to someone in the right position. The other one is the person making the damm shot. The passer is responsible only for the pass, not the making of the shot.

wednesday's stat line made Westbrook look like the next coming of Chris Paul with 12 assist. At least half of those assists were three pointers. If they're missed, he has an ordinary game with 6 assists. I'm not discounting what Westbrook did. I'm just saying that there is an ellement of luck.

Well said... people seem to forget the shooting part of the assist. I thought Tyreke did a great job at the PG... as the coaching staff see more of the team and its capabilities more PLAYS will be developed. Some guys here seem to forget that this is a new coaching staff and a bunch of new players.... were not gonna have half court sets overnight here.

Tyreke showed good court awareness...
 
Fun game.

Tyreke was fearless at the end of the game. He wanted the ball in his hands. He was also fearless and effective playing against the best pg in the NBA. He was a defensive force in this game.

I love Brockman. It's fun to see players bouncing off of him rather than the other way around. I hope he's with this team for a long time.

The chippies that were missed around the basket were incredibly frustrating. I hope Thompson cures himself of that this year.

Hawes was a Virtual DNP. Still waiting for him to show up.

All this team has to do is continue to work hard, listen to the coach, and develop some cohesiveness. They might not be rewarded by a lot of wins this year, but they sure will be appreciated by the fans.
 
We can clearly see the team wants to win with the hustle plays and rebounding, the offense will smooth out in time
 
Regardless of wether he was a PG or not... he was still the best player on the floor for our team. People here just want to knick pick at any part of his game because he isn't who they wanted picked.

Rubio would be molested in the NBA... Evans does the molestation... that's why we picked the guy.

Last time I checked defense wins games and their is no question about who is and will always be the better defender... not to mention Evans can gaurd two or three positions on the floor.

Couldn't agree more, but I don't know about the luck part. Part of Tyreke not getting assists is because he's learning the offense and the other teamates. But part of it is also because the players that receive the pass need to get comfortable with the passer rather than the other way around. They will come to anticipitate the pass and be better prepared tom make the shot. But part of it is also that these players have just got to learn how to finish in the paint. To me, Thompson's career is going to depend on him learning one thing going forward - finishing in the paint. If he does that, he's a very good power forward. If he doesn't, then he's mediocre. It's as simple as that.
