Welcome back everyone!

Official Boxscore

Greene ( C+ ) -- not much in the first half, but hit a three and did a good job using his length on Beasely. In the third began to team with DeMarcus and Landry to overpower the Wolves inside. During his best stretch in the early 4th was making some nice passes to set people up, and using that size on teh glass for once. Went up very strong for a monster dunk midway through the quarter, and got met right at the apex by Anthony Toliver who turned the monster dunk into a monster stuff. Lost control of Beasely as the 4th ran on, and eventually gave way to Casspi for the stretch run. Still struggling from the line, including at critical times. Started slow, but not a disastrous outing by the end. Was a stretch there where he made good roleplayer cotnributions, rebounding, setting people up with passes, and defending. But the offense was not there at all, and I have gotten the feeling that Westphal's premature thou shalt be a roleplayer speech early in camp has oppressed our two yougn SFs somehwat, making them afraid to actually do anything for fear of it being wrong.

Landry ( B+ ) -- Strctly speaking assigning Carl Landry as your #1 goto guy is a way to fastrack yourself right to a loss. But tonight he was good, hung tough, and after beginning to fade, worked well with Cousins down the stretch to help seal this one. In the early going had to watch Love bomb threes on him (not really right to blame a PF when that happens) and was suffering from tunnel vision again, ignoring open shooters once he started his moves. Was aggressive and using a lot of moves, right from the beginning, but early results were mixed. A few of boards kind of fell to him, but was still playing physical in there and working around the offensive glass to come up with a lot of balls. Got teamed with Darnell Jackson in the mid second, and that was a mini-frontline which did not work at all and hopefully wont' be seen again. Was struggling to stay stable on his FTs as well. On the other hand when the starting trio came out after half (Donte, Landry and Cousins), they worked well together and began to dominate the interior. Began to settle for jumpers in the 4th when Love backed off him and gave him that shot, wasn't hitting them though, making the Love strategy the right one. Got a second wind when DeMarcus returned late and began to set Carl up with passes on the inside, and ended up scoring 9 of his 22 in the last quarter. Not a dominant performance, but a productive one, and notably defied his biggest weakness by grabbing 11 (mostly offensive hustle) rebounds on the night.

Cousins ( B+ ) -- well after those last few sloppy preseaon games, you weren't quite sure how Boogie was going to come out for this one, but I am happy to say that he remains the same big sloppy but oh so talented big man we have seen flashes of all along. And when it came time ot win this one he stepped forward and was as instrumental as anyone in us pulling it off. As always it was an adventure. Looked nice and mature on his first offensive move, taking his time and drawing a foul. Then turned around and wiped that impression away making his first NBA shot a three point chuck that barely drew backboard. Was in fact settling a bit too much for jumpers early. Did well when matched on Love in the 2nd qiuarter, both defending him in the post and blocking him out for boards. Followed up a nice follow dunk on a scramble play with another one of his stupid trying to draw a charge things, giving Johnson a 3pt play. Began to pick up the agressivenes inside in the 3rd quarter. Got doubled in the early third and hit a tough tough fallaway jumper from 16ft over two guys Then drew a charge on Love that put him on the bench -- I think it weas the only time it worked all night, but it was helpful that time.. Again picked up his 5th foul trying to draw a charge -- so many of the foul problmes are self inflicted for him, with at elast 2, and I thinnk maybe even 3 of his 5 fouls being dumb attempts to draw charges rather than stick those long arms in the air and try to disrupt the shots. But rather than wilt in the face of the potential foul out, picked his game up and carried us through a critical portion of the stretch run, matching the Wolves shot for shot and play for play. Hit two cluch FTs to reite the game at 100 with 5:30 to go, and was aggressive posting and attacking Darko down the stretch of the game. Set up several big shots for Landry down the stretch as well, including a couple of the nifty variety. Did get mushed inside several times in the 4th with that vertical problem of his, but the Kings have done well with guys with limited verts the last few drafts, and Cousins was a major impact player in his NBA debut, despite the slop moments.

