Kings get DDV, Trey Lyles, Josh Jackson & trade Marvin Bagley III to Pistons in 4 team trade.

On a positive note:

If DDV can get healthy and if any of (Fox/Mitchell/Jackson/Lyles) can learn to shoot the three this team could be very good. We have some defensive length to put around Sabonis

On the other hand, if the current percentages play-out/continue in terms of 3 point shooting things could be really fugly
Sabonis 32.4
Lamb 33.3
Jackson 26.5
Lyles 30.1
DDV 28.4
Fox 26.9
Mitchell 32.0
Metu 27.1
Davis 32.9

Holiday 37.9
Barnes 41.2
outside of Barnes and Holiday.......This roster is a collection of some really really bad shooting.........

3pt shooting year over year is ridiculously noisy. I'm not worried the slightest about spacing anymore. Ddv, holiday, lamb, Lyles are historically good shooters and should fill the spacing void left by Hali and Buddy without much issue.

The most important thing is that they've got reputations as shooters so they're just going to draw defenders away from the paint to let Domas and Fox work.

DiVincenzo is an advanced impact stat darling (outside of this year). Very good buy low pickup and can be a solid fit next to either Fox or Mitchell (assuming he can bring his shooting back up to last year's % which was 38%). He has the tools to be a good shooter, good passer, good rebounder, & good defender. He's also pretty athletic as well. The only thing he's not good at is being a go-to scorer, but he has the potential to be an excellent glue guy that does all the things to help you win.

Lyles is also not a bad pickup either. Solid bench, stretch 4. And we have a team option on his $2.6 mil salary next year. Jackson likely won't see the floor much but he is an expiring.

A very good use of Bagley IMO.

Considering it's a 3 for 1, we're going to have to cut two players from our roster. Lamb & Jones are the only two players who are UFA next year (meaning we don't have to worry about paying them next year to not be on the team). Metu, Ramsey, & Woodard have a team option next year too so they might be options if we don't want to pay someone's salary next season to not be on the team. Then you have Harkless & Len who have small 2 year deals that don't fit the age timeline but we'd be on the hook to pay their salary next season. Will be interesting to see who we cut (or if we plan on making another deal here soon which opens up some roster spots).

The other thing to consider is this makes a Jerami Grant trade more difficult unless there ends up being a revision to this deal to include Grant somehow, but lets say this trade is made official and we plan on keeping Fox & Barnes this deadline, that means we can only package the following players in a trade before the deadline:

  • Holmes = $10.38 mil
  • Mitchell = $4.60 mil
  • Harkless = $4.35 mil
  • Davis = $4.00 mil
  • Len = $3.73 mil
  • Jones = $1.98 mil
  • Metu = $1.76 mil
  • Ramsey = $1.52 mil
  • Woodard = $1.52 mil
We'd have to send ~$15.9 mil out in salary to get Grant back. Holmes would have to go out, and you'd have to send out two other players from that list (at least one of Mitchell, Harkless, Davis, or Len). It can be done but it's not as clean as it was before. Hopefully we have moved on from the Grant train.

So long, Ramsey and Woodard.

The addition by subtraction with Buddy, combined with the additions, should make it fun to watch on both sides of the ball. Selfless play by role players who know their role, and long armed defenders that can rebound. I'm down with that.
Watching the ball movement, body movement and basketball IQ on both ends of the floor (we only gave up 14 points in the final 11 minutes or so) damn near brought tears to my eyes. Truly.

I could see a Len buyout too.
I would keep len over Ramsey and Woodard any day. Len has played meaningful minutes and now you have a huge glut of wings. neither of our youth are needed anymore nor have they developed into much to write home about. They should be sent packing.

I could see a Len buyout too.
Ideally you move Holmes and two guys for one guy that can actually crack an 8 man rotation and maybe even start but if you can't buying out Len isn't the worst move if you feel like keeping someone around (which means in Stockton for any of the 2nd round guys)

I'm guessing we can just move Holmes in the offseason. Im not mad we didn't pull the trigger as far as he's concerned just for the sake of doing so. I trust that Monte wasn't really blown away by any particular offer

Hopefully, Marv will get humbled now that he gets what he wants (out of Sac town) and also hopefully stop wearing that "not-Luka" badge. At the rate and the direction he's heading, I can see him being a capable Jerami Grant type of 4, slashing/inside scoring plus some better outside shooting to stretch the floor. I'll be rooting for him to succeed, just like most of the Kings that were traded these past few days.

  1. If you're rooting for him to succeed, why are you hoping that he "gets humbled"?
  2. Hopefully he stops wearing the "not-Luka" badge? I mean, he didn't put that badge on himself.

Yes and yes. Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear, but the two things you listed are from the same idea. I hope he "gets humbled" by the trade and no longer has to carry the badge since he'll be compared more than often than not for being with us who made the decision. Maybe I meant more like, "getting unshackled by pre-existing connotation".

Why on earth would the pistons give up some much for bags?
But who cares! this is a clear blow-out win for the kings in this trade.
Probably the same reason once upon a time I was excited when we acquired Derrick Williams. There is the hope a change of scenery triggers whatever they may have seen in him as a draft asset. Maybe they feel like he could be used in a different way than we did. I'm guessing Marvin becomes a journeyman, but it's not like the Pistons really gave up a TON to get him. Now they have his rights and if things start clicking for him they have another major young piece.

But, seems like these reclamation projects rarely pan out (did I mention my excitement of us nabbing Derrick Williams)

Also , the Kings got their own reclamation project in Josh Jackson (who went in the 4 slot ahead of Fox).

Marvin joining the hallowed ranks of 2nd overall picks who became journeymen like Michael Beasley, Jabari Parker, Victor Oladipo, MKG, and Evan Turner.

Yeah, lots of 2nd overall picks have not work out great lol

This is a pretty good trade for us. Hopefully DDV can come back from his injury issue to regain the type of game that he showed last season. He fits really well on this team long term.

If you look at the roster before and roster after all these trades, we are a better team now. You may not agree with the strategy or the path chosen but, for the path chosen, the trades have been pretty effective.
