Omri ****ing Casspi ladies and gentlemen. With our #2 and #3 guys out you knew somebody had to step up, and remarkably that somebody was almost the entire team. But nobody more than Omri who took his energetic bench bunny act into a starter's role and duplicated it over 36 minutes, fearlessly attacking Anthony Davis right in the chest and stealing his mojo. And it was an Omri led run that broke this thing open in the 4th. What a find for us this summer. Guy was almost out of the league, now he's just out of his mind, in the best of ways.

Big win, like many have already been. We lost our #2 guy, but SacKings don't care. We lost our PG and 3rd gun, but SacKings don't care. We're playing the favorite to win MVP, on the road...heck we even lost our coach. SacKings do. Not. Care. We're winning the ones top teams do night in and night out. Makes you wonder how long before you have to recognize the inevitable implications of that.

Casspi ( A+ ) -- you know, there was almost nothing not to like here. I was scanning through my notes and realized that I only had a single negative note for the whole game, and that was when the game was virtually over at the 1:20 mark of the 4th and Omri rushed a fast break attempt into traffic when all we needed to do was pull the ball out and run clock and we win. But up until that point we would never have been in position to win if it ween't for Omri stepping up big as Cuz's new wingman. What added a cherry on top, was just how much of the good stuff he was doing he was doing right through Anthony Davis, as in Davis was his defender and Omri just laughed at the putative MVP and went right at his chest and scored through him repeatedly. His first score in another blazing first qurter for us was like that, just went right at A.D. on the break and swooped right past him for the hoop. He added a good drive. Came around a pick and made a real nice fake pass, opening the lane and going right to the rim. Made a nice little interior pas to Cuz, but Cuz missed the little layup. Just gave us that same all around and flat saavy (Omri Casspi = saavy is one of the real amazing stories of our seasons) boost we've been seeing off the bench, but now he was goosing the depleted starters. And having not 1, but 2 starters, and you can even throw JT in there on defense, who weren't scared of A.D. just had to play into this result. When the third quarter came around Cuz came out of the lockerroom like an angry bear and looked poised to take on the Pels all by himself, but who was it who stepped up to join him after a few minutes and start to open up a little lead? It was Omri of course. And down the stretch of the game, with us holding a small lead but not able to pull away as the Pelicans battled, who wa it who suddenly blew the thing open? It was Omri of course. A honeybadger amongst honeybadgers. he grabbed some big aggressive d-boards, went right at Davis again and scored through him, then got a steal up top and a breakaway hoop, and all of a sudden we were up 14 with 4min to go, and the game was pretty much over. I don't know where this has come from, but just keep on keeping on Omri. Bravo I say. --Brick

Thompson ( B- ) -- JT getting B-! did you watch the game at all. Yes I did, and what a game it was. When you start to evaluate Jason’s game, the first thing that hits you is: What did he do in the game? The guy plays 33 minutes without a point! You can’t evaluate JT’s game like that. He is not there to score. You have to see the big picture. People tend to forget what a great defensive team the Kings is. JT belongs to the starting lineup, because his defensive game keeps DMC in the court in the 4th quarter. JT was keeping the menace, Anthony Davis, at 14 points out of which 6 came from the stripe! That in itself is worth a B. He did very nice work on Anderson as well. JT collected 7 rebounds, one offensive, which is not fantastic, but you got to remember that DMC and Casspi were there as well collecting them. One assist and one block are nice too. I felt sorry for JT, when Casspi passed him a candy for an easy score, but he was fouled (non-shooting foul). One more game for the gray hard worker. I added the – sign only because of little lack of aggressive play in offense. Otherwise I like players like JT, who come to the game for the W and not for the stats line. --Kingston

