That whole being afreshman thing is scant excuse -- most guys who are going to be good rebounders/defenders show it early. When Shaqw was a frosh, he averaged 12rebs and 3.2blks. Ewing was at 7.5-8 and 3.5 blks. Rik Smits? 5.6rebs and 2.6blks.

I agree with the folks that say you can't judge this pick based on need. In my mind, we need everything except a SG. Because I can't see anyone but K-Mart on the roster being a starter on the squad the next time we're a contending team.
However, I dislike this pick because I think Hawes isn't going to be very good. 15 ppg and 53% shooting really isn't that great if you're 7' and offense is your sole calling card. Its pretty good normally, but not for a lotto pick with no rebounding or athletic upside.
He is very young, so there's hope for improvement. Best case scenario seems to be Brad Miller with a post game and a work ethic. That would be actually be pretty darn good....but I just can't get past those rebound numbers.

The NBA is filled with great big men? News to me. There are very few centers in this league with the offensive potential of Hawes. I doubt he's dominate but let's name all the great nba centers that are... Dwight and Oden could get there, Shaq has two years left max, and then theres Duncan. With the lack of even servicable centers in the league i would be shocked if Hawes doesnt end up in the top half of starting centers in the game.
Al Thornton and Julian Wright would have been great picks for us. Long, athletic guys who can play defense. It's like last year all over again. Better players were still available. It's hard to be a fan of a team which obviously has a different philosophy about which players to acquire than you do. If we had the same roster we had now plus Rajon Rondo instead of Douby and Al Thornton instead of Spencer Hawes, I would be thrilled. Unless I turn off my brain and commit to cheering on whoever's wearing a Kings jersey just because they're in a Kings jersey, I don't know if I can still be a fan of this team. I can think of a half dozen teams I'd rather watch right now than the Kings. Why should I care abotu Sacramento anymore? I don't even live there anymore.
This is why this draft pick really makes me mad. It's like my team has been taken away from me. Maybe you longtime fans think that's funny. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I don't know how you do it. I don't know how you can commit to a team regardless of what they do. I have to go out of my way to watch the Kings right now anyway. Why should I even bother? Who can't rebound.. Why get a center that can't rebound. How is he supposed to shoot the ball if the Kings will never have the ball to shoot because of the lack of rebounding? Seriously, I can see Garcia leading the team in Blocked Shots, and Rebounding. That's pretty sad..
Bottom line. The team needs rebounding, so we get a 7 footer who can't rebound. It's just dumb. Why is Hawes even a lottery pick?

My post was more about physical attributes. Yes, the players you mentioned performed much better as freshman and certainly I do not expect Hawes to reach their level. Particularly Shaq and Ewing who were both the #1 pick in their respective drafts. However, to make statements like Hawes isn't as strong as Vlade seems premature when you are talking about a 19 year old who has a good frame and should put weight on as long as he works hard. Also, while I never expect Hawes to develop into a great rebounder or a shotblocker, adding strenght should help him to become a more adequate rebounder. The guys you mentioned were already much more physically developed by their freshman seasons that Hawes is.
If you don't like the team, don't like the philosophy, don't like the way they play and don't live in Sacramento, maybe you're just holding on to the memories of being a Kings fan...
How do longtime fans do it? I'm not ready to condemn Hawes OR Petrie OR the Kings because I don't think this is the only acquisition we'll have and I still love going to the games.
So if you don't, then maybe it honestly is time for you to move on.

Well offense is his calling card because he has the best lowpost game of anyone in this draft along with range out to 20 feet and great passing ability. Oh ya that low 15 pgg is more then Oden, Noah, Hordford, or Wright averaged... the college game is a guards game big men don't put up huge offensive numbers.

I agree that we need athleticism, but thats hard to do with a big guy, most big guys are not that athletic, obivously they will be more than say miller but its hard to get power and speed all in one, not too many lebrons out there. i say give him a chance.

Well, He's 7 feet tall. He swift enough and very polished under the basket. He uses both hands. Jump hooks, turnaround jumper, outside shots, he got 'em all. He block shots. He can pass the ball. He can shoot outside and that opens up for Salmon/Martin/Cisco to drive to the hoop. But he's bad in rebounding and lack toughness....
But keep in mind, this is just our first move this summer.

I could see him around 20/8/4 AST, once he hits his peak. He has a bevy of post moves so he will be a scorer for a while. We need to find an athletic PF to put with him...someone who will average 8/14/3 BLK. If we can find a PF like that in next year's draft, then this team will be heading in the right direction.
And I've always been on the "Justin Williams: Diamond in the Rough" bandwagon.
Some people cry about this kid as if we are competing for the championship this year or something, and we need an impact player that fills all of our weaknesses. This is of course unrealistic. The simple fact is, we are acquiring young talent that will be the future of this franchise.
If SAR, Miller and Thomas were part of this team's future, then this would be a terrible pick. But if those three guys are the future of your franchise, then no pick other than Greg Oden is going to help.
Look 3-4 years down the line when we are back in the playoffs:

He was productive as a rebounders just not as good as a guy his size should be. This line you keep spewing about name one college big man that was a bad rebounders blah blah... there are plenty of 19 years old prospects that have gone from average rebounders, which is what he is, and developed into considerably better rebounders. He gets good position and blocks out well which with the addition of strength will allow him to be a good rebounder at the center position. Now i have a question for you, you call him a horrible rebounder but have you ever seen this kid play? Tell me what is stopping him from ever developing into a good rebounder?

And that being the issue of course: people suddenly seem to have developed insto-amnesia and become somehow convinced that our problme on the interior was that we could not score enough in there. A problme to be sure, but a very minor one. Our problem on the intereior is that we could not defende or rebound -- the two most importnat thing any group of interior defenders can provide. Of course what Hawes has not shown he can provide.
I am divided here. Well, not so much divided. There were guys I would have much MUCH rather have had, and I think we just watched a number of the few remaining franchises behind us pass us up as well. But Hawes has offensive skills. Adn the sort of offensive skills that are rare even in the NBA. But players like that, Shareefs, Bill Cartwrights, rarely win games unless they have another thing they do real well. Put them as major components, and you can continue winning 30 games a year. Their teammates have to do all the lifting.

Jason Smith.. 7'0 PF 15ppg 10rpg can block some shots, and is athletic for a big..
I would take 10 Jason Smiths before I ever drafted a Hawes.
