Boxscore

Stats: 39min 25pts (10-14, 1-2, 4-5) 6reb 3ast 1stl 0blk 2TO
Summary: Had a "Rudiculous" first half taking, and making, tough tough shots so smoothly. Faded a bit after half.

Gay ( A- ) -- finally finally broke through with a big Rudy offensive game in which he and Cuz in particular dominated the first quarter and insured the Kings jumped out to the big start. As it can be when Rudy is having one of thee games, he was hitting tough shots, long ontested midranger jumper, iso postups, shots that stats will tell you most guys make in the low 30th percentile, if that. But when Rudy gets going, they are silky smooth and everything was wet and barely rippled the twine on the way through. You could tell he was feeling it too as he got more and more aggressive about pulling up for shots where you are going well that wasn't a good sh...oh, ok, guess it was. Was 5-5 before his first "miss", and that only missed because of a good block by Ilyasova I think it was. Along the way added in a good job leading the break and hitting a dumpoff pass to Omri for a layup. The Pistons were pretty determined he not go off again after half, but his going quiet still seemed a little strange given that whenever he did shoot, everything still looked impossibly wet. Probably his most important play of the second half was not an offensive one, but a defensive one, when Rudy Gay, oft tasked for his defense, stepped in to take a key charge at the 5:15 mark after the Pistons had blocked Cuz at the other end and were coming down with numbers in an 8pt game. Not that rudy's overall D was terribly impressive. indeed some shakiness there was what let me make it down to an A- here. It stood out, along with Belinelli's, al the more because on the whole this was our toughest most disciplined defensive effort so far this season, and Rudy I think got confused or lost contact with his guy more than anyone. Nonetheless, the overall effect was obviously a huge positive, and a great sign for us to finally get our #2 weapon back on track. --Brick

Stats: 16min 4pts (2-3, 0-0, 0-0) 5reb 0ast 1stl 1blk 1TO
Summary: played less than it felt like he deserved, but Karl was taking no chances tonight and rode his main vets for big minutes.

Cauley Stein ( ) -- --Baja

Stats: 38min 33pts (11-21, 4-5, 7-11) 9reb 1ast 0stl 1blk 4TO
Summary: Seemed muted at times, but played smart defense and fullcourt offense to outflank Drummond.

Cousins ( ) -- --Baja

Stats: 17min 3pts (1-3, 1-2, 0-0) 1reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 2TO
Summary: Does so little positive, but tried to defend and stay out of the way. Its a living.

Anderson ( C- ) -- just filling a jersey in the early going again, but part of a good defensive performance, and helped keep Jackson from becoming a factor until late in the game. The complete lack of offense eventually became a factor though, going from staying out of the way to actually damaging. Kept refusing to shoot the three ball on kickouts, causing problems. Then finally decided he was going to take a shot, and just suddenly circled in and forced a drive into the teeth of the defense and picked up an offensive foul. Made a defensive mistake late in his minutes too, fouling Morris on a jumper as the Pistons chipped back into the game. He did finally hit a corner three from Rondo to avoid the complete blank boxscore, but to say this was a game of subtle upside would be an understatement. He did the roleplayer thing, and that was what we needed. But that's not to say he did it terribly well. --Brick

Stats: 48min 14pts (6-16, 1-2, 1-2) 11reb 15ast 3stl 0blk 5TO
Summary: And there it was. Why we brought him here. A third star and floor general to control the game.

Rondo ( A+ ) -- I should leave it right there. Just one brilliant display of skill. Second triple-double within a week!!! Rajon was playing his second consecutive 48 minute game and you just could not see any sign of stress on his face. I liked his overall demeanor displaying ice cold reading of the situation all the way down. Rajon is simply a world class passer. His 5 TO's are actually not his fault. He just passes the ball so cleverly that his teammates are not alert enough to catch them. In the second quarter, Rudy missed an alley-oop pass that would have made it a top highlite-reeler. Rajon makes a lot of bounce, no-look and behind the back passes that requires the players to be in focus every second. One of the behind the back passes, to WCS, was lost because of Rajon, because a Pistons player (Drummond, I believe) got his hands in between. Omri missed an easy layup when he was sure that Rajon is going to score (the one that would have given him the double-double). DMC and WCS are getting the grip of it and Willie tipped in a real beauty in the beginning of the game. Kosta Koufos is still the odd man out and needs the ball straight into his lap to catch it. He can't deal with Rondo's bounce passes, pity. Rajon's court view and understanding of the game situation are fantastic. So, passing is definitively his bread and butter. However, he seems to be able to penetrate to the hoop at will and score without being deflected. His acceleration just opens the defense so easily. His not a great shooter, but he does hit the 3-pointer. The unsung story, however, is his rebounding. He is short and not atletic, but seems to always anticipate the point where he grabs the rebound. In a team with DMC and Kosta, he and Omri shared the top rebound score (11)! Rajon had a major part in this win and I believe that he will be the one to get all the Kings involved. --Kingston

