Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Interesting game from an analytical standpoint. Tale of two halves. Some problems made obvious.

I think something fun for a theme tonight. So how about Theme = Cryptids.

What is a cryptid you might ask? Well, basically a modern day mythological beastie, given a pseudoscientific name to sound more legitimate. Big Foot is a cryptid. So is the Loch Ness Monster. I'll stick to more obscure and hence perhaps more amusing ones.

Boxscore

Casspi ( D- ) -- got the start but just never looked comfortable and the ball was swinging the other way with Landry and Greene munching up 30 shots between them. Worse yet is the continuation of the defensive problems, and has developed a nasty tendency of late to lose guys and be 15 feet away as they drain open threes on us. Shuffled his feet after catching the ball in the paint in easy scoring position, then another turnover trying to get it to Landry. Bad spacing. Airballed a three and seems to be having real problems hitting open standstill threes for some reason. Had a brief highlight with a very nice spinning drive in the early 2nd. Then got out running the break and took the in rhythm feed from McGuire for the layup. Would be his last score. Nice passing work with Beno and Hawes on one play -- if they gave out 2 assists like they do in hockey, he would have gotten one. In the third had a nice dropoff pass to JT on the break, but did not last long, and I think it was the defense that did it to him. Back in the final quarter and was quiet beyond a bad pass on the break for his 4th turnover. Got blown by by Hill several times, and appropriately for this game got beat for the closing dunk by JRich.
batsquatch.jpeg

Batsquatch -- so cheesy its stuck using a derivative ripoff name, if your livestock ever going missing up in the Pacific Northwest, try to keep a straight face for the insurance adjuster as you blame it on this critter.

Landry ( B- ) -- started off this one looking determined to put the poor night in L.A. behind him. Got a weak foul called against him when Amare fell into him off balance, forced a post move against Amare that you need to pass out (he's been looking like a bit of a black hole so far), but got it back and laid it in. Then got inside position on Amare and was fouled going up. Block on Amare, but pretty much worked over defensively early. Missed a jumper, but then hit the next two. And wa doing a nice job on the glass in the early going. Came in midway through the second after we got good play off the bench, and split apir of long jumpers to finish the half wiht 10pts 5rebs and on pace for a 20-10 night. Missed the jumper to start the third. Got some FTs as the game began to get physical, and while many of them rattled and did not look pure, they all went in. Missed the side jumper. Had a ball slapped away in the post, triggering a Suns break. Hit the jumper late in the quarter with us fading. Kicked it to Donte for the three. Layup out on the break. Missed a shot, but poked away a steal from behind to stop the Phoenix break. Got fouled in the post again. The good rebounding early faded however, and Amare pummled him on the glass in the second half on his way to doubling him up 14rebs to 7. And Amare is of course a notriously weak rebounder. Got blocked in the post by Frye, and finished the night at 18pts 7rebs, but on only 6-15 from the field. Big step froward from the first game, and the thing that is so easy to see is that Landry is man, not a boy. There is none of this will he or won't he, does he have confidence or does he not, is he scared, is he intimidated, is he distracted...none of that stupid stuff we always have to worry about with Jason and Spencer. Landry is a confident offensive performer. No hesitations, always looking to attack, doesn't care who he's facing. Now the question that has yet to be answered is is that confidence really warranted. Is he truly a primary weapon who should have the green light and a major chunk of the offense designed for him. Or is he just a lesser player with moxie who will take those shots, but maybe you'd be better spreading it around.
Baitou_Mountain_Tianchi.jpg

Lake Tianchi Monster -- up on the northern border between North Korea and China there is a huge volcanic crater which has filled in with water to form a lake (somewhat like Crater Lake, only bigger -- heck of a volcano). And according to locals there is a monster living in the lake. Or maybe a number of monsters, its a little fuzzy. Far from being some ancient Chinese/Korean mytholgical beast though, the first sighting weren't until 1903 when a buffalo like beast was said to have attacked some people before being shot 6 times and retreating into the water. Later sightings have it appearing like a seal, or yes, surprise surprise, like a plesiosaur who apparently waited aroud 70 million years, hiked across several hundred miles of land, and hopped into a volcanic crater thousands of feet off the ground. Sometimes the creature is said to have a human-like face. At all times it is just very very silly.

