Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Sorry, got held up. I'll put them up in staggered sets.

Salmons ( A- ) -- off to a pretty good all around start, but it wasn't an impact first half. May have slowed Parker somewhat after being switched over onto him, but didn't lock him up. And otherwise was more solid than spectacular. But John came back and had a stretch in the early second half when he was easily the best thing we had going and was carrying us..carrying us to an 18 pt deficit, but not his fault. He was the one guy playing at that point. And came on with another spurt in the early 4th with some dynamic offensive play to push us right to the brink against the Spurs. But got quiet late, and hence the minus. Still a very strong game, and just about the only King to contribute in both halves.
Thomas ( B+ ) -- used his speed in the early going to score, and not sure what to say about his defense on Duncan because Duncan was just...well bad. And invisible. Same Duncan who lit Kenny up for 35 a couple of weeks ago. Odd. Kenny's doing? Eh... But in any case, this time Kenny was outscoring him at half and Tim just looked very flat. So has to go on Kenny's ledger at least to some degree. And Kenny also came out in the third very active on the glass -- maybe the most lively we have seen him this year. But slowed down thereafter as the Spurs pulled away, and with the effectiveness of the Miller/Corliss combo in the late game getting us back into things KT never returned. I'm wary of grade inflation for what turned out to be just another loss, so go B+ with a golden "?" over the effect on Duncan (who based on this one game could not score on either Kenny Thomas or Brad Miller and won't be headed to the HOF anytime soon).
Reef ( B+ ) -- good first quarter offensively -- was being guarded by Oberto, not Duncan, and made the Spurs pay a bit. Finished with a solid 9pt 4reb 1st half. Did little after half however and after Miller took over it sparked a moribund Kings offense, and so that was the last we saw of Reef. Again, B+. Similar reasoning. Played only half the game, but was effective int he early going. And finished wiht 11 and 4 on 5-7 shooting.
Martin ( A- ) -- Two very distinct halves. For about 2 1/2 quarters pretty much got his butt kicked out there and looked almost pouty -- it was reaching the point of alarm bells, not least for my various fanatsy teams. Was he this easy to figure out and shutdown? In any case, whether it was a sign of respect or merely because of no Ron, he was being smothered by Bowen on one end, and lit up by by Tony Parker at the other (although not all of that was his fault with a lot of it opportunistic, off of rotations etc.). In any case after Kevin got torced for 10 pts in about 5 minutes, we eventually Salmons switched over and things improved. Kevin was at least getting on the glass early, but things did look grim. However I was glad to see us come out of haltime and immediately try to get Kevin a shot. Was pretty minor, but he managed to draw a couple of fouls, and was at least a little more in the game. But the real turner that woke him up was courtesy of one Bradley Miller, who resurreected the Peja offense (off ball cuts) and high post passing of the Vlade/Webber era and hit Kevin with a series of laser passes. And from there on out, the game changed and Kevin was off and scoring. He didn't drop all of his points on Bowen -- as usual there were a number of leakouts and whatnot, but in the 3rd and 4th he was routinely making shots even with Bowen on his elbow, and the energy picked way way up. In a lot of ways his first real stint as a number one option. Or at least first effective one. Wasn't easy -- leak outs aside he had to work for his points. But he got them, and that was very promising. Not enough in the end, but something to pocket from the Texas sweep. Gets the minus for the poor first half and shaky defense, but if we pull this off I would have been hard pressed not to go with straight A.
Bibby ( D ) -- man, what an ugly game for Mike -- just looked completely off kilter and was just forcing up total garbage again and again. Not even close on it either. Finally warmed up in the late second quarter with a little 3-3 streak, and his offense was a breath of fresh air as he pulled us back close. But then cooled again and it was back to ugly. Also in the early going got the easiest defensive assignement on the floor checking Bruce Bowen, but kept on leaving him open in the corners for his favorite threes -- would have thought Mike would have learned something from last year's playoffs. In any case, Bruce Bowen of the 6ppg scoring average rained 23 on us, almost all of them from that one spot. Meanwhile Mike continued throwing up wild shots in the 4th helping to scuttle our comeback. Besides one nice pick and roll with Brad, it all looked scrappy. If we could just find the real Mike somewhere, maybe we could steal one of these someday.
Miller ( B+ ) -- grabbed a few boards in his first half minutes, but not much else, but it was his third quarter after replacing Reef that was finally exciting. It was vintage Adelman era Brad as he carved the Spurs up for about 6 minutes with his passing, and in the process got Kevin going with pinpoint passes inside for layups. Also played stout defense against Duncan in the 4th, although of course Duncan looked decidedly bland most of the night Was tempted to give him an A- as the player who really turned this one around for us I thought, but just didn't do enough after the burst there to truly justify it, and made some shaky plays down the stretch to knock it bakc half a grade. But it was an important B+. Without him, I'm not sure we avoid the blowout, not sure Kevin ever gets going, not sure we don't come home on the back of back to back spankings in Texas.
Price ( INC ) -- did little statistically in his short first half stint, but actually looked solid and competed
Garcia ( B- ) -- hit one in rhythm open three, did little else in the first half. Added some good hustle in the third to help us jerk and twitch back to life, but also made some dumb fouls to hurt our momentum.
Williamson ( B ) -- in the second quarter grabbed some boards, but mostly an ugly first stint full of turnovers. But in his second half stint joined Kevin in taking advantage of the Brad Miller sighting to help pull us back from the brink of blowout with active offense in the late third. Was active thereafter as we battled down the stretch, even got on the boards, but made mistakes down the stretch that helped finish us.

