Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well...jeesh. This is going to be a tough set of grades. The team played better...well enough in fact to potentially damage our rebuilding efforts, which are the only efforts that matter at this point. To say that that puts this grader of two minds is an understatment. Actually there is no two minds about it -- I told Cisco exactly where he could put that boo booed finger when he hit the clinching shot in the final minutes. But I will try to keep that out of the grades as best I can. Our boys are fools to the end, but they played much better basketball (with an assist from an incredibly lazy Nuggets team). So I will just attempt to grade them as if I were a Washington Wizards fan at home pumping my fist right now at the Kings boxscore.

Alright, here we go: theme will be er...Dying/Dead Institutions -- The Things That Having Knowledge Of Will Mark You As Old To Your Kids/Grandkids...or something like that. Anyway...

Nocioni ( A ) -- interesting sub given the articles about replacing guys for not hustling. Was that really aimed at Cisco? Or was it becuase of his hand? Or just matchups with the power player in Melo coming into town and Noc being built for the inside wars much more than Cisco? In any case, obviously paid major dividends on its test run. Noc amusingly came out just scorching, lighting up Melo in the early going to the tune of 9 points before the first timeout. After some forced shots, helped key a push to hold off a Nuggets run in the late second quarter. Took him a long time to get on the baords after half, finally breaking through with a reverse layup against the "defense" of Linas, I'm better than Ron Artest, Kleiza. Mixed in a few more over aggressive heat check forces before knocking down a monster three to push the lead back out to 10 with 4 mintues to go after it loked lie we were maybe setting up for another late game choke. The numbers in this one look good, but still may be deceptive -- the numbers will tell you Melo maybe got the better of things out there. He did not. This isn't quite the best that Noc can play -- I have seen him have a few truly ridiculous games over his career. But it was a big performance, and a tone setting one for the team. Winning this game was stupid, but as long as you are handing out grades for how it was accomplished, Noc knocking the Nuggets back on their heels from the opening tip and largely getting the better of it against their best player has to move right to the front of the line.
large_091408-general-motors-2.jpg

General Motors, and really the American car industry in general. Things like GM aren't ever supposed to die. They have just always been there through the lifetimes of everyone on this board. But they got big, they got dumb, costs rose too high, they embraced and became reliant on bigger and bigger gas guzzlers, leveraged themselves to death, and then the world changed. My dad was a Chevy man -- for that brand to disappear would have been a complete shock to him. But even if the magic money fairies find a way to save the Big Three, its hard to see how they will ever be what they once were. By December of last year BMW was worth more than all three of the American companies...combined.

Thompson ( F ) -- look, I have held off on dropping an F on Jason even during games he has struggled partially in the theory he is a rook, partially because he was normally getting just a little somerthing done in some aspect. But he got his butt kicked tonight by a player (Nene) who is simply better than he is right now, and added to the shakiness of a win that could hurt come draft day by being the worst King on the floor. If the ideal situation down the stretch is for the young kids to come up big and us to find ways to lose, tonight Jason came up small and a bunch of guys in their mid to late careers carried the load. JT actually held his own defensively against Nene for a bit in the early going, but got the worst of it in the second quarter, not only being rendered ineffective himself, but taking a physical beating, including one knockout blow to the jaw, Meanwhile Nene started aggressively attacking him and took over inside, and Jason could not finish, clanked a jumper, and got outrebounded by both our guards and our SF. Rookie wall? Who knows, but he's got to be better if he wants to make the argument that we should not draft Blake Griffin in a few months.
newspapers.jpg

Newspapers -- as the world continues to change, the newspaper appears to be headed toward the same sort of quaint retirement as the typewriter. Just as the iconic click clapping of the typewriter is now a surefire sign of a period piece of some sort, the iconic image of a man leaning back in his chair, feet up on his desk, with a paper open in front of his face, will be a sure sign that something is set in the past. There might be a few major papers that hang on for a bit -- the Times here in New York has a shot, maybe the Wall Street Journal, but the internet has delivered the mortal wound, and the changing demographics of a whole generation who gets its news from yahoo will finish the job sooner rather than later. Otherwise it looks like a niche market half a step up from newsletters.

Hawes ( B ) -- well, first off, career high 20pts for Spencer tonight. So yay! At least one of the kids played well. The how of the story is where it gets a little different. You see, Spencer started off the game playing shooting guard. The Nuggets were without Kenyon Martin (and who would have thought that would have made that much difference) and so tried to start the game with two bogs, Nene and Johan Petro, out there. Except Johan is a very limited interior player, and Spencer responded to his presence by simply jogging out to the three point line and bombing wide open three after wide open three -- he hit 3 of them in the space of about 5 minutes to start the game as the Nuggets made him prove it, and then added a 2 off a scramble play. Not much on the glass in the first half, and after the Nuggets decided to scrap the Petro experiment and go small with Balkman instead, he was often outhustled for boards. But he was still able to alter a number of Nuggets shots as they just forced and forced drive after drive in there. Most fo the scoring came early, but did take advantage of the Nuggets smallball to just walk inide for finishes and dunks in the third. Not truly a career night (other than the scoring) and not exactly the way I would prefer it to have happened, but he was effective and caused the Nuggets matchup problems all night.
20080918-082057-pic-229998093.jpg

Investment Banks -- oh, there will be still be investment banks, but the era when names like Lehman Brothers, Merril Lynch etc. meant financial gold is over. Those that aren't bankrupt or bought out are teetering.

