Jason Thompson

He's had 6 head coaches in 7 years. He's gotten little opportunity to be a featured offensive player. He went through the ownership/relocation struggles. He takes a ton of crap from us fans. He's had 66 different teammates. And yet every year, every month, every week, every day, he's coming into our crummy little town, into our crummy little arena, on time, on schedule, never late, never absent, to hustle his ass off for a team that has had no success and has had bleak prospects of doing so for his entire tenure. Baring Pete D'Alessandro muckery, he's going to become the longest tenured Sacramento player. In doing so, he's become my favorite King of all time.

Folks, can we get a round of applause for...Jason Thompson?

Yeah, but... he's crummy, though.

Signed,
Jason Thompson hater

I've been saying for quite sometime now....he needs a change of scenery. It would really do him some good, maybe someone can teach him how to move his feet properly on defense and stop playing defense with your hands all the time. Kudos JT.

Yeah. He probably knows more about the organization than all the coaching staff, players, and many members of the front office. He's seen it all. I would prefer if he retired here, just so he can be "that guy". If he's gone too far, why not just try to go all the way?

Fixed.

JT is an average at best NBA player talent wise, regardless of work ethic. His whining has improved which was absolutely pathetic until this year - finally! His BBIQ has always been mediocre. All of it adds up to a basketball player who long ago simply reached his max ceiling in the NBA. Would probably not be PF starter on 29 other teams. It's ok, he is who he is.

I'm unclear here: the tone of your post suggests that you think Thompson shouldn't be here, but nothing in your post indicates why.

thats bc he had a role? remember keith smart? i believe he had him at SF for a minute. he needs a role and some continuity. malone provided that for him and he excelled.

I wish I got paid $25,000,000 for showing up to my job on time and working hard in just 7 years.

I like JT, I will always root for him. I really think he would be a great first big off the bench. Unfortunately we don't have a ton of bargaining chips right now and this team is in desperate need of talent. If we can package him with other assets for someone better you have to do it.

My problem with him has always been the amount and length of his contract extension, not as a player himself.

And no OP, Richmond and Wayman are gonna be my favorite Kings for a long time most likely.

Here, about the only applause you'll get from me.

My thoughts exactly.

I am, at least, eighty-five percent in favor of trading Jason Thompson to make the team better. I do not believe that he is so bad that we could trade him for literally anybody, and it would make us better, and the question of whom I would trade him for is best left to a different thread.

I am zero percent in favor of trading Jason Thompson just to "get rid of him." If we got rid of all of the players that somebody on KF.com hates, we wouldn't have any players left; there's not a single player on this team that is unanimously liked on this message board, not even the franchise.

dude will never be a stud. I think we saw his ceiling under Malone, but that ceiling didn't look too bad at all next to Cuz. I for one look forward to seeing what kind of role Karl puts him in. He'll never be an eye-catching player, but i agree with some of the other posters - give him a solid, and CONSISTENT role to play, and i think he's a nice player to have around.

I've always liked Jason. All season I have questioned the limited minutes he,s played for a starter. Don't understand it. I suspect he was on the new owner's list of who to get rid of when the opportunity provided itself. If the Kimgs had decent PF besides JT then I would think Thompson would be a perfect backup center to Cuz.

What if it turns out that George Karl is all the change of scenery he needs?

I suspect there are a number of players, Thompson perhaps the prime example, that Karl will get a lot more out of. Karl is not a one system guy. He's similar to Adelman and Pop in that he can modify slightly to maximize his players. On that list of players I think are likely to see a spike in their production I would put:

1. JT
2. McLemore
3. Sessions
4. Omri
5. McCallum

People say we lack talent, but I say we don't know that because talent (at least non-superstar level) depends on having a coach that puts you in positions to contribute. It's not like baseball. It's such team game.

This was beginning to happen under Malone this year, which really was his first year as coach of THIS team (roster turnover was huge from begin of last season to begin this season). With Karl, we may finally see what this team can do.

McCallum seems to sponge up a lot, he is going to be on the bench a decent amount too.

I would not be surprised if he has a rather large leap in quality play sometime next season just from being around Karl and observing a few things.

The only other players I see possible significant growth to would be McLemore...... maybe Cousins and Rudy with leadership skills too.

He played great defense and was blocking 2 shots a game and getting 10 rebounds and hustling his ass off under Malone.. I feel JT gets alot of flak, his minutes get jerked around, Derrick Williams of all people took his spot because of "pace". It is no surprise the defense faltered even more so when he started getting limited playing time.

Interesting that we could probably replace Jason Thompson's name with Tyrone Corbin's in this thread, same idea going on right now. I've kind of reached a point with both of these guys that it is really too bad what has happened, but the damage is done, may not be right, but it is what it is. I'm sure under better coaching and more stable management Jason Thompson could definitely have been a better player, but that can be said about a lot of players. I'm sure it goes the other way too, there were probably many players who were just kind of average coming out of college, but ended up playing for a better coach, with better players, and had a quality front office that turned into great players, maybe even star players. Jason Thompson wasn't so fortunate.

In my opinion at this point you have what you have with him. Most players don't change much at this point. He does work hard, all indications are that he stays in great shape, practices hard, and when motivated such as earlier in the season he plays with a lot of effort, I respect that. However he simply isn't good at much other than one on one post defense. For his size he is a poor rebounder, doesn't block or alter shots, doesn't pass well, has bad hands, and a low basketball IQ. He will always be limited no matter who the coach is. Now I do think a coach such as George Karl can get him motivated so we always get that effort and his post defense will always be there and it can be very helpful at times. Overall though if I had my choice I think moving Thompson would be best for him and us, if possible.

Also just to be clear on stats, this is about what Thompson was averaging:
With Malone: 5.0 Points, 6.5 Rebounds, and 0.5 Blocked Shots
With Corbin: 6.5 Points, 6.5 Rebounds, and 0.5 Blocked Shots

Points actually went up a little with Corbin as coach, everything else was about the same and I think that is about what you'll get with him under any coach. I will say that the effort and defense were much better when Malone was coach, forget the stats, I would take that Thompson any day over the other. Another point, Derrick Williams didn't take Thompson's spot, minutes were also consistent under both coaches for Thompson. Casspi is the one who lost out with Derrick Williams, in fact it actually seemed like that was a major issue between Malone and the front office, Malone preferred Casspi, the front office preferred Williams, the minute reversal was drastic.

JT's main contribution has been his defense on high quality, tall PF, a task no one else on the team is able to do. A new coach may bring him into the offensive flow and if he can be a 10/10 guy night on night and get a few blocks and steals, he is a very serviceable PF. If Kings end up with a higher end PF then he mentors then comes off the bench. In this day and age he is quite affordable now.

DMC can, but would foul out easily

Boooooooo all of you. I make a JT appreciation thread and it gets poo-poo'd all over like this?

Is this your first visit to Kingsfans.com?

For the record, not everybody was negative but I think you would have known to expect this knowing how divisive discussions have been about pretty much everything around here lately.

Jason Thompson sucks! The sooner he's off this team, the better. I definitely won't miss him one bit, if he is traded

Yeah this is the same JT who i saw at R15 a few weeks ago. Literally getting hammered a few hours after we lost to the clips. I mean im not faulting the guy for wanting to have fun but me, my friends and brothers see him out way too often. Combine that with his low bball IQ, terrible touch around the rim, lack of any post move 7 years in....a jumper that has gotten worse....

well thats all ill say

His defense has been good against a pack of elite PF though and he does rebound the ball so ill give him that!

but if you wanna applaud a guy for being a mini celebrity in Sacramento and getting paid millions of dollars to play a game then go right ahead.
