Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie says that the NBA has granted the team salary cap relief for 2008-09 and 2009-10 on the contract of Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Abdur-Rahim will still be paid his salary, $12.8 million over the two years, but by an insurance company because of career-ending knee problems.

Ya know, it kind of drives me crazy when people paste RealGM links. All they do is swipe content from newspapers, and it just takes one more click through to find the link for the underlying article. Particularly with the great work that Sam Amick has been doing digging up this information can't we at least give him the credit and clicks?

sacbee links don't work for me sometimes. Plus, RG sums up what we are looking for in the article.

This is actually a pretty big development - we get the relief for this year's cap as well as next year's. This gives us in the region of $6M of breathing space under the luxury tax threshold, meaning that if we want to make a deal or two, we can take back a bit of salary and not panic. That breathing room is nice next year, too.

(This also opens up tax room to take on some bad contracts from Washington in return for their #1 this year, if it's true they're selling for cap relief, but I won't hold my breath.)
