Jerry DID fall off the turnip truck but he's slightly more sophisticated than Larry the Cable Guy. I'd kind of miss his corny saying but I can see why people in other NBA markets might think he's a major goober. He's not exactly the glitz the Maloofs seem to like, but then all those butt-ugly, Southern genetic experiments who sit on Kings Row don't exactly scream big city cool either.

I think Grant & Jerry work great together in the vein that the whole is greater than the parts.
My only minor quibble is when Jerry repeats certain pet phrases - like "He shot the ball without ANY hesitiation," for the upteenth time. Ok, I get it already. Also, the "Hawesome" thing is just flat out embarrasing to me. Hope he gets that out of his system soon.

STOP using the word "comparing" please. That is not what he is doing at all. If you don't understand that he is either joking or being sarcastic then i don't know what to tell you. Jerry is Extremely intelligent and knows better than to actually sit there and compare Shareef to Hakeem Olajuwan.

I think it's a nice combination of pure game talk and fun. With most other teams in the league it sounds like your listening to a freakin' radio broadcast from the 50's or to a guy just fresh off his first radio gig. Even when the games are boring at least you know your listening to a couple of guys that aren't going through the motions.

I find Grant and Jerry less homer-ish than the other teams of announcers I've listened to with League Pass. The worst by far are those Golden State Warrior announcers. Good lord they are the biggest homers I've heard calling a game, I have to put it on mute when I watch.

League Pass is a major eye-opener of extreme homerism. These broadcast teams must get paid by the gooey untruths they spout. At times you can LOL at these morons with microphones.

Most of the time I like Reynolds. Sure, he's the old country bumpkin, at least in style. But in substance, I think he does know a lot about basketball, and about talent evaluation. I just wish he would communicate more about the tecnical side of basketball. For example, it would be nice to see him point out why a Kings defense broke down. Who was supposed to rotate, but didn't? What does Hawes need to improve upon to be a better defender? Etc. Instead, he attempts to be amusing and to spend more time on "color" than analysis. I really miss Lawson in that analyst role...
I agree with you on this. Teams tend to hire color analysts based on entertainment value or just player name recognition. For example I can't think, for the life of me, why Knick fans can stand listening to Clyde. Other than being a Knick hall of famer, his voice and overuse of the dictionary is painful to listen to. Hard core fans love the good analysis, but the majority of the audience isn't hard core. That's why the use the word "color" before "analyst". They want fun in the broadcast.
I've been listening to Sac Kings broadcasts since it was Tom Curran and John Lambert. Now that was not a fun pair to listen to, but they knew the game well enough. I can handle Jerry's folksy act and Grant's frequent mistakes. For a while, Grant switched to radio and Gerould did TV. I liked that arrangement and wished it had stayed that way. Grant does a nice job on radio and Gary's informative style played well on TV.
As for Jerry's role he played in how bad the Kings were for the years he was either the coach or "GM", I can't think of one bad mistake that hurt the team. As a coach he had some players that either didn't belong in the NBA, were washed up or disgruntled veterans. Most of those roster mistakes were either Joe Axelson or Bill Russell. As for being the GM, he didn't exactly have Geoff Petrie carte blanche, but he made the Richmond trade which was very good for the team and for Mitch. A lot of the bad trades he had his hand in were really pushed by Dick Motta because he wanted everyone traded. His draft picks of Walt Williams and Bobby Hurley were not spectacular, but there wasn't anyone picked later that was obviously superior then or now. I can think of a number of terrible decisions made by the front office and ownership of the Kings that just absolutely set the franchise back years each time, but none of them were Jerry's doing. If you want to place accurate blame, go for Axelson, Russell, Motta, Lukenbill and Jim Thomas for the truly bad ones.