Garcia ( A- ) -- we got about everything we could ask out of Cisco tonight. He knocked down shots, got out on the break, made good decisions, and came up with a few big defensive plays. Was aggressive, but not too aggressive, offensively early, and he and Beno had the offense humming in the early going. Did a nice job leading the break with Beno on the wing, dishing a perfectly timed dropoff pass for the layin. On the last play of the half was up top guarding the ball and calling out the defense, making sure Donte in particular had the corner covered (yes the opening night "crowd" in Minny was that quiet). Was nice to see somebody taking responsibility for the defense, but we still blew the possesion and got lucky when the Wolves missed the wide open three. Strong in the third and a key part of our 3rd quarter push with energy and hustle as much as points. Was our best player for much of the night but then was mysterously forgotten about for much of the 4th, and had we dropped this one there would have been some questions to ask of Westphal about why our leading scorer was playing cheerleader. After he did return came up with a big defensive block with two minutes to go to save a hoop and get us the extra possession.

Udrih ( B+ ) -- was very good for 3/4 of this one, largely disappeared in the 4th, but stepped up to drain the 4 clutch FTs we needed to hold on and secure the victory. Teamed with Cisco in the first quarter to push the offense along in the early going. Unfortunately was nowhere to be found on Ridnour in the open court, and watched him pull up and knock down long jumpers at will. And it wasn't watching from right in front of him eithe -- he was barely in the frame on some of those shots. Despite the poor individual defense, he was hustling and came up with a number of scramble plays and loose balls up top. Disappeared in the 4th after leading us through 3/4, but was the man when it came time to seal the deal in the fianl minute. Delivered a brilliant spin penetration and dropoff pass to Casspi to push the lead back to 3 with 35 seconds to go. Then went 4-4 on the clutch FTs to ice it as the Wolves went to intentional fouling with 30 seconds to go. Tyreke, Beno, Cisco, and now DeMarcus have all shown clutch abilities at various points, and maybe we are moving into a time when we start coming up with these close wins late in games.

Bench

Thompson ( C ) -- this was not JTs best game. Nor his second best game for that matter. With Dalembert still out, and Whiteside ineffective in a very brief stint, largely (in fact I think maybe completely) restricted to playing backup center. Not horribly effective in the first half, and then seemed to get passed over by Darnell Jackson in the rotation which did not make me happy. Was decent on the glass, but was struggling with his offense again. Threw a terrible pass at the close of the third to turn it over and cost us our final shot of the quarter. Tried to protect the middle, but wihtout much luck. Repeatedly came up with fouls instead of blocks. Got a dunk courtesy of a nice Greene pass in the early 4th, grabbed a couple of rebounds, and then gave way to the much more effective Cousins and Landry the rest of the way.

Casspi ( B- ) -- a pretty good overall game with a few spectacular plays and a few defensive misadventures. Came in with Donte getting off to the slow start and immediately played good D on Beasley, and also helped on the D glass. Began to lose control of Beasley on defense as the 2nd quarter went along however, and later was having some trouble with Johnson's hyper athleticism. Got the stretch minutes and came up with a nifty one handed rebound and falling down push shot all made in the same motion. Made a mistake letting Luke Ridnour pull up for a three to cut our lead to only 2 with a minute to go. Got up quickly for the flash dunk on the drive and dish from Beno to put us up 3 with 35 seconds to go. And played good defense on Ellington's desperation game tying 3pt attempt just before the buzzer. Overall this came in right at the B/B- barrier, and I chose the lower grade mostly just to emphasize the separation between the main guys tonight (Beno, Cisco, Cousins and Landry) and the rest. Omri was solid and contributed to this win though.

