It looks grim...

Here's a somewhat off-topic question:

Did you guys prefer it when most of the coaches were straight out of the college game, but the overall quality of play wasn't as high, or how it is now, when it seems like half the coaches are angling for NBA jobs?

I love being a fan and watching both the Kings and Monarchs. I would consider myself a die-hard fan of both teams, when they lose, I feel like I have lost. I believed whole-heartedly that the Kings would beat the Spurs, and felt the pain of seeing them not advance. That being said, if I absolutely had to choose only one team to follow, it would be the Monarchs. Whatever goes down in the upcoming days, I will continue to support both teams and follow them on their quests to bring the championships to Sac Town!

I want coaches who are given the chance to succeed and implement a system period. I don't care particularly where they come from. That's been more of a problem in this league - its win NOW or you're out. The revolving door hs been an embarassment. (Read: Phx and DC in particular). That's why there are still few if any upper eschelon college coaches running to make the leap to come in. And once one team makes a NBA wannabe as its head coach and has some success, it becomes a hot trend.

Because of the pay scale and presumably more job security, the lure to go to the NBA is always going to be there - but the argument has always been that you can't go from the W to the NBA. Whiz and to some extent Laimbeer maybe challenge that notion. Ron Rothstein I think is to only W coach to have gone back to a pro bench and stick long term. If Whiz makes the move and if he has some success then you'll see more of the treatment of the W as minor league dues paying stop along the way to the NBA bench.

I think the change in the quality of play has a lot more to do with an influx of talent to this league. There is a heckuva lot more athleticism in this league right now and more is on the way with as gifted a group of draft classes that will continue to roll into the league for the next decade.

I am a true fan of Basketball....WNBA,NBA,COLLEGE,HIGH-SCHOOL,INTERNATIONAL,USA....My favorite is WNBA, because you get a chance talk to the players, watch them practice, enjoy events , listen to coaching clinics. I guess you just feel apart of the team, which is why this whole issue is hitting so close to home for me.

An oversight, I assure you... :o

Haven't seen you around lately, KG; where you been hiding?

Got a new job and been working my behind off, longer hours, since it's salary:D

I have huge mixed feelings about the Whisnant situation. Once again, the way that this situation is being handled, the timing is all wrong for the Monarchs. It seems like the Maloofs have become good at making questionable decisions lately at odd times.

I think the world of Coach Whisnant and I think he will be fine with the Kings. I do not blame him for any of this. How many of us would turn down millions of dollars to coach a child's game. I hope the Kings choose someone else, but Whisnant can and will get the job done in Kings land.

As far as the Monarchs are concerned......

.....I do not want Coach T period. He is a buffoon.

I just dont get that Ambers or Schuman are head coach material. So I think the Monarchs are screwed for this year anyway you look at it, and that is ashamed.

As much as I like Ambers and Shuman, I'd be pissed if either of them is selected to fulfill the job this year or permanently. Coach T I maybe could live with.

I was going to post a flippant response in one of the threads down the hall, but I'm also starting to get the feeling that if Whiz is the guy they hire, that press conference will be scheduled for tomorrow or on some Monarch game day just to further twist the knife in. Yes, I'm bitter.

I am hoping the Announcement will be after the Seattle Game. I fact I would Think the best time would be Next Wednesday after they ge back from PHX.

The team would have a few day to adjust to the transition and they would have their first game with a New Coach at home.

But I am thinking about the Wellfare of the Monarchs and why should that be an issue. It hasn't up til this point.

Then again Maybe the Sooner the Better.

Yes, I'm bitter.

I'm with you, MBF. I could probably live with Coach T, but he is really a counter-point to Coach Whiz's intensity. He's the good cop to Whiz's bad cop. He's the moral support and jokester.

In his previous head coaching experiences, he definitely took on the "bad cop" role, and maybe overdid it (or didn't have an assistant to offset it). I don't think he'd be able to find a mid-point between his two personas, so he is not a long-term solution.

That said, today's Bee had the intriguing suggestion of Michael Cooper. It really gags me to have a former Sparks coach step in tp the Monarchs, but he probably has the best handle on Whiz's style and certainly has the credentials to get the job done. Whether he would attempt a re-tool of the system at this point is one good question. But he might be more familiar with Whiz's white line defense than any other available coach (not currently in the employ of MS&E), simply becuase he's played for Whiz before.

I've also had the feeling that opposing coaches have spent the off-season breaking down the white line offense (all those weak side threes from Houston and Chicago show there is a flaw to be exploited), so having someone tweak with the program (but not dismantle it) might not be a bad idea.

So, I'm adding Cooper to my list of "okay" replacements. At this point, I'm certain it is a done deal and they are only delaying the announcement to get the replacement team in place.

Well, let's all get out there tomorrow and root for the team -- they are the focus of our fandom anyway.

GO MONARCHS!!!!

I wonder if the Kings would be able to adjust to Whiz's style. They are not exactly like the girls and don't do the defense thing like he does. Could it be another Coach Bibby thing in the offing?

Ditto!!! What he said^^^

Ok, so almost a full week from the embarrassing Houston game and we are still in limbo with our Coach. Articles are popping up all over the place talking about the whole scenario... but I found one that has a small, *small* tidbit in it that might just make us smile. Cause really, no one else has come out and said this in print, except maybe us. And it has nothing to do with the current crapola going on... just an added aside to the article that we might appreciate.

Whisenant may leave...
By: Clay Kallam

He has not only been a successful coach -- managing to convince professional athletes to buy into playing defense -- but a very astute general manager, and he won the WNBA title last year. (An aside: Connecticut Sun supporters mention every chance they get that they coulda/shoulda/woulda won the WNBA title if Lindsay Whalen hadn't been hurt; the Monarchs' injuries were worse, and had DeMya Walker and Ticha Penicheiro been 100% for the playoffs, it very likely wouldn't have mattered if Whalen were healthy.)
 It's a short article, but worth the quick read. Actually takes a look at things from the Monarchs perspective, which is nice to see for a change.

That weakness has always been there and teams that shoot well from the perimeter can and did exploit it. Remember a couple of seasons ago when if you were the opposing SF for some team you ate us for lunch AND dinner. Houston has better shooters from the perimeter last week than they had when it was just Swoopes we needed to worry about because Tina was in and out of the line up when we saw them.

If I'm going to be dregged kicking and screaming with this move, then WHY NOT further pile it on by making me embrace the his royal evilness of the evil empire? Sure, if those are my choices....Cooper makes the most sense. I think we're being primed for that possible eventuality too.

Yay, I'm glad someone put it in print. Thanks MMB. I'm taking my brother and his wife to the Storm game tonight. They're from out of town, so I choose to offer them only the best. :D I hope the Monarchs are rarin' to go.

Looks like the 'Narchs took out their last loss on Seattle.

I really don't like Lauren Jackson, she's a terrible sport and she should have been kicked out of the game after two instances that should have been technicals.

She's in town at least once a season so I'm not sure why all of a sudden she needed an introduction. My guess is that since her sister is on the Seattle staff, she made the trip down.

Part of MBF's post about Stanford's Tara Vanderveer:
She's in town at least once a season so I'm not sure why all of a sudden she needed an introduction. My guess is that since her sister [Heidi] is on the Seattle staff, she made the trip down.

And that Heidi was once the Monarchs' head coach! :)

I've never cared for her attitude, either. Not the first time she has displayed bad sportsmanship.
