Jason Jones: Don't expect kings to make a splash in free agency

I didn't expect them to. I'm sure they'll shore up a few positions with some minor signings, but unless a no brainer comes along, that will be it.

Outside of an undrafted rookie or Ryan Thompson I don't see the team doing anything. Unless LBJ calls them up and says he wants to come here of course.

This is actually the first summer I can remember being fine with the thought of the team standing pat. They're young enough to have the luxury of seeing how the new big men fit in and then make adjustments from there.

Besides, I'm really that excited about DMC.

I want to see what Cisco can do next to Tyreke but I don't see him as our starting SG when we're really pushing for a playoff run. Signing Anthony Morrow would be nice but does he play defense?

Spoke w/ Geoff Petrie. Don't expect #nbakings to make a splash in free agency.

What do you guys think of that? I still think they'll probably sign a shooting/combo guard to shore up our backcourt.

I am cool with it!

In fact that should be the way we go about it. I am sure GP will be looking at a couple of players that will provide some shooting and a back up PG.

I would think he would be interested in someone like Mike Miller and might make a few enquiries there but he won't be going after anyone that will demand big money or long term deal.

If Petrie can sign another SG who can shoot, handle the ball and play solid D, and find a 3rd string PG to provide some shooting and change of pace off the bench, I think it would be a great summer.

None of these LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Amare, JJ, Dirk, Boozer etc names. It will be more like Mike Miller etc... someone who will be a willing role player and provide some veteran presence. Mike Miller would just about be the ideal pick up for us on a 2-3 year deal.

I have a feeling Dalembert is going to become a sort of quiet leader by example for this team, he'll be oldest of our rotation players (close with Garcia), but he's just received a very prestigious humanitarian award, which will give him more respect and clout in the locker room. He seems to be a strong character guy. I feel that that is the type of leadership that we need, not so much a floor leader, Tyreke is growing into that. We just need some grown ups on the team to demonstrate adulthood. I also feel that Brockman's work ethic and maturity are going to be an important ingredient. When you have guys that play that hard, and work that hard, it kind of sets the tone. It provides a huge value to for the rest of the team. Nobody can really slack if people like Brockman are around. I actually feel pretty good about our "leadership situation".

From what everyone is saying Damebert is kinda stupid, so I doubt he will be silent anything. He will think he deserves starter minutes over Cousins and will complain if he doesn't get them, even if he doesn't deserve them. There was a reason Sixers wanted him gone its because he was a hassel, and even worse they took on a bust and a bad contract to do it. Does that say he is a good leader, or a good locker room veteran???

I'm asking if Morrow is an over-all better player than Cisco. I know that he's younger but I haven't really seen him play.

I don't know if he is a better overall plalyer than Cisco, but he is younger and has yet to fully show us what he can do. I think with Cisco we pretty much know what we are going to get (if he can stay healthy). Morrow handles the ball well and is one of the best shooters in the league IMO. However, I don't think he has the passing ability of Cisco. It is hard to tell about his defense when he played for a team that didn't ask any of it's players to actually try to play defense.

Not surprised at all. All the guys we've talked about, Mike Miller, Reddick, Korver, or Morrow, aren't considered "making a splash" type players. Especially not in the summer of Lebron.

I do see us signing a FA or two, and think we will have a few options after the dust settles. Now, doing a little research and figuring out what the options may be is beyond the intellectual scope of Jason Jones, which doesn't surprise me either.

I like Mo Evans or Rashad McCants not sure why but I really liked Rashad that year he played with us same for Evans. I can't put my finger on it but they just fit.

I'm going to give this the old co-sign.

We need a backup guard, thats about it. Greene and Omri both need their minutes at the 3, with JT and Mandry we're set at PF, Beno did great in his new role, Reke (nuff said), and Im still giddy over our makeover at the 5.

I mean, Petrie still might overpay some marginal guy with an MLE but I'm not really pining over any of the allstar FAs. Our young team has a TON of potential. We'll have a lot of homegrown allstars in the next couple of seasons.

I am quite satisfied with our team right now and dont think we need to add any FA to our roster.
We need a 3 point shooter but since we anyway wont run for a playoffs spot (but who knows:rolleyes:) I´d rather give Omri and Donte as much PT as possible to prove they can fill up this open spot..

Misspelling his name was kinda stupid.

so I doubt he will be silent anything. He will think he deserves starter minutes over Cousins and will complain if he doesn't get them, even if he doesn't deserve them.

