Kings Have Signed John Salmons - Bye, Bye Bonzi!!

The Sixers didn't even WANT Salmons back! He had NOWHERE to play and in the article released about how he nixed the deal with Toronto it says "Salmons has very few options left and as of right now may not have a guaranteed contract next season" Wow... A full MLE on a guy who might not even HAVE A CONTRACT?

Salmons also turned down a Suns offer.

Who knows. We don't know the length or amount of the deal yet right?

Still, not a very good surprise.

Hope Ron's taking this OK.

[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]After 12 days of quiet for the Kings in the free agency period, they signed four-year small forward John Salmons on Monday.
The move means free agent shooting guard Bonzi Wells will not return. Wells and his agent, William Phillips, had been in negotiations to return since July 1. The Kings also signed rookies Justin Williams (University of Wyoming forward) and Eugene "Pooh" Jeter (University of Portland point guard), both of whom played well on the Kings summer league team in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The acquisition of Salmons - the 6-foot-6 talent formerly of the Philadelphia 76ers who has averaged 5.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 18.4 minutes - marks the second straight season in which the Kings swooped in quickly to pick up a player after a deal ended badly with another team.
Salmons reneged on a sign-and-trade deal with Toronto last week, in which he was to get a five-year, $23 million contract. He had also been offered $22 million by the Phoenix Suns in a sign-and-trade. Last season, Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie quickly signed forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim after a deal sending him to New Jersey fell through. Within the past few days, word had spread that the talks between the Kings and Wells' representation were not going well. Wells, who was reportedly offered a five-year $36 million offer by the Kings at the start of negotiations, clearly wants more than the Kings were willing to offer. Phillips did not immediately return a call for comment.

-----------He turned down some hefty contracts from other teams. If what everyone says is true, that he is trash, why are other teams offering 22 and 23 million to get him?? Things that make ya go hmmmm.......

Oh, BTW-

Welcome to Sacramento, Mr. Salmons. I hope you have the best years of your career here...Im looking forward to see what you can contribute to the team.

KT and Corliss both get $6M+ for a bunch of years so not likely they are going anywhere this year. Pot I think is a keeper and the main 5 backup. Hart is an odd man out I think

Thats about the extent of my comments.

But maybe we're all wrong?

Defense is overrated...Rebounding is overrated.

Just count our titles!!!

Oh wait...Nevermind.

My sentiments as well. A clear head rises out of the swamp.

Here is current roster as of 5:00pm ALL 17 of them!!!!
1 22 Louis Amundson F 6-9
2 93 Ron Artest F/G 6-7
3 8 Quincy Douby G 6-3
4 32 Francisco Garcia G/F 6-7
5 44 Eugene “Pooh” Jeter G 5-11
6 23 Kevin Martin G 6-7
7 7 Ronnie Price G 6-2
8 40 Justin Williams C 6-10
9 3 Shareef Abudur-Rahim F 6-9
10 10 Mike Bibby G 6-2
11 32 Francisco Garcia F 6-7
12 5 Jason Hart G 6-3
13 52 Brad Miller C 7-0
14 20 Vitaly Potapenko C 6-10
15 7 Ronnie Price G 6-3
16 9 Kenny Thomas F 6-7
17 34 Corliss Willaimson F 6-6

The CBA only allows a max of 15. And this does not include camp invitees. Starters in bold

You have Ronnie Price at 7 and 15, so we're only one over...

Like nbrans said, three of the best front offices in the league were after Salmons. I think that Petrie is shifting towards a Suns-like system, with Artest as our Marion. Clearly we do not have a Stoudemire, or even a Diaw, but I think he would acquire those players if he could. Of course, the Suns system was pretty similar to our team led by Divac/Webber, only with more PG penetration.

Anyway, I have to think that if he could get defensive specialists at the 4/5 like the Mavs, he would. Or, if he could garner the kind of rebounding versatility of a Diaw, Petrie would do that as well. I still do not think that Miller will be in a Kings jersey next year.

Yeah, I don't even think we'll make the playoffs next year or even be in the running to make the playoffs.

Count this as my prediction

Well, I don't expect so badly. The amazing rise on the late season was mainly made by added Artest, huge-developed Martin, developed Garcia, and finally-suited Rahim, not by Wells. I like Wells, but last year he had injuries during the season. He shined at the early season, and the playoff.

I think we're a still playoff team, not sure whether we can go further.

However, I'm quite disappointed at signing with Salmons, especially full MLE. :(

Yes the Maloofs lied yet again

The Maloofs lied? Because they don't want to pay Bonzi a Peja-like contract?

Good lord, people. This is NOT the end of the bleeping world.

And look! In all the furor, you missed it!

We got POOH!!!

;)

Seriously, lighten up, folks. There was a very good chance, based on Bonzi's playoff performance AND Peja's unbelievable deal, that Bonzi would want more than the Kings or any other team with a modicum of sense would want to pay. It sure seems like Petrie tried to negotiate a deal that Phillips and Bonzi just weren't going to take.

It happens.

We'll survive. And, again, remember - Salmons might well turn out to be just fine. We don't know yet.

Remember last year? The fuss about Wells? How he would destroy the franchise?

We signed Justin Williams and Pooh Jeter. It's still only July. Let's see what else happens before we start jumping off bridges.

Wow. I'm a pretty big King fan, watch a lot of NBA games and I can not picture Salmons on a basketball court. No recollection.

Bonzi played well for the Kings last year, and made a tough tandem with Artest. It defies logic that he would let money dictate his career at this point. Sorry, but he could have lived a good life off the Kings offer and played for a competitive team at the very least.

A b.s. move by Bonzi. Loyalty matters to me, and I feel he owed teammates a commitment to go to battle with them. It's not life in 2007 I guess, but it should be. His greed ultimately will ruin the Kings at this point. We have no boards or athleticism up front. It's what we needed when CW was traded (and ignored then, too). It's such an obvious need, but NEVER IS it fixed.

Ouch. I'm pissed at Bonzi. I'm pissed at the Kings for apparently being maroons when it comes to stacking a team. More and more I think they were damn lucky that Vlade was better than they knew and more importantly had a winner's charisma (from his Magic days) that inspired Webber to be great and led to a furious rise of the franchise. It wasn't Petrie's brilliance. It may have simply been luck.

ouch. who is john salmons, again?

Cut the guy a friggan break, Petrie obviously tried as hard as he could to keep Bonzi, it was Bonzi who wanted more money. This can also save us from our future, you have to remember Bonzi is thirty, in 2 to 3 years hes not going to be pulling down rebounds like he did last season.

Whats with all the Salmons bashing? We haven't even seen him play on this team yet, give the guy a chance, We now have Kevin Martin starting which is a plus.

We'll survive. And, again, remember - Salmons might well turn out to be just fine. We don't know yet.

No kidding....I have not heard this much outrage since I was living in Dallas and the Mavericks picked-up some second-string, second-rate point guard from the Suns to try and fill the shoes of Jason Kidd.

Going cheap, might as well rebuild and trade Miller and even Bibby. Why do we always let good FA's walk w/o getting anything in return?

FYI - I was told the following:

He did not get the full exception...He is now our backup pg, and Musselman is VERY,VERY high on him. He was pushing for Salmons.

As always, take that for whatever you think it might be worth.

I think the outrage has alot to do with the contract. If this is indeed our entire MLE than we just locked up pretty much the same guy we have drafted the past 2 years to a long term deal.

We need help rebounding and on the interior and this doesn't do either....the main question is why???
