Kings Announce Shareef Abdur-Rahim is new assistant GM

SACRAMENTO, CA, October 7, 2010 -- The Sacramento Kings have added Shareef Abdur-Rahim to the team’s front office as an Assistant General Manager, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Abdur-Rahim, a 12-year NBA veteran, spent the previous two seasons behind the Kings’ bench as an assistant coach.

“I’m thankful that the Maloof family and Geoff Petrie have the confidence in me to provide the opportunity to continue to be a part of the Kings’ organization,” said Abdur-Rahim. “My family and I love this area and are excited to be involved with this young and upcoming team.”

Um, ok.....

Well, I always had considerable doubts about him as a coach and considered his hiring to be a pity hire. No way to know as a GM. Might as much as anything just reflect Geoff's comfort level with another low key semi-classy personality.

It just makes you wonder what exactly they see are the qualifications for the job considering SAR has one year of experience outside of playing basketball and then you have Bobby Jackson doing what ever it is that he does trying to move up the ranks (And see as how I don't know how either one of them are as professionals let alone "basketball operations minds"). Now, in the big scheme of things I do not think this matters anyways when it comes down the making the big decisions.

The funny thing is when you get down to it one of the reasons why I am willing to aggressively challenge the decisions of any and all front office types is because there almost ARE no qualifications. Much of it is just a jock old boy network. There are 1000s of people out there with at least as much basketball knowledge as many of the guys hired, but just without the connections. So played in the league, spent a couple of years as a development coach, and a generally nice guy who fits my (Geoff's) personality? You're hired. Get me some coffee.

Does not hurt that as an internal hire without any other resume he probably works cheap. ;)

Yeah, it DOES really make you wonder what goes on behind close doors. Reef, with all do respect...was probably where he should have been...unless they consider him to be a young Wayne Cooper type of person. I know Reef is a very grounded individual with a good head on his shoulders, so I wish him well. I also thought B-Jax would be considered for a position like this...maybe they bring him in as assistant coach, now that Reef has a new position??

This hiring sure came out of the blue. I am a little puzzled by this decision, I guess that's why they are the GM's and we are not. They must see something that we don't, atleat I hope so.

From what I've seen of workouts vids and such I've been very impressed with Reef's work as a coach. We've even seen some results on the court from the likes of JT and Hawes. They both added a little bit of that signature spin move out on the court!

Kind of a surprise, that on the surface doesn't really matter much, unless it creates a void as far as coaching bigs goes. I can't imagine that Reef is indespensable though. Whether he's qualified or not is anyone's guess. You look around the league and just about every GM is an ex-player. Just about every coach as well. Maybe he's impressed management with his ability to judge talent. Or, maybe with Donte coming into camp at 260 pounds, and everyone being surpised, they decided they needed someone in management to keep closer track of what the players do, and how they do it, during the summer. Especially with such a young team.

I sense displeasure and a lack of respect for Reef and GP in the above comments. Why? Sounds good to me. Why do people major in NBA basketball if they can't get ahead and improve themselves and the job they do.