I'd like to make the first award - the "Foot in Mouth" trophy to Jim Kozimor who made a comment about trying to move in on Eva Longoria while she and Tony Parker were split up. I'm sure that one comment is gonna go over really well at the Kozimor home.

;)

I don't think that Kozimor's wife is really watching:eek:

Martin & Salmons A's..Especially since they didn't realize Martin was the best player on this team untill the end of the third quarter...
Salmons was amazing.

Nice effort by the Kings tonight -- even when they were down quite a bit it still didn't look that bad. Playing the Spurs on the road without Artest... I mean, you're just hoping it's not a blowout. And they were within spitting distance of a win.

John Salmons -- tremendous, tremendous effort. It looked like Parker was going to go for 50 as Martin just couldn't keep up with him and couldn't fight through the screens, and then Salmons switched onto Parker and completely took him out of his game. On the other end he scores 20 points with all of his little bit of this little bit of that. There were times when he may have looked for his own shot a bit too much, but you really can't argue with the end result - 20 points on 10-17 shooting. He continues to look like a brilliant addition.

Pretty disastrous game by Bibby. There was a stretch in the third and early fourth when, shockingly, he stopped shooting, and wow, Kings went on a roll. I mean, he's already hurting you going into the game because he can't guard Parker. So his only assignment on defense is to stop Bowen from shooting threes. Um. Whoops. The only thing that saved this from being an apocalyptic game was that stretch where he kept the ball moving and, you know, stopped taking bad shots. But otherwise, not great shot selection, lots of fast breaks for the Spurs off of long rebounds, and atrocious defense.

Ok, look. I like Corliss, you like Corliss. He's a nice guy. It's nice when he comes out and addresses the crowd on the mirophone at the beginning of home games. But Corliss has no business at all playing big minutes in the NBA when all of the Kings bigs are healthy. He is just badly, badly outmatched out there. In the first half he was all turnovers and bad defense. And he blew it in the last minute with that illegal pick and horrible defense on Oberto. That's your ballgame. It's not even as if Shareef and Kenny were playing poorly. Just because Corliss happened to be on the floor when the Kings started turning it around did not mean he was the REASON the Kings started turning it around. But he got all the minutes down the stretch. I just don't get it.

In the first half I started worrying that Kevin Martin was hitting the third year wall or something, just did not look into the game, didn't have spring in his step, but it turns out all he needed was Brad Miller. Martin plays almost pathologically within the offense, and Brad seems to be the only guy who can hit him when he's cutting to the basket. And lo and behold, a few easy looks here, a timely three there and he finishes with 30. Brad shows what it means to get Martin the ball. It doesn't mean pass to him on the wing and run away, it means looking for him on his cuts, look for him on the outlet and all of a sudden Martin is going to have a big night.

