Heatwave?

Okay, so maybe I do live in the sticks - literally - and might not be the first to hear about new sports teams in Sacramento.

Having said that, what's the deal with the Sacramento Heatwave? And is it true that Kings players might be taking the court for this team?

According to Wikipedia, the team moved here in December 2006 and currently play at West Campus High School (very small school).

An article on the team by the Sacramento Press:

Here is their official web site: http://www.hometeamsonline.com/teams/?u=HEATWAVELIVE&s=basketball&t=c

If no new arena is built, this will be the closest thing to professional basketball that we will have.

I don't have much information. A friend of mine who is active in a business organization throughout Northern California is networked with them - the Sacramento Heatwave. From what I understand, they're having tryouts and will be playing their games at Natomas High School. I haven't seen anything about it on any of the Sacramento news channels but admittedly I don't watch them as closely as the "locals" do. I was hoping someone might have more information. It was my friend who mentioned that it was being rumored that Sacramento Kings players might be signing on to play with the Heatwave during the lockout...

ABA PROVIDES EXEMPTIONS FOR NBA PLAYERS
Dick Packer - 9/15/2011

The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it is providing its teams with exemptions for NBA players who want to play during the NBA lockout. “We’ve had many calls from our teams and NBA players as well as their agents/reps about the use of NBA players during the lockout,” stated Dick Packer, ABA President/COO.

“We definitely welcome having NBA players on our teams. It is a great way for them to stay in shape and to play competitively as well as being able to play in the US. We decided not to include NBA players added to rosters under the salary cap or the 12-man roster limitation. We do not want the exemption to cost any ABA players their positions on their team. This exemption will exist during the NBA lockout only.”

Packer added, “As an example, I received an email from a Player Representative saying,…”…my client, xxxx was drafted in the second round by the xxxxxx in this year’s NBA draft. We are looking at options to keep him playing during the NBA lockout. The ABA represents a very interesting and viable option for some of my clients…I would like to get in touch in regards to possibilities. Thanks.” “I spoke with the rep who has over 40 NBA players and we are going to work together to find teams for the players during the lockout.”

Looking at the ticket prices, the Heatwave just might be a solution to those suffering from severe basketball withdrawals. :)

Honestly, that sounds great. A viable option for many of the young players, not all would have the opportunity to go overseas, or even want to at such a young age. And great for the fans too, shame I don't live in Sacramento.

My feeling is why not? This is a good way for them to polish their skills and work on certain weaknesses the players need to work on. Also, the players remain active during the lockout and stay in shape in case the strike ends and the NBA resumes.

Geez, Gary. Who cares what the website looks like? I for one was just interested in finding out about a team that's apparently been around for several years and is now getting a chance for a little love from bball fans. If at all possible, I might even be interested in getting a group of us Kings fans to go to show the love. It's about the game, dude. :)

Yah I know, but if they want to be professional then they need to hire someone that knows something other than basic HTML. It's like you got this neat idea then spend 5 minutes on advertising it. Kind of like having a high end store in a building that's falling apart. Most of the time you get only a few seconds to "wow" someone before they move on, and the impression I got from the site is that the people either don't really know what they are doing or they don't care.

It's like those supermarket tabloids. They did research and came to the conclusion that people will buy or not buy the tabloid based on the top half of the front page. So they try to put the most outlandish things on that top half of the front page.

For those interested in more information, here's the email I received from my friend:

The Sacramento Heatwave began in 2003 as the Fresno Heat, founded by
Albert Ellis. Eight years, two name changes, and one location change
later, you now have the team you will get to know and love: the Sacramento
Heatwave. Under the leadership of head coach, Reggie Davis, who owns the
Heatwave since 2004, the Heatwave has made it to the division playoffs the
last two years.

The Heatwave's newly released schedule has them opening at home on
Saturday, November 12th hosting the Richmond Rockets in a Pacific North
Division battle. The second game of a weekend doubleheader opener pits the
Heatwave against one of their biggest rivals and last season's Pacific
North Division Champs, the Bay Area Matrix.

Tickets to the games are made extremely affordable for the greater
Sacramento community to enjoy seeing a new local team:

a.. General Admission: $10
b.. Kids Admission: $5
c.. Courtside: $25
d.. Season Ticket: $120
Fifteen (15) games at home this season, that means 15 chances to help
prove that Sacramento means business when it comes to its sports teams.
It is also 15 chances for Sacramento’s small business owners to show it
means business by supporting the Heatwave team via sponsorship and game
attendance!

Get ready for Opening Day and take advantage of this very special
relationship. Simply start here to purchase your tickets:

Okay, one more shout out for the guys taking the court and playing the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see a familiar face or two in the audience for the opener Saturday night. I wish I could be there. I have a feeling these guys will put on quite a show and you sure can't beat the ticket price. Seems like a great way to take the family to a bball game without having to mortgage your house or sell a kidney. ;)
