You see what the power of the Grading Consortium can do? For the first time since back when all the garbage started we had a full slate of graders tonight, and you see the end result. We take all due credit.

However if for some perverse reason you wanted to doubt our omnipotence, you might also note that we came out in this game and played DEFENSE, we attacked inside, we focused our attack around our stars and Landry off the bench, and in general this was about as Michael Malonesque a game plan as we have seen since the aforementioned coach was escorted out of the building. And really, it was the spirit of the thing that was such a stark change. Don't know if there was a team meeting or what, but this was the squad we watched play in that first month of the season. They played hard, played together, and flat smashed a good team with every reason to want to win this one. But we were in their heads early, Cousins in particular, and we never let up. It was impressive, and while after 8 years of endless nope I guess nots its silly to even say these things, it might even be a foundational win to end the spiral. Tonight we were a good team because we chose to be. We just need to keep on choosing.

Gay ( A ) -- This was a very nice bounce back for Rudy, as both he and KD were somewhat disengaged defensively and Rudy got the better of the scoring matchup in both points and efficiency. Rudy opened up the game by hitting an elbow jumper over Durant on a catch and shoot. Two trips later he had his jumper blocked by Durant, which Rudy recovered and made a running hook shot in the lane. He followed that up with a wide-open three (hitting all three of his shots from downtown on the night.) That kind of sums up how the night went for him. He hit shots from all over the floor, and never let himself get too aggressive or too passive in the game. Perhaps the biggest improvement on the night was the lack of turnovers. Over the last handful of games, Rudy has been careless with the ball, getting stripped in the lane or just mishandling the ball outright. Tonight he limited the turnovers to two. He only had one assist, but part of that is because his entry passes to Cousins resulted in the OKC frontline blocking Cousins shots or hacking him. I thought his ball movement was very good with maybe one or two exceptions where he took a more difficult shot than necessary. Rudy was also active on the boards all night, ending with 9 rebounds, including 4 offensive boards. More nights like tonight would be very welcome. --Hadlowe

Thompson ( C ) -- This score might seem a bit high for a player that only scored two points, but he only took three shots, two of which were at the basket, where the Ibaka monster lurks. Ibaka blocked 8 shots tonight, so no one was getting a free pass at the basket. So offensively JT didn't contribute much, but he did play good aggressive defense tonight. I had JT down for two blocks, but the official scorer only gave him one. JT also pulled down 8 rebounds in 17 minutes of play. I was pleased to see JT switch and show on pick and rolls that he was involved in. Something that didn't happen in the last game. A couple of days of practice seemed to help. JT's free throw shooting continues to be a mystery to me. In the first quarter he missed a put back and calmly sank two free throws. But in the third quarter when he drove the left baseline and was fouled. The threw up two god awful looking bricks. Most importantly, JT contributed to the win tonight. You might even say he impacted the game defensively. To be honest, they really don't need JT to do much more than he did tonight. --Baja

