Hedo to opt for Free Agency

Orlando Magic sharpshooter Hedo Turkoglu's next shot will be at free agency.

Lon Babby, the agent for Turkoglu, told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that his client will opt out of his contract and become a free agent in two weeks.

"It would make sense for him to opt out," Babby told the newspaper by phone. "I can't imagine a scenario in which he would not."

June 30 is the first day players can declare for free agency. In Turkoglu's case, it wouldn't matter if the Magic choose to re-sign the 6-foot-10 forward.

Turkoglu will be entering the final year of a $36 million, six-year contract. He is scheduled to make $7.3 million next season under terms of that deal.

Should we make a run at him? And if so, how much do we throw at him?

Hedo is a good player. But I don’t think he fits with what we are doing with our team. He will command at least $10/yr. At his age, this is his last long term big $ contract. We don’t know how long he can play at his current level. The only way its worth it is if we get PG that is ready on day 1 of the season then we can compete for a playoff spot. Otherwise, we are just wasting our money and Hedo’s good yrs on a lottery team for 1 to 2 more yrs before we can contend on a high level.

I'm really happy for Hedo. I've always liked him and am glad he found his game. I just can't see him wanting to come to a re-building team, with questions about how soon they might be in the playoffs again. Some contending team will want him and pay him.

I still think the only way that makes sense to go after Hedo is a sign and trade where we send Nocioni to Orlando for Hedo. If Orlando can't give him the 9-10 starting salary, they concede and take Nocioni who has a much more cap friendly and shorter contract and plays the same position. He would be solid on a contender like Orlando for the next two years. Since we are under the cap this summer we can easily absorb the 2-3M difference between Nocioni and Hedo's contract which helps Orlando

So...to sign Hedo for 10M I would say no (and wouldn't even be possible without some creative trading)

to trade Hedo for Nocioni and pay the 2-3M difference I would say yes.

Here's a blip from a Sheridan article that almost echoes your idea..

Possibilities include such teams as Sacramento (where Turkoglu began his NBA career), which could acquire Turkoglu via a three-team sign-and-trade that would be brokered by Memphis or Oklahoma City, two teams with an abundance of cap space. The Grizzlies and Thunder themselves are not expected to be interested in Turkoglu, given that they have his position filled and are undertaking youth movements.

I would actually love to send Noc for Hedo. However, I don't think we are the ideal fit in Hedo's mind right now.

Not sure. He IS on a contending team and will be opting out to get a bigger contract. The contending teams (Cleveland, Orlando, Boston, Lakers) are all in tax territory already so it's hard to imagine him going any of those places. If he wants to get paid the big $$ he's unlikely to go to a contender. If he wants to be on a contender, he should stay in Orlando and take less $$

Otis Smith said somewhere he would pay the tax to keep that team together. Hedo is probably looking to get overpaid anyway.

Here's a idea.

lets first trade for bibby bjax brad miller n peja.
sign hedo and pollard.
get christie webber and vlade out of retierment.

NOW lets have a team

Am i right?

No. There's nothing he does that Garcia or Noc can't do. He also wants big money before they restructure the CBA and salary cap. This team is already full of swingmen and what they need is a legit point guard, not another swingman who can masquerade at point sometimes.

Personally, seeing Hedo run the floor brought back memories. But then I realized how much older he is, and in the end how bad of a move it'd be. Hell, I'd like to bottle our team up from the glory days and inject our current squad. Deal is, it's over and done.

Waste of money, waste of space. It goes against all of the rebuilding moves.

I still have an interest -- we could use a versatile winner with ties to the past. But it would cost (in fact its very hard to see how he would trade in a major contender for a laughingstock), and I think only makes sense if we make some major moves this summer. If we bring in a star player and try to win now, then Hedo would be a great FA pickup as a support guy. If we go all young, then there really is no need for him.

Why is that bad news? He's not a player who is going to elevate the Kings. He's a nice second or third option guy who can do a lot of little things for a team that needs it, like the Magic. He's similar to Toni Kukoc in that respect.

It was a figure of speech, meant for those who seemed to feel we were one Hedo away from a return to glory...

Good for Orlando. When you have a window you do what is needed to give yourselves chances.

They'll be hurting in a couple of years though when Hedo and Lewis are in major decline at 32-33 and costing the team HALF the cap.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but it appears as though the Magic are willing to pay the luxury tax to keep Hedo:

Might not be a fashionable choice, but we should consider trading for Anthony Johnson, and get a pick or two from the Magic for saving them some cash.

Unless we indulge in some 2 for 1 type of deals, we shall have 11 players after picking our 3 draft picks. We can certainly consider signing some of our young guys (Ike, McCants) to fill up our roster, or some cheap, young upcoming player (Fesenenko).

The case for AJ though is that he is an expiring contract on a team that has two PGs expecting heavy minutes. Plus, with Hedo often playing PG, they don't have any time for AJ. He is a pure PG, who can be a mentor to the young guys we hope to draft this year.

Of course, if Bobby is interested in that role, he should be signed instead. Else, we can pick AJ and get some picks (late ones though) in the process.
