Kings Have Signed John Salmons - Bye, Bye Bonzi!!

his stats are damn close to career ones:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3254/career;_ylt=Au0nXS6xzweOE0f.2qH85MOkvLYF

bear in mind his loss of minutes in Memphis and your argument absolutely does not hold water. Also, 33 or 34 year old guys do not decline all that quickly. Shaq and Zo helped win a ring, despite declining they can still contribute, even against young centers that, the theory would, decline faster. Also, your position means that we shouldn't keep either Ron or Mike since they'll both be close to Bonzi's age when their contracts are up.
ps the reigning 2x mvp is 2 years older than bonzi, garnett and duncan are roughly the same age (and god save us if we got those 2) and sam cassell, by your estimation, is dead.

i could go through other productive older players, but i think you get the point. also, what good, contributing players fell off at 32 or 33 (and not due to injury, which is a risk at any age)?

i am sorry that you have miss read what i have said. i said the reason he will decline is because he relys on pure physical strength and he can't make up for his age in other categories such as shooting and ball handeling. nash can shoot lights out. garnett and duncan are excellent players but you have to agree duncan is not the same player he once was. his skills are declining parallel to his age. shaq and zo's skills are also declining but they are such big players the still contribute a lot. bonzi's skills are very limited and he is NOT going to be worth 8-10 million a season in a few years. he missed 30 games last season for crying out loud. why do you not understand the reason bonzi did so well is because it was a contract year. hes had 2 career years both in contract years. hes hungry for the money which is why he plays so well in contract years!

5yrs $25mil.

That was what I assumed it would be. Just made sense from all the evidence.

And...damn. 5yrs $25mil for 5pts 2rebs 2ast.

of course his numbers are going to be low when playing with webber and iverson. this guy has tallent and a great basketball iq. there is a reason the suns and raptors both wanted him. he has great potential. its like the stock market with players, buy low sell (trade) high. he WILL be worth the money. just watch!

jerryaki did you ever happen to think petrie couldnt get anything back in return he wanted or we needed and that is why we didnt do a bonzi sign and trade? you do not know what goes on behind the scenes. Same thing with Mobley last summer why take back guys we dont want? There is nothing wrong with letting a guy walk instead of signing in this case an old bonzi wells and yes he is an old 30 and will be broken down in two years so giving him a five year deal would have been crazy.

people will see the Martin,Salmons,Douby combo will be good for his team because they are all young and athletic and I would rather have those guys that play on the wing and can run and jump and are athletic to go along with Ron who is a post up guy than to have bonzi out there who does the same thing as Ron.

His numbers last year with Webber and Iverson were the best of his career, and they were sad.

He's sure is a summer league All-Star though,l so maybe we can continue to dominate the VSL.

I'll be watching. Unlike some, I always am.

granted. but did you stop to think that we have other pressing concerns, like a front court that can't do diddly squat on defense? letting a guy walk sucks, and a GM should try his best to salvage it. the pacers were able to get at least a trade exception for peja (which will net them harrington now).

for the money we just threw at salmons, we could've had elson and jackie butler, plugging a much greater need. let the summer leaguers fight out for the 1-3 spots if you're going with the youth movement. salmons is not bringing what these kids aren't already.

Looks like you're right. Yikes, $4.4 mil is quite a lot.

fyi the 06-07 MLE is set at $5.215 million. Salmons got 84% of the cap. We have $815,000 left on the cap. The league minimum was $641,748 for a one-year vet last year. Essentially, we can offer a tiny amount more than the league minimum, which we could offer to anyone anyways to begin with. So, from a fan's vantage (ie the impact on the players tha could be added) Salmons is the only player we could get for the MLE. The Maloofs however (you know, the people we're buying an arena for) got to save about $800,000. I guess we can be thankful for that.

exactly. he is improving each year. and he did decent playing with iverson and webber. players always get better once they come to sac. he will be worth the money.

Lots of money for not much. Im shocked. What is happening to our amazing GM and our amazing owners...

Bummer

Welcome to town Salmons prove us wrong and earn your cash.

