Here it comes...

Even if the Kings leave, that wouldn't stop another organization from moving into the area and building something on their own if they decide to privately finance a stadium.
.

And why exactly would any organization want to privately finance a stadium/arena when there are better markets out there that would provide them one free of cost?

JB - I saw Sullivan on the noon news mid-week. He said he hadn't made up his mind completely about the measure, but that he did feel it was probably the best deal we were going to get that stood a chance of passing.

He did hint about the quality of life in Sacramento being a possible deciding factor.

I'm glad to see him on board, even with reservations. I think a lot of people have some reservations but they've done the assessment in their minds and are more for it than against it. And that's the key point.

That's the fairy tale that needs to be totally and completely debunked. IF the NBA allows the Kings to move from here because the voters don't approve the current measure, they aren't going to be in a hurry to put another one in here. And they definitely won't put a franchise here without ADEQUATE facilities in place or in progress. No other professional sports will come here, either.

The people who say "that wouldn't stop another organization from moving into the area and building something on their own if they decide to privately finance a stadium..." need to realize the chances of that are close to none.

•I might win the lottery tomorrow.

•I might get hit by lightning.

•I might see another major professional sports franchise in Sacramento in the foreseeable future if the Kings leave.

The odds of the first two are actually better than the third.

Kind of nice to hear that Tom Sullivan bit. Thanks for that.

I agree it would be a looong time before Sacramento got an NBA team if the Kings leave. My guess is most NBA Kings fans would become Warriors fans and they'd be talking Warriors right along with the Raiders, 49ers, Giants and A's on KHTK.

If I ever quit being a Kings fan, I would return to being a fan of the team that I first followed in the NBA - the Celtics. (That way the hatred of LA could continue unabated.)

;)

INDEED!:D I'd be a fan of EVERY team playing those idiots...that would be my only allegiance, if the Kings left.

I'm guilty of starting the derailing...

Mea culpa.

I think it's important that we stay on track as much as possible in these threads. And I think it's a big step forward for the ballot measure if Tom Sullivan is saying he supports, even if he qualifies that support with "barely a good enough deal."

Thanks, JB, for passing along that bit of info here. I would like to hear it again on a podcast since my mind WAS on the job I had at hand and not really on what I think I heard early this morning, on a background noise radio broadcast as we were driving to the 911 call. I have no idea who he was talking to, nor the context, but I am pretty sure I clearly heard him say that part about it being a "barely acceptable deal" which is far different from what I heard him say not too long ago (adamently against public financing of arena) and I know he mentioned the part about feeling the old arena would be history as better developments took it's place. Someone clearly has been working on Tom -- maybe he has already invested in whatever company he feels will be building the new arena. :)

Sullivan has a huge audience of which most are probably going to be against this measure. Sullivan's opinion carries more weight than anything Grant Napear could ever share.

Actually not so true, in the poll last year by Sac State... Republicans were more willing to vote for an arena deal then Democrats. The 2006 poll was about even...The only reason I seperate the sides is because conservatives are Sullivans audience. Seeing as the right wing is more about / for business these numbers do not surprise me.

This is also why I suspect in part they added the carrot for the cities to get 500+ mil out of it. Good strategy to try and change / persuade some of that democrat side vote to help pay or "say they will" pay for all their social services. Although then you risk alienating the other side as most of us on the right have zero trust in govt. I am just chalking this extra money up as a loss. I have no faith it will be used responsibly.

This poll was published may '06. I would like to see them take the same questions and see if anything has changed now. I hope they do this before the election. I think this is one of the best/most comprehensive and fair polls I have seen in a long time.

Not to derail the topic - One note on that poll,

Its not the for and against they should and better be targeting. If this has any chance they need to target the 21% non-kings fans that don't know. This is why the Bee's articles and obvious opposition are so damaging to this measure.

I am up here, have no vote, and can only talk to sacramentans (?) when they are up on vacation. But the ones that I have talked to are all for the measure. At this point I feel positive. These LA threats really should rally the outside fanbase simply because of the SoCal/NoCal (dare I say) rivalry. There is, IMO, enough civic pride in Sactown to oppose LA getting ANOTHER pro team especially from us. The "Grassroots" campaign has not even hit the ground yet. Keep up the passionate work and this can really happen!!!

If they do leave, I will still be a fan UNLESS they go to LA. Miami has been my 2nd fav team for a couple of years now (sorry But I still had some fun after Kings got ousted), but no real loyalty and I am not partial to FLA. So I will search. Not Warriors for sure!
New Orleans?????

BW, I'm familiar with Sullivan's political leanings, but he also has a big non-sports fan audience. With this measure likely to go either way, it's important to reach his audience. 1530 has a longtime legacy of loyal listeners in the age group where this measure is finding a tough audience. It's almost better that he barely supports this because I think people will identify with being a reluctant supporter. At this point, I don't care if they are 100 % behind this - 51% is good enough for me.

Ya I hear that. I also would assume that a lot of his audience are not Kings fans... So that helps did into that 21% that are undecided non kings fans.

We would need about 5-10% of them to support it and I think this would pass. That is, if I am looking at that May poll right

That May poll may not be a bellweather of anything at this point.

Why?

Because the public contribution for any individual has been (and will continue to be) shown to be so very small. At the time of the poll, and when they asked the private vs public vs public-private financing opinion question, the public part was completely uncertain.

As you said, SAC State needs to do a new poll now to establish a true baseline on where things stand. I'm sure they will.

I would still be a Kings fan if they moved although I dont even want to think of that possibly happening. I have lived in Sac all my life and am 27 years old and have been a fan since I was 6 years old in 1985 and have had season tickets for the last seven years so I hope the team I grew up watching doesn't leave. I have a vote and will be voting yes.
