Kings 2009-2010 NBA Draft:

I really tend to agree with Bajaden and Hammystyle in that we need big, long BIGS. hopefully Cousins or Favors at the 5th spot, and Varnado, Parakhouski, Jordon, or Pittman at the 33rd spot. If Petrie would buy another 2nd round spot to pick up Jones or Randle, then we would be well on our way, only lacking another top player through a trade. I hope Petrie becomes very aggressive this draft to get us the second "star" for our team through the draft. Top 5 is good, but we won't get a "star" if we trade down.

NY has openly declared a desire to purchase second rnd picks too. The Jazz might sell theirs after what they did with Maynor and the rest of their cost cutting measures.

One more interesting big body

Paulao Prestes - 22 year old 6'10 265 lb Brazilian center playing in the ACB league in Spain. Considered the best league in the world other than the NBA. Led the league in rebounds per minute. The scouting report on DX made me think of a big bodied low post bruiser in the Kendrick Perkins mode. Then nbadraft.net, made that exact comparison.

Positives - Already producing and playing solid basketball at a very high level. Brazilian big men (Nene, Varejao, Tiago Splitter) have seemed to fair pretty well.

He reminds me a little of Anderson Varejao when he came out in the draft in that he seems to be overshadowed by his countrymen who play the same position. Never got national team exposure and then never got big time Euroleague exposure.

Another Big Euro

Tibor Pleiss - 20 year old German 7'0 220 lb center. Reportedly a decent athlete with a nice big frame and wingspan. He was very productive at the Eurocup level avering about 17 points 12 rebounds and 2 blocks per 36 minutes. Very skinny obviously, and doesn't sound like he's picked up a weight in his life. Reportedly he's staying in Europe for the time being but could be a 2nd round pick turned gold in a couple years. Maybe a rich man's Rasho Nesterovic?

Pleiß (or Pleiss, spellings vary) is solid, but I'm not quite convinced he's NBA material. He is extremely long, massive wingspan and so on, but saying he's a decent athlete is overstating it. He can run the floor a bit and finish on alley-oops, but one is because he has freakishly long legs (seriously, the guy basically has no torso, he's just arms and legs) and the other is because of his standing reach, which is unique for the BBL. He has a good basketball IQ, can pass very well, knows how to block/change lots of shots without getting in foultrouble -you rarely see him out of position and he never bites on fakes- and he has pretty good touch both from the perimeter and as a finisher. What he doesn't have, though, is a low post/bavk to the basket game. No moves, no hooks, nothing.
Moreover, I'm not convinced he is assertive enough to be a good player. He tends to disappear in games and let other people do the heavy lifting. Of course, this is also due to the fact that he's playing in a, for German standards, elite team and is surrounded by players who can take games over. But I always think that, especially when those other players themselves fail, as was the case today in the potentially last match of the championship series, he should demand the ball more. You can see this mentality problem even in little things, such as his tendency to pass offensive rebounds out to the perimeter and not go up for the score himself. It kind of drives me crazy at times.
Anyway, short answer: Your comparison to Rasho seems spot on, the more I think about it, I'm just not sure about the rich man's part, as I think that his lack of athleticism, his passivity and his lack of a lowpost game will hold him back.

Nbadraft.net has cousins slipping to Detroit. That is ridiculous IMO.

Meh, it's all rumor right now. We'll see what happens after the New Jersey and Philly workouts between Cousins and Favors. Then there'll actually be something tangible to go off of.

Here's my problem with Ebanks. He has the look of a perimiter player. He certainly can't play PF. So he's a SF. He's a SF with no outside shot at all. His 3pt shot actually was worse this season dropping from 12.5% to 10%. Are you kidding me? He's not a bad defender, but I just don't see him bring enough to the table. I'm sure someone will take a flyer on him at some point. He's not a bad athlete. But I wouldn't take him before Varnado, Jordan, Vasquez, Jones, White, etc.

The latest Yahoo sports mock draft also has Cousins slipping to #7. hmmm, we'll see next week

Actually, the ß character is the German "ss" so they are exactly the same. Just an FYI. :)

Nope, the ss is used after short vowels, the ß is used after long vowels. It was even more complicated than this, but we had a Rechtschreibreform ten years ago, which simplified the rule. Ordinarily, because ei is a long vowel, a ß should be used and Bamberg does so on their scoreboard, but on the jerseys it's usually Pleiss.

Huh, didn't know that. Thanks for the info! Will need to track down my high school and college German teachers and tell them that A) they forgot to tell us that, or B) I have forgotten much of what I learned through non-use (MUCH more likely). ;)

Don't be hard on yourself. I lived a year in Germany and don't know about this thing :)

Well, depending on when you learned German, your information might be correct. I can really only speak for the things that have happened from '97 onwards and even most Germans don't really understand the new rules (after looking over some sites about the rules, apparently i don't either). Even my parents still have a kind of faq hanging over their desk. If you want to know the new rules and simultaneously brush up on your German, read either this or this.
