Kings coaching prospects (Merged)

It says the good experienced coaches are taken. If they're experienced and available there are drawbacks. If they're good but not experienced we're more hopeful...

Interesting Observation

While there are supporters and critics of every proposed replacement, I have noticed a VERY interesting trend among the posters. In general the most gushing praise an optimistic posts are in relation to either untried or EXTREEMLY new head coaches eg. Terry Porter, Avery Johnson, Cooper etc. But of the experienced coaches there tends to be more cautioned praise mixed with HEAVY criticism. Read the posts for your self and draw your own conclusions but it does say something.
I would love to have a new coach with some fire. I am not too optimistic about all of the recycled coaches. I am not too sure if the Maloofs would take a chance on someone new without much if any experience, but I would love to give a guy his first shot at the job. I love what Avery Johnson did for his team, I think Terry Porter got an extremely bad deal in Milwaukee with all the injuries he had and he did NOT get a fair chance, and I am sure there are others out there with some talent. I would love to find a new coach and see what he can do.

Coaches like Larry Brown might start to lose a lot of their fire after all these years. I am sure these older guys can still coach, but I bet there are some younger guys with much more enthusiasm. It would definitely be a gamble to hire someone younger and without much experience, but if anyone is going to gamble, why not the Maloofs? ;)

I think Larry Brown is just the sort of "name" coach the Maloofs want; it would justify letting go of Adelman and they can point to his championship ring from the Pistons. The problem is, I think Brown is vastly overrated, and a far bigger threat to team chemistry than Artest or Wells ever could be.

Yeah, we will have that 'mean look' in our team when we acquire LB. But I'm still worried about that 'water doesn't mix with oil' thing. But I'm hoping they're onto the trophy rather than their ego.

Artest is exactly the type of player Brown loves. Thinks defense first and is a smart "heady" player.

As much as I like LB I think he is going to stay in NY. Some newer reports out there indicate that. In all honesty that is one move that probably for the better. Not only for us because I think no way the Maloofs would let him go anywhere but here and I would like to see what he can do year 2. History says he can work his magic but with SBury there I doubt it.

Still leaves us at the same point. Now we are a week from the firing, no news , quiet with Petrie usually means something is in the works. I haven't listed to the radio today so not sure if anything new has happened.

Looks like LB is out of NY:

NY Times - 05/15 - 10:57 PM EST (AP Photo)
An Eastern Conference executive, who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about another team's decisions has told Howard Beck that he had spoken with Knicks officials on Monday, who said that Larry Brown's dismissal was a certainty. The executive also confirmed that Thomas, at the direction of the ownership, planned to replace Brown.

Knicks officials continued to decline to comment.

Brown's camp responded to the speculation on Monday by indicating that he intends to remain as New York head coach.

"He's recovering nicely," Glass said. "He's the coach of the Knicks, and ready and willing and able, and he intends to follow through on his commitment to coach the Knicks."

I just hope he's any good. And by good without clashing with Artest & Bonzi. Do we have any candidates besides this man? What did the Maloofs said about the Knicks buying out LB's contract?

Heh -- same ole public relations B.S. he does everytime, making it seem like he's the good guy and had NOTHING to do with anything -- these mega$$$ buyouts apparently are just mysteriously negotiated for him without his knowledge.

What a crock -- the turd should be refunding each and every Knicks season ticket holder with his $10 mil from this season, not getting some ridiculous buyout on top of it. He never showed any real intention to actualy coach this past season -- got his ring, grabbed the money, and more or less dared the Knicks to fire him and end up paying him $30, $50, $50 million for destroying their season. I should give Dolan a call tommorow and offer to represent him in a fraud suit against his former "coach".

haha.. nicely put- I also feel bad for every knicks fan out there. But who's the sucker paying to buy this guy out? Honestly- i feel that Dolan's more of the idiot in this outfit..

I mean look- the Knicks have one, if not the, highest payroll in the NBA and have one of the WORST records- something's definitely OFF there... lol.. maybe thats why so many New Yorkers are in a bad mood..

LB to Sac. Interesting scenario. I wouldn't be against it, but I think I would rather have Mario Elie, a younger, more energetic coach with something to prove.

LB is a big name because of a championship ring, but much of the work from that championship ring must be attributed to the terrific Rick Carlisle. LB piggybacked off of Carlisle's work to take the team to the top.

Just remember what Iverson said about him being the 'best coach he's ever played for', and coming from him, that says alot, after some fo the dramas they had together. Respect.

