Grant and Jerry future?

It would be a business decision to change the the broadcasters. In relaunching a struggling brand you have to walk the the fine line between not enough change to bring in new consumers, and so much change you push away your loyal core. While few fans would stop watching games with out G&J, the 'feel" might well become so AstroTurf it would be hard to build on. Tradition matters, and fans like consumers of any long existing label, will have difficulty if the product does not have any historical connection. Imagine Makers mark with out the wax, or Boodles in a round bottle... then you are just down on the second shelf battling away with Johny-com-latelys. If you want new fans to get committed, you show them what is new and you also show them the jerseys in the rafters, the penents and traditions since the team came to Sacramento. Grant and Jerry are part of that tradition. Of course having a new version of House Party as a warm up and 1/2 time relief would also go far in bringing in new fans.

Well put. This is a tough decision. Reynolds has been around since the KC days, but like you said, in relaunching a struggling brand you don't want to lose your core.

I wouldn't mind finding a new, young duo like a Spero Dedes.

And if they even think about getting rid of the G man there will be Hell to pay. He actually is the best in the business.

I know some find him over the top and annoying, but I'd like to see Vivek make a big splash and hire Gus Johnson as the new PBP guy. That dude makes even the most boring games sound fun. Gus has prior NBA experience was let go by CBS a while back. I think he's doing work for Showtime now.

I would actually prefer them to stay as announcers. Not from SAC so radio thing doesn't bother me, but from what you guys are saying the best option to me would be to keep them as announcers and have Grant off the radio. Second option is only keep Jerry as PBP. I say this with faith that our GM and coach will know how to build a team, and Jerry will simply be a fan of whatever they build, so no more IT is John Stockton and shotblocking is bad stuff.

Try the :p smiley. :)

Using a smiley really is a slap in the face of subtle humor. It's like telling a joke, laughing at your own joke, then telling the person you told the joke to you made a joke.

Anyone who thought saying "god you sound old" was meant to be insulting is just...idk, insulting?

Respect.

Grant + Jerry are easily one of the best commentary couple out of any of the NBA league pass people and better than 90% of the big network guys, even if Grant is a dick on his radio show he's very good on the TV and they should keep Jerry unless than plan to replace him with Bill Walton.

Please NO! to Bill Walton. I can handle him in small doses, but couldn't take him for the whole season.

Again, so what? If you dont like his schtick, and that is part of his appeal and why his ratings are No. 1...don't listen if your skin is so thin. I like it. It makes for good radio.

Look, I get it. I understand why some Kingsfans on this board don't like him and why they want him gone. I listen to him all the time. I've heard it all, and enjoyed it for what it was. The conflict between the radio and his game calling is going to be always be there as long as he does both. I happen to believe he is very good at both and am able to separate the two. Shock Jock or NBA play by play man.

Like it or not, Webber is and always has been a bit of a diva. I say that knowing he is my favorite Kings player ever. Webber was completely uninformed of what was happening about the Kings move and did not have the facts straight. Grant was trying to set the record straight and Webber blew up. Webber and he have always had a strained relationship that had been fueled long before this whole thing had flared up. I have met both men and found them both to be likable people. Perhaps my fondness for Grant comes from the fact that I lived in NY for 5 years and get what New Yorkers are all about. They are loud, brash and unapologetic generally but with a certain charm that grows on you over time. As for Cuz, well I will trust that Grant has some pretty valid reasons that we are not privy to that he sees all season long, on flights, in hotels, at restaurants, and in the locker room. We have only seen the tip of the iceberg. I am for signing him to the max because talent like that doesnt just come along every day, especially in Sacramento but, HE HAS SOME ISSUES. Im willing to take the risk. All I would ask is don't to be too defensive of a Kings player when he deserves a little criticism. Are you so sensitive that you cannot handle a few hard truths about our players? Let's face it, Cuz, at this point in his career is a spoiled child that has not learned to control his emotions. I believe, long term, he will. Regardless, just because there may be some criticizing of our players by a sports talk radio host, I wouldn't worry too much that DMC will get his panties all bunched up and walk away in a huff over it.

As far as better Kings coverage out there? There isnt any. Im willing to keep listening Grant along with the great coverage provided.

And I'm from NY too and most of my family is there. I too know what New Yorkers are all about and there's a difference between the typical NY attitude and Grant simply being an *** to Kings fans. And being from NY I had no problem with Grant for years, I've listened to him since 94, however the way he trashed fans while dancing back and forth on the issues to whatever direction the Maloofs pulled changed my opinion on him while shouting down numerous fans. A typical New Yorker can handle disagreement just fine, they tell it as it is. Grant however cowers when approached with an opposing viewpoint, yells, calls names and hangs up. It's a classic defense mechanism meant to not allow opposing viewpoints much, if any, airtime, and the people he takes it out on are the same fans he's been telling everyone are the best in the world the last two months.

I get that some still like him. I get some strongly dislike him and many fall inbetween. But I see no problem with wanting someone in his position acting in a more respectful manner towards fans and our team, and I disagree his inside knowledge validates him coming on air and tearing into a player. Sure he can go off on a player's poor play, but when it goes beyond that you start getting into the grey area, airing dirty laundry which belongs in house. I don't think it's sensitivity at all if you personally are in favor of higher standards. Standards are subjective, but being in favor of a new PBP guy or KHTK radio host, an upgrade, is no different than not being pleased with Jimmer and wanting an upgrade there as well.