Thompson ( B- ) -- you know, watching these past couple of games since Landry arrived and assumed the goto inside scorer duties, a new possible career arc has occurred to me for Jason. I mentioned earlier in the year the similarity of his numbers at a similar age to Drew Gooden. But he has slid so naturally into a 10 and 9, 9 and 7 type support role next to Landry that another possibility has occurred to me -- Nick Collison. The 9 and 9 type part time starter/useful PF/C bencher, who doesn't munch many shots, keeps it simple, rebounds, and is a useful and occasionally even impactful roleplayer. That was kind of Jaosn tonight, and for a half in Golden State. Kind of out of the pressure cooker, and seemingly settling in fairly smoothly into the support role. First couple of inside attempts were bricked and knocked away clumsily. Then hit an open side jumper from Reke on a scrmable play. Solid boardwork in the early going. No hesitation on an open jumper when it came. Good strong post move, and even some active interior defense. In the third airballed a long open jumper, but came back with a dunk on the break. Avoided foul trouble, but began to get into it with the refs in the 3rd during a physical battle with Lopez, who ran over him for several scores. Stepped into a passing lane for a steal late as we were fading, then picked up an offensive foul. But the fouls were never a major issue nor a major distraction. And his clumsiness and finishing problems were not highlighted, just part of the background. Overall this role just kind of felt natural (which is not to say a Collison/Landry frontline is exactly high level stuff).
800px-Allghoikhorkhoi.jpg

Mongolian Death Worm -- ah! ahh!! Mongolian Death Worm!! Ahhhh!! So, um, next time you happen to be out wandering around the Gobi desert, try to avoid the 5' long red worms that can spit sulferic acid and electrocute you like an electric eel ok? Oddly no expedition has ever found one. But that's probably just because anybody who does encounter one is obviously wormfood.

Greene ( B- ) -- I've begun to really feel for Donte -- in a lot of ways he's really been the ultimate trooper for this team. Yanked in and out of the lineup, one night he gets big minutes, the next almost none. One night he's a starting power forward, the next a backup shooting guard, and everything in between. When you think about its a testament to him being a lot brighter than there was any reason to think he was after his first year that he can even remember all the plays from all the different positions he is asked to play, let alone develop any chemistry with any of the constantly rotating groups of teammates with whom he's thrown on the floor. Tongiht coming off a nothing role as a backup something or the other in Golden State, he was suddenly elevated back to starting 6'11" shooting guard against a team that he had played PF against the last time we saw them. And he got off to a dynamic start with not one, not two, but three three point plays int he first quarter alone, two on the break, and then one on a strong drive. Mixed in some strong post defense as well, although JRich was scoring on everyone, including Donte (be nice if our rotations didn't involve leaving him wide open at the three point line). In the third missed the spinning drive, but knocked down the three in the mid quarter. Another three off the kickout from Landry. A tough drive that did not fall. Faded late, as in the 4th all he had were a couple of missed jumpers, including one an open three on the kickout from Reke, and a turnover trying to feed Landry in the post -- something Donte and Reke both did on what were clearly just new teammate miscommunication type errors. After the hot start fell back to finish up with a 6-15 night to match Landry's, but it was overall a solid game, and anight after playing 14 minutes as a forgotten man, it was 42 as a featured player this time out. Such is the life of Donte Greene.
400px-Mothman_statue_2005.JPG

Mothman -- a prime example of the power of hysteria, the Mothman suddenly popped up in West Virginia in the late 60s as a young couple claimed it chased them down the road at 100mph. The next night people went out looking for it, and of course there were more sightings. Soon sightings were cropping up all over the area. But, ooh scary, seemed to abruptly die off after a tragic bridge collapse a month later. So now some people say it was a space alien, others a portent of doom, others a really pissed off insect seeking revenge for the invention of bug zappers. If you really want to know more, there was an incredibly boring movie made about it maybe 5-6 years ago starring Richard Gere that should cure you of any fascination.

