Joerger and his culture

I got serious about basketball at age 10 playing against black kids for money. I was never in the Armed Forces, but basketball has taught me more about "toughness" than anything else. It was the emotional outlet growing up and it kept me out of trouble. My life might have different without it. Many professional players would tell the same but more interesting story.

Jimmy Butler/Beverly/Carroll/Tucker/Tyson Chandler/Marcus Smart/Avery Bradley/Draymond/Adams/Birdman/Alan Anderson/Bismack/James Johnson/Acy/Crowder/Ed Davis/Tony Douglas/Taj Gibson/Tony Allen/Amir Johnson/MKG/Wes/Marcus Morris/Zaza/David West/Ronnie Price are all tough as nails pitbull types and there's countless others I have missed.

Cmon now bro. Tony Allen and David West is where that list begins and ends. The rest are merely stout defenders or rim protectors at best. But who knows maybe you have some very friendly pits at home.

Beverley, Smart, Adams, Johnson, Douglas and Gibson also all have some legit nasty in them.

Toughness - the mental and emotional ability to withstand adversity over time. Adversity - bad calls, bad play, bad press, losing, injuries. Toughness is less the ability to make the hard foul than it is the ability to sustain good play after getting fouled hard. Toughness isn't blaming others. Toughness is focusing on what needs to be done when everyone else has lost focus.

It remains to be seen whether this team will be tough. Words are one thing. Action is another. One game isn't going to be the proof, nor is ten games. You've to prove it over the course of a season.

Four, maybe five of the guys you named are actually tough... The rest of them merely seem tough, by comparison to their peers.
You have an incredibly broad definition of "tough as nails".

I was thinking the same thing.

Honestly, the first name that came to mind was Ron Artest -- or whatever he calls himself now. But he can't play anymore.

There just aren't many of those types of guys left in the league anymore. Barnes is a rare breed.

Speaking of which he was waived by Cleveland to make room for jr smith. With the latest Ty Lawson news he would fit in really well.

Yes, but pre-Lawson news (if indeed it does go down) we were already going to have to cut Farmar if we were keeping all the kids. So Farmar steps in for Lawson, and we sign Douglas, then he'd be in the same position Farmar was -- no place for him sans a trade or surprise waiver.

I personally don't lose any sleep with cutting farmar.

Well if the Lawson news is serious and he gets cut, Farmar is either the starting or backup PG for the first eight games with he and Temple handling PG duties.

Cutting Farmar to sign Douglas doesn't fix anything. In fact, given how Farmar has played so far this preseason I'd say it would be a step backwards.

The issue is that the Kings finished the summer with only Darren Collison at PG. It was a real position of weakness. Lawson signing on the cheap and then looking like the Lawson of a couple years ago made it start looking like the position was shored up.

Any way you slice it - if Lawson ends up getting cut the Kings are back to having an average starter/good backup PG in DC (who starts the year suspended) and no quality depth behind him.

And add Jimmer Fredette!

Thanks dude, I needed a good laugh... You know, Jimmer may well be a tough hombre in real life. By that I mean, if someone attacked his wife, he might be the guy that responds in a big way. You never know. Some of the toughest guys I know, are also some of the nicest guys I know. But you don't want to be on the wrong side of the table from them.

If the Lawson thing is true, you should.

Farmar is a solid backup for a system like this one, a prolific 3pt shooter, which fits, and he already played for Joerger last year. You likely set that aside for Lawson's talent if he has his head screwed on straight, but if not, you're pretty lucky to have a Farmar if you're running a system like ours where the PG doesn't need to create at a high level. Especially for these first 8 games.

I've always liked Toney Douglas for what he is, but the huge wart that finds him annually bouncing from team to team is that he really can't run a team. He's really a lot like Temple, as a combo guard more than anything else. If we moved Ben for a pick or some such, hey welcome on board . Always liked the defense and toughness, bombs threes. I just don't think a good team can rely on him to run the team for extended periods.

I've always wondered about Douglas. He's obviously talented enough to play in the NBA, but for some reason, he can't stick with any team more than a year. I love his defense, and on a team with the kind of system were running, you'd think he'd be a decent fit. There has to be more to the picture than were seeing. Hey, if all you want is a player that can defend the PG position, then go after Aaron Craft. Decent 3 pt shooter and ballhandler, and one of the best PG defenders that I've ever seen. He's a perfect example of how an average athlete can be an elite defender.