Exactly who in their right mind would be putting up 8 pts and 9 rebounds with a backup putting up 18-10 and be complaining about not getting enough minutes? If Cousins is abusing Sam in practice and putting up crazy #'s, better #'s than Dalembert, do you honestly think Dalembert is going to complain about Cousins getting more minutes than him? Dalembert was complaining in Philly because Eddie Jordan was an IDIOT, which is why he was fired. Quit making **** up.

There was a reason Sixers wanted him gone its because he was a hassel, and even worse they took on a bust and a bad contract to do it. Does that say he is a good leader, or a good locker room veteran???

The Sixers wanted him gone because he was eating away at their capspace thanks to their bonehead signing of Elton Brand on top of overpaying Dalembert, not because of anything Sam did. He will be just fine in a place where he feels the coach will use him properly and the fans (unlike Philly fans) will show him the love.

This is a remarkably low quality post. Blanket statements with nothing to back it up. Like another poster said, quit making **** up. If you need to make **** up to sound like you know what you are talking about, you shouldn't be talking. And I do find it quite funny that you misspelled his name in that sentence. Next time you make a ton of money and devote much of your time and that money to helping other people (he was doing it even before the earthquake), let me know. I think Sammy's got you beat on character.

I really felt that Joe Johnson would be a good addition to the team, and that he and Tyreke could get along well together. But I don't have any desire to see him maxed out, and would rather let Cisco field that starting SG spot to see how he can handle it.
So other than LBJ (who really should consider the Kings if he wants to win 5+ championships), I don't think any of the other major FAs should be considered by Petrie.

If we end up signing a Mike Miller, JJ Redick, Anthony Morrow, that will be fine provided that we don't overpay for their services.

To be honest, I'd prefer to just re-sign Dominic McGuire, and the best back-up PG/SG that Petrie sees in the summer league.
Keep it cheap, and focus your time developing the immense young talent already on the squad.
As long as we don't overpay for mediocre talent (See Detroit last off-season *wince*) , I'll be pleased with almost any direction Petrie goes in, even if it means no more 'impact' acquisitions.

Not to defend the quality of the original dalembert post, but there are big concerns about sammy's lockerroom behavior. There were frequent reports in Philly the last two years about him complaining over minutes, touches, offensive plays called for him and issues with his practice mentality. Does it mean he's an hopeless cancer? Of course not. But he also isn't a great veteran presence to lead the young guys by example. At least not now.

I had Sammy on some of my fantasy teams so followed him closely... I am not sure if you saw many of the games but if you did I think you would probably understand why he was complaining. The coaching/rotations were ridiculous. Kind of like how Tyrus Thomas was in Chicago before he got traded. Many people might see these two as a "cancer" to their teams, but in the end their actions ended up helping them move into better situations. Situations that benefit both the players and the teams they have moved onto.

Dude, the Kings pretty much have their nine-men rotation already. What this teams needs is just some third-string guys as insurance. Unless one of the elite FA wants to come here (isn't going to happen) there is absolutely no need to make a splash in free agency.

Well the problem with saying the Kings have a good set rotation is that it is more hopeful than fact. The legit question is are we getting a 100% healthy Cisco back or not? Petrie has stated publicly, that he would like to add another shooter either through the draft or free agency. I think Tyreke and Beno are a given. Cisco in that rotation if healthy. But given Beno and Cisco's history of spotty availability due to injury and it would be wise to add at least another quality guard to the roster.

Geoff Petrie told someone what he was going to do??? Not bloody likely.

^ This. Even if Petrie already knew he was standing pat I don't think he would announce it. Therefore, if Jones ends up being right, and we do ultimately fail to "make a splash", I think it would be a good guess based on a speculation as opposed to it being based on source information.

As an aside, IF it's true, and Petrie said that, I think he is defining "splash" as LB, Bosh, JJ, Amare or Wade. I don't think it means he's going to just sit back entirely. I think there will be signings, but not of the aforementioned superstar caliber.

Yes, we have to add somebody, the minimum players on a roster is 13 and Kings have to add bodies to make up the numbers. The point is, we probably have no room for a MLE guy.

Kings are deep in the wing position (at least in quantity, quality remains to be seen) , it isn't a big deal if Cisco or Beno or both goes down. Unless the expectation is to make the playoff, which certainly isn't my mine. If either Beno or Cisco is injured, simply means Casspi or Greene will get more mins. If both goes down, Dominic McGuire or whoever takes his place will step up; or the third string PG will move into the starting lineup.

It sounds like you and I are making the same point but we're talking thru each other.

we need to improve our record, which will happen obviously and then a big name free agent next year will hopefully come.