Martin ( A- ) -- not at all a typical Kevin game, and that is a good thing. Maybe he heard whispers of all the criticism. Started off the game content to move the ball around. The shot was way off, but contributed assists and while it was never anything breathtaking, helped out on the glass on another of our pathetic rebounding nights. Chipped in a bit in the late 2nd with some offense, but was just part of the party as the Nuggets defended nobody. Stepped forward a bit in the third and hit three threes to help stave off one of the only gasps of effort the Nuggets gave all night and push the lead out. But it was an odd night offensively -- from inside the arc his struggles continued. He still had his failed flop miss, struggled to finish, and missed several short looks that were wide open. From inside the arc he was only 1-8. But from three point land he shot a near automatic 5-7, and that was actually 5-6 before he threw up a heat check chuck. Did little late in the game (other than get posterized by Nene on a monster slam where he went right through Kevin), but did pad the points up with 4 FTs on a flop and then a Nuggets intentional foul. One of those games like the one he had a few weeks back, where he shot only 6-15, where the precious offense did not come easy enough to send Jerry into squeals of pleasure, but where he played a much better all around game and actually helped the team. 7rebs and 8ast from one of the most one dimensional players in the game more than makes up for the shooting struggles.
old_telephone_low.jpg

Phones w/cords -- I was flipping back and forth between phones with cords, land lines etc., but thought I'd just stay small. These..are near dead already. Land lines...be a decade or two probably as all the younger generations brought up on cell phones largely abandon them. In any case, the traditional phone is on the way out and will make another nice anachronistic element when looking back on pop culture of the day.

BJax ( B+ ) -- ran things solidly in the early going, but our push wasn't because of him. Contributed several hustle plays in the late second as the Nuggets tried to get back into it. One of the places where the boxscore is a tad deceptive is in Billups numbers -- the box says Billups came up with 22pts 8rebs and probably had a good offensive night. He did not. In fact while Bobby did little spectacular on defense, he was able to just stay in front of the same lazy slow footed Billups that helped drag down the Pistons in their last few years as opposed to the inspiring leader the Nuggets had the first half of the year. Next thing you know Chauncey will be talking about how the Nuggets will just "turn it on" when it matters. Minutes were kept in check this time out for bobby, and may have allowed him to go all out while he was out there. Certainly outhustled the sad looking Nuggets. Hurt our lottery cause with back to back hoops in the early 4th, including one of several inside flips over Nuggets bigs he had during the game. Got smacked on a big Nene screen down the stretch and came out after the following tiemout and overdribbled us into a 24 second violation -- maybe was too determined to get something bacj himself? Only shots he missed were the five 3pt chucks he insisted on throwing up there, probably figuring why not on a night when nobody else could miss. Only played 23 minutes. project his minutes out to full starters' miuntes, and his numbers would have been something like 16pts 12rebs 8ast and 5 stls.
Phone-Booth.jpg

Phone Booth -- while we're on phones, no more public phone booths. Not quite yet, but soon. No more Superman running into one. Dr. Who is already making fun of the anchronistic phone booth disguise of the Doctor's spaceship. I think even the visionary The Matrix's reliance on its heroes making it to a "land line" will look impossibly old fashioned before too long.

Solomon ( B- ) -- solid first stint as he platooned with BJax. Billups began to work him over on defense, but he finished the quarter with a spectacular high arching flip to get it over Birdman and notch us 35 in the quarter. Little minutes or production therafter.
01_xfiles_1152x870(2).jpg

X-Files/Buffy/Etc. -- I thought of this last night as I finally got around to watching the new X-Files movie. Its just the normal pop culture turnover that has gone on ever since there has been pop culture, but that whole generation of shows that were hip and cool and all that in the late 90's -- X-Files, Buffy, Friends, certainly Seinfeld etc., well they are only a few years away now from becoming your parents' cool shows. Its inevitable, but a kid entering high school this year was not even born when the X-Files started up. So for all of you who have not previously experienced it -- prepare to be labeled old.

