Head coach & GM options

After listening to CBK podcast, specifically segmant with Mark Mastrov I am certain that we already have lined up our front office and coaching department. Mark said that we have been working very hard on it for a while and will start putting things into action as soon as the ownership becomes official. He said expect a lot of exciting things to start happening pretty quickly over the next 2 weeks.

This led me to believe that we already know who the GM will be and who the head coach will be and it will be announced pretty quickly after the NBA rubber stamps the transfer of ownership

Got a link for me on that podcast homie? Would love to hear.

I understand your point, where I think we disagree most is with Thomas. I think we'd have the same lack of PG ability with Thomas as we would with Douglas. Neither guy is a great point guard, which is why having a hybrid SG like Evans is important.

The problem with Thomas is that he doesn't pass. And I know that's a little harsh, but that's my point. Douglas will get out of the way. When Thomas is on the court you can't help but notice him because he always has the ball.

As far as Beno goes - Padrino said it best. I love everything he does on offense. Perfect role playing guard for both Evans and Thornton. He's very good off the ball, not only because of his jumper, but he's a good cutter.

Of couse you want him to be better defensively, but then he's going to cost you 6 million instead of 4, or whatever his price will be. I want him in a bench role where the defense doesn't matter and you have Douglas there incase he's getting torched.
Wait... u guys want Beno to return? eek. No thanks

Let's move forward. I liked him when he was here, but we don't need too many more reminders of that era lol I'm just fine with Evans and Cousins. I understand your point about his offensive ability, but I'm sure we can find someone just as adequate/serviceable, and hopefully someone that CAN play a bit of defense. I don't want any more horrible defenders on this team, putting pressure on the few guys we do have, that can defend.

I haven't had a chance to listen Mastrov yet, but if a new front office and coaching staff is already lined up... I think this points to Malone again. An easy connection to make because he'd be such an easy person for Vivek to be in constant contact with.

The impression I got from that segmant was that we have done a lot of work already and we are going to make some moves im the next couple of weeks. I could be reading the situation completely wrong.

I think you might be right about Malone and I also get the feeling that Travis Schlenk might be our GM. Apparently he is an analytical guy and is the main guy at GSW in terms of scouting. He is currently assistant GM at GSW!

I'm not so sure. Wouldn't it be tampering for Vivek to even speak to people who are under contract to another team? Could Vivek even ask for permission to talk to personnel yet, since they have not been confirmed.

If Vivek has already decided on a GM, it has to be someone currently not working for another team or they assume that these people would take the job. But I don't think they can talk to Malone and the GW assistant GM yet.

Technically Vivek has access to anyone on Warriors payroll. Until the sale is confirmed, there's nothing to prevent him from speaking to anyone in hypotheticals.

From everybody's favorite, Scoop Bucher:

Warriors owner Joe Lacob used what he learned as a Celtics' minority partner to shape his new team. Vivek Ranadive,
former Warriors minority owner and now presumptive Kings primary owner, apparently is doing the same, beginning with putting Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone on his list of candidates to be the Kings' next head coach, a source said. about 9 hours ago

Petrie recalled from the Jersey workouts back to Cali. Sign of change? Also, don't like that Thomas and reke are painting Smart in a good light, but I looking at it from a diff perspective, they aren't guys would publicly bash him.

They talked about how he has helped them. There is no question he can coach the fundamentals of basketball. He is a great assistant coach, but a terrible head coach.

Love it. Someone finally let Bucher in on what everyone else has been talking about for a week? Yeah, he's right on top of things.

If I'm Isaiah Thomas I have every reason to be very very happy with Keith Smart. Heck, I owe it to him that I'm going to have at least another 2-3 years in the league. Tyreke, not so much.

Considering who wrote article, I don't think we can read much into it.

Tyreke Evans said he benefited from Smart playing him at small forward and eventually moving him to shooting guard.

When you have a statement like that, and yet don't use a direct quote to back it up, it makes me wonder...

Also, I do agree with Fear the Putin that neither Evans or Thomas would publicly bash Coach Smart.

I can only hope that when Vivek and Co. take charge, the Bee also finds a way to replace Jason Jones with a real sports reporter who actually cares about Sacramento.

I'm not a fan of IT but some of you guys act like he's a D league player or something. The guy is a legit NBA talent. I'm not saying he's a starter on a playoff team or anything but he could come off the bench as a spark plug for a number of teams. He's going to be in the league for a long time.

I think one of the main things we need now is a BENCH MOB like we had with Barry, Maxwell, etc!! And IT would be a great bench mob captain if he could get his head around the role. He's got the charisma and swagger, and in the right system surrounded by the right guys, I think he could beat up on the second unit from other teams.