Whenever people throw out a disclaimer like, Southern Charm, Countryboy, its his sarcasm, he has alot of knowlege but he isnt the best announcer.............or whatever people came up with that love Jerry Reynolds, it has to make you wonder. Is he really good if you have to make a disclaimer? Like when you introduce boy to his blind date and you have to say she has a really great personality and looks better when you have a few drinks..............
I think people have a histroy with him so they feel this urge to back him when really deep down inside they know they roll there eyes at the TV when he opens his mouth. I understand that.
One thing I wanna say positive about Jerry......If he was responsible for getting Mitch Richmond (My fav alltime king) then I really give him props for that. I also agree that he didnt have much to work with as far as player depth when he was Coach. Most of those guys would be today's 10 day contracts if that. I just dont think hes a good announcer.

I don't think it's a disclaimer at all. I think it's acknowledging that he has a certain type of personality and it may not appeal to some people, others may like it a lot and still others may be neutral about it. There aren't many people, if any, that everyone likes.
I don't love him or hate him. He was a mediocre coach and GM. Petrie was light years better at the GM job and Adelman was a much better coach. For the most part, each of those jobs has a lot to do with what you have to work with. As coach, it's the players. As GM, it's the owners. Reynolds would be first to admit that the above is true in all respects. I'm not going to defend him as a color guy because that really comes down to personal preference. It's like arguing whether blue is better than red. What I thought was silly is those making statements that Jerry doesn't know the game or has limited knowledge based upon listening to a broadcast of a game. He clearly knows a good deal about the game and has shown enough competence to stay in the league for 24 years. I still have yet to see somebody pipe up and mention a move Jerry made that was a major mistake as GM or player personel director.

Actually Motta wanted a big center and he liked Schintzius, not Reynolds. But Jerry did make the trade. I'm sorry but that was not even in the top 10 of worst franchise decisions. He also traded Travis Mays for Spud Webb which worked out ok. And yes Motta wanted every veteran player traded because they "challenged" him. He even wanted to trade Richmond near his final days. Motta was a horrible hire and that was an Lukenbill and Benvenuti decision, not Reynolds. Motta got hired because he promised he could win more games with the current roster and then recanted a month after he was hired and asked for much of those same players to be traded. Motta had way too much input into which player moves. Motta was the beginning of the "Welcome to Hell" period as coined by Bobby Hansen to Spud when he showed up. Players hated playing for Motta and everyone wanted to be traded out once they got here. Many think it was like that from the beginning, but it wasn't. Players loved being here even if it was a small town. You wanted specifics, there you go.
Hurley wasn't a bad pick. If he had gotten to play a few years and not been injured in the accident, he could have been a pretty good point guard. He needed to get stronger and work on his outside shot. Most PGs take a few years to develop. So to call him a bust so early is just wrong. And looking at the other players drafted after him, I can't find anything special there, how about you? Maybe you're an Allan Houston or Rodney Rogers fan I guess. They never on my list of guys I wanted badly. When you have Mitch Richmond, Allan Houston isn't really a great pick.
I never called Jerry a genius. He was ok, but nothing special. He was only "GM" for a short time and the rest of the time it was as a player personel director. You have to remember he shared what a normal GM does with Rick Benner. So he never got full control like Petrie has. Jerry made some nothing moves like the Antoine Carr trade and some decent ones like Spud. Now if you want to talk more about franchise setback decisions, we can go back to Joe Axelson...
That was before my time as a Kings fan, but was he really such a bad draft pick? He wasn't a great shooter, but he put up 6.1 assists in 26 minutes (with an A/T of 2.4) in his first 19 games as a pro before his career was derailed by a horrific car accident.
The kid led Duke to two national championships and had a pretty solid start to his NBA career. And the 1993 draft produced very little in the way of big talent, especially below Bobby's 7 slot. There was Cassell at 28 and Van Exel in the second round. Then there was famed malcontent Vin Baker at 8 and Allan Houston at 11. Lindsey Hunter at 10? The rest of the draft was nothing but ick.
Tough to call out Reynolds for a bad draft pick on that one.