Evans ( D+ ) -- this one started off well, but the second half turned into a real struggle, and overall it was probably one of his weakest games of the year. In the early going stripped Nash on the drive, drove past JRich for a finish that spun went in with major English, then had another strong drive. Knocked away a pass meant for Amare. Barely dribbled in the technical FT for an illegal defense. Hit a pullup jumper. Then ran the break for the +1 for Greene. Got called for a charge on the break against Nash. Missed a jumper. Calmy found JT for the open jumper off the scramble play. Sat for a long spell as the bench did well, and after he was finally back in past the midpoint of the 2nd, did not have a chance to do much befor picking up his 3rd foul. I like though that we continue to just leave him in and let him go with 3 fouls -- done that a lot this season. And while you know that sooner or later its going to bite us in the butt and he's going to get #4 before half, it shows a nice refusal to let the refs' whistles dictate our play/minutes. Daring them to take out our best player on a chape whistle or touch foul. Wild drive that missed, but then got out on the break with a long armed ooh aah reverse scooped layup. Finsihed the half with a play that had the sideline chuckling when he saw the ref out of the corner of his eye, thoguht it was a King, and threw the ball to him for a turnover. We scored well during the half, and Reke was generally doing a nice thing of psuhing things and finding people. Boy did things grind to a halt after half though. Started the 3rd wiht a turnover on the blown alley oop pass to Donte. Too much dribbling and settled for contested jumper, and looked frustrated at our spacing, or lack thereof. Saavy play to get to the line, but hit only 1-2. Settled for a quick jumper again. Bad post feed turnover, and just looked like he could not figure out the semi-zone the Suns were sinking into to cut off his penetration. Should have left people open all over the place, but he wasn't seeing them, and frankly on most occasions neither was I -- wish I had taped it to figure out how that is possible. In the 4th forced a drive and flipped up something when not able to get to the rim. Frustration it looked like. Drove, beat the first man, but got it blocked by Hill ont he help. Too small to stop Frye in the post (yes the big wuss will actually try to post a PG). Got claled for the double dribble as he agin did not lok sure of how he w3anted to attack things. Kept on missing Landry as the Suns were double teaming him off the pick and roll and he was mysteriosly sending it across the top rather than dropping the pass to Landry rolling. Came up with an incredible up and under spin layup for a late highlight, but it was isilated. Added a couple of passing hoops in the last couple of minutes after the game was over -- now those were stat padding type deals, althoguh both teams had their starters ont he floor and played it to the end. Had decent energy early, but looked tired and frustrated after half, and I think needs to get in the film room with one of the assistant coaches and figure out why that zone was so puzzling, and where the open guys should be for the kickouts.
Myakka_skunk_ape_2.png

Skunk Ape -- its hairy, it stinks, if you are ever down Florida way, beware the skunk ape.

Bench

Udoka ( D ) -- I thought his arrival corresponded in an uptick of our overall play, but that may have only been because Omri was really struggling. In any case its hard to give much of a grade to a guy who basiclaly pitched oan 0-fer on the night. Missed his frist three jumpers as we kept finding him open in his corners and he kept missing. In the got reluctant to shoot and turned it over. Used his muscle to clear room for a jumper...and missed it too. Ended up losing minutes to newcomer Dominic McGuire, who plays a similar game, but played it better tonight.
Loveland-Frog.gif

Loveland Frog -- giant 4 foot tall bipedal frogs terrorize Ohio!!! Did Kevin know about this?

Udrih ( B+ ) -- in and immediately with a quick strong drive turning the corner and getting fouled. Nice nice dropoff pass to Hawes for the layup. Nice little 15 ft pullup. Used a Thompson pick and hit the three to close the first half scoring. In the 3rd got a turnover not getting the shot off against the 24 sec clock. Good job recovering from behind on the break to stop a basket. Was the only thig we had going for strteches of the 4th, and fortunately or unfortunately kind of knew it and began to just go one on one rather than risk giving it to one of his ice cold teammates. Little jumper after returning, then a step back three against the clock. Then drove and dribbled it off his knee out of bounds. Pullup on the break to get it back to 8 midway through the 4th. Missed the side jumper off the pick. Short on a little stop and pop, but got a final three off a set play at the 3:00 mark. After the Arizona sand got in the offensive gears there in the second half, was just about the only King looking good at that end of the floor.
anaconda.jpg

Giant Anaconda -- this one is so well known as to be trite, even inspiring a series of bad movies (the first of which wanted you to believe that you could hop on a small house boat in the tropical heat with JLo and Kari Wuhrer in their primes and have any time leftover for making some stupid documentary). But here I will use it as well as a stand in for the Minhocão (giant worm) and any number of another giant long wormy/snaky things that are rumored to exist in the rapidly dwindling South American rain forests. The largest reliably measured anaconda on record BTW is 25ft long, which is a BIG ole snake that you want no part of, but the "giant anacondas" of legend are supposed to be 60ft, 80ft, 100ft etc. long. Fortunately at the rate that poverty and ignorance are burning the rain forests down there, give it another 50 years and we'll have all those damn tree things cleared away and 100ft snake things won't have anyplace left to hide.

