I believe the rebuilding has begun

Hi everyone I am new by the way. Just wanted to give my 2 cents. I think the Kings are doing an ok job if rebuilding is actually what they are trying to accomplish. Bringing in the young players is a great idea. However we still have to see how they perform and contribute to the team. Hawes is coming on a lil slower than I had hoped for. Maybe Thompson will strive right away. I watch everyday for the news of a Ron Ron trade , but no such luck just yet. Anyways its nice to meet everyone and I look forward to good conversations on this forum.

yea i also think that the addition of the younger guys can be good if they can get minutes and contribute to the team. I also thought that hawes would have been better during the summer league
your not the only one who is watching the news and i read the paper for ron/bill william trade deals
but no such luck yet

Welcome to Kingsfans.com, Everyone has their own opinions on how the rebuilding is going. I for one think GP is not taking any risks or maybe there are just no takers for Ron or Miller at this point. Only GP really knows for sure. Anyways welcome again.

Thanks sacgirl and upinsmoke. I understand everyone has their own opinion on the rebuilding issue. This is the great thing about forums, it provokes discussion. I appreciate the welcome guys.

i think the kings made some mistakes but its ok. it looks like they're signing alot of young guys and hopefully some of them will turn out to be ballers.

HA HA WARHAWK good call. Are you a fan of the movie?

Used to be one of my favorites.

"Can't rain all the time." ;)

Check out the movie draft thread in the lounge - someone took it in their selections a while back.

I would agree, In my opinion there biggest mistake was not making a move on draft day to either move up or acquiring two first round picks. GP might as well not show up on any draft days and just send Jerry Reynolds.

Again, people assume simply wanting to move up in the draft is enough to make it so.

I think Jason Thompson was an excellent pick, someone who will quite possibly prove to be a valuable asset to the Kings.

I'd like to know how people can decide it was a mistake of the Kings NOT to move up.

I agree. Alot of great players were picked late in the draft. Take Kobe for instance I think he was like the 23rd pick. Dont quote me on that but all Im saying is I think Thompson was our best choice.

My biggest concern with this "rebuild" is the lack of a defensive core. So far the verdict on THomas is that he is a below average defender, even for a rookie. Hawes has also shown that he isnt that good at rebounding and defense.

As far as moving up goes, if you like a player you should go get them. If you like a player noone else does you should figure out a way to pick that player at the right time, and get some value in return. I don't know what Petrie was looking at, but to me, it seems as though he may have missed out getting as much value as he could.

I wait to say we are in full rebuild mode until I see what we get for McBillBill.

I too think that the Kings are doing pretty well at rebuilding. We have a core of young talented players, but we have a group of old veterans sucking up cap space. It will be crucial to our rebuilding to get rid of those contracts. Hopefully, Artest can be traded along with one of those players for a good player or two (I would rather have some picks).

I also think that the Kings need to be cautious. A rebuilding team still needs veterans to help "mold" the youngens.

It would have been nice to make some moves and get land someone like Mcgee as well as Thompson. I just hate watching other teams make deals while we just sit on our hands.

I agree that we need vets around to mentor the new players. The question is do we have any vets worthy of doing it? I think if Miller really set his mind to it he could be a great mentor. Its hard to tell these days whats going on.

Dont tell that to portland.

Its really not clear what GP really doing if he is just waiting for the bad contracts to expire or if he is working on some kind of a master plan.

Kobe was the 13th overall pick, right before Predrag Stojakovic. People booed my main man GP for the pick. People wanted him to take Walter McCarty.

Thanks for the correction. I knew he wasnt in the top 5 though. Goes to show you that you never know what your gonna get from a pick.

I will quote you on this :) He was picked 13th by Charlotte then Traded to LA for Vlade and something i think

When Miller gets moved then its rebuilding until then where just mediocre. I cant bealive we traded Bibby and not Miller AGHHH!

Some of us Kings folk who've been around awhile (pre 1990's) may prefer to call the current task "re-tooling". As in re-tooling to go from a Ford F-150 to a Shelby Cobra with 24" tires (have you seen Jason's feet?? Size 20 I think!).

The KT and SAR legacy should work itself out this summer, one way or the other. The Brad-Hawes transition at the 5 is likely in 09-10 if Brad is here all year. The Mikki-Jason transition is looking more and more like it could be this year at the 4. Beno/Brown/Singletary could be the PG's for a bunch of years and Kevin is our BMOC at the 2.

That leaves the 3 and RonRon. I think Salmons can step up into that position and the Kings would gain some steps both offensively and defensively. Cisco is our Ginobli for the time being. Douby either will be the backup for Kevin or not. Ewing is a work in progress and big unknown due to his injury in Summer League. Same goes for Shelden. He could well be the #3 guy at the PF or........ Hard to say.

Tweaking here and there and solving the RonRon situation should put the Kings on solid ground along with a quite a bit of KingsFans patience. So the retooling has one more kink to smooth out and we should have deja vu all over again a la 1998.

this is some really slow rebuilding... and i cant even tell what kind of rebuild that they are shooting for... mediocrity is not something that i look for in basketball... i like hawes and i like what ive seen of thompson... but do either players have that superstar potential?

martin looks like he'll always be that 2nd tier, good player on a bad team, star... i love him too but thats what he looks like. beno wouldve been a great back up... not really looking forward to him being the starting pg for the next 5 years...

unless petries plan is to sit on his butt, let all of the older players expire and build through the draft with late lotto picks then he's doing a great job... because blowing mle every year on players that dont deserve it isnt really working.

welcome to kingsfans....

Welcome to the wild wild west or left coast from an old timer who once went to PS #1 in NYC. Far away views are always welcome and add a bit to the rantings of the regulars. Be funny if RonRon ended up in NYC as part of a multi-team trade, eh??? :)

Thanks for the welcome.

I feel the time to move on without GP is coming soon. Its time for fresh ideas and a new era. We got nothing for B-Jax or D.C . Let Hedo, Ronnie Price and Gerald Wallace walk all which could be of great help today.

And when it comes to Drafting GP has admitted that he relies heavily on the scouts when it comes to the draft and FA's so they should get most of the credit when it comes to that. On top of that signed SAR when NJ did not want any part of him after failing a physical not we are stuck with him.

B-Jax, D.C., and Hedo made sense at the time. I'm miffed that we lost Wallace, and I was a big fan of Hedo's, but considering who we had at the time, it made sense as to why they had to go. Petrie was putting all his eggs in one basket, and the Kings came pretty close to a championship.

As for relying on your scouts, I think that's a good thing, considering how the team has drafted these past couple of years (sans Douby - I'm not sold on him.)

SAR...yeah, that one stings. Still, he's a character guy, which I guess is a good thing.

In any case, I'm hoping for one more move (Artest.) If Miller is moved, I'm assuming it will be at the trade deadline. If not, he'll probably finish his contract in Sac.
