Beno's average at the rim was good. However, he seldom went to the rim. He only took 17% of his shots close to the basket. He had zero dunks, and zero tips for the entire season according to 82 games. Of the 17% he took, at least half were on break a ways. The fact is, Beno didn't scare anyone with his ability to drive to the basket. I will predict right now that Fredette willl be far superior at taking the ball to the basket than Beno ever dreamed of being. Driving the lane is a part of Fredette's game that goes unnoticed at times because of his being such a great shooter.
This isn't a knock on Beno. A player should play to his strengths, and thats what Beno did. When teams allowed him to get into the lane, he took advantage of it with his mid range jumper. But when they shut the key down, Beno had a tendecy to disappear at times. My biggest complaint with Beno is that he was one of the better 3 pt shooters on the team, and yet he continued to pass up the shot when he had it. As a true point guard, he was average at best. Setting aside the occasional game where Beno would have double digit assists, Beno played more like a SG than a PG. I honestly believe that Fredette can bring some PG skills to the team. It may not happen overnight, but I believe it'll happen.
