Kings Have Signed John Salmons - Bye, Bye Bonzi!!

Could'nt we have done a S&T and get some peices in return atleast letting you're valuable FA walk for nothing is the worst thing you can imagine.

Petrie did say that we have a little bit left btw. He didn't sound like it was likely though but that may just be Geoff being Geoff.

I watched almost every single Sixers game last year and I can tell you... Salmons can definately score... inconsistantly. Bad move by management, if Bonzi wanted a little more I would have tried to accomidate him even if it we were already offering him the most anyone could. The guy was a flat out beast against one of the best defensive and rebounding teams in the league, during the most important time of the year. Bonzi deserves some blame too though... it definately seems all the people that were saying Bonzi really wanted to stay and that he was a different guy now were completely wrong. What a shocker .

FWIW Geoff said we/Kings offered, Bonzi offered, we upped it one or more times and it didn't work.

The real question is how much would it have taken? Of course we'll never know, so all we can do is speculate, but John Salmons... if we did use the MLE or most of it on him just smacks of being cheap, not wanting to pay Bonzi enough to keep him and then throwing a lesser contract at the next best swing man that was available at the time. This just looks stupid to me, and about 75% of this board. It definatley doesn't look like a team willing to do anything to win a championship... but let's be honest they haven't looked like that in years.

Why is Petrie getting blamed for this when this is clearly has Maloof fingure prints all over this. From what I am reading and what VF says that there will be no sign and trade that means that we did not want to get salary back. This is talent bleeding all over again because the Maloofs not Petrie did not want to spend money. The Maloofs lied yet again and we are blaming Petrie for this:mad:   . The Maloofs are the ones that did not want Bonzi back at market value. also people who said we could get better a SG on market then tell me who. I know people have mentioned Ariza but Orlando already said they would match any offer of MLe or lower.

I have been saying for a long time now that we will NOT re-sign Bonzi because Maloofs have become tightasses that are more concerned about luxury tax than winning. I got shot down in flames by those that know best  because Maloofs were apparently going to give their guy (read Musselman) every chance to win and they said they wanted Bonzi back. HOGWASH!!!!!!

Maloofs have over the years shown that they are not willing to sign their own FAs. We have lost a LOT of talent over the years because they didn't want to pay up. They are fast becoming the laughing stock of the NBA with their Sterling like financing

Look, Bonzi said he wanted to come back and that he didn't care about the money. Well, that is looking like hogwash right now. He obviously was frustrated at what we were offering him. Petrie gave him an offer that was higher than anyone else's. Bonzi didn't accept.

What else could Petrie have done??

Petrie decided to move on, before even more FA's were off the board. We couldn't wait all summer for Bonzi to decide. He got a young player who can play 3 positions, and most importanty, can play PG. Our backcourt is now set for the next 3 seasons or so. The offseason isn't over, we can still make trades and use whatever of the MLE and LLE we have left. We aren't done yet.

The Maloofs lied? Because they don't want to pay Bonzi a Peja-like contract?

Good lord, people. This is NOT the end of the bleeping world.

And look! In all the furor, you missed it!

We got POOH!!!

;)

Seriously, lighten up, folks. There was a very good chance, based on Bonzi's playoff performance AND Peja's unbelievable deal, that Bonzi would want more than the Kings or any other team with a modicum of sense would want to pay. It sure seems like Petrie tried to negotiate a deal that Phillips and Bonzi just weren't going to take.

It happens.

We'll survive. And, again, remember - Salmons might well turn out to be just fine. We don't know yet.

Remember last year? The fuss about Wells? How he would destroy the franchise?

We signed Justin Williams and Pooh Jeter. It's still only July. Let's see what else happens before we start jumping off bridges.

Indeed, Petrie even talked about a trade or two supposedly, right?

I like Garcia. IMO he was on even terms with Kevin in all around contribution to the team BEFORE he sprained his damn ankle. He was driving and dishing, had heart and played defense. His long arms were a factor and he didn't have the benefit of a year of professional level body building to add muscle.

He shot like hell last year, but if that comes around for him and we lose him I believe the team will regret it. Could they possibly keep him now?

