Hi Ray -
I'm new to these pages, but I think they're great. Lots of knowledge out there, to say the least. I don't cook professionally or enter in competitions (job won't allow it - too much time required for work- I'm employed by an agency of the state). I do enjoy it as a hobby and have cooked for groups as large as 500. Maybe someday.
To get to your request for the BBQ Search page, there was no listing for Sacramento, California, but there is a place here that is definitely worth mentioning. Name/Address is:
J.R.'s "The Texas Bar-B-Que"
180 Otto Circle
Sacramento, California
(916) 424-3520
He's got quite a large pit on site, and it never shuts down! They are open 7 days, and J.R. has numerous trailered "pits" for catering jobs. He uses mesquite wood for cooking, and his brisket is outstanding! He also serves pork shoulder, ribs, turkey. First timers to the restaurant get a free sample to decide what they want to eat. Portions are generous, with sandwiches around $5 and plates for about $9. I can't finish the plate without being a little too full. (2 people can eat off of the plate if they are light-normal eaters) Both come with extras - you can't go wrong with either. Not a fancy place, by any means, but large enough to accomodate the multitudes of people that frequent J.R.'s BBQ and have discovered this secret!!!
I love a good que, and being originally from Los Angeles where there are hundreds of BBQ places (Dr. Hogly Woggly's Tyler Texas BBQ in the San Fernando Valley is one of the best in LA), none hold a candle to this.
On a side note - he is pretty active in the community and cooks for many events, which I am sure add to the success of the event. (How can you make money serving a sandwich, beans/slaw for $1.50??) Does get people to show up though!
Hope this helps, enjoying the BBQ pages. I'm sure I will pick up alot of knowledge from you experts out there - THANKS!