I personally can stomach Grant, but preference would be he do either PBP or radio, not both. I don't like having the main and only radio show covering the team being done by someone so close to the team. There's zero objectivity, and the clear evidence is how he talks about the NFL compared to us. He's very point blank about the NFL, even his Giants. No sugarcoating. I'd like some analysis done by someone not working and traveling with the team.

while fishing around for a Spurs/Heat broadcast, I found a much better sports spot on the radio than KHTK. 1320 AM has sports programming without the stupid garbage morning show.

I wonder if Vivek could ditch 1140, and Grant (and Geronimo) with it... and make 1320 AM the home of the Kings, with new announcers.

Finish the housecleaning - complete overhaul.

Count me into the group that thought it was meant to be insulting. That makes me insulting I presume.

Get off my lawn! :shakesfist:

While what you said about the smiley makes sense, it doesn't quite translate as well on the internet. Face to face you tend to know people and you'd be able to tell if they were joking or being snark. On a forum you only get a sense based on reading a person's posts for a long time. A good number of regular posters here have been members of the forum for at least 5 years, and when you read a person's posts every single day for 5 years you kinda get to know their style and "personality". Still, a smiley or something would be helpful in any case.

Yeah. I took it as a bit insulting, too. But I'm old. Perspective does matter. Sometimes smilies are needed, because some humor cannot be detected for sure on a message board. 1) There are no facial expressions, body language or tone of voice or inflections that can be read. Sarcasm is especially hard to get in this format. 2) A lot of people would mean such a statement seriously. There's also enough crazy people out there to say the most ridiculous things seriously. I've also read statements as a joke, only to find out the person was actually serious.

So I wish you young'uns weren't so wet behind the ears. ;)

I don't know why any organization would keep around a broadcast guy who beefs with their own players.

Grant can keep his radio gig where he'd be free to rant about the kings all day.

Grant does a very good job at PBP. He brings a lot of enthusiasm with the game and helps make it more exciting. The problem is he has lost credibility as a radio host forever in my opinion. I won't listen to his show anymore.

It would be nice to have a better sports radio station, a better sports lineup, a host who isn't a bought and paid for shill. And wtf is Geronimo doing on a sports talk station anyway???

Coming from someone who doesnt listen to Grant on 1140 very often I think some people need to look at everything from his perspective. He has worked his entire life to get his DREAM JOB. It's understandable that he did what he felt was needed to keep that job. As someone who aspires to be an NBA PxP guy I know that if/when i get that NBA job I will do what I think I need to to keep it. I don't think Grant had anything against Sacramento and I believe that he dislikes the Maloofs as much as everybody else, but guess what? They are his boss. How many of you have given up your dream job because your boss is an a**hole?

have you listened to the jason ross show? i enjoy listening to his show. he keeps it objective and doesn't bash fans like grant. it's funny that grant will let in all the callers that agree with him on the subject. i remember when he was ripping into one of my favorite kings of all time, bobby years ago. when bobby came on air to speak to him, his tone completely changed. why not just lay it out there instead of doing it on the radio where the player has to hear about it from someone else? now he's doing the same with cousins and its pretty disgusting. i hope he gets taken off the radio show for good.

I hope Grants gets the axe from the PBP position. His verbal crutches are glaring and 'excitement' is hollow. He is a stale piece on TV, with time atrophying his creativity... I'm a 'hater' though, no doubt.

I also agree with everything rainmaker said above, great post.

Jerry is not very insightful, but I do like him. I wouldn't mind either way with him.

I just wish he would choose one or the other. Grant doing both jobs is a conflict and interferes with his ability to be honest as a radio personality. I like him working with Jerry. I like him on the radio when he isn't being a jerk to decent callers and defending the indefensible team stuff -- both of which would likely be reduced if he was no longer doing both jobs. But doing both is just not "right".

Grant must sink with the ship period. Completely brown nosed the magoofs and gave sacra the middle finger. I would love to bring in cm Dave to do the color commentary with a veteran pbp by his side.

I like the Jason Ross show although it is a little to..."nice" for me. Ah la Jim Kozimor. Still, he has a great radio voice and he knows his stuff. As far as the Bjax thing goes, Grant did in fact apologize publicly to Bobby over that incident. If I remember correctly, Grant called out Bobby on whether his injury was real or fabricated.

I'm tellin ya... try 1320AM. Made me forget all about KHTK

I dont have any problem with KHTK's lineup except for the morning. Geronimo is a clown. Get CD back on and put him in that slot then you have:

Carmichael Dave- 6-10
Jim Rome-10-12
Jason Ross- 12-3
Grant Napier- 3-7

If you get rid of Napier put Dave in that slot and give Ross the 6-10 and give Deuce the 12-3

As far as 1320 goes, I sort of like M&M but thier schtick gets old. Otherwise, how much over opinionated know it alls who just like to hear themselves talk can you take? I tired of it quickly. Life is way too short for that.

Gotta keep Grant and Jerry. You won't realize how good they are until they are gone. Actually, I won't really care if Jerry doesn't come back. He gets a little corny - replace him with Pollard.

1140 > 1320. Grant is the man. He gets good guests and keeps a good flow to his show. It's funny when I want to yell at the caller and then Grant does it for me. I like how he covers all sports on the show, but still focuses on the Kings. Another good touch is he gets other play-by-play announcers as guests when the Kings are about to play them.

Succinct.
I agree wholeheartedly.