Head ( B+ ) -- and the last of our main contributors tonight was none other than...Luther Head. He played 20min tonight, and scored like Kobe, dished like DWade, and blocked shots light Dwight. Don't beleive me? His per40 stats tongiht would have been 28pts 6reb 6ast 4blks. Needless to say looked better here in the regular season in relief of Cisco then he did at any point in preseason trying to run the point. Hit his shots on the swing, got to the line, and saved kittens marooned in trees above raging rivers. Made several good little defensive plays as well, showing good hustle, and at least one of those blocks was legit. Not that that compares to kitten saving obviously. When we went a long spell with him trying to relieve Beno late in the game at the point, the results were less encouraging. Did not like the offense at all as he ran it (and he barely ran it) and back came some of those same ridiculous dribble for 5 seconds then chuck up your own one on one forced three type of decisions. Be headed back to the bench tommorow no doubt, which is a good thing, but showed tonight that he still can be that solid 5 year vet backup guard, and its nice to feel like we might have a capable sub there should anybody get hurt this season.

Jeter ( INC ) -- in at the end of the first quarter and had to switch on a pick and ended up having to guard 6'11" Kosta Koufos inside. Luckily the Wolves suck and did not recognize it. Hit his lone jumper on a kick pass in his short first half stint. Otherwise nothing, and after half Westphal tightened the rotations and quit trying to get every single King in uniform minutes so their parents could get pictures of them on court.

Jackson ( C- ) -- his one highlight was a nice baseline spin move early in the game, and ironically looked like a better post feeder than our guards, just quickly and efficiently entering it to Cousins. Seemed to get bumped up over JT in the rotation in the second quarter, and got paired with Landry in the absolute smallest frontcourt we could put out there. So with three 6'11" guys looking on, we lost momentum and fell behind in the mid 2nd as we got beatup inside. Somewhere along the line somebody must have handed Westphal a statsheet with Darnell's 1-3 2pt 1reb 1TO in 12min highlighted, becauuse the love affair ceased, and we went back to our mainline personnel for all but 2-3 minutes at the end of the third. Gets the"-" here almost as much as a distinction between he and JT's more effective "C" than for actually being bad. Wasn't horrible, just did not get much done.

Whiteside ( INC ) -- ineffective in his first 2nd quarter stint, quickly picking up 2 fouls without getting anything accomplished. Back I think for the final defensive play of the half. Not much of a debut, but I think just there to get his feet wet.

I'm very happy with the team.
Starting the season with a road win is fantastic!
The team can play without tyreke which is very very important.
Beno, Garcia and Landry were awesome. So proud of them.

I have to go ith DeMarcus. When he came back in with 6 minutes left, there was a two minute stretch where he just took the game over.

Without Reke it was looking like possible loss on paper in Minny. Then they played the game and it turned out that without Beno stepping up and without Carl stepping up it would surely have been a loss. Player of the game - tie. Plus, Garcia was big throughout.

I like the idea of limiting his minutes although I think this game had more to do with fouls limiting his, but he plays well when fresh. I would have liked to see them go more to Boogie early though.

I give this one to Carl. He was one of the few players who could get his own shot when we were struggling to score. I liked his production and him attacking Love really helped out as well. His defense wasn't too shabby either, he's undersized but he does try.

I voted Cousins, but I changed my mind to Beno for my Player of the Game. Beno was just too clutch at the end for me not to give it to him. However it is important to notice Cousins +18 on the night even though his stats weren't exactly mind blowing. It means his mere presence on the court is enough to change the momentum, even if he isn't doing any stat padding. Can't wait for the Nets game!!!

How about player of the game, Kurt Rambis. Kept Love on the bench for 16 minutes in the 2nd half. Thanks Kurtis!

Here was a Timberwolves media interview done with DeMarcus before the game at tonights shootaround.

Great response.... "I'm happy where I'm at" :):):):)

Wow can I change my vote to Kurt?

I went Carl, why you ask? Man crush aside, I noticed a slightly different Carl then last season (the part of it he was a King). He was aggressive, did not play overly conservative a's he often did last season, and he just made our low post scoring great while Cousins rode the pine. I see him bringing a lot of intangibles to the team this year, he just seems like he is ready to be the Cisco without an accent on our team. Can't wait to have Dally back, I think Cousins will be even better, as I agree he plays great fresh, and with another legit C to spell him I think it can only help.