Cousins ( B+ ) -- It was sort of the tale of two halves for Cuz. If you looked at his total points, boards, and assists, you'd think he had a great game. But then you'd have to ignore the five turnovers and the fact that he played most of the first quarter as though he was sleep walking. He started the game by posting up, and losing the ball for a turnover. After hitting an 18 footer, he then missed two 18 footers in a row. On his next possesion he missed at the basket off a dish from Casspi, fought for the rebound and saved the ball from going out of bounds, but thew it to the wrong team. The next sequence was very strange. Sessions drove into the lane with Cuz standing out at the three point line. One of the Pelicans poked the ball away, and it started rolling toward the Kings basket. Strangely, Cuz just stood there and watched it roll across half court before he seemed to realize that the ball hadn't changed possession, and our shot clock was still running. That seemed to wake up Cuz, because on his next possession he posted up on Anderson, backed him down, spun to the basket and slammed it home. He followed that with a beautiful pass to a cutting McLemore for an assist. A bit later he posted up on the left baseline and hit a high arching shot over Davis. He went to the bench just before the end of the 1st quarter and returned around 7:21 of the 2nd. Isolated against Asik at the top of the key, Cuz put the ball on the floor, drove past him, and laid it in. He followed that with another strange play, when Stauskas passed him the ball at the top of the three point line, and he apparently tried to pass the ball back to Nik, except he threw the ball to where he must have thought Nik was going to be, instead of where he was. Cuz seemed upset, so I have to assume that it was a broken play. Cuz started the second half by posting up Davis and scoring. He followed that by hitting a 14 footer on the left baseline. He then hit a step back 16 footer. After missing another 16 footer, he grabbed his own rebound, was fouled, and made both freethrows. After a series of misses or misses and a foul, he closed out his scoring by getting the ball at the right elbow, isolated on Anderson. He simply bulled his way right through Andersoon and laid it in. So, it wasn't one of his memorable games, but when your center can have, what to my mind was an off night, and still score 22 points, and grab 12 boards, its a testament to just how good he is. A couple of years ago, Cousins seemed to have a sense of urgency when it came to scoring, and forced a lot of shots. He'll still force an occasional shot, but he's far more patient now. First, I think he cares more about winning than scoring, and second, I think he knows the points will be there and he doesn't have to force things. He still had a pretty good game, and we won. I'll take it. I could get used to this! --Baja

McLemore ( B- ) -- Ben did a bit of everything in the first quarter. On offense a steal, goes full court and reverse layup against Anthony Davis! then a catch and shoot 3 from head of key, then a quick baseline move wothout ball, gets pass for two-handed dunk. On defense he had Tyreke Evans for much of the night and shut him down, in the first at least then TE got his 20 by end of game mostly on drives to the basket (big surprise eh?). Had bit of tought time guarding Tyreke in the second as the Pels caught up outscoring the Kings in the paint when Cuz was not in. Both Ben and Nik are in to the 6:00 min mark of the 2nd period when Ben goes out and Nik picks up Tyreke, a very tough assignment. Ben comes in for Landry with 7.3 sec left in half. Bench and a new mix of players let Pelicans back in game tied at 49 at half. Early in 3rd Ben and Tyreke take turns driving at each other getting fouled. Ben's aggressiveness steps up this half on both defense and offense. Ben out for Nik at 4:22 mark who then guards John Salmons and his first encounter with the fish results in nice steal. In the 4th Ben comes back in for JT of all folk at 7:02 mark and shortly Kings are up by 9! Bens defense is getting better game by game. He plays out game. 4/6 with 2 three's, 2 reb, an ast and a steal but improving defense. --Cruz

Sessions ( C+ ) -- Sessions teetered on that ‘poor game, solid game’ line all night. He was in a tough spot to begin with. Collison has been so good and he has been so...lackluster, and now he had to start a game on the road going up against Jrue Holiday and the Pelicans (this time with Omer Asik) and without Rudy Gay as an offensive option. It could have been a lot worse. Sessions did what you would expect out of a typical Sessions game. Almost all of his offense came on drives to the basket, most of which he didn’t finish. He hit a few tough layups, but his offensive damage was done at the line. He was bailed out a few times, but I’ll take it. I thought Sessions played a lot more passive this time out. If you remember his last start with the Kings a few weeks back, he recorded 0 assists. Tonight, he had six, but beyond the raw assist numbers the ball was moving, and yea, I’m going to give the point guard some credit for that. He also contributed to the Kings ball protection. They only had 9 turnovers on the night, with 2 of those credited to Sessions. Not perfect, but one of those things the Kings absolutely needed to do in order to win this game on the road undermanned. In transition, Sessions went back and forth between ‘out of control’ and ‘aggressive’. Sometimes the Kings came away with free throws; sometimes they came away with nothing. His defense on Holiday was nothing to brag about. I thought Jrue took himself out of the game more than anything else. He just didn’t play well. Late in the fourth with the game still up in the air, Sessions hit a huge three pretty much sealing this one for Sacramento. It wasn’t pretty, and at times it was quite ugly, but Sessions was serviceable tonight, and the Kings won. That counts for something. He certainly didn’t make me confident that the Kings could survive an extended period of time without Collison, but tonight? It was shaky, but it was enough. --Mass