Looking at Avery's success in Dallas, I think we should follow their protocol and go with a younger coach with a supremely positive mindset that will negate any issues of 'confidence' in pressure situations that the Kings have had in recent years. Elie is that man. I just hope the Kings see it that way too.

i still say bring on Dennis Rodman
As what, a cross dressing security guard?? Rodman is still seems to be searching for himself, and still wants alot of attention. Do you really want RuPaul to be our coach??

I agree and like I said way before. I can name more players that played better for LB then LB had problems with.

NY is a complete mess with or without LB,

LB gives strong reaction fo and against. Just like Artest did. I was actually in the middle/against artest so I do understand. I was saying the same thing for the ney side to artest.

Time will only tell on this one. I am going to bow out of the LB talk, for 1 I don't know if I can be fair because I like him a lot as a coach and 2 its all speculation right now. I have always tried to keep my emotions out of posting. I like LB a lot and dont want to turn into one of those Reef lovers that keep posting over and over the same points.

:)

Rodman would obviously be the worst coach ever, no debate necessary, but... don't we need a rebounding, shot-blocking interior presence at power forward? Especially a 44-year-old one who cross-dresses and marries wild, attention-hungry supermodels/actresses/singers?

A little off topic, but check out the lineup we COULD have (all Kings players or free agents):

PG - Sprewell
SG - Bonzi
SF - Artest
PF - Rodman
C - Laimbeer

Bench - Isaiah Rider

SWEET!!!

Agent: Brown won't leave Knicks unless fired

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/basketball/nba/05/17/brown.ap/index.html

Larry Brown will not accept a buyout to step down as coach of the New York Knicks, and the team will have to fire him to end his run, his agent said.

Joe Glass, Brown's longtime representative, responded again Tuesday to recent reports claiming the Knicks were looking to part ways with their coach after one dismal season. The New York Post and Daily News reported Sunday that owner James Dolan is considering buying out Brown's contract.

"There's been no discussion of a buyout and there won't be a discussion of a buyout," Glass told the New York Post for Wednesday's editions. "We're not going to accept a settlement. He's coaching the Knicks or they're firing him -- one way or another. There's not going to be a $25 million buyout."

Brown -- who signed a five-year deal with the Knicks worth a reported $50 million -- has said all along he believes he will return. ESPN reported Tuesday that Brown has told a friend he believes he'll be fired.

"Doesn't sound like a very good friend to me. No comment," Glass told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Brown, a Brooklyn native, described his hiring last year as a "dream job," and the Knicks hoped his happy homecoming signaled a return to the playoffs. But despite a league-high payroll of more than $120 million, New York finished with the league's second-worst record, going 23-59 and matching the most losses in franchise history.

Another candidate? Whisenant. The article suggests the Maloofs would be happy with him.

How do you think of him? According to the article, IMHO, he has a lot of merits, defense, winning record, experience, and championship. I know that he is somewhat old, and that NBA would be completely different from WNBA. But I think sometimes the tactics of women's basketball are more various than that of men's. So, maybe he can be an answer?

However, I had not seen one single game of Monarchs. So please, anybody, let me know.

Koz has Whis on his show right now. From the sounds of it he's being seriously considered for the job, but in no way are any decisions near.

I'm thinking if he really wants it, he should be making "no comments" all over the place. I don't see the Maloofs OR Petrie being very happy about good ol' Coach Whis going on KHTK and touting his own possible future.

He wasn't really touting, he was just being honest. Honestly I zoned out for a sec lol, but I caught that it's been talked about with Petrie and the Maloofs, but in no way are they just making him the coach. He is a consideration.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I zoned for a sec, maybe I missed a really important couple words before that lol.

Maybe Whis becomes the Kings coach and the Maloofs go and get Michael Cooper for the Monarchs?? I think that would be really tough with the season about to start, that's why I've been figuring that it wouldn't be coach Whis.

I think it's clear that Coach Whis would LOVE the job. I think, though, if the Maloofs thought he was the answer, they would have already grabbed him. My guess is they're gonna stick with the winner with the Monarchs and look elsewhere for the Kings.

I think that to. On the other hand they may be favoring him, but they still want to explore all options and do their due dilligence. That way they make sure they aren't just going with what they are leaning towards without other info first. It would be a real tough deal to do that though.

It's probably best if they leave Coach Whis where he is. I mean you REALLY disrupt the Monarchs season if you take coach Whis away as it's starting.

I don't think the Monarchs season would be disrupted if it happened, it's only like 12 weeks long.

He's given hints he would just be their GM next year anyway.
