Kings aren't Winners OR Losers

An ESPN article today by Chad Ford "Winners and Loser of the NBA's offseason (so far), he listed his views of the winners and losers from the major trades/signings involving Elton Brand, Baron Davis, Richard Jefferson and Ron Artest among others.

Everyone involved in the major trades and signings was listed EXCEPT for the Kings. The losers was the list of usual suspects PLUS the Mavs. The winners were, in no particular order, the 76ers, Rockets, Pacers and Raptors. Even the Blazers were listed as winners and they didn't even make any big deals.

Maybe the Kings-Rockets deal was a neutral for the Kings but he said, if it works (if RonRon minds his P's and Q's) for the Rockets, they will contend in the west. The Kings got rid of a team play problem and got two first round draft picks, BJax and a wad of cash. Thinking about is a bit more, I go along with it being a "ne carne ne pische", not good or bad (not meat not fish). In the long run a definite plus and good but for this year, no playoff hopes but big basis for the future.

I read it a bit earlier and interesting how many WC teams are "losers" according to Ford (but at least Kings not on the list). Also, he rates a "winner" in Houston saying they could become a big loser if Artest blows up - not likely Ford says since playing this season for a new contract.

kings are winners imo. who cares what these so called experts say. kings got younger, a player with size and skill in the draft while shedding a headcase..

The cynical take

My personal experience is that basing anything on what sports columnists say is asking for frustration. Especially national sports columnists, who tend to want to dismiss the Kings because they are a "small market" team.

If you find their writing entertaining, that's one thing. (Bill Simmons, for example, could write about almost anything and I'd read it.)

But if you are trying to use someone like Chad Ford, Marc Stein or Sean Deveney to decide whether a team (or a trade) is good or bad, you might end up unhappy, because they get more kudos if they write about Boston, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. More people live in those cities, obviously, which means more people will read that column if it's about their team, which means more advertising numbers, which means more money for the newspaper, magazine, sports highlight show, or Web site.

Having said that, Sean Deveny and Marc Stein are usually pretty good when they are guests on KHTK. I don't think I've heard Chad Ford come on.

This is largely why I like a lot of the statistics-based writers, because they can add something unbiased and objective to the conversation, even if you have to take it with a grain of salt. Too many national writers are just working off of their "gut feeling." And while some of them are pretty insightful, I don't find most of the professional writers provide me with much more insight than the more thoughtful and knowledgable writers on these message boards. Other than some good behind the scenes quotes or rumors, in the days of League Pass and 24 hour access to information and statistics, the gap between professional writer and superfan has been narrowed significantly.

we got rid of ron for acceptable pieces. when you think about it that was the only plus for us this offseason. no one is impressed with thompson or any other of our draft picks at this point. i would say its pretty neutral right now.

You may not be impressed with Thompson or Singletary, but others have been. It would be a good idea to not speak for all Kings fans. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure why... I get the same feeling

Yep - me, too. And I don't care if it's meaningless or not.

I think this is the only part that affects how we received a neutral rating, as we don't know what will become of Donte Greene and that 1st round draft pick.
The rest of your post doesn't fit with the article.

I think the feeling some of us have for Dallas started when C-Webb was injured in the playoffs and the Mavs beat the Webberless Kings. They should have sat Dirk to make it fair LOL. Just a thought

While that might be true for some, my dislike of Dallas goes much deeper. In fact, it goes back to the days of the Roger Staubach-era with the Dallas Cowboys. "America's team" wasn't my team.

:p

David Thorpe at espn.com was impressed :
.....Jason Thompson, Kings
Scouts rave about his speed. I love his hands. He mixes it up well around the rim and looks like he'll be an effective player out on the floor. The best rookie power forward of the summer......

Or what about hoopsworld? I think they might have been impressed also, based on this quote right here.....
12. Jason Thompson - Sacramento Kings
Noteworthy Performance:
20 points, 10 rebounds against the Golden State Warriors
Grade: A-

Review: Thompson entered summer league as a relative unknown and headed back to Sacramento as one of the most talked about big men of the rookie class. At 6-11 he possessed one of the more intriguing games, exhibiting skills common for a big man like rebounding while also showcasing the ability to run the fast break. Like Bayless, Thompson also hit two-game winning shots. The Kings need all the front court help they can get with Brad Miller suspended for the first five games of the regular season, and Thompson could fill in nicely.

But nobody is impressed with Thompson. Whats wrong with you, do you just say things that aren't true or go against conventional wisdom to spark up trouble?

For any city to call they're team, "America's Team", is the height of arrogance. I wanted to throw up the first time I heard it, and I still do. I think the movie "Dallas does Debbie" is more the image I have of that town.:(

Didn't Debbie do Dallas?

I want to throw up when I hear Budweiser call itself "The King of Beers" and "The Great American Lager". When I hear Dallas being called "America's team", I think of Budweiser and usually do url in my mouth a little bit.

What are the chances of the bobcats making the playoffs? they started well last season, and i have 20 bucks on it that they do.

cavs pistons celtics magic raptors sixers wizards I think are locks for the playoffs. Teams on the outside looking in are bucks bulls bobcats heat

I think I'm missing another "lock" team to make it but either way I don't see the bobcats getting in

Looks like you just lost 20 bucks haha just playing

Hawks.

I think i lost 20 bucks. I also bet 10 bucks jamal crawford would make the allstar team...I hope dwayne wade doesn't come back to true form, because michael redd looks like a lock, and VC is still VC, and Jason Richardson is JRich...and Lebron is a lock and iguodala is on the up and up. I think Jamal has a shot....i also bet a sushi cafe roll that the Knicks make the playoffs...i am addicted to gambling....from now on, call me donoughy

Bottom line on this thread, the Kings probably are a "neutral" rating for player movement this summer. An unknown first round pick in Greene, a first rounder next year, BJax, who we older timers know is a plus on the Kings whether he's lost a step or not, and a bunch of cash in the $1M to $2M range. No negative there for sure but how much a positive we won't know until probably the holidays at year end.

But seeing the Mavs on the loser side makes me happy (and Mrs. CruzDude too as she has less than no love at all for Cuban). I'm wondering if the Mavs, Suns and Spurs will make the playoffs. Spurs are a late season team but they are old too. Suns and Mavs don't surprise me at all if both don't make playoffs this year.

I really feel like we were winners this off-season so far. We drafted JT who looks really good, we traded Ron Artest for a good rebuilding package including another young player that looked really good, Donte Greene. We also signed Bobby Brown who once again looked pretty good. Notice a trend? We actually got good young players this off season instead of aging medicore vets. I'm not a huge fan of the Beno signing but at least he has a shot at getting better. Compared to the last couple of off seasons this one has been great.

thompson lovers.....not everyone is impressed with him. how can you call that a successful move when he's shown nothing? its neutral at best. he's another big, plus, he can dunk  another plus. so lets just tone it down about the thompson situation. the more intelligent posters here would agree that we shouldnt jump the gun on this one. you know who they are. they've already made it clear. give thompson a shot to prove himself before we get overly excited about his "hands"

and i must say that im more anxious to see donte than thompson

how can you call it an unsuccessful move when he's done nothing? He's shown good flashes in the summer league, and most of us liked what we saw. And then there were those that weren't impressed. My point is, you're arguing against yourself because it's way too early to say if it's a good move or a bad move. It might be a few years until we know for sure