Cousins ( B+ ) -- here was a tough grade to figure out because what you had here was something you almost never see: this was a good game, almost a dominant game, by a player shooting 6-23 from the field. I mentioned in the preamble above that as much as anything this game was won by a renewal of spirit, and spiritually Cuz knocked this one out of the park. He sat back for a few minutes early working as a passer, getting teammates going (or trying to as thee was again a steady refusal to hit shots off his kicks), pumping guys up, responding to a huge Westbrook dunk with a nice spinning move to get fouled in the paint, and being extremely active defensively. It was really Thompson and Gay doing a lot of the tough work inside until maybe 6 minutes into this one when he and Westbrook began to get into it, and Cuz's response was amazing. He launched an all out assault inside, reckless at times, slamming his way inside, having words with Westbrook, with Perkins, and rapidly sending nearly the the entire OKC frontline to the bench with fouls. It was the focus of it that was eye opening...right up until the point Serge Ibaka waded into the fray. Because Serge Ibaka has ALWAYS had Cuz's number with his help blocks, and new skinny Cuz (seriously we may not be able to call him "big" again until next season) doesn't even have the truly overwhelming power advantage he normally does. So you want to know how 6-23 happens? 6-23 happens when Serge Ibaka has 8 blocked shots on the night, and Skinny Cuz has 8 blocked shots against him. Cuz didn't miss miss miss his way to 6-23. He attacked and attacked and attacked, and Serge swatted them and swatted them and swatted them, from in front, behind, to the side. And for a while there it finally damaged his calm as he attacked, battled, got blocked, got the ball back, missed, just could not get a finish in there, and came back to do it again and again. Frustration more than anything else caused him to finally hop in the air after he wanted a call and did not get it, and boom, T. But it wasn't a sign of a meltdown, Cuz did not go away. The largest effect was on that looming 5 Ts on the year goal. Think that may have been it. But Cuz himself? Returned to the game right back in the groove, immediately found Nik for an open three, which Nik of course missed, then drove to put the 3rd foul on Adams, the 3rd on Perk came a couple of minutes later. And after another extended sequence of Ibaka blocks finally finally got a spin power move through Ibaka for the +1 (with the missed FT) and a big flex. Not sure you can do the flex when the guy has swatted you 5 times, you get 1 strong finish, and then he promptly swats you again the next time you go inside, but still, Cuz was pumped all game long, and in the final 30 seconds of the half in an important play he finally got the 3rd foul on Ibaka too.
That play was made doubly important when 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter Cuz drew a charge on Ibaka for his 4th -- one of THREE straight Cuz drawn charges during an inspiring defensive run to stop OKC comeback hopes in their tracks in the early 3rd. Literally one minute later it was another drawn charge to put the 4th foul on Collison (theirs not ours), and the question began to become if any of OKC's stable of thugs and bangers was going to make it to the final buzzer. He ignored Perkins whispering sweet nothings in his ear, appeared to dismiss him actually, came up with 3 or 4 nice blocks, was aggressive chasing things off the glass, and as good as Gay and Collison (ours) were playing, was just at the spiritual heart of everything, as he has to be. But offensively things never really turned, even with the Ibaka impediment eliminated for a long stretch. He tried jumpers instead, but they wouldn't fall. So how can I call this an A except for effort? But its also no C or anything close. He set guys up and even the way he missed was impressive as his constant attack had the Thunder back on their heels and on the bench in foul trouble the whole game. That damn bug has destroyed his shooting percentages, but 6-23 or not, this sort of effort here is the sort of thing that will still get you into an All Star game.--Brick

McLemore ( C- ) -- The very first play of the game was a designed play where Ben came off a screen and curled into the lane and Cousins hit him with a bounce pass for an easy bucket. The only problem….? The spacing wasn’t great, the bounce pass wasn’t great, and Ben couldn’t hold on to the ball and the play went from an easy hoop to a TO. By and large that first play represented the entire game for Ben. In the first quarter he was really active, getting the ball in great spots to shoot, cutting into the lane for potentially open looks, and just getting into good spots to be effective. The problem…he didn’t score his first points till half-way through the 3rd quarter. He was active and playing good ball, he just couldn’t seem to finish off plays in a positive manner. His first basket is when he ran the ball all the way up the court, attacked the rim and finished and he ended the 3rd quarter with a nice weak-side offensive rebound and in-the-air put-back with 5 seconds left. Early in the 4th quarter, with the Kings struggling to score, he dribbled around and then took a highly contested high-air floating 3pt shot. It was one of those patented Jerry’s “A bad shot is better than no shot things…”(I don’t quite agree with that philosophy…but that’s ok) and it went in and put some points up on the board to stop what could have been a scoring drought. But while the game was still potentially an actual game, those were the points he put up. So active, but not really one of the reasons why we blew out the Thunder. His best contribution was that he ended up with 4 steals (though two were of the ‘gift’ variety) and it points to his activity. But he didn’t spend much of any time guarding Westbrook, spent 8 minutes guarding Roberson, and the rest just keeping close to Morrow and Waiters…so he wasn’t really having to shut anyone down in this one. We got the win, he didn’t hurt us, so a middling grade for him in this one. --Uncia

Collison ( A ) -- This was Darren Collison’s night. Not much to write about it, the guy was simply excellent. I was especially impressed about his 3pt shooting. He took them with grace, without forcing them and balancing his feet before letting it go. It was really enjoyable to see Westbrook fly by and Darren just to take a step aside to release. After some over eager penetrations in the first quarter and getting denied by OKC’s excellent shot blocking capabilities, Darren was quick to realize the limitations he had there. I think that was great mind work and adjustment from him right there. Later he cut to the basket from the side, which gives more depth to operate (and even pass), and that was successful. Good fake and a bucket. Great passes, good work with the clock, steals completed the beautiful all around picture Darren provided tonight. Although BenMc was on Westbrook most of the time, the OKC guards were not able to get anything done. Darren was alert and returned fast to the defense. A total of 24 points (and especially 5-10 from down town), 7 assists and 2 steals is a very good production for the night. Beyond that, he shows good leadership qualities. He can make order in the offense. Love to see Darren develop and get better. Fantastic value for money player. --Kingston