Brad Miller means a huge amount to this team, and tonight he showed why. He also played better defense than I've seen from him in two years. Brad, more than any other player, was responsible for the run that got the Kings back in the game. He got Martin back on track, he guarded Duncan well, and he helped the Kings chip away.

Shareef and Kenny both looked good in a bounce-back game for them, but they weren't lucky enough to be on the floor during the big run. Maybe next time.

Musselman -- close games make you look smarter, but I really question the Corliss decision, and you gotta leave yourself a timeout for the last possession. But still gratifying to see the Kings in this one without Artest. And the constipated look was, thankfully, not there tonight.

Post game thoughts

Whatever Salmons had for breakfast needs to become a routine. He dominated the ball too much at times, but overall he was remarkably effective.

Why isn't Miller starting? I may catch some flak for this, but running the offense through him makes the team flow much better on offense.

I can't stand Napear. Too many times he just tries to create excitement. I wanted him to follow up his amazing call of "HERE'S BRAD MILLER FOR THREE" with an equally excited "AND HE CLANKS IT BADLY OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RIM!!" Might just be me.

Is the Aerosmith concert sponsered by Geritol?

Martin's 30 seemed quiet. It is always strange to feel that of a 30 point game.

This isn't exactly scientific, but I think for every 10 times Williamson gets the ball on offense he passes .3 times. Does he know it is okay to pass and there are no demerits handed out for doing so?

And here is what is sure to be an unpopular opinion: I think just getting blown out would be far less deflating than coming back, taking the lead and then losing the game.

Michael Bibby...no more than a D, in my estimation...with or without the 9 assists...5-19 and still jacking up 3's like there's no tomorrow(and I know he was only 0-5 tonight, but it all adds up)...tisk tisk tisk.

Kevin Martin...1st half=D
Kevin Martin...2nd half=A+

edit: oh yeah, and almost forgot...Bruce Bowen= DEFINETELY gets a freaking F!!:D

Musselman said they'd work him back into the starting slot slowly.

It's NOT just you.

Quite possibly. ;)

Luckily, the Spurs didn't seem to notice that much, either. Every time Bowen came near him, I held my breath.

Hrm. Interesting point.

I think it depends. The team right now feels terrible, but I think when they review the game they'll realize there are things they can take away and build on. I'm guessing Bowen might not be invisible in the replays because it sure looked like NONE of the Kings could see him in that corner...until it was too late, of course.

It is kind of a difficult concept, really. But I just got to thinking getting blown out two nights in a row probably would have been pretty crushing to a competitor's ego. So maybe not such a bad thing tonight. Last night, maybe so. Maybe tonight too...I'm having a difficult time deciding how I feel about this now...

And I'm glad I'm not the only one with contempt (extreme in my instance) for Napear.

I think back-to-back blow-outs would have been worse. At least this game had to make them feel like they can compete in the NBA away from home on any given night. Last night it was hard to tell. ;)

1. Brad Miller is ready to start and I don't care who he replaces in the lineup (Kenny or Shareef)

2. The Attempted Renaissance of Corliss Experiment needs to be scrapped.

Let's see, who does that leave as next in line to be backup center?

Potapenko?

Haha, just kidding! Cisco, obviously.
Exactly...and who would you rather see at backup center, Corliss or...Mo Taylor?? Ehhh...wow...not much to choose from here...Greg Kite, anyone??:D

I understand Bozo the one-legged monkey has been putting in a lot of time in the weight room. He says he's willing to give it a try.

Corliss needs to play in the right situation.

Like when the other team is midget-ballin.

Not against Oberto and Duncan and Elson and Horry.

Either K9 or SAR should have been in down the stretch...No doubt about it.

I hear Olden Polynice is ready to come out of retirement...

...As soon as he gets out of jail for playing "Cops" with a fake badge, maybe we can sign him? :o