Hawes ( C ) -- in off the bench and quickly hit the side jumper, then added the finish on the pick and roll. Drew a foul on the post move against Frye. Layup from the great little dropoff from Beno. Unfortunately was racking up fouls like mad on the other side, and for the second night in the row was a ghost on the glass again as we got smacked around, even by *gulp* Channing Frye.
800px-SordesDB.jpg

Kongamato -- if you happen to find yourself traveling upriver in the Congo, maybe you'll be lucky enough to be attacked by this Jurassic Park reject -- a living pterosaur that oddly is never actually seen by anybody despite being placed squarely in the middle of primie birdwatching territory.

McGuire ( B ) -- got his first chance as a King and did well with it. In to start the 2nd, and immediately forced a drive with no hope of going in, and was chuckling at the nice debut. But then played some good d to begin to make himself useful, adn showed a little skill with a nice in rhythm bounce pass on the break to Casspi for the layin. Played strong defense on Richardson to close the first half and force the miss at the buzzer. Back in in the mid 3rd quarter a Westphal did that thing he does where he gathers up whichever benchers played best before the break and makes them his new top bench after half. Unfortunately immediately turned it over with a bad pass, but gave us a good boost on the defensive glass. Missed the open side jumper, and never did get one to fall. 0pts 5rebs --but this was a roleplayer's game, and a pretty successful one at that. Defended and rebounded, and that's kind of the core of his game. Will need to knock down some open jumpers to really stick however, and figures to be in direct competition with Ime for minutes.
Dover_demon.JPG

Dover Demon -- its the late 70s. You're a teenager. You live in Dover Mass. and are bored to tears. What do you do? How about see a green, or possibly grey, hairless alien looking creature with glowing eyes but no mouth or ears, but which can nonetheless emit a piercing shriek, and which hangs around in trees trying to scare people (making it a mean alien as well). For a couple of days in April 1977 seemed to be all the rage, then it "disappeared". Even the eternally credulous cryptid chasers have noted that every sighting was by teenagers and concluded that maybe just maybe what we are talking about is a hoax. Damn cynics. :p

Omri's D has D-evolved to K-Mart level the past few weeks. On the O-side of the ball, how can a man airball so many shots in one game?

Reke looks exhausted right now. Maybe we should just sit him down for a few games and let him rest. The only thing we're playing for is more lotto balls and Reke most definitely doesn't help us in that endeavor.

I think our rookies have hit the wall. Tyreke's talent makes his wall higher than most. but they have logged a lot of mins for rookies.

Casspi's defense in the Clippers game was terrible. He left Butler open for so many shots it was ridiculous. He needs to work on his defense.

No way Reke should get any rest. The bright spot of this season has been Reke's amazing rookie year; he should get back to averaging 20/5/5 and win rookie of the year unanimously. This would be huge positive going into next season, even possibly helping Sactown bring in a free agent.

I think its normal and we cannot expect too much from these young guys.
Adjusting to this level and playing so frequent costs a lot of power to adjust.

@Reke:
To learn how to be a leader takes time.
Now when Kevin is gone he is our option number one and he will have to adjust to this new situation and pressure.
And will for sure succeed.

@Casspi:
Still a rookie that needs to learn a looooot.
He´s defense is awful and he really needs to work on it.
Start NOW!

But anyway I still enjoy to watch this team since I see and feel the potential it has.

GO KINGS

I like this theme. I wonder which player is going to be "The Mongolian Death Worm"

Again Hawes did terrible. He grabbed 2, that's 2 rebounds in the last 2 games. He deserves an F.
well to be fair he really didn't get much playing time tonite. he only played 11 minutes and went 3 for 3 for 7 points. although he still should have grabbed more than 1 board in that time span

A close family friend of mine, who claims he has seen Nessy, would disagree with those two phrases being used in the same sentence :p.

