Isn't Landry another K9?

#1
I didn't really know much about Landry before watching him play his frist couple of games for the Kings. And then I saw a little footage on youtube. But honestly, he kind of reminds me a little of Kenny Thomas. Not that there's anything wrong with that. K-9 used to be a double double guy. But just worried about the lack of height at the PF position. Any thoughts?

Landry is such a better offensive player than Thomas. Landry is a real threat in the post, a much stonger finisher, and can shoot the ball wayyy better than Kenny ever could. Thomas might be a slighty better rebounder/defender ( in his prime ) but overall, Landry is a better player. A cheaper player, too.

Landry's offensive skills set him apart from K9. Similar in their down low rebounding style and in size but little else.

Kenny was actually a considerably better rebounder. But Landry is a far more advanced offensive player. Just kind of apples and oranges.

I was kinda thinking same thing... except Landry has a truly great attitude. Looking at him running around out on the court, he does remind me of a more skilled young KT though.

I really hope if we resign him next year for some big bucks he doesn't become the albatross that KT was...

Just the fact that Landry is a steady, skilled post player makes him nothing like Thomas. Carl may not ever be a 20-10 guy (so few front court player are) but he might very well be an 18-8 kind of solid starter for the Kings. I think fans are going to like him a lot (like they did in Houston) and hopefully for a long-time - not just through next season.

Kenny Thomas was good for a double double when he was Landry's age. Imagine if he ever played with any intensity, he could have been even better.

Oh, and Landry's not getting paid $8 million per. That was the main problem with Kenny Thomas.

There's been the undersized power forward thing being thrown around again. I've always been one of those guys that believes, if you can play, you can play. However, I've done this before so I'll do it again. Just to show what his competition is, here are the height stats of most of the recogonizable PF's around the league without shoes. I guess some prefer to wear highheels, so to keep it fair and honest, I went with the none shoes measurements. I'll start with those the same height as Landry.

Karl Landry: 6' 7.75"
Glen Davis: 6' 7.75"
Carlos Boozer: 6' 7.75"
Udonis Haslem: 6' 7.75"
Kevin Love: 6' 7.75"
Darrell Arthur: 6' 7.75"
David Lee: 6' 7.75"
Jeff Green: 6' 7.75"

Now I'll list the giant PF's:

Chris Bosh: 6' 10.25"
Charlie Villanueva: 6' 9"
Al Horford: 6' 8.75" (actually plays center, but he's a PF)

OK, now that we've got them out of the way, here are those that are just slightly taller:

Blake Griffin: 6' 8.5"
Taj Gibson: 6' 8.5"
Al Jefferson: 6' 8.5"
Marcus Haislip: 6' 8.5"
Amare Stoudemire: 6' 8.5"
Tyler Hansbrough: 6' 8.25"
David West: 6' 8.25"
Ronny Turiaf: 6' 8"

Here are those slightly shorter than Landry:

Hakim Warrick: 6' 7.25"
Tyrus Thomas: 6' 7.25"
Justin Williams: 6' 7.25" (just for the Justin fans)
Michael Beasley: 6' 7"
Sean May: 6' 7"
Josh Smith: 6' 7"
Ike Diogu: 6' 6.5"
Paul Millsap: 6' 6.25"
Joey Dorsey: 6' 6.25"
Brandon Bass: 6' 6.25"

So there's virtually a who's who's of PF's in the NBA. As you can see, there's perception and there's reality. And the reality is that most PF's are about the same height as Landry. And yeah, I know I left out JT, because the only official stats on his height were from college and he measure out at around 6' 9.5" without shoes. But since it didn't come from the combine, which he didn't attend, I thought I'd just leave him out. Besides, he's on our team, so who cares as long as Landry doesn't have to match up with him.

Height isn't everything tough. Landry still has to be one of the "stubbiest" PF's in the league with a standing reach of only about 8'6.5". For comparison purposes, Boozer has a 9'1" standing reach. Now, much like Brockman, it probably does aid him in the power department. From what I've seen thusfar Landry is a very strong dude.

yeah Landry's much more explosive than K9 ever was... much better all around game... K9 did have the "answer" or the original A.I. in his prime hooking him up for easy baskets... that really made K9 look better than he was on offense...

We will all be really happy with Landry by the end of the year...

WOW thanks for that true height list, I bookmarked this thread to refer to later. Wow Tyrus Thomas is listed at 6' 10" but you report 6' 7.25" wow those most be some real platform shoes he wears! :p
Us guys with our size egos!!! ;)

Tyler Hansbrough: 6' 8.25"
David West: 6' 8.25"
Ronny Turiaf: 6' 8"
Not that it really matters, but Marcus Haislip is no longer in the NBA (and he wasn't really playing when he was anyway). He is back in Europe - I think with Panathinaikos, if I'm not mistaken.

Still, Kenny Thomas used to have a decent jumpshot and post game. I still don't know what happend when Musselman got hired. I remember they told Kenny to focus on rebounding, but it seems he hit the delete button on offensive skills too.

Landry is better offensively, and K9 is a better rebounder..

Not much same except the height, but Landry isn't much more than a 6th man type.. We shouldn't be starting him.

Where is Pau Gasol on that list? Landrys gonna have to go head to head with him many times in the near future. Unless we get Bosh ;)
I only used players that I could legitimate measurements for. As I couldn't get the measurements for Gasol I left him off the list. Same reason I left Thompson off the list.

My bad. Hard to keep track of all the players in the league. Especially the borderline one's.. Thanks for the correction. :)

Not to be a nag, since you went to all the trouble of putting together that list, but happened to Dirk, KG, Aldridge, Scola, Pau? Also Jamison, although he's probably about the same height. Speights and Brand come to mind (one taller, one shorter/same height) Frye is taller, but a wuss.

We can't just selectively omit all the tall guys and say our guy is average because of it. ;)

say what you want about Napear, but name someone else that's announced the NBA, NHL, NFl and is a regular fill-in host on the biggest sports radio show in America?

He's also considerably younger than KT was when he came here. KT was once a useful NBA player. The thing with undersized bigs is that they tend to have shorter career arcs, because once their athleticism goes, it's harder for them to on both sides of the ball. Size doesn't deteriorate like speed and athleticism. Still, Landry should have another 3-4 very good years left in him.

Offensively, I see a comparison to more of this dude than anything. I mean the 1998 version of Reef with some more strength. Landry has some real quick feet that Reef possessed.