Landry ( B ) -- Landry played 17 minutes and scored 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting. You can't get much more efficient than that. Four of his baskets came in the first half. He entered the game at the 4:44 mark of the first quarter, but didn't score until the start of the second quarter when he hit a twenty footer off a feed from Collison. The very next possession down the floor he hit an eighteen footer. He followed that with another eighteen footer. His last bucket of the quarter came when he put the ball on the floor and drove in for a layup. He closed out the first half by missing an eighteen foot heat check. He also played good defense, rotating, and showing on the P & R. Something he was just atrocious at in the last game. Carl's eight points in the second quarter gave the second unit a nice and much needed boost, considering how badly the second unit has played of late. He closed out his scoring with a sixteen footer in the fourth quarter. Carl also grabbed 4 boards. Best game for Carl in quite a while. Lets hope he continues to play this well. --Baja

Williams ( C+ ) -- Williams primary contribution was hustling to track down long rebounds. During his stint in the second quarter, he didn't see the ball much during the Carl Landry show, but he played his part in the offense, didn't force anything, and didn't do any Derrick Williams things to make me hurl foodstuffs at the television. Defensively, he wasn't a huge liability, with his only major lapse coming from leaving Morrow wide open for a three on a miscommunicated switch. His sole basket was a revenge three pointer on the next possession. I can live with this Derrick Williams off the bench. --Hadlowe

Stauskas ( D- ) -- Definitely not a confidence-building game by Nik in this one.The good news….he didn’t let his opponent torch him for 20 points. He did get beat once or twice, but never did anything to actively hurt us on the defensive side of the ball. The bad news is like Ben, he was just ineffectual. The difference is that Ben got to play 4 times as many ‘meaningful’ minutes to put up some stats while Nik wasn’t afforded that luxury. (Nor did he really deserve it in this one.)He got in for the last minute of the 1st quarter and didn’t touch the ball…then got about 7 minutes in the 2nd quarter which were his only minutes till the last two minutes of garbage time.In those 7 minutes he missed the open catch-and-shoot 3pt shot from Cousins… which was his first shot and the one he has to be able to hit. His next two shots came off of creating separation off the dribble and getting off two open looks, neither of which fell.
So he had three open looks and just couldn’t find the bottom of the net.Corbin elected to go with Ray instead of Nik in the 2nd half, so Nik finally got in with 2 minutes left and forced one shot as he attacked the rim and was resoundedly blocked…and that was pretty much the game.
He’s got pressure on him to hit his shots when he gets the opportunity…he wasn’t really a liability on defense in this one, but he’s got to make the most of his minutes while out there. We know he is a good shooter, he just has to relax and not force things as much.Anyway, a blow-out win, a bagel for points with little contribution…hopefully he’ll play better when we need him to.--Uncia

Hollins ( INC ) -- in ancient Cyprus there lived a celebrated sculptor, Pygmalion, who supposedly saw so much feamle debauchery on the island that he came to hate all women and resolved never to get married. But when he made a lovely female sculpture more beautiful than any living woman he fell in love with it and asked Aphrodite to give it life. She granted the wish, and Galatea was "born", and they would go on to have a daughter named Paphos. Now Paphos is also the name of a Greek island where Aphrodite was worshipped, so maybe they named their daughter after Aphrodite's island since Aphrodite brought Galatea to life. Or maybe somebody just mixed up their myths. Anyway, what does any of this have to do with Ryan Hollins' game? Not a damn thing! Look at that boxscore! There WAS no Ryan Hollins game. There were only Cousins minutes. And then a without Cousins minutes. So I thought I'd tell you a more interesting story. --Brick

McCallum ( C+ ) -- It certainly was not easy for Ray to get much recognition after Collisons great game. Poor shooting night for Ray, which takes a lot off his evaluation score. On the other hand, I must congratulate him for keeping his head in control and not getting into a shooting spree when his 3-point shot did not seem to be calibrated. You also have to admire this guy’s motor. He is a high octane player. Unfortunately he is also often careless in his ball handling. Tonight he did well turning only one ball over, but that didn't need to happen. Poor communication from the team. His 5 rebounds (one offensive) and 3 steals are good evidence of a super energetic player. He has a lot to learn, but you sympathize with the guy giving his heart on the floor. --Kingston

Did the team just nail PDA's final nail? Play PDA gimmick ball and give up 115 pgg, struggle to beat the Knicks in overtime. Play Malone style defense first ball blow out the Thunder. I really hope Vivek was paying attention to the game and realized his GM is a jackass.

I was this close to predicting this in the Game thread earlier this afternoon -
the possibility that the Thunder ("led" by their two stars) would show up and lay an egg was high.

When an embattled front office is close to a fanbase revolting against them, games like this tend to happen.

Don't bank on nights like this, KingsFans.....
y'all saw the discrepancy with the way the refs officiated tonight, I hope.