Williams ( D ) -- largely out there as a designated Ryan please please don't hurt us again stretch 4, and pretty much sucked at it. I wasn't wildly impressed by his last game, but it was serviceable. This one...was not serviceable. And this one reeked of either a guy trying too hard, or a guy easily impressed by himself. Either way he alternated invisible minutes with little bursts of hero ball, driving right into the teeth of the defense and then just praying. We were shorthanded, but I was still mildly surprised (read: annoyed) when he was suddenly summoned to replace JT, who was very effectively smothering Davis, with 5 min to go in the third. As it turned out my annoyance was misplaced as that was just Corbin setting the rotation up so JT could come back in when it was Cuz's turn to rest, and thus we could avoid anymore smallball frontline disasters. Unfortunately DWill's own game didn't pick up. Got overpowered inside by Anderson, missed a wide open three, and tried a drive at the end of the third and threw it too hard off the glass. Really the only King to have a weak game. --Brick

McCallum ( B ) -- Ray McCallum! It took him a few minutes, but once Ray got rolling, he really got rolling. He had a few really strong takes to the basket right into the teeth of the Pelicans defense. It looked like he was playing with a little more speed than I remember him having. Like Sessions, McCallum was pushing the ball in transition (including one really nice bullet pass to Casspi) and getting to the line. He would add a picture perfect pullup jumper from the corner later, and just looked real solid most of the night. It could have been worse, too, because if you think the starting unit was undermanned, the Kings bench was severely undermanned. Ray kept that unit moving and working. At one point, it looked like Ty Corbin was going to use McCallum to close it out, but once the Pelicans moved back to their zone, Ray got a little indecisive. He couldn’t get the ball to Cousins (passed it into a double team) and stopped being as aggressive with his shot (hesitated on multiple open shot opportunities). Corbin would replace Ray with Sessions, and it all worked out in the end. This was a solid performance for McCallum, though, and a good reminder of what he can do if given the minutes. It wasn’t perfect, but the Sessions / McCallum duo worked hard all night, and quite honestly outplayed the Pelicans point guards when they probably shouldn’t have. --Mass

Stauskas ( C ) -- Nik's first appearance is in for Sessions with :57 sec remaining in 1st period. Both Ben and Nik start the 2nd and quickly Nik passes to Ben on the side for a quick 3. Shortly Nik gets stuck as the 1 on a Pels fast break of 3 on 1 and bangs, OMG its Jimmer! Fouls him. He is learning defense, hudtles all the time and is doing a C+ to B- job in the second much of it guarding Tyrek, a wily vet by now. Near the 4 min mark Nik is stuck with no where to go out in 3 land so pops in a 3 over his defender. The mish-mash of starters and bench lets the Pels catch up and its 49 all at the half. Nik gets back in at the the 4:22 mark of the 3rd and has to guard John Salmons! Wow, the fish, Jimmer and Tyreke, its Deja vu all over again. Nik stays in to start the 4th and dribbles to the key for a short jumper for 2 and few min later gives his man a double fake for a side jumper for 2. Now he is being a bit more aggressive but still passes up couple of open 3's to pass off. JT replaces Nik at the 7:02 mark for height matchup then Nik replaces him at 3:09 mark as Kings up by a dozen. Then he is replaced by McCallum at 1:38 for ball handling and Kings win by 10. Nik still hesitates on offense but is doing quite well on defense staying with his man most of the time

Landry ( B- ) -- against the Pelicans we have run Carl as a mideget backup center with an even migeter "power" forward in DWill. Thus there he was again coming in for Cousins, and yet in a truly pointless display before half, we simply did not use him, and it may have been wise decision as the Pelicans specialize in frontcourt length and Carl was normally matched against 7'0" shotblocker Jeff Withey. Landry stepped up for one good little help defensive challenge near the end of the first, but was simply not involved in the offense in the 2nd quarter despite us needing him as the lead dwindled again. Worse, he wasn't scoring, but he was still 4 inches too short for the position he was playing, and the Pelicans just overwhelmed our runts on the glass. When he returned after we sat Cuz in the final 2 1/2min of the half to save his 3rd foul, Landry did better, Scooping up a loose ball and laying it in, getting a second hoop in the open court and coming up with a good hustle board to give us the final possession of the half with 17sec to go. In his final stint started off playing the low to Cousins high in the late 3rd as Cousin moved outside and fed the ball over the top to Carl in the post on back to back plays. Added a nice pin di\own and quick hit around Anderson in the early 4th while we pressed the lead and finished up with 4 buckets, 9points, the one good hustle board, and not much else. Filled a role, just please no more Landry at center (should be noted however that after half Coach...Corbin adjusted the rotations to keep Cousins or JT out there at all times to avoid the issue).--Brick

If Denver wins tonight then every win we have this year except the one against Minnesota has come from .500 or better teams.

