The Kings will need a Chandler type person on defense whether or not those types of players are easily attainable. Look at every championship team in the past except for the Heat with Lebron.

Spurs ('99)-Robinson
Lakers ('00-'03)-O'Neal
Pistons ('04)-Wallace
Spurs ('05 and '07)-Duncan
Heat ('06)-O'Neal
Mavericks ('11)-Chandler
Celtics ('08)-Perkins/Garnett
Lakers ('09'10)-Gasol

Essentially, you surround Cousins with good defensive players, but if your goal is winning a championship, you need a rim protector. Plain and simple. With the way the NBa is allowing players to play defense and with the direction of offensive schemes towards scoring guards, rim protectors are becoming more imperative. I'm curious as to how many point guards you think are available who can run an offense the way you say IT can't and can also spread the floor while playing lockdown defense.
It's not actually about court vision or dribble penetration. IT lacks length and just can't make some passes without a risk of TO. Getting longer ballhandler, which also means on average he's a better defender, is the way to go.
As for rim protector, there's different levels of players, so you need one, want one, but might have to settle for less impactful player. That's why handicapping yourself with bad defenders in the starting lineup for additional offense that is not crucial would be unwise.

Problem is there are not many rim protectors who are also two way players in the league. Unless the Kings find that two way player or McLemore becomes Ray Allen, they need the extra offense from the PG position.

Kings certainly don't need two-way player next to Cousins, though if Anthony Davis is available I'm all ears. Kings need a guy, who can either shoot some from 15-18 feet, or be quick, strong and springy, so he's able to punish teams, if they blatantly leave him open. Kings would have enough offense without IT in the starting lineup and can always get more from their 6th man, position, that IT is perfect for.

Back to my question on this games grade thread........ Did IT have a good game against The Pacers? I've read pages of analysis but did IT have a good game?

If you want a guy who will score a lot of points, it was a great game. If you want a PG who has the capacity to lead a team when under pressure, not at all.

Lowry is a player I do not want.. way too inconsistent and he attempts 2 more shots per game than IT does. The only way the kings will get a defensive minded pass first pg, is through the draft. Most of the PGs coming into the draft are shoot first. I think Jerian Grant is a combo guard who we can look into during the 2nd round. Not playing anymore because of academics

Wonder, what he will do now. He's probably considering his options. More than a month passed, so he might still be trying to find another school. Would be stupid to not go Hairston way otherwise.

IT shoots 2 or 3 more times a game, but Lowry is still a shoot first PG. The only guy I can think of that matches the qualities you search for is George Hill or Jose Calderon(not a good defender though). Imo our best bet is to find a backup with those qualities(could potentially start) and re sign IT who could either start or be 6th man if thats what the coach wants(Malone started Vasquez over IT despite IT clearly outplaying Vasquez through pre season and most every regular season game he was here).

So your paint protector is who?

Until you get cap space in the summer of 2015, there's only two options: massively overpaid guys like Sanders, McGee, Chandler or draft.

Here's the thing. Every team wants and needs a paint peotector. You certainly aren't going to get one for bargain basement price.

If only it were that easy.

Embiid, WCS, and Vonleh. I think it IS that easy. They are all top 10 picks. Wiggins, Randle, Parker, Smart, Exum, and Gordon are probably top 10 picks. That means we hve a 3 out of 4 shot of getting a big defender if we get a top 10 pick. Nothing is a sure thing including all the trade ideas that are posted here and any kind of prediction for the future. I think this is as much a sure thing as any.

I think Vonleh i realistically our best bet, assuming we end up with anywhere from the 6-10 pick range and the bigger talents are gone. Draft Vonleh, keep JT starting until Vonleh develops. Then hopefully when Vonleh is ready to take over, JT's contract is tradeable(or Landry's too). JT and Landry will help a guy like that develop too.

A top 10 pick is a valuable asset, so to respond to your original comment, drafting a paint protector in the top 10 is not getting him for a bargain basement price.

It was actually a term you used. In my mind, bargain basement price means you get something while giving up very little in value i.e low risk bigh reward.

Big men go at a premium price. Anything more than $10 mil a year is a good starting point for a very good one. McLemore makes less than $3 mil per year this year and he was picked 7th which is roughly where we will pick. The 7th pick will make a predetermined salary. Define the difference between $3 mil and $10 mil anyway you wish.

A good way of comparing salaries of big men is to look at the Bucks. Next year Sanders will make $11 mil while Henson will make $2 mil. The draft is the least expensive way of acquiring a big man. We give up nothing unless you mean we could have drafted someone else then, yes, we give up that player.

Sure it is. In fact its almost the only way you can acquire a guy like that in without using up one of your three big salary slots (and that's kind of the way it works out -- three big $10+mil salaries, and then everybody else on the remaining 20mil. You get a pick every year, and you get a piece you otherwise could not afford on a very reasonable contract for years. When you have to pay that guy is when you start having to dump Harden, or Deng, or whoever your third option is.