Maybe PDA is finally listening to fans, and that big juicy brain of his is taking a back seat for now?

My complaints about the game:
1)Cousins passing up easy dunks because he doesn't realize he's wide open
2)Aside from Landry, the Kings basically got 6 bench pts
3)Had to play starters heavy minutes because of unreliable bench

I also think Grant and Jerry confused Jackson's number a lot tonight with OKC's other guards. Waiters and Morrow combine for 4-21...

I also don't know how Cousins ended up 6-23... it didn't even feel like he took a lot of shots. Ibaka probably blocked like half of them..

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? What just happened tonight? Watched every minute and ..... WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Who were those guys? Now am REALLY confused. aaarrrggghhhh. Points out we had a real team hidden in there somewhere ("..... there's a pony in there somewhere" story!).

Very enjoyable game. Good to see the guys ply tough like Jerry said, like they were mad. Whatever it was great. I'm sorry OKC had a bad shooting night but it was nice it happened on our floor. A little more passing out from inside to open shooters and it paid off. Like to see more of that. Sorry Nik couldn't have joined in with a couple of baskets. It'll come. I'm at the game on Friday. Be nice to see another spirited effort.

An "A" each for the big 3, a "B" for Ben for great defense and recovering his shot in second half, a "B" for Landry for his points, a "B-" for Ray moving the ball and improving a bit every game and, and, .... were there others out there?

Big Cuz basically had mediocre game for him, yet was still amazingly dominant. Rudy was Rudy, this is guy we all wished for as a top flight #2 option and he delivered big-time tonight on both ends. Darren was Kings floor general directing the offense and directing teams tenacious defense. Excellence from the Big 3 = WIN! When this trifecta happens I wouldn't say Kings are unbeatable but would say they could play squared up in your face against anybody. Now bottle this "plan" and on to the next one against Denver:)

Well the Thunder played awful, and the Kings finally play a good game in the Ty Corbin era, make that one out of ELEVEN now. so i wont get my hopes up too much.

But it was nice to see them throw the PDA fast paced gimmick ball out the window for one night. I hope they stick to that gameplan

Yes! At least the team is doing what it used to do, making Malone look much better. Just bring him back and fire PDA if need be...

i could just see Boogie giving a pregame speech tonight to the squad:
"Alright guys, let's get back to what Coach Mike taught us, defense and attack the paint. get them in foul trouble. play physical! **** running fast and **** Jazz music!"

something like that i'd assume

Ray Mac desperately needs to learn how to go to his left at the rim.
Stauskas needs to swing down to Reno to get some touch back in that shot.
Cousins needs to quit being so dramatic on floor.

Other than that. GREAT TEAM WIN TONIGHT!
Biggest win of the year. We got a big lead against a good team and actually held onto it! Hallelujah!

The only credit I will give is to Corbin. MAYBE PDA let him have his way.

That is the thing about Corbin. At heart he is more like Malone and Jerry Sloan, a hard nosed, defense first coach. If he gets back to his own way of coaching, instead of allowing the FO dictate how to coach, he may be able to turn this ship around.

VIVEK, PLEASE FREE CORBIN TO COACH THE WAY HE WANTS AND NOT THE WAY YOU ARE FORCING HIM TO COACH AND SAVE THE KINGS SEASON!

That's what I meant. Maybe Vivek and PDA learned something in their year's experience with the team and also the Monday question and answer session. Although the answers may have been like your average evasive politician, they still heard intelligent questions that gave a clue as to what the bright fans thought was best for the team. The fact that this game went so well couldn't have been better timing.

Now keep at it. It's really interesting that if you look at Boogie's stat line, it doesn't really show how inspirational he was.

Just watched the game. The Kings where just tenacious in all aspects. Very exciting Basketball. I though the team was better tonight than they have been all year. I think the up tempo play got them in better shape for tonight. They dominated the Thunder. They got a big lead and did not back down from it. If they can play this tenacious on a nightly basis... Watch out. Here's to hoping!

Wish I could watch this game. Boogie's FG% was very bad but judging by everyone's comments, what he did went far beyond the statline.

I hope the players force our real identity to come back. They deserve to be competitive rather than run some gimmick BS offense that literally no one wants except PDA and Vivek.

Cousins had several shots blocked in the paint. But it did not stop him. He kept going at it and got to the line. Collison shot the lights out. The Thunder made a few runs but the Kings did not budge.

I thought Boogie was going to get the whole OKC roster in foul trouble. Well he did get all the Bigs in foul trouble.

Where do I find that in the data points????

Thank you Refs for seeing the fouls, they are always there.

I'm sure you could find that data pretty easy.

The thunder shot awful and many were open looks. Thankful for DC7 he played great.
