I think i remember that game where Donte played crazy, 40 points plus i think. But he needed the ball to do that. Honneycut didn't dominate the ball, he was passing, creating plays, blocking/altering shots and finishing well. the Tyshaun Prince reference was his built.
I think both Malcom Lee and Honeycutt are examples of players that flew under the radar because of Howlands system. Honeycutt is a very good passer, but you had to watch a lot of UCLA basketball games to know just how good he is in that capacity. Both Lee and Honeycutt are very good defensive players, and both have excellent knowledge of how to play the game. Something Greene didn't have coming into the league. To compare Greene to Kevin Durant, almost makes me want to throw up. Anyone that watched Greene play at Syracuse would never make that comparison.
The players that impressed me last night were Harris and Smith. Although I knew that Smith had those skills, one always wonders just how well they'll translate. But I thought he played within himself and did a nice job of distributing the ball. Harris just quietly went about his business and put up very good numbers while doing it. Nothing splashy, just effecient. I felt I didn't see the real Jimmer until the 4th quarter when he became more aggresive. He had some moments eariler, but it just felt like he spent the first 3 quarters trying to defer to his teammates. Which is understandable. I thought Kemba sort of floated a little as well, but when he decided to turn it up a notch, you had to take notice.
It was fun to see Jackson Emery and Jimmer together again one last time. Emery was the yang to Jimmers ying for the last few years. I do think that Emery can play in the NBA. It may take him a few years in europe, but he's a good defensive player that can hit the spot up shot, and there's always a place for a player like that. I wish him well.
I wish Jenkins could have gotten more time on the floor. Faried showed off his rebounding ability, and as long as you keep him near the basket, he's a very effective player. Seeing him out on the perimiter shooting three's almost gave me a nervous breakdown. As I've said before, I see Faried as a Ben Wallace type of player. Good defender and rebounder, and someone that will get almost all his points off garbage and alleyopps. Please! Please don't allow him to shoot any shot beyond 6 feet from the basket.
The biggest difference between Thomas and Jetter, aside from talent, is that Thomas has that "IT" factor, that seperates average players from good players. Too bad you can't bottle it. Wright is another example of a terrific athlete that hasn't developed beyond being a terrific athlete. Learn how to shoot the ball for gods sake. For a guy that currently makes his living attacking the basket, I think improving your ballhandling would help a little.
I think Singleton showed he can play defense with the best of them, and also showed that he continues to be a streaky outside shooter. I still love his overall potential. When he just catches and shoots, he's fine. But when you see the gears turning in his head before he shoots, not so good!
I thought the red team won because they defended the pick and roll and most of the ball screens much better than the blue team. I lost count of how many times someone got picked off by a screen on the blue team and no one rotated to pick up his man. They were a little better in the second half for a quarter, but then it seemed as if everyone on both teams ran out of gas in the 4th quarter, and there was nothing resembling defense.
All in all, its was fun to watch. For a bunch of guys that had never played together, it was about what I expected. Unfortunately it primed the pump for more...