Belinelli ( C+ ) -- Marco was out of the picture for most part of the game and didn't hit his shots. Somehow his regular energy level was not there and his game looked a bit anemic. His grade comes from his clever play in the last 3 minutes during which he really helped his team. He stepped up his defense (although I still think he's too far from the player he is guarding). However, the play in the right corner (KCP?) in the last minutes causing a Pistons TO, was very clever. In the final minutes he also hit his shot and the FT"s when it counted the most. Not a great game from Marco, but he stepped up when it counted. --Kingston

Casspi ( B+ ) -- there were several key mistakes here that kept me from getting too wildly enthused about this effort, but the one place where there were no mistakes was on the boards, where Omri did a fantastic job helping us keep control of the glass, and even notably fended off Drummond for a few of them. Early on in this one he took a hard screen from Baynes and went down, leaving Blake to drain an easy three. But he bounced back taking the nice dropoff from Rudy on the break, and he closed the half on a strong note, blocking Drummond off the boards, then getting down court the other way and drawing a foul on him too. A mistake near the end of the third by Rondo and Casspi actually started us down the path of trouble, as rondo passed up a sure layup to get fancy and dump it to Omri, who blew the layup. The Pistons went down the other way and ran off 6 quick points, and we struggled to keep control of the game thereafter. It didn't help when Omri fouled Morris for 3 FTs in the early 4th --Brick

McLemore ( INC ) -- Ben came in with spirit, but his stint didn't last long enough to get an impression where BenMc is going. --Kingston

Really really really needed this win to keep from imploding. Great games by the big three. Really big that Cuz dominates when matched up with Drummond. Wonder if that will get ANY attention from the national media?
I do have one concern from watching this game: The Kings' perimeter defense sucks. Time and time again, they left shooters open or completely unguarded. It's like they were daring them to hurt us with the long ball. And the Pistons do have some good long range shooters. Grant and Jerry both thought the Kings played a great game defensively. I have no idea what game they were watching. Sometimes a good offense hides a weak defense.

Just gives us something to work on.

While our perimeter defense does suck (can somebody except WCS guard the pick-and-roll without switching?) our paint defense was mostly outstanding tonight, along with the general defensive intensity. Cuz was doing his Cuz thing, but both WCS and KK stepped up and prevented easy buckets at different points; those balls don't roll off the rim by themselves. For the first time in a long time it feels like we're really solid down low, but it sucks that our bigs have to constantly bail out our guards. Definitely something that should be focused on.

That was more difficult than it needed to be, but I guess nothing comes easy after a six-game losing streak. The next one should be smoother.

I give the team a B. Fun to watch a win. For a team with a 1-7 record it is a good start. Sure mus make the team, coaches and all feel pretty good right now.

ill give Karl an A+ if he can take this game and build everything around it. Anytime Crazy Karl wants to come up, revisit this game in your head George.

It'll keep us winning, playing a style that works for us and you in a job.

The fact that Rondo was looking for his offense was what made all those assists possible. When Rondo is too passive then this team just doesn't have enough spacing, so its a necessity that Rondo keeps looking for his offense and take the open shots when available just so the opponent has some one to guard out there and not only two players.

The only reason Boogie even posted this through twitter was so it doesn't seem he is a bad team mate. He could of went up to Kosta a number of times and told him my bad about that.
This post can be interpreted a couple of different ways; are people assuming that he didn't?

I'd have to slow the game down and watch all his defensive situations to say he was garbage. I will say his 1 vs 3 break was infuriating, if I recall correctly he also drove to the key for no apparent reason, only reason I can think of was to try and show he could do something which was just as bad.

They need to camp him for the short three, or maybe move if the ball handler needs some help. I don't want to see the ball in his hands at all unless it is to quickly pass it to someone else or he is open for a 3.

What is Anderson supposed to be when he's hitting on all cylinders? From what I've seen he is nothing but a warm body to replace Ben and hopefully light a fire under him. He's done nothing at all to impress.

As long as our PF and SF are the 1st and second option and our PG is ball dominant, the SG position on this team will be a placeholder. So I wouldn't break it down too much. Marco couldn't get anything going either for the same reason.

A lot of props to Casspi for being the team's everyman. Rebounds for tonight. Other times, it's threes.

I felt the team played a slightly different style tonight and it was evident in pace and cohesion at the start. No longer rushing it up court every time or trying to always shoot within 5 seconds of getting the ball. Felt like they were in a gear they were comfortable with, but the trade-off was that they settled into a lot of isos that Detroit finally stopped in the 4th quarter.

Not sure what you were watching. Look, I hardly think that Anderson is any kind of long term answer, but last night in the first quarter he switched onto Reggie Jackson and Jackson couldn't get a shot off. So he did a great job defensively on Jackson. Offensively, he's pretty much a zero at this point, but you have to give him credit for what he does right.
