How Could We Possibly Get Burkle?

Kingster

Hall of Famer
Any hope for the NBA stepping in because of the ineptness of the Maloofs? Their financial destitution? I'm just wondering if we do get an arena, would that increase the chances of the Maloofs selling? Decrease it? This thing is a mess and it looks like the Maloofs are the primary culprits. How do we get these guys GONE?

One word answer: Sterling.

The answer is easy. Support the new arena with your voice. Once the Kings are committed to the town, then the all the natural course of events that are supposed to happen will happen.
Just a guess on my part, but the Maloofs aren't really the main driver behind the wheel. The NBA is sort of got their hands in there because they realized the Maloofs intended move was a back door attempt to sell controlling interest to Samueli. An by sell, I mean taking cash loans from Samueli out under the umbrella of move expenses and having heavy default penalties that were likely to happen within a few years.

The problem is that the NBA may actually have a more legit claim to be in line to become majority owners of the team because the Maloofs used up at least 75 million in a line of credit over the years from the NBA and some say it was much more. Now remember the Maloofs only own a majority of the team. So if the franchise value today is about 290 million. Then the Maloofs approx. 53% majority ownership is worth about 154 million. The minority ownership money is not really in play because the line of credits were all done against the Maloof shares. So the NBA could own as little as half the Maloof shares and probably more.

So if you are David Stern and you are NBA business side, it's more than a little alarming that your team owners are getting fronted another huge amount of money from Samueli to move the team. It doesn't change the debt on the line of credit, but it does sort of back door the whole potential ownership candidate process. The Maloof boys shouted loudly they would never sell the team. Which is something that is common with people twisting the truth.

Then you have the whole investigation headed up by Clay into Sacramento and Anaheim. The result was the NBA halting the move and sending their top generals into Sacramento. Lost in all the talk about Sacramento being able to prove it wasn't as dead an NBA town as the Maloof boys claimed. But there were quiet but big concerns on the Anaheim side of the deal. It wasn't just the right thing to do for our city, there was some really huge concerns on how the NBA business side coming from Anaheim. Deal killing concerns. Along with that, there is the concern about Sacramento performing when it comes to building a new facility. So the NBA went the route of holding and propping up their investment to see if the town comes through.

So to sum it up, the Maloof boys are likely toast one way or another over the next few years. So build the new arena and the franchise will direction will take care of itself soon enough. It's not going to change right now and the fans should be happy that we have a team to be patient about.

PS Would then the NBA ownership interest + minority stockholders interest = majority share ownership interest?

PS From what I can tell from your post, it's plausible that if the NBA combined their shares with minority stockholders they would actually have the the majority share ownership position. Right?

Thanks for the info. I wonder how the Clipps fit into this picture. So Cal used to be a one-team (lakers) market and "whatever". Now you actually have two legit teams down there. Having grown up in So. Cal, I appreciate how status fits into the picture on all of their teams. The Kings have about the lowest status possible in the NBA. It's difficult for me to imagine a cable network paying money to show Kings games down there. Who down there would even admit to watching them?

What are the chances of the Kings getting an arena deal hammered out at this point and staying in Sacramento?

The answer is easy. Support the new arena any way you can.

Once the Kings are committed to the town, refuse to buy and tickets or buy anything from the Kings until the Maloofs sell the team. Let the local media and fans know what you are doing and why are you doing it.

If the fans really made a push, with their pockets, they are gone in 18-24 months.

They couldn't get a TV deal with the local RSN networks. So they had one lined up with a small TV station owned by guess who? Yep Samueli.

Oh, Comcast is reporting ratings are up on Kings games.

Hire some underage hookers to seduce Joe and Gavin. Arrange it so they get caught. It turns into a huge scandal. Maloofs are shamed and disgraced into selling the team. Burkle comes in for the rescue. Hey, it's as good a plan as any.

Rating are up. But the Kings averaged 22,000 households for the entire Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto area last season!?! Good God. If that's the average, how many people do you think watched a Tuesday home game against the Bobcats?

Well, the ratings system is a total joke to start with. This doesn't include people going to bars etc to watch the game. It only measures people who watch the commercials during the game, IE don't pause and FF or flip the channel.

We should take a cue from EPL soccer fans, and start hanging banners during games saying "We Want New Owners!".

If someone has a better way to make a statement, I'm all ears, but this has been effective in many venues around the world, so don't come up with something like writing letters or sending emails which the Maloofs will never read.

