Greg Oden?

The article is so short that it feels weird to try to summarize it (aside from what VF posted from the first paragraph):

- Atl, Dal, Mia, NOLA, Sac and SA interested
- Intrigued the most by Mia and NOLA
- NOLA might be willing to give 2 years guaranteed, but Mia can offer more money than NOLA this year
- Oden looking for best offer and no-pressure situation for comeback

We can't really offer him that. We kind of need his skillset in the starting five next to Cousins. Might be best for him to sign with the Pelicans.

Trying to look at this from Oden's point of view, the one advantage we might have over teams like Atlanta and New Orleans is that we already have a young, offensively dominant big man in place.

Atlanta has Horford and New Orleans has Davis and both of those guys are more well-known for their defense and rebounding than their offense. Atlanta also just signed Millsap and drafted two 7 footers, one of whom opted to return to Spain rather than fight for minutes this season so that's a bit of a cloudy future there minutes-wise.

New Orleans looks like a well-balanced roster with a chance to win right away. That's certainly an appealing situation. I'd probably pick them too, but you do have to be thinking in the back of your mind somewhere that Oden/Davis isn't exactly a match made in heaven. They could be a dominating defensive front line or they could get in each other's way going for blocks and rebounds. They also project to have the vast majority of their offense coming from the back court until they find a consistent post scorer. Maybe not so well balanced after all.

Sacramento is still a long way from being competitive, but it's a low pressure situation right now with a great complimentary big man. If it does work out, that duo alone is going to make Sacramento an annual playoff team if you can keep them together. I don't think you could say that about any other team under consideration right now. The Spurs are going to be rebuilding when Duncan retires, same with Dallas and Dirk, and Miami can't afford to keep Oden anyway if he earns himself a real contract in the future. The again, would he even be thinking beyond this season right now?

I'd take Oden without a second thought at the prices he's looking at. But the Kings have relatively no pull for him. There are far better situations out there for him, including the Heat.

Interesting, nice breakdown.

There are reports that championship contenders like Miami and San Antonio wouldn't be the best for him given the spotlight and amount of pressure to perform on those teams

Spotlight is removed by it all being on LeBron and Wade, instead of him playing for a team where his name would be the most recognizable. Plus, he'll get as much playing time as he wants (whether that be less or more) and it will allow him to get a ton of easy looks. Additionally, he'll get far more recognition for playing well if he does so with the Heat as opposed to the Pelicans. Smart move for him is the Heat for a basketball future. But I guess you're right, who knows if he is mentally tough enough. With an alcohol/depression problem he might not be.

I must have missed this part. Where did you see that?

"If you know anything about guys in the Air Force," Greg explained, "it's that they drink a ton. My cousin got wrapped up in the NBA lifestyle and threw parties at my house all the time. So I got wrapped up in it too. When I played well, I'd drink to celebrate. And when I played poorly, I'd drink to forget. That second year in Portland I pretty much became an alcoholic."1

*Edit* Looks like I was beat to it.

Thank you. I'd never seen that article.

No problem! It's definitely worth a read. It changed my opinion about Oden in a lot of ways. Whenever I start to think sports are a ridiculous waste of time, I come across something like this that puts it in perspective. Athletes are all human beings with their own stories and I root for them to succeed as much as I root for my teams to win.

Greg Oden to decide on team tomorrow, reports Yahoo! A source tells me he's torn between Miami and New Orleans.

Oden has been considering the Heat, Pelicans, Spurs, Hawks, Mavs, and Kings. Miami and New Orleans are frontrunners, Spurs are third.

Dear Greg:

In Miami, you will come off of the bench, get no credit if the team wins a championship (because they've already got back-to-back titles) and get blamed if the team doesn't win (what's different? Oden!)

In New Orleans, that young pup Anthony Davis is going to steal all your defensive stats.

In Sacramento, you will get to hang at the rim and clean up after all those guys who blow by Cousins. You will be the first #1 overall pick to play for the franchise since some guy named Webber. If you can give 15 minutes a game, block shots and rebound, the crowd will love you like no crowd in the NBA.

How difficult is this decision? ;)

Still not that interested. On top of the health concerns, I think he might be foul prone and not really that smart. Jeff Withey would still have been a better option because he is not foul prone and is a master of positioning.

Haha, you're never going to let this Withey thing go?

Jeff Withey isn't part of the discussion, any more than Monte Ellis is. This is merely about whether or not Greg Oden - again not Jeff Withey or anyone else not named Greg Oden - is worth taking a chance on.

Another small tidbit.

According to NBC Sports, Greg Oden to work out for the Heat, Kings, and Pelicans this week.

Yep! I was thinking the same thing. Strange though, it was just posted. Didn't make any sense to me either, so take it with a grain of salt.

Must have copied and pasted the wrong thing? Either that or he has some really bad sources.

a big meh...

Marc Stein: One FA big man likely to benefit from Greg Oden's expected decision today is Lou Amundson, who has drawn interest from some of same teams. Hearing that Heat, Kings and Mavs (all Oden finalists) as well as Hawks, Knicks and Pacers have registered level of interest in Amundson

a big meh...

Was in our training camp years ago, and yes, passed through Golden State a few years back so = no brainer.

We need anybody who will hustle and try on defense, so its similar to the Sam Young idea, why not? But I'm sorry for the apologists, this whole thing feels absolutely exactly like the Maloofs never left. The league moves, we appear to sit and do nothing and try to pick up bargain basement filler players out of the scrap barrel just to say we are doing something.

Lety's cross our fingers on Oden. At least picking him up would be interesting, if likely ineffectual in the end.
