Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Wanted to wait a bit here just to hear if Barkley could make me think he was any stupider than I already do, He couldn't as it turns out, but that's only because its virtually impossible for him to sink any further into ignorance in my opinion.

So, onto the game -- yahoo! Best game of the season. Most poiints, best FG%, against a quality opponent, on national TV, and our only legit blowout. And it hasn't come out of nowhere. Back to back games where our two young guns go for 20pts apiece. And those weeks of getting cloes then collapsing, followed by the last week of hanging on for clutch finishes, and now not only hangin on, but stomping on an opponent. Dust off the old neglected Kings gear -- tommorow you can wear it with pride.

Garcia ( B ) -- almost all of Cisco's production took place in the first quarter of this one, and in fact he only saw short minutes therafter. And in the first quarter his entire production centered around a quartet of threes he knocked down -- he ended the quarter 4-6 from 3pt land, and 4-6 from the field. And yet while normally having a big first quarter and then disappearing is a bad thing, I felt that early shooting explosion was quite critical to this game. We had started out shaky, looking like we wanted to compete, but were trying too hard to make everything great -- very likely the result of the national TV game. Everybody but Cisco that is, who almost singelhandedly kept us close by raining in three after three (not that the TNT crew noticed as they yabbered on for the entire first quarter tediously swapping old man stories rather than talking about the game). Had to be a huge confidence boost for us, and with just minor contributions from the rest of the crew we were able to go into the second quarter with the lead. On the other side Melo was more alive than he was last time out, and Cisco never really had him under control, although he was mre effective early than he was late. The threes were mosly nice spot up and shoot in rhythm types, although he did take one really ill advised hero/heat check 28 footer, and after a nice defensive play standing his ground inside against Birdman in the post, we forced the ball to him for another one, and he airballed it. Wasn't on the court to contribute in the second as Reke took the game over and Casspi was giving a nice effort on the wing, and by the time he came back in the third he didn't have much to offer offensively, and lost control of Melo the other way. Added a nice block inside on Birdman late and hustle and energy were excellent throughout.

Thompson ( C- ) -- you know, I'm pretty sure that Furry Alien Marmosets from the planet Bleep stole Jason away at some point during his cut finger related time off and replaced him with a dummy in a Jason suit, and I want the real thing back now. He hasn't given us a good one since his return, and certainly didn't show much this time out. Not able to stop Nene in the post in the early going, and troublingly muscled out of rebounding position repeatedly by the Nuggets undersized earht nover frontline of Shelden Williams and Nene, and a part of why we got our butts kicked on the board early. Back in midway through the second quarter and gave us a little help, doing a better job at controlling Al Harrington, getting a dunk on the break from Reke and running a nice pick and roll with Reke for the final score of the half. More empty minutes to begin the third spelled the end of his night with 6pts and 0rebs (wonder when the last time he grabbed zero rebounds was -- first time this year at least).

Cousins ( B- ) -- for those of you who may have missed it, Big Cuz came to life in December, started averaging about 16 a game, then came Chokegate, and after that silliness was over he has stepped up even further and now is putting in 20 just about every night. In fact given the state of the West's centers -- they were mentioning last night that Nene should by all rights be the frickin' All Star starter -- if DeMarcus Cousins had played like this all season, and if we weren't 8-25, this could easily be your All Star center, and may well be by next season. But this season DeMarcus still has to make everything hard. Wonderfully talented (Webb last night twice repeated a statement from Coachie that Cousins is the most talented player he has ever come across -- think about that), but still so much the unruly and unreasonable toddler. Was erratic in the early going mixing flashes of talent with some wild play. Showed the ability to knock them down outside, but also just bully balled Birdman, bouncing him around at will while powering inside. Shot selection was questionable though as he threw up some wild junk on certain possessions. Then disaster nearly struck as the inner child -- a child that you would really really like to spank btw despite that being passe -- reared its ugly ugly head. We were up 14 at half, started the third doing that inexplicably shaky/ugly thing we do where ball movement ceases and everything becomes one on one forces and turnovers, and despite making a nifty pass to Beno on an interior cut that had the announcers buzzing, Cousins began to get frustrated. And when he does he is just such a child that he literally can't control himself. He traveled, committed frustration fouls, and Melo was cleverly goading him on by talking with him constantly and yanking the kid's chain and all of a sudden Boogie just melted, every call was an emo level disaster, everybody, and I do mean everybody, was being meanies and he wasn't going to listen to anybody, whether it be refs, coaches, players, nobody. He stomped, he pouted, he messed up, and he really destroyed our momentum and peace of mind as the Nuggets roared back to tie it. It was an ugly display, and one that Westphal let go on far too long before he finally benched him, and he did it on national TV just to give all the ammunition ever needed to his detractors. You should have seen the expression on Tyreke's face on one play in the middle of it when he went back on defense. Reke never emotes on court, but this was a very distinct eye rolling WTF man look of exasperation after we'd worked so hard to get the big lead and Cousins went out and pooped his diaper. As mentioned the Nuggets used it all to roar back and tie it up in the mid-quarter, but then a funny thing happened. The Coach FINALLY gave Cousins a timeout and sent him to his room, and the Kings instantly responded to his absence by reigniting and going on another big run to resume control. And when Cousins was brought back a few minutes later he wasn't suckin his thumb any longer, and got back to the business of being a very large adult butt kicker. Took a Beno pass for a big dunk, got a steal, led the break, and found Jeter for the score. And came up with some nifty scores in the 4th as we opened it up and put them away, including a nifty left handed up and under move that Webb had to respect, and a tough turnaroujnd jumper to get to 20pts again. The talent was on display, but man Cuz, why the hell you have to make it so hard? One other note: only grabbed 6 rebounds, and needs to rediciate himself on that end as the increased scoring has been accompanied by a falloff in rebounding of late.

