One thing I've noticed is Bibby has gotten huge in the last couple years. I've heard he spends alot of time in the gym but is it too much? The extra strength is useless at his position unless he is going to post up other gaurds in which case he doesn't. The extra muscle adds weight which makes him slower and effects his shot. We need speed, quickness and his shooting but all that is fading with the extra mass he is adding.
Any thoughts on this?
Not particularly buying it, but who knows. Baron Davis has a big upper body too, seems to be doing just fine. Have a feeling people are just looking for some explanation and doing the a+b MUST equal c thing. Mike turned in a career year last year -- has he bulked up THAT much over the summer? Not really. Its possible that in preparation for season in whihc he as going to try to take over as "the man" he tried to prep his body, in particular after wearing down last year. But enough to magically destroy his shot and make him lose 2 steps? No way.
If the bulk is effecting his shot, it wil be a temprary thing. He wil adjust. He's nowhere NEAR so big that his muscles would physically interfere wiht his form or anything. Again, think people are really stretching for an explanation.
Hard to tell if the bulk effects his quickness on defense. I'll be able to tell you more the next, and first, time he actually drops into a defensive stance rather than standing bolt upright. That's not bulk, its incredibly bad defnsive form/laziness.
On offense, Mike was never quick. Never. Quick with the ball, yes. But he's been on the slow side since he entered the league. Just not a world class athlete. And what we may be seeing here is that, bulk or not, Mike's role has changed as we tore down the old team. There is no more Doug Christie to bring the ball up while Mike plays OG. Nor Bobby Jackson for the same. No more incredible passing centers and PFs to let Mike play off the ball as a shooter. He was perfect for the former role. But bulk or not, are his game and physical abilities really suited for a mroe traditional PG role bringing the ball upt he floor every time, handling it every time? Mike has always worked best in a box. He's never been Nash. And being built up has never had anything to do with it.
