Kings get DDV, Trey Lyles, Josh Jackson & trade Marvin Bagley III to Pistons in 4 team trade.

Holmes may not be enough to get Washington, if Charlotte can get Poeltl.
------------

The Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs have discussed a possible trade of PJ Washington, Kai Jones, and the inclusion of a first-round draft pick for Jakob Poeltl, league sources told HoopsHype. Currently, both sides are haggling over the potential inclusion of a first-round pick in the trade.

Charlotte has been seeking an upgrade at center and pursued Myles Turner, among other centers on the market.
Washington is owed $5.8 million next season before becoming eligible for restricted free agency in the summer of 2023. Poeltl is owed $9.4 million next season before entering unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2023.
Poeltl has also drawn interest from the Raptors, who have flirted with the idea of moving a first-round pick to acquire him, as previously reported on HoopsHype. The Mavericks also expressed interest in trading for Poeltl, league sources say. Marc Stein also mentioned the Bulls as a team that has attempted to trade for Poeltl.

Before selecting Josh Primo 12th overall in the 2021 draft, the Spurs considered Jones at that selection as well, HoopsHype has learned.

Richaun‘s better for the Hornets than Poeltl though?

Poeltl is like a slightly better Plumlee, who they already have.

DiVincenzo is an advanced impact stat darling (outside of this year). Very good buy low pickup and can be a solid fit next to either Fox or Mitchell (assuming he can bring his shooting back up to last year's % which was 38%). He has the tools to be a good shooter, good passer, good rebounder, & good defender. He's also pretty athletic as well. The only thing he's not good at is being a go-to scorer, but he has the potential to be an excellent glue guy that does all the things to help you win.

Lyles is also not a bad pickup either. Solid bench, stretch 4. And we have a team option on his $2.6 mil salary next year. Jackson likely won't see the floor much but he is an expiring.

A very good use of Bagley IMO.

Considering it's a 3 for 1, we're going to have to cut two players from our roster. Lamb & Jones are the only two players who are UFA next year (meaning we don't have to worry about paying them next year to not be on the team). Metu, Ramsey, & Woodard have a team option next year too so they might be options if we don't want to pay someone's salary next season to not be on the team. Then you have Harkless & Len who have small 2 year deals that don't fit the age timeline but we'd be on the hook to pay their salary next season. Will be interesting to see who we cut (or if we plan on making another deal here soon which opens up some roster spots).

The other thing to consider is this makes a Jerami Grant trade more difficult unless there ends up being a revision to this deal to include Grant somehow, but lets say this trade is made official and we plan on keeping Fox & Barnes this deadline, that means we can only package the following players in a trade before the deadline:

  • Holmes = $10.38 mil
  • Mitchell = $4.60 mil
  • Harkless = $4.35 mil
  • Davis = $4.00 mil
  • Len = $3.73 mil
  • Jones = $1.98 mil
  • Metu = $1.76 mil
  • Ramsey = $1.52 mil
  • Woodard = $1.52 mil
We'd have to send ~$15.9 mil out in salary to get Grant back. Holmes would have to go out, and you'd have to send out two other players from that list (at least one of Mitchell, Harkless, Davis, or Len). It can be done but it's not as clean as it was before. Hopefully we have moved on from the Grant train.

How does our current depth chart look?

Fox Mitchell
DD Lamb
Barnes Holiday
Lyles Metu Jackson
Sabonis Holmes Len

Something like this?

Not for nothing, but the trade details suggest Detroit really wanted Bagley.

I guess they did - and didn't want to compete to sign him in the open market this summer. He's a better fit with their lineup:

Joseph
Cunningham
Bey
Bagley
Stewart

and will likely get a showcase opportunity if the Pistons deal Grant. Kings fans are deservedly relieved to move on from Bagley and all the baggage of picking him before Luka, the drama with his dad etc but he'll probably put up decent numbers in Detroit and his defense (which had nowhere to go but up) has improved this year. I'm just surprised at what the Kings got back for him at the deadline when everyone knows he was almost certainly gone this summer.

Guessing we go
Fox
Holliday
Barnes
Meto
Sabonis
like we did last night until we figure out rotations and everything.
which means we get to see a Davion DDV defensive bench backcourt lol.

DDV is a stunning buy low acquisition, I'm floored. He was ridiculously good last season on both ends and has just been working his way back from injury all year. Clearly a longterm piece for us too as Monte never gave up trying to get him.

I would have been excited enough with just lyles and Jackson for Bagley. Getting DDV too is just silly

The Kings went from having to play Harrison Barnes 40 minutes a night because he was literally our only wing to now have a log jam at shooting guard and small forward.
