Jimmer Fredette Highlights from 9/23/11

He's not someone who will blow you away with his speed, though he is pretty quick, but what impresses me the most is his tremendous body control. He's never flailing or losing his balance. This allows him to always charge forward and not get knocked side to side.

Beno Udrih with better range. It looks like an upgrade, so I'll take it as much as I liked what Beno did in his solid role.

I would say Beno Udrih with a higher 3pt%, a worse midrange shot, much worse finishing ability at the rim and worse defense for the moment.

Oh no! Beno's defense was terrible and his finishing ability around the rim wasn't good either. His stop 'n pop in the lane on the other hand was as good as I've ever seen, at least from a King.

But Beno was 13th in the NBA in FG% at the rim for players who played 40+ games and had 2+ attempts per game. Less than 42% of those shots were assisted (%As).

Check these stats http://www.hoopdata.com/shotstats.aspx?team=%&type=pg&posi=%&yr=2011&gp=40&mins=0.

No one in the NBA shot better at the rim than Beno with less %As, 1+ attempts per game and 40+ games. Players he compares to are Monta Ellis and Dwyane Wade, although each of them had 5+ attempts per game to Beno's 2.3. Carl Landry is another good comparison stat wise.

That and watching him play was enough for me to say that Beno was an above average finisher for the past two years.

I think Beno's defense is better because he did simple things like icing the sideline pick and roll more often than the other guards did, which was never. And I thought that Beno tried to communicate on defense more than the other guards. Not that he wasn't terrible.

Agreed. I think Beno was a pretty good finisher at the rim, without any stats or anything to back me up but just from watching him play.

Beno's average at the rim was good. However, he seldom went to the rim. He only took 17% of his shots close to the basket. He had zero dunks, and zero tips for the entire season according to 82 games. Of the 17% he took, at least half were on break a ways. The fact is, Beno didn't scare anyone with his ability to drive to the basket. I will predict right now that Fredette willl be far superior at taking the ball to the basket than Beno ever dreamed of being. Driving the lane is a part of Fredette's game that goes unnoticed at times because of his being such a great shooter.

This isn't a knock on Beno. A player should play to his strengths, and thats what Beno did. When teams allowed him to get into the lane, he took advantage of it with his mid range jumper. But when they shut the key down, Beno had a tendecy to disappear at times. My biggest complaint with Beno is that he was one of the better 3 pt shooters on the team, and yet he continued to pass up the shot when he had it. As a true point guard, he was average at best. Setting aside the occasional game where Beno would have double digit assists, Beno played more like a SG than a PG. I honestly believe that Fredette can bring some PG skills to the team. It may not happen overnight, but I believe it'll happen.

But then again, that's kind of what you get when you play him with Tyreke and give Tyreke the ball to create right? As in, you'd be playing Tyreke at PG and Beno at SG. From what I've seen I do think that Jimmer can and will try to get to the rim way more than Beno. What I don't think is that Beno wasn't good at finishing around the rim when he did get there, be it off the dribble or off the ball cuts.

There's no doubt that Beno deferred to Tyreke. Beno was a smart player who knew what his strengths were and he tried to play to those strengths. He didn't try to do things he wasn't good at. Something Tyreke is still learning.. Every player goes thru growing pains. Unfortunately we have to go through them as well. Vicariously of course, but still, almost as painful at times.

I might be biased, but I think a large portion of the King's fanbase is horribly underestimating what they've gotten with the addition of Jimmer to the team. He is not just a shooter. And the "slow and nonathletic" argument just doesn't work for me after watching him completely blow by and decimate "athletic" defenders for the past 36 months. We're talking about a kid who got doubled and tripled - FULL COURT - literally every second that he was in the game.... and still single handedly beat teams and broke scoring records.

Calling him a pure shooter, or acting like he doesn't have the ability to take it to the hoop and finish - means that you either don't know much about basketball, or are speaking on a subject that you know little about.