Udrih ( B- ) -- strugged again in the early going, and was just invisble for the longest time. But quietly got stronger as the night wore on, and while all the attention was on Reke, and Cousins, and Cisco's threes, and Webber and Miller swapping "back when I was young" stories, Beno worked his way into a solid game by attacking inside hard and drawing fouls. Had a three and a two before the break, but was otherwise vying for Mr. Irrelevancy honors. But both received and delivered nifty passed from/to Cousins in the third, including the critical "welcome back" dish and dunk after Cousins got back in after the meltdown. Some tough tough drives in the 4th, including one slash through three Nuggets who clobbered him and sent him sprawling in amongst the photographers. Missed multiple open threes in the 4th again on setups from Reke that would have given him his career-tying 13th assist.

Evans ( A+ ) -- yes, this was that rare highly sought after plusser -- Reke really broke out the special sauce for this one. THIS is what we were supposed to see this season, and now that we are starting to get it you realize how much we have been missing. This is also BTW 4 of 6 strong games since mom rolled into town to slap some sense into her boy, and she is welcome back any time. Reke actually got off to a slowish start to this one, maybe trying to do a little too much and while the shots looked Rekelike -- as in real Reke, not sluggish Reke -- they were mostly contested and mostly unsucessful. But he was finding people, including Cisco on a few of his threes, and he had energy from the start against Billups on defense. Back in in the early 2nd and really began to open up the full on package of beatdown skills. Delivered a beautiful drive and dish to Cousins for the monster flush -- drove across the lane, drew three guys to himself as just everybody was trying to contest his expected shot, and Cousins was left wide open. Then next time down the floor just bully balled J.R. Smith right to the rim for a score. And then started dropping in jumpers, which was as wet as it had been off the last three ngihts. Then it was out on the break for slash after slash. LIke I say, the full package was on dispaly here. Started the third with a hard drive in the paint for a score, and started to get those hands on a lot of balls on defense. Was working his *** off out there, and saw him grimace and shake his head as Cousins began to flip out. After we weathered the storm Reke kind of put an exclamation point on our surge to take back control of th game as he took the last shot of the third with a spectacular take to the hoop. Play in the 4th was exemplary as for one fo the few times this yea rboth team and fans got to have some fun; Delivered an absolutely spectacular one handed laser bounce pass to Omri on the break for his 10th asssits of the night, added a coast to coast rebound and +1 finish to just about foreclose any possiblity of the Nuggets making a comeback as it knocked them back 20 down with 5 minutes to go, and added in spectacular spin drive as well. Wrapped things up with 12 assists -- 1 shy of his career high -- on a monster night leading out biggest win of the year. That's how you get that + next to your A.

Bench

ap-04c85e863a8642909c46e106b1806df0.jpg

Landry ( B- ) -- did most of his damage early in this one, as he came in off the bench for a largely ineffective JT and helped steady us with a little burst of inside/outside work. Began to get lit up by Harrington in the late first and early second, although responded back with another power finish inside. Actualy may have made a littel conribution defensively in this one as it seemed like late inthe third, wiht him on Harrington, who hd lit him up, and Casspi on Melo, whoo was lighting him upm that we switch those tow matchups and Landry may have slowed Melo just by being to big for him to bully. Ok in the 4ht -- bricked a pair of FTs late, but it wasd past the point of it mattering.

ap-599320cd156741d8b7d8d3802ec5b84c.jpg

Dalembert ( C+ ) -- active in his first half stints, and came up with a couple of spectacular blocks at the rim as we used him to try to slow Nene after we did not even wnat to try Cousins on him, and JT got lit up. Not many minutes nor much production as a babysitter/fill in guy after half. Surprised that he did not grab more rebounds. Did not feel that way watching it.

340x.jpg

Casspi ( B ) -- another pretty strong and energetic bench effort. Hit his first three to start, and then dropped in another later in the 2nd. Not that the annoucners noticed, as I think we were onto stories about walking uphill both ways through the snow to shcool stories by that point, but OMri was scrapping pretty hard in the in between the threes. In the first half did a good job of harassing Melo as well, but in the third could not slow him any more than Cisco, aside from a flop that Reggie Miller approved of, which pissed me off. Reggie Miller was a cheater, with Kevin gone I don't ever want to see him approving of Kings for following in his footsteps. Good scrappy boardwork as we got the game back under control, and ran the floor and took a laser Reke pass for a final and exclamation point.

