Hornets to use Peja at SG

quote:
<Scott is penciling in sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic as the team’s starting shooting guard and Desmond Mason as the starting small forward. The Hornets re-signed Rasual Butler, last year’s leading 3-point shooter, and added guards Bobby Jackson and Jannero Pargo as well.

“I think we’re fine at that position with Peja and Rasual,” Scott said of the shooting guard spot. “I’m not looking at that position as being a negative. We’ve got two great shooters. I think our (point guards and shooting guards) are probably going to be one of our strongest positions.”

Here’s why: The above five players all have the versatility to play the shooting guard position.

Stojakovic, at 6-foot-10, can play shooting guard or either forward position. Mason (6-5) and Butler (6-7) can both swing between shooting guard and small forward. And Jackson and Pargo, both 6-1, can be just as effective at shooting guard as they are as the lead guard.

“You got guys that can score, so I think not having a true shooting guard doesn’t matter,” Jackson said. “If you have guys that can play multiple positions, that’s more beneficial for the team. That helps us because we can match up against a lot of people in the league.”>

What do you think of this move? I think it makes alot of sense, especially since Peja is such a poor rebounder.

This was reported back in July by Scott as well.

Well, I'd be surprised if he was to play SG on defense too.. offense? Yeah. Peja can't really guard most SGs. He can stay with most 3s though.

lol opposing sg are going to own him...Id like to see peja guard martin's quickness..ha or Kobe..o man

We have a same problem here. Mike Bibby plays PG and can't guard a chair, Brad Miller - don't even get me started. And kevin Martin can't guard anyone either yet.

Ah, but that's the real beauty of the phrase, pdx. It says he can play either forward position. It doesn't make any judgment about how WELL he could do it.

;)

You obviously didn't focus on him on the defensive side of the ball much or at all then. He was quick and at least solid on defense last season.

Peja will be playing shooting guard but he will be switching positions on defense with Desmon Mason...

What's the point of putting him at SG then?! I too think he's going to get owned defensively if he has to guard 2's but putting Mason at the 2 on defense doesn't make sense either if Peja is the shooting guard.

Let's say for example they are playing the Kings. Peja is officially the SG and Mason is the SF. Why would we, just as an example, put Martin on him and Artest on Mason? Just because Peja is called an SG doesn't mean teams will put their SGs on him on D (obviously), especially if a SG is playing the Small Forward role, right? Do you get what im trying to say?

I just think that by putting Mason at the 3 defies all the purpose of putting Peja at the 2 to create an offensive mismatch because teams can just switch up between them on D with their own SG and SF. I would better understand the move if a normal SF would be at the 3 spot.

Do you understand what im trying to say? cause i have a hard time expressing this thought for some reason.

I don't care what position they claim Peja will be playing. Peja is Peja. His game isn't going to change that much, regardless of what position they're "assigning" to him.

I think they're doing it because with Mason's style and skills, he's more of an SF. He slashes, defends, rebounds, dunks, quickness. Where as Peja is more of an SG in offense, just not on defense. So, he'll go to SF on defense where he can guard/stay with SFs. As there, he is actually an above-average defender.

My grandmother would look solid playing next to Ron Artest. I remember him being abused many times. Pretty much every time he had to guard a good ofensive player - he was in foul trouble or scored on. Sure - he is solid compared to what else we have other than Ron. On his position - he is an average at best. Ron Artest had to guard more SGs that PFs. Kevin is somwhere between Bibby and Christie. Not terrinle but not nearly as good as advertised.

That's simply not true, piksi. While he was still getting his feet wet, so to speak, he may not have shone on defense, but who does? He learned as he went, and once Ron appeared on the scene and started to mentor him, there was definitely improvement.

Your comment was "And kevin Martin can't guard anyone either yet." While it might be vintage "piksimism," it's not correct.

"On his position, he's average at best"? Considering the great gaping hole we've had on defense at the 2 since Christie's departure, I think that's a pretty good thing, not worthy of the usual piksi pessimism.

Kevin isn't "advertised" yet. Regardless, he still showed he was solid, fairly consistent and quick on defense last season. I remember one game vs. Seattle where he was having it tough all game long, he came back in the 4th and pestered Ray Allen. Part of us completely shutting down the Sonics in the 4th qtr. He also was put on PGs like Arenas/Nash/Parker and wasn't too bad at all. Kevin is only going to get better on d, along with having added noticeable mass to his body.

Good points, VF.

is that because Martin is so good or is it because Bibby is so bad ?

piksi, that is too funny. Do you realize how big of a range you have there? 50% of the players in the NBA would fall into that range.:D

While Kevin is not near as good a defender as Christie (yet), he is a lot closer to him than Bibby.

Defensively....

Bonzi Wells >>>> Kevin Martin

Well no matter how you use Peja you still end up with problems defensively and sometimes on offense. Peja seems to slow down the offense at times due to running plays to create shots for him. I think Peja needs to add more to his game otherwise he's just a Wally with slightly better shooting.