The Kings would be the third team in So Cal and a distant 3rd. The Clippers are the talk of So Cal (I don't have to explain why) and these guys just may win the Pacific. Who would have thought this a couple of years ago? That team has resurrected from the dead. Anyways, I would be surprised if the Maloofs still want to move down here (a bad team moving into a market with one storied franchise and other team on the rise and turning heads). My take is they stay in Sacramento even without a new arena for at least a couple more seasons and then move somewhere else OTHER than Anaheim or the brothers Maloof sell it and the team stays in Sacramento and the new owners address the arena issues or move the team entirely.

We had a manager we didn't like at Bolton there were protests before games, chants throughout games, signs, booing at half and full time and he got untold abuse from the terraces.

now i don't condone abusing people but trust me it broke the camels back eventually and he had to go.

When the atmosphere in the stands gets to a certain level, a change becomes a necessity. Generally over here, the fans get what they want, because who wants to play in a stadium where the fans and players are getting abuse.

Excellent summary. I agree with pretty much everything you said there.

he can pay some guys who will though.

Possibly, but this is still Sacramento. An owner flush with cash might give Geoff more freedom to take on salary in trades, but the reasons NBA player's won't sign in Sacto isn't about money. Its about a bunch of young dips flush with cash they are itching to blow on supermodels, hot dance clubs, and mansions with their own docks on the bay.

I think fans are jsut flailing now trying to find magic answers to a complex problem.

I remember that, since I somewhat follow Bolton. Has happened other places as well. Blackburn supporters have tried doing the same with Keane this year.

Is it fair? No. But neither is making promises to your fan base, and not following through. If there was another avenue, I'd say pursue it, but there isn't here. The owners just hide. We're the ones buying the tickets, and partly paying a huge chunk of our players salaries. We are customers. Customers have a right to complain if they don't get their moneys worth, or are unsatisfied with the product, especially when they were promised it would be better.

I think sometimes people forget a sports organization is a partnership between ownership and the fanbase. Without the fanbase, your organization means nothing.

1) signs would be taken down.

2) Sacramento fans are freakin; insane if they are planning a "revolt" at this time. You will lose your team. The league will take it from you and you won't even be able to claim you didn't deserve it. Your power is in your support of the team. Once you remove that and turn the entire environemnt cancerous for the team, fans, players etc., the league will wash its hands of you. Sacramento is not New York. The league would like to play there, but it doens't need you.

I don't think a revolt is possible, or plausible. I also don't think a banner or two would lead to a toxic situation for all involved either. And yes the banners would probably be taken down, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't mind seeing them go up in the first place.

Uh, how about we say build the arena and every other city can go to... you get the point. It's right there and can be done and there are people working harder than ever to do just that.

Too many fans aren't looking at the big picture. The team wins one game and they are sky high, and then they lose a few and then go on suicide watch. One thing at a time. First do what you can to support the people who are doing the heavy lifting. The arena has a pretty good chance this time. Then once we know there is some life beyond this season, things will fall into place. Nothing else matters than the fight to get this thing built. The rest is just scenery.

Honestly, the fight is out of our hands at this point. Not that it was ever in our hands to begin with, but we're passed the point where the fans and Here We Stay, Here we Build, etc. can make any difference.

We’re also passed the point where attendance makes any difference.

The arena process is well underway and at this point it either fails or succeeds based on the powers that be.

Things I want us to go after... cause owner and FO needs to change badly

1. ARENA - its moving from what I have read its gaining grounds right?

2. BURKLE - if number 1 comes true Burkle is a possibility also if the maloofs continue to go on financial deficit going cheap, I really think stern steps in

3. New GM - been a petrie supporter all my kings life but maybe its time to change? like pritchard? guy moves more in draft night and assembled a potential blazers team (injuries screwed his plans though oden?)

4. Get phoenix suns' medical/training staff - they have done wonders for grant hill and nash nuff said :p

It's funny that the arena isn't really worth one's time because it's all out of their hands. And yet how many threads and posts is it worth discussing what is wrong with the team on the court and/or front office? Isn't that really out of the fans hands too?

The answer of course is that if it's an important enough matter to a person, then it's important enough to be heard here on this forum or someplace else. Might be deaf ears or might just listen a bit. Never know for sure.

Maybe it's just me, but getting in depth on who should be starting on the team is like arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Knock yourself out and I might even throw in a lounge chair suggestion or two myself. But I sure am going to be beating on the wheelhouse door and shouting "Iceberg up ahead!" until we either miss it or hit it. Just my two cents.