Jeter ( C+ ) -- not much statistical evidence of it, bu I felt helped is contol tempo in the second when we blew up for 40pts, hit a jumper, also abused a few times with his size on defense. Added a uncontested drive in the 4th. Was fine.

Jackson ( INC ) -- in for the final minutes of garbagetime, threw in a classless three atthe buzzer

Greene ( INC ) -- wild post move after entering, nto realy focused during garbagetime

Taylor ( INC ) -- a little jumper in the paint at the end of the garbagetime -- for him even the couple of minutes maybe meant something.

The Kings have been averaging 2 wins a month this season, they just got their 2nd this month and its only the 6th! :D The youngins are starting to believe in themselves and more importantly in each other.

Great game, wish I had gone :)

I hope for 3-3 but most likely going to be 2-4.

Man, wish I watched the game tonight. So proud of the team again!

Great game. Probably the most satisfying win of the year because it was against a good team. When The Nuggets came back there in the 3rd I thought, here we go again but The Kings showed poise, didn't fold, and closed out the game. Oh and as on now, they're no longer the worst team in the league. That honor goes to The Cavilers now.

I'm going with 1-5. The same Kings team won't show up on the road I don't think, they should have a chance against one of Toronto, Washington or Detroit. Now, regarding the game that was a beautiful thing to watch. I'm sure we won't see a blowout like that in our favor for quite sometime so I will enjoy this one until we head out East. or should I say starting up North. As long as Reke and Cuz keep playing like they have been, that's all you can really ask for. I don't expect wins, I do expect playing tough and competitive though for the most part.

In the locker room Tyreke just called it "biggest win of the season" for the Kings. I like that plus giving credit to his teams overall effort, as the leader he want to be. Said, Cousins just needs to "keep his head" and all will be good going forward. Now, take all that good vibe and effort out on the road and get some more WINS!

^ with an injured ankle.

so happy for my kings :P but demarcus needs to stop pouting lol. i think two of his fouls today were frustration fouls. other than that. Yaaaaaa go kings!

We should beat Washington - hopefully. Toronto is always trouble for Kings at their place - going through Canada customs and all that. Still, if this team is on bit of a roll, and I think they are - chalk that one up as a road W. Detroit is another relatively weak team that might be another W for the Kings. The rest are clearly more difficult. I'll say 3 wins but maybe against which of the 6 upcoming opponents is very much up in the air.

Don't forget Kings fans - game starts Sunday bright and early at 10am PST from Toronto.

Honestly its looking more and more like the old Tyreke Evans is showing up. Still not quite there yet, his numbers have looked dominant, but he's still not able to burst quite like last year, but he's coming back. Just on that fact alone, and with Demarcus giving us 20 a night, Cisco and Casspi being an awesome shooting core, I'd say the Kings give us 4 wins on this road trip, with losses at Boston and New York. Toronto, Washington and Detroit are all winnable and I can see us stealing the Atlanta game.

Lets see what happens.

You guys are a positive bunch :D 1-5 and I took some time to change it from my original 0-6 thought.

I can't see us responding in a positive manner after such a win, and Torono should be our easiest game, but after such a win I had to give us atleast 1 win :D

Wow, I see people are as optimistic today as they were in the thread were people predicted we would be 11-4 after 15 games...

I voted 5-1, fearing that I was being slightly over-optimistic, but I'm kind of shocked that most people think we will win 2 or 3 games on this trip. I hope the Kings prove me wrong, but I don't see a reason to be this optimistic. Of the six teams we are playing on this trip, Toronto is the only team with a losing record at home (7-10). All the others are .500 or above at home, while we haven't won a road game since October. Again, I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't like our chances of coming back with more than one W.

great minds think alike...

Was surprised Charles used an excessive heavy hand when discussing the Kings tonight he said the Kings have no talent. Yeah well tell that to Denver. On our road trip I say maybe two wins and hope for 3.

He did seem to crank up the hate a few notches tonight. He seemed genuinely disgusted when talking about The Kings.

He's just trying to cover up for his buddy Westphal. It's so transparent. If it was another coach he wasn't friends with he would be tearing him a new one for our record. But with Barkley Westphal will always get a free pass and he will take as big a dump on the players as necessary to protect him.

Also, I wonder what Westphal tells him about our players if he talks about them like that. Does Westphal tell him that the Kings don't have any talent? If that's what he thinks, then what the hell is he still doing here?

Reke had it going. His shiftiness, ability to find open seams, and most importantly finish the way he did last year was back, he was also hitting mid-range J's off the dribble, and I liked the way he posted up guys, drew double teams and kicked it back out to open three point shooters (Udrih and Casspi were the recipient of some of those). Also nice bounce pass in transition to a cutting Casspi for a dunk. This is the Reke I've been accustomed to seeing. Hopefully this will continue, but even the commentators were noting that Melo had tuned out, Denver didn't seem to have much chemistry etc and they had just lost to the Clippers. And he absolutely pwned Afflalo in the matchup, who was rendered invisible and had more fouls than pts (5 to 4). So it could be a one-game fluke if it really appears Denver is reeling, but hopefully this continues. Anyway it's a great game for Evans, and a huge step in the right direction.
