After my interview with JT, I got a couple of minutes with Pete Youngman the Kings Trainer. He indicated he does not do media interview so off went the recorder and we just chatted for a couple of minutes.
I was curious about why I always see him with a clipboard during time outs during games. I asked him what other tasks he does during games other that bandaids and "don't-hurt-no-more spray". He indicated that he keeps track of the team's time outs, player fouls, team fouls, technical fouls and time on the clock and such so the assistant coaches can stick with the game and player performances.
I wondered if the team trainers as a group get together to update medical knowledge specifically related to the NBA and basketball. He said sure, once a year in Chicago during the pre-draft camps all team trainers get together for a week to up date on all sports medical issues and sports medicine technology. All Trainers are Certified Pro Athlete Trainers as well.
As I walked out of the team assembly area there was Kayte Christiansen. In all her casual glory looking like she stepped out of a casual glamour magazine. Now, who could pass up a couple of minutes with Kayte? I asked her what brought her to Las Vegas for summer league. She indicated she was part of a Kings web site doing interviews, providing information about the team and players and providing a fill-in location for all Kings fans. Boy, was it hard to concentrate and keep looking eye-to-eye with her (I'm 6-4 and she was eye-to-eye with me). But Kayte is very personable and easy to talk with about her work.
It was time to go rescue my car in the 115° heat that friday afternoon. As I walked out behind press row I saw a group of Kings fans wearing their various Kings shirts sitting just a row up from press row. We immediately recognized each other from previous summer league sessions. Turns out it was the "Citrus Heights fan club" (so to speak) of Bill Johnson, Alan Edwards and Wes Matthews who come to summer league nearly every year for a "boys out week" to watch the Kings summer league team. Sitting among them was none other than Wes Matthews the 2-guard who saw considerable playing time with the Kings summer league team. Turns out he was playing for the Utah Jazz summer team in the Orlando Summer League in Florida before the Kings asked him to play on their the Vegas Summer League team. hmmm......
