Joe Johnson wants out: Your thoughts?

Suns dominance in the Pacific is less apparent now. Although Nash/Marion/Amare is still better than Bibby/Peja/Miller. I guess the Hawks figure JJ is their answer at PG. They still are overloaded at the wings and lack size.

And so it turns out to be a one year blip for the Suns. They really should get more back for Johnson than just Boris Diaw and a couple of maybe picks. They hold the hammer in those negotiations.

I don't know, this may turn out to be big for the Suns. They absolutely had no chance of winning it all as their team stood, IMO. The Spurs, Pistons and others are just too good for them to beat. Maybe if they held on for a few years and tried to add the right pieces, actually had a bench to speak of, they could be great. Add some defensive toughness, more options off the bench like the 02-03 Kings, maybe be a really good team. They probably thought they couldn't pull it off and are moving in a different direction to stay a winning team. Those picks could be huge. Then again, they won't win in the next few years, and will have to scramble to put a good team around Amare. Could end in disaster and could be a great move. I won't sweat it and hope the Kings become so good that it doesn't even matter what they do and we just beat them into submission regardless.

JJ has cash in his eyes..... he knows hes not worth half as much as Atlanta is gonna give him and hes gonna jump all over it!

edit: sorry didnt read article before posting..... LOL!

Update on the ESPN Article http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/stor...d=2120960&num=1

The proposed deal, according to sources, would bring guard Boris Diaw and two lottery-protected future first-round picks to Phoenix -- along with a trade exception in the $5 million range -- after Johnson signs a contract under terms established by Atlanta: $70 million over five years with an estimated balloon payment of $20 million up front

Ok maybe not such a good deal for the Suns.

So...Joe Johnson for Boris Diaw, straight up then. I guess it works if Pheonix is assuming that Johnson won't even show up to play in any significant way if they decide to retain him. Diaw is basically a defensive roleplayer, something that Johnson could already do for the Suns, and they lose all the scoring threat in this trade. And that cap space will just be spent on max contracts coming down the pipe, so with Bird rights they don't need that cap room anyway.

the soap opera continues...

Radio spot suggests JJ would like Suns return

Joe Johnson asked the Suns last week not to match the offer sheet he can sign with Atlanta on Tuesday.

Johnson wants to play in Phoenix.

Can both be true? In free agency, where teams' wallets and players' skin need to be thick, Johnson may be proving to be a quality player again.

It seemed inflammatory Friday when Johnson revealed to ESPN.com that he asked Managing Partner Robert Sarver not to re-sign him, particularly with Johnson saying it while in Toronto with Shawn Marion for Steve Nash's charity game.

But consider what Johnson also said Friday to Toronto's "The Fan" radio station when asked whether Phoenix was the best scenario for him.

"Probably so, more than likely so," Johnson said before a long, deep breath. "It's going to be tough. It's going to be real tough. Hopefully, everything will work out like we want it."

His posturing may have more to do with ensuring that a five-year offer that may be worth almost $72 million (with $18 million up front) is still on the table Tuesday.

There is no doubt that Johnson has been peeved. Those close to him said he was upset when Phoenix would not go up $5 million to meet his request for $50 million for six years last summer, when the Suns gave Quentin Richardson a six-year, $43.5 million deal.

He was further unsettled this month when Phoenix offered $60 million for six years and asked him to choose between it and the Atlanta offer at one point. That prompted his request to Sarver, who intends to match the Hawks' offer. He has a week to do so once Johnson signs Atlanta's offer.

"It's a lot of things," Johnson told ESPN.com when asked why he would want to leave Phoenix. "It's the way things were handled last summer, how things have been handled this summer. There's been some things going on that aren't great."

Johnson told a Little Rock television station recently that Phoenix was not doing anything extra to retain him, but it now appears he is taking some of the Suns' messages.

Phoenix prepared a full recruiting blitz for Johnson that would have been similar to the one that wooed Nash last summer. However, Johnson canceled a meeting in the first week of free-agency contact in order to seek his market value.

He found it with Atlanta, which sold Johnson on being in the South, playing point guard and being the star. But it would not be the first time Atlanta has been a pawn in free agency.

"They've been telling me how great of a city Phoenix is, and this and that," Johnson told The Fan. "There are a lot of things I already know. Of course, they don't want me to leave. They've just been showing me a lot of love right now.

"I'm just looking for the best situation for myself. I don't think it has more to do with one or the other. I would love to try to get a championship. But like I say, it's a business. You've got to go where you're comfortable. . . . Any decision I make, it doesn't really matter. It's a tough decision, but I think it's going to work out for the best."

i wouldn't go to the hawks if they payed me in trillions. with all honesty, there is nothing i can do with 10 million that i can't do with 5, and id rather take the 5 and play for a winning franchise.

If they paid me trillions I'd play out the contract and just buy my own team and play there. I don't even think that's legal, but I'd just by the league and make it legal anyway.

Personally I'm glad. This should be MUSIC TO OUR EARS. As Mavs fans (and I'm sure you Kings fans) this has gotta be the best news we can receive: one of our chief rivals is going to be in some serious trouble. Either they lose JJ, or they re-sign him and live in Salary Cap Hell due to other huge contracts to Nash and you know Amare is going to get his...

And you know the Suns aren't getting anything near equal value for him if it is a sign and trade.

i REALLY like this. obviously, its a risky situation when yer trying to build a championship contender on the fly, but i like it anyways. joe johnson was so important a piece when it came to phoenix's success last season. he wasnt the most important, but its very clear how much he meant to a team with serious depth issues. still, i like phoenix's ballsiness in this situation. its ludicrous to pay johnson more than 60 million over 6 years. 60 million's too high as it is, but i like that they recognize the dangers of putting too much stock into johnson when they're only built for the present, and grossly overestimating johnson's value could damage them in the future. of course, the fact that they're built for the present indicates that its worth the money, cuz the time is now for a championship run. double edged sword. if they actually told johnson 60 million over 6 years or atlanta, then i say two thumbs up and a pat on the back to phoenix's front office for showing some balls. in these ridiculous market conditions, it cant be easy to say that to a player you [desperately] want [and need] to keep.

Why is atlanta obsessed with "4th Wheels"? First Al Harington, next JJ, before that, the third rate Antone Walker.

What are your thoughts on this situation with Joe Johnson and the Suns.

Personally, I don't know what his problem is. Phx would be a dream city for me to get paid to work in, and he is going to be offered a lucrative contract either way.

But that's just me.

He doesn't want to be a 4th wheel in Phoenix. Cant blame him, but to go play for the Hawks? That leaves me scratching my head.

Atlanta has sucked for a very long ime. There are reasons for that.