Kind of amazing if you think about it considering how flippin rough our schedule looked at the start of the year. I am looking back at it and wondering how the hell we have 9 (should be 10) wins!!!

Poll question:
Sessions held down the fort well in place of Collison and kept Holliday in check. McLemore was very solid especially early as Kings built a lead. Stauskus might have had his best overall game in getting his feet wet rookie season. McCallum is so fundamentally solid and tonight it was on easy as cake display. Gets into Kings offense right away and displays defensive mind-set, physical stance on every possession that shows knows exactly what it takes. Voted McCallum.

That the Sacramento Kings are actually honey badgers?

This was the true definition of a team performance, especially on defense. Holding them to 89 points and not allowing Davis to have a dunk fest like he did in Sac. What a bargain Casspi has been, I keep mentioning it over and over but they guy really has a good basketball IQ.

I was busy writing my evaluation on JT, but I have to comment the team effort as well. At the start of the game I was kind of uncomfortable thinking that two key players out and the up to now titled soft bench are probably going to struggle against a team that beat you just recently in you home court.

Nothing like it. The feeling was almost eerie. I thought I was watching an upgraded Spurs lineup. Extremely smooth ball movement, super cool decicion making and beautiful basketball. Remember Roberta Flack's album "Quiet fire"? That's exactly what I felt.

You all know the rest, but remember this: Tyrone Corbin was on the lines and the Pelicans managed to tie. Did you see any signs of panic? Just stone cold TCB and here we go again.

What a great basketball game!

I came in at the beginning of the fourth, thoroughly expecting to see that the Kings were down a bunch. Up by five? What?
A honeybadger amongst honeybadgers. he grabbed some big aggressive d-boards, went right at Davis again and scored through him, then got a steal up top and a breakaway hoop, and all of a sudden we were up 14 with 4min to go, and the game was pretty much over.

Couldn't have said it better. I don't know how we fell into this, but Omri was a freaking STEAL. Go, Omri, go!!

#Casspi by himself hustled more than this entire team in the last 4 years absolute MONSTER. MVP of the game
#Ray played like a big Mac 2night making timely shots and hustling his heart out like Casspi
#Cousins, while I didn't like the shot selection I LOVED the passing, to me difference between him and Davis is Cuz makes players around him on offense better.
#JT did his typical contain AD game nothing unusual here
#Mclemore started like a house on fire and Nik backed him up maintaining there flame.
#Sessions was solid better than normal so far this season
#Landry did his thing in the post
#Williams played bad but he actually played hard, for the first time it was not due to a lack of effort.

The way we grinded them was my favourite thing about this game and probably my favorite victory of the season, we just keep chipping away until the lob went timber love nothing more than that.

What a great game to come home to after having to serve on jury duty.

This was an outstanding win. Couldn't be happier with the guys. The only King that didn't play well was D-Will, who was pretty much of a non-entity. Every other King gets at least a B in my book. Casspi, McLemore, McCallum and Stauskas stepped up big-time. Thompson was stellar on defense. Cousins was Cousins. And Corbin was outstanding in his substitutions. Great, great win.

"Honey badger doesn't give a poopoo" doesn't quite have the ring to it (thanks, language filter).

It is strange. I knew going in that Gay and Collison were out, but I never thought that meant an automatic loss. I felt they would compete and have a chance in the end for a win. I could not have been more wrong. The Team came out with a great team mindset and they were able to handle a healthy Pels team handily. I was extremely impresses with how Casspi was able to fill in for Gay. Casspi's energy and hustle was infectious. The whole team was energized by the hard work and determination. Coach Malone was completely right in getting thrown out when Sessions was knocked to the floor and there was no call. Love to see the Coach having the team's back.