P.S. I really appreciate the time you put into the grades Brick, and I look forward to them after every game. They are objective, accurate, and make me have a better understanding of the team.

the Pluses:
- good interior defense and switching
- very good rebounding and impressive use of our BIGS
- good ball movement with 25 assists and only 13 TO's
- impressive 4th quarter away for finishing five and win without Tyreke
- really excellent FT shooting except for Donte and Carl

The Minuses:
- transition defense in first half and lack thereof
- perimeter def in first half but corrected well in 2nd half

Otherwise for a first game and on the road. A very good game with so many new guys

Cudos to Head, DMC, Omri and wspecially Beno and my overall "A" to Landry

I didn't get the game here, so I was having to settle for stat updates and other people's analyses.

One thing I heard several people say was that, despite his foul trouble, Cousins gave Sac a huge point differential whenever he was on the floor (I think +18 is what he said). Is this accurate?

And I totally know what you mean with the whole "try to draw a foul instead of just playing defense" habit of his. It's been there a while...

Just checked the stats.. It seems that way. I knew when he was on the floor the Kings played well but I didn't think it was THAT well. Very nice. If you get League Pass it's free for this week I believe. I do think a couple of the blocking fouls charged to Cousins were charges. He was outside the circle and not moving on the last one he got. At least that's how I saw it.

Defense wasn't there but I think it will be fine once Evans plays. At least better than it was last night. But it was only one game so not a big deal. We did get the W.

I would love to see a lineup like this on the floor next game;
Beno
Evans
Casspi
Landry
Cousins

and see how that works.

I would also LOVE to see this 2nd-1st mixed unit out there;
Head
Garcia
Greene
Thompson
Dalembert

I say A's all around for winning the season opener for the first time in 10 years. Without Tyreke!

10 years? OMG...has it been that long.

Unfortunately was sick today. On the bright side, I got to watch my Kings (and the Giants). Since I now work swing shift, it was very nice to be home.

Great job, Brickie!! You are already off to a great start and we appreciate your time, effort, and insight into the game and the individual players.

Unless I'm mistaken didn't we win the opener against LeBron on his debut night?

10 years since we won a road opener. The same game -- LeBron in 2004 -- occurred to me too. But they were just talking about winning on the road. Which is actually kind of important for us given that we've now opened on the road for SEVEN STRAIGHT YEARS (which means the LeBron game would be the last one we opend at home). That has got to be intentional somehow, I just can't imagine why.

Though our defence has a long way to go to being championship calibre, I definitely saw an improvement in effort and reaction, as I mentioned in the game thread. We got numerous deflections, though we didn't always get the steal, but it was way better than anything I've seen from them recently in terms of activeness on the defensive end.

I'd rather pair Beno with Head. If you bring Head and Garcia off the bench more than likely we'll end up seeing Head at the point. Which as Brick pointed out, did not turn out very well.

Like i said before really surprised by Luther; looked real good and mostly chose the right time to shoot. Liked his D as well got some blocks in.

Looking forward to seeing how we do against the Nets. Brook Lopez is gonna be a tough match up; dropped 25 points against Detroit

RE: opening on the road this year, I do know that Disney on Ice is at ARCO right now through Sunday - don't know if that was booked before or after the NBA schedule was made, but ARCO is not available right now.

But ofcourse. Different mesure for different players.

Daddys boy would get A+ for Garcias or Landrys numbers.

Rather easy to spin this game in a positive way with so many good things happening and the Kings finally getting an opening night victory, and on the road at that! But to keep a balanced perspective, we were just seconds away from losing that game where all those good things happened!
My pick for player of the game was Landry. He was solid throughout, except maybe for those first few free throws. DeMarcus would have been my emotional pick.
My pick for 'biggest disappointment tonight' is a toss-up between Donte and JT. Both had some good moments, too, of course. But I hope they got the 'nerves' out of their systems so they can be more effective next time.

Yeah, I loved that answer! It's great to start the season with a win, on the road nonetheless! Yayyyy!