I love him but I don't think he's the starting PG on a playoff team.

I agree with you, 100%. The fact is, if we want to have IT on the bench, as our 6th man, we need to trade Thornton. We need a defensive SG to pair with him. IT and MT together won't work.

I want a proven TEACHER. A veteran, for this team first, then we can have his younger coach step up and continue the philosophy and style (with his own little twist) that has been preached for 2 to 3 years. After those 2 to 3 years, it won't really matter as much, because they will already have that mentality needed to not only get into the playoffs, but make a significant amount of noise as well.

And i wont be as nervous when that young coach comes in, but right now? I feel the way Brick does. Uneasy.

If Vivek likes to think outside the box, Kenny Smith would be a good candidate for GM.

He has been lobbying for a front office position and I think he is one of the brightest minds on NBA TV.

He watches all the games and teams and has a connection to the Kings from his early playing days.

He would definitely bring some name recognition to the Kings.

A name for coach would be Brian Shaw, he has been successful in all his stops with the Lakers and Pacers. He is a bright young mind and is a California native. He has both exposure to traditional offenses (Indiana) and the Triangle (Lakers).
He needs to be in someones front office for a good period of time, before just leaping up into the highest rank possible. No thanks. Steve kerr in Phoenix, was a disaster waiting to happen, and, well, it did. I'm thinking Kenny smith without any prior experience in some kind of way, will be a similar disaster.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that Keith Smart gave him the opportunity to play and even allowed him to be somewhat of the focus of the offense. As a result he's now somewhat known around the league and will at very least get one decent contract after his rookie one. Statistically speaking what are the odds of a second round pick, let alone a 60th pick having a significant role in his rookie season? And remember, many of us feel that this was at the expense of the development of the team. If not for Smart IT may well be a 10mpg backup player or not have a chance at all. That doesn't take anything away from IT's ability. The same could very easily be said for Jeremy Lin. Loads of players simply need an opportunity to shine. Wise or not it was Keith Smart who gave IT that opportunity.

looking more and more like we will end up with Mike Malone. obviously i dont know much about the guy, but im hearing great things about him around the league. including that quote i posted from a guy i know who works with the Warriors, and also the fact that apparently Chris Paul is lobbying the Clippers to try to pick up Malone because he really liked him in New Orleans

Well, looking at his resume, he looks like Thibs 2.0. Seems like Malone is the mastermind behind Cavs defense, before LeBron left (#4 in Drtg in 06/07 and 08/09, #5 in 09/10) and GSW defense turnaround this season. Actually on the season overall Warriors were only middle of the pack team, but they were #26 in 10/11 and #27 in 11/12.
Obviously main concern is not how Kings' chuckers would feel about a guy who wants defense first and probably second too, but rather how will he cope with Boogie. This is the question none knows the answer to. Dinner with Boogie would be the first thing to do if Malone is appointed.

I know it is unrealistic of me but I would put the onus on Cousins - how can he get along with Malone or any other new coach. If he couldn't, I'd join the crowd wanting to get rid of Cousins. If he is named, Cousins might want to take him out to dinner.

Cousins repeated multiple times, that winning is the most important thing for him. Known successful coaches have one advantage over Malone - they had success already, so they've been there, where Boogie so strives to get, and that would get his attention. Sure he might start thinking that his new coach is an idiot after taking a closer look at him (like say Mike Brown who got to Finals), but there would be some semblance of respect at first. Smart is actually pretty good assistant but turned to be worthless HC. Malone has one thing over Smart though: while Keith might be good at player development, Malone is good at setting up defensive system, which is a major part of HC responsibilities. MM will probably need offensive assistant.
Malone is still unproven and this team will go as far as Boogie takes it, so MM will have to adjust to Cuz.

Cousins will get long with a coach he respects. He will get along with a coach that will take the time to explain to him the "why" of anything he is told to do. Frankly, I would be like Cuz as if I know the "why" I can execute better. If Malone fits those qualifications, we are in great shape. If he isn't, we will either get a half effort and a troubled effort at that or we should trade Cuz and get the best we can. I still don't know Malone as much as people have said he is great. With this team is is "great at what?" Mussleman was great at Powerpoint, Smart is great at a gift of gab, Theus looked good in a suit, and Westy was living off an undeserved reputation built off of coaching teams that had great players.

As I think Cuz is super important to this team, I'd like to know how Malone would handle him. Does anyone know?

Edit: Gilles, sorry I didn't read your note before typing away but we seem to be close in out attitudes.