Well, at least something happened. Bonzi seemingly wanted too much money. If we weren't going to keep him it makes sense to bring in someone with some experience to come off the bench at the 2/3 and maybe 1. Garcia is currently injured and is young and inexperienced. Now Salmons does not address our front court needs, but what free agent was out there that would really solve those problems? None that would get enough minutes to really matter here. If we are going to get that guy on the front line to really help us out we are going to have to trade for him. Lets hope it really happens. We need a starter and it wasn't going to come with that money. Salmons is a decent pick up, nothing to get too excited about, nothing to commit suicide over.

im not mad that bonzi is gone.... im not mad that we signed salmons.... im mad that we signed salmons before somehow getting a bigman....

my kandi signing looks really sweet right now...

SacKings384 - His demands may have exceeded his potential value for a lot of teams. Most of the Western Conference doesn't have any money to spend for him anyway and he'll end up signing for LESS than the Kings offered to begin with.

He's free to sign with anyone, but likely for less than the Kings offered. And since GP apparently did not get a decent S&T offer, either no one else thought Bonzi was worth what he wants or they just wanted to dump crummy players on us. Does it suck? Yes, but do people seriously wish that GP had done a S&T no matter how crappy?

Exactly. Bonzi, to quote Sara Evans:

You dug your grave now lay on back

I really wanted you to return, but after Webber, Mike, and Brad, I am sick and tired of overpaying players. I'd rather give Salmons $4 million per year and keep some kind of financial sanity than give Bonzi $10 million for 5 years.

Keeping $800 k might not be a bad move. Instead of being able to offer only the league minimum we are able to offer somewhat more, if it comes down to it.

GP said more moves are anticipated this offseason, maybe not in so many words, but that is the impression I got during the interview.

*claps* More overpriced movable pieces-

For anyone that cares-

Were going to costco to buy pitchforks, wood sticks, rags, kerosine, and matches.

The march to Arco is tomorrow at 2pm.......

just make sure to take out the #6 statue before the cops show.

This is a good move, guys. I said it in the other thread, but this seems to be where the party is.

I know it'd hard to see a player who just had a monster playoff series go, but I think with Martin waiting behind him at SG that this was the right move.

I agree with the Pacer fan.... and not the majority of the " Argmageddon is here" posters.

Bonzi was asking for an insane amount of money and he said no to several offers. Bonzi going is the best thing for this teams future. Saved alot of money down the road.

Salmons isnt as bad as he is made out to be. Yes hes overpaid by a million or 2 but Id rather have him backing up Biby then Hart or House.

What people aren't getting is thet we just DID do a sign and trade...for John Salmons at $5mil per. While canceling our MLE along the way.

How much crappier was it going to get? The Foster and Jasikvecius deal looks like solid gold by comparison.

We lost everything in one gulp -- Bonzi, whatever Bonzi could bring in an S&T, our remaining caproom, and our MLE. As long as we were being cleaned out, the least they could have done was remove that obnoxious giant gold 6 on the front lawn while they were at it.

Confuscious say team that trade Bonzi Wells for John Salmons straight up be team going in wrong direction.

Well Brick I think we all agree that losing Bonzi for nothing is bad but you have to admit that it's Bonzi and his agent's fault too. They were practically holding our team hostage because we couldn't sign anybody because Bonzi wouldn't make up his mind/sign with us. He never really gave us an answer, it's like he was just messing with us and then Geoff said "screw it, I'll make this guy pay for messing with me" out of frustration. You're underrating Salmons though, atleast I think you are. We might have over paid but he's versatile and he turned down similar/bigger contracts in TO and PHX to be here. He must like our team right? Give the man a chance.

a) i have no idea of the relevance of Bonzi's agent to the plight we find ourselves in. They certianly make likely villains (although without knowing the numbers, who knows), but that helps us not at all -- if it was the Tranvestite Munchkin Sewer Trout Alliance that brought this about, we would still have come out losers.

b) no he didn't turn down bigger contracts to come here. Ours was the biggest. Hence likely why he is here. Phoenix and Toronto were both at $21-$23mil. Have no idea why we wasted money topping them actually after Toronto bowed out -- where else was he going to go?