I don't understand how someone who has so many things going for him can be such a flop. He's 7'1'', he has access to things like the best trainers, dieticians, and coaches in the world, and it's like he doesn't even try. I'm really starting to get mad at the guy. He doesn't work nearly as hard as he should.

We couldn't grab a rebound to save our lives this game. Tyreke is obviously losing confidence in his team mates, at least in this game after Udoka kept missing all the open shots Tyreke just stopped trying to penetrate and kick out. Donte always misses a more open Casspi and takes the 3 instead of swinging to Omri at the baseline. We need to surround Tyreke with better shooters, not some '3 pt specialist' named Udoka and Nocioni.

Also, why is our pick and roll offense so bad? You'd think with the bigs always coming out to double team Tyreke our guy who set the screen would be open...

i wanna remind you all the thunders, they had great rookies and soph's and they were an awful team until this year.
the Kings showed some good potencial early this year, and as i said before, you can't excpect much from a team that both of here scoring leaders are Rookies. we will get another good Rookie this year and hopfully next year things will look different.

why the pick n' roll so bad?
they don't know how to stick there man to the one who's blocking, they always have this gap, and the defender slips threw, i saw it many times it's redicules.

Tyreke can be the Alaska Thunderbird for his "freakish" wingspan.
Hawes can be the Jersey Devil, because I don't think it's shown up for 50 years.
Nocioni can be the Lobizon, or Argentinian Werewolf. Maybe check and see if his play is correlated with the full moon... or there's always the chupacabra which might be appropriate since that is the "goat sucker"

4 games after all star under 99 points....
I think that other teams take Evans and Casspi a lot more serious than at the start of the season. and play off teams are getting better and better, especially on defense! I am really curious if Tyreke can average 20/5/5 from all star break till the end of the season. I can bet he couldn`t!
But I really don`t understand coach, messing the starting line-up every game. I would definetely like to see Beno playing more pick n roll as he is the best in this segment of the game. I think Landry and other bigs would have much more from the game too.

This is a VERY Young team. I suspect that Casspi and Tyreke have hit the wall. Brockman is injured, and we have a bunch more young players to try and get into the mix. There isn't going to be a lot more wining this year. That is just the way it is. I think that Casspi and Tyreke should both get rests, but it probably wont happen for either player so they play is going to be ragged and poor the rest of the way. No one on the Kings is stepping up to take charge yet, and that probably will be the case until next year when we have a unit on the floor that has played 10 or more games in a row with the same starting 5. Right now it's more of a showcase than it is an effort to win games. Some players are playing for other teams next year. Some players are proving they belong. Some players are proving that they dont belong. It is a tough team to root for right now. I am not looking for wins anymore, just improvement. Besides, we are in lottery mode right now and any wins we get are non productive. Maybe that is why Westphal is playing mix-n-match with the lineups?

Omri has hit the rookie wall pure and simple. He is tired, dead tired compounded by the Israeli groups that demand his time before and/or after every game. We don't see that but it is a very tiring experience. At Clips game he had 86 in the group to deal with and some 20+ were little girls 6-8 yrs old. The adults of the group said he was meeting with them before and after the game. Whew. Another stressful thing we fans tend not to see.

I think defensively we have a good group but they all need time to adapt to each other and the Kings and the NBA.

I like most the comment above about the Thunder last year and this year. Very big similarities. It's like this year is a tryout for all the Kids we have and now 9 new player of the 15. Like it or not that's the way it is in a real transition year. Boy am I looking forward to Summer League this year. "jdmhv" and I have already agreed to hit the summer league again this year. Could this be a "KingsFans.com SoCal" group idea?????

Just read Amick's blog about Clips game which reminds us all that the 3 new guys, Landry, Dorsey and McGuire had not one practice with their new team mates before the game. They did some walk-arounds and talk-arounds apparently in Staples earlier but no practice. Given that, I was impressed. Just an idle thought now that my body and head have recovered from the Staples Taliban assault on our group Saturday night.

I think next year he won't be getting all the attention, and will be able to focus only on basketball.
i am sure it helps to get more fans when he is doing this meetings, and marketing the league to the jewish population, but next year he won't be a big deal any more and will be dealing only on basketball.

I don't know about Hawes. I seems that this kid is not going to improve. To be fair, though, he's still young. Hopefully he has a good final 1/3 of the season and he bulks up in the off season.