2 words: "Youth Movement."

I guess all the talk of blowing up the team and rebuilding pre-Artest finally got to Geoff's head. This roster looks very very young, and would look nice if we were a lottery team instead of an annual playoff team. Keep Bonzi and move Brad, we could contend. Now, any moves we're going to make are going to have to mean shuffling talent. Not only is this a decline in talent but a loss of a potentially valuable trade piece, which is why this may be the last move of the offseason- we can't trade Kevin, Mike, or Artest for a big. Essentially, someone has to want either Kenny or Brad if we want our shotblocker. Bonzi kept that hope alive, but now it's gone. With that in mind, I think that this roster looks like Geoff is banking on Amundson or Williams becoming a legit player to step in at some point next to Salmons and Martin- after, of course, Mike, Ron, Reef, and Brad have started to fall off in talent. Firing Adelman also makes more sense- he's probably not gonna want to rebuild again, and most teams get new coaches for bringing in a young batch of kids. Musselman seems to be the one to do that. If these moves this summer all pan it, it will be for the future. Ron Artest and Mike Bibby will not win a championship in Sacramento.

Or I could be entirely wrong and we could get Dwight Howard tommorow.

Who said that? Salmons will likely be backup 1/2, and Garcia the 2/3. That's like arguing Bobby vs. Hedo, etc.

Garcia brought the ball up the floor in probably half the games he played last season. Salmons career high in assists is 2.7 in 25 minutes per game. Doesn't scream "backup point guard" to me.

Bobby is 6'1". Hedo is 6' 10". Salmons is a 6'6" 2, 1 and 3. Garcia is a 6'7" 2, 3 and 1. They're not that much different.

One more thing. As a starter:
Garcia: 10.6 PPG, 38 min, .392 FG%, .219 3p%, 5.8 RB, 2.8 AST, 1.3 St

Salmons: 9.5 PPG, 32 min, .465 FG%, .400 3p%, 3.5 RB, 4.0 AST, .8 ST

Salmons is in his fourth full year and Garcia is in his first. Obviously Salmons is more efficient at this point and his assists are better, but I'd lay money on a second year Garcia putting up similar numbers in similar minutes.

When did Petrie say anything about making future trades? I thought he mentioned that a sign and trade was unlikely because the additional salary would put us over the luxury tax.

first, i went out to buy dinner for an hour and i come back and all hell has broken loose. well done, geoff/maloofs!

second, didn't salmons step in for C-Webb a few times last season? I could've sworn that was the case; someone had him in our fantasy league...

When ever a player or his agent say that then you know they are telling fibbs. There is not a player out there that thinks its not about the money. They all know its about the money but not many of them say it publicly. Those that do are often ridculed and made out to be mercenaries.

From what I've gathered, because AI and Iguodala were ahead of him and had larger roles, and did most of the ballhandling on the team.

^^ well, the only guy i know who was telling the truth about that was pryzbilla, and i respect him for it. said "portland was the only place to give me a shot, i'm staying with them" and he kept his word.

From a Sixers fan on Realgm:

"Gentlemen and Ladies:
I almost feel bad for you, but considering our experience with C-Webb's defense, one good turn deserves another.
John Salmons is universally hated in Philadelphia as a dog with an attitude. He is arguably the worst defensive player to wear a Sixers uniform in the recent history of the franchise, worse that C-Webb and with none of the class and heart.
He single-handedly lost 5-10 games for us last year by his lack of hustle and his matador defense. Allen Iverson calls him a 'girl'. We can't wait until Ron gets his piece. And he makes Kenny Thomas look like an all star. You've got him for three years? four years? five years?
Good luck. We'll be watching closely."

most encouraging. Clarifies why Petrie likes him a bit tho

Hmm...I sincerely doubt it. Maybe you are thinking of Shavlik Randolph or Steven Hunter?

Salmons is a guard, not a great body, not tall or strong enough to remotely contend on the front line. Poor rebounder for a guy his size, and his size is only 6'6". Can swing occassionally to SF, kind of, but even that is a stretch.

This is encouraging news. Wonder what Artest will call him...