Cousins was solid and played better than the Brow. He has outplayed the Brow every time they have met, yet somehow the Brow gets all the accolades. Go figure. They can have the accolades, we'll take the wins. Ben Mac is growing up right before our eyes. He was very good in the first half, and cooled a bit after the half. But his defense continues to improve game to game. His offense is enough to push the Kings from good team to very good team. If Ben Mac is making his shots, the Kings are remarkably difficult to defend. Our inside out game continues to improve. Nik continues to get quality playing time and should continue to get the run he needs to improve his game especially defensively. JT can no longer be judged by offensive numbers. He is a defensive specialist at this point. He does not need to score. He just needs to play defense and rebound the ball. Do the dirty work and allow Cuz to work harder on the offensive end. All in all a solid effort by the Kings. We are already guaranteed a split on this road trip and now it is time to get greedy and go for the winning road trip in Houston. I want Cuz to treat Howard like a rag doll and just beat him all over the court. Double team Harden and they can take this Rockets game as well. GO KINGS !!!

When you say accolades ... do you mean maybe, player of the week honors? Or recognition on the NBA.com homepage (Cousins outduels Davis), or ... this article that has the Kings as #2 on the better than expected list, which also says "Cousins is looking like a surefire all-star", and "Anthony Davis leads the Pelicans, and the league, in player efficiency rating at 35.8. The next closest player in the NBA? DeMarcus Cousins, with a player efficiency rating of 27.7."?

I'm still trying to understand how people think Anthony Davis is getting ALL the attention and nobody is realizing how well Cousins is playing

Hilarious how when the Pelicans beat us the media headline was Davis outplayed Cousins (which he didn't) yet when Davis gets stomped by JT and Cousins clearly plays better not a peep on that subject but rather Cousins "leads" Kings to win

NBA.com has "DeMarcus Cousins (22 points, 12 boards) outduels Anthony Davis in a 99-89 win...

I believe Cousins is a victim of the East Coast Bias that permeates the 24 hour Sports News Cycle. ESBPN (East Coast Bias Sports Network) loves to say the Brow is the best young big in the league but they seem to ignore the facts. Cousins just needs to keep playing the way he has been, and the accolades will come his way eventually. Especially if the Kings make the playoffs and the Pels are watching the ping pong balls. All around I believe that DeMarcus Cousins is the best big man in the NBA PERIOD. People are starting to notice the Kings and there is more and more attention being paid to Big Cuz and how he is the centerpiece of a resurgent Kings team that is playing some outstanding basketball.

I've preached about this before, so I'll keep it short, but in my opinion, you can't pay a lot of attention to the national media narrative as a Kings fan. Small market teams don't get the same level of attention, and never will. Compare how much attention the (NBA champion) Spurs are getting compared to the Heat, the Bulls and the Cavs. My advice is to try not to worry about it. It will drive you nuts if you let it.

I really think the narrative that Boogie gets no attention and AD gets all of it just isn't true. People keep saying it, but that doesn't make it any more true. People are looking for something to latch onto that just isn't really there. At least not anymore. Perhaps that's an ESPN thing. I don't know, they lost all credibility with me a long time ago.

It was after all, way back two days ago that Boogie was named Player of the Week. I'm not sure how much more accolades a guy can get at this point in the season. He's on every early MVP list (and as the pelicans settle into mediocrity, as I think they will, AD as front runner for MVP talk will die down, if it hasn't already). But how can anyone ignore this opening night from AD:26 points, 17 rebounds, 9 blocks, 3 steals and 2 assists. Should that NOT get attention? I mean, that's one of the best opening nights ever. Of course it's going to put him in early MVP talk. If it didn't, that would be odd, don't you think?

Yet, for all the accolades, AD's player of the week count this season stands at zero.

Both, really, are getting more positive attention than just about anyone. That includes Lebron. There is plenty of attention to go around. I don't think AD or Boogie were getting big attention at all before this year. Leading Team USA to gold when the team was supposed to be a tad weaker than usual brought both guys front and center in the NBA media landscape. It's not like New Orleans is a big basketball or media town.

Hilarious how when the Pelicans beat us the media headline was Davis outplayed Cousins (which he didn't) yet when Davis gets stomped by JT and Cousins clearly plays better not a peep on that subject but rather Cousins "leads" Kings to win

This means that in the national media, it is news when Cousins is matched or outplayed. It's a compliment to Boogie.

Before the Houston game is here I want to get in my two-bits worth on the Pelicans game. Like many of the posters above have spelled out, there many good things to say about the team effort in winning this game with a shot handed crew. Good sound game by all. Good win. Coaches and players deserve special congratulations for pulling it off. Makes it a lot easier to face the next tough opponent on the road. 9-5! Alright!!