Cisco ( A- ) -- got off to the slow start off the bench behind Noc but eventually chipped in a few points here and there and made a contribution with several defelections inside as the Nuggets flung themseves at the hoop. Began to pick it up after half and lead us after most of Nocioni's push was spent. Blocked a shot on Smith in the late 3rd with the bad hand, which drama queen antics aside had to hurt. Hit a critical three in the early 4th after a pair of Bobby hoops to push what had been a dwindling lead back out to 15. And down the stretch hit big shots, including probably the icer in the final minute. I dislike giving three A type grades for what was just a home victory over an obviously flat opponent, but for various reasons they were all I think deserved. Along with Noc and Bobby really provided a hustle core for the team this time (and as I've mentioned, that worries me a bit for the final month).
how-to-drive-a-stick-shift-1385_1.jpg

Stick Shift -- this one has been coming on for a while, but the trend seems inevitable. Beyond high end sportcars the stick has become an increasingly rare commodity, and the whole "can't drive stick" by far the norm. Since my dad had me learn on a stick, on the theory that if you did you could always drive an automatic instead, I find their demise sad. Of course from a practical standpoint they don't have much purpose anymore -- it used to be the theory that somebody really fast on a manual could outperform an automatic, but the super-advanced automatics of today have largely negated that. But it is still a feeling of control, probably a little old school romance, and just having something to do other than sit there stupidly turning a wheel. Ironically if high end sportscars are the last refuge, you could almost see this dying breed become something of an elitist status symbol.

McCants ( B- ) -- probably too aggressive with the gunning (like Bobby did not want to be left out of the three point party), but used his athleticism to cause a lot of problems for Kleiza, blocked a shot, drew a foul, pushed the tempo, posed fiercly. Used his muscle on Melo in the 4th and continues to show the ability to handle guys bigger than nhe is. But he and Cisco together as the ballhandlers began to let Billups get into a groove, necessitating the return of old man Bobby.
large_11-3-STATEN-ISLAND-CITY.jpg

Circuit City, KB Toys, Linens N' Things, Gottshalks -- and all the other retailers going the way of the dodo in our little version of the Great Depression. 20 years from now when we have been reduced to a barter economy maybe your child will pause from trying to swap their goat for some new thatch for the family hut and ask you what the funny symbols on that old plastic bag mean, and you can tell them the story of how their used to be lots of little stores selling stuff before Wal-Mart ate them all.

Greene ( INC ) -- displayed an awesome mixture of Kareem, Magic, Oscar, Bird, and Jordan in his almost 4 minutes of PT.

The Kings As Contenders -- and see, one day you can break out your old yellowed copy of this Sports Illustrated cover to show your grandkids, and after you explain to them what paper is and why there is a picture that's not on a computer screen and/or holographic projection, you can regale them with fairy tales about how once upon a time the Kings were good, back in the days before global warming turned Sacramento into beachfront property.

I will just attempt to grade them as if I were a Washington Wizards fan at home pumping my fist right now at the Kings boxscore.

I'll try to think of something low maintenance to do as a theme.

Being unable to feel like a Wizards fan, I'm thinking "body paint" or "wet t-shirt contests."

Famous Brazilian astrophysicists? A primer on edible mushrooms? Oooooh, I know - favorite ink pens? ;)

I vote Kevin for kicking in with assists and rebouds in addition to the points.

On the other side of this really nice coin (a win) is the play or lack thereof of Jason Thompson. I love the guy but he is getting pushed around big time in every game that has a true PF, a banger, who pushes him around at will. He just looks lost and has that "deer in the headlights" look every time he gets the ball. I want the kid to succeed as much as anyone but the reality is his defense skills are non-existent and his aggressiveness on offense has disappeared for awhile now. Has he hit the rookie wall? At 63 games that is nearly double the amount of college games he ever played in one year. I think he just might be worn out.

The Kings don't have other choices now and he can use the playing time. I think the rookie wall has hit hime and sure hope he can begin to show some progress in the aggressiveness area on Def and Off. Maybe Booth needs to get some minutes to give the kid a rest. Don't know what is on about Diogu as he seems nailed to the bench. All the more to hope for Blake Griffin I guess.

Tonight, Cisco, Noce and BJax were not going to let the Kings lose. Hawes did well in the middle and is improving noticeably now. McCants has game for sure, but Solomon not earning minutes yet. Kevin is Kevin getting his 23 every night and had big bunch of Ast and Reb's tonight to really help. Interesting visual that he didn't look nearly as good as his stats showed but 26-7-8 is an "A" grade for sure. (just wish he looked better doing it).

Best of all was the Kings 21 assists and only 8 TO's. That is fabulous. Shows they gave serious Creds to Coaches ranting on Thursday.

Eh, I don't think it's the start of a winning trend...most of the time the Kings die by the 3, so if that's what we're looking to do the rest of the season I'd say we're on pace to get about 2 or maybe 3 more wosses this year, no worries.

Edit: but don't tell that to Noce, he'll play hard on both ends of the floor, lin or woss...

Don't be 100% sure of that -- we play some crap teams coming up, and I have been growing uncomfrotable with the tenor of some of the games after the new guys arrived -- when you are down amongst the league's crap teams, all it takes is some effort to pick up the occassional win. Normally no big thing, but when you are in a race for draft picks, it hurts. Throw in half a dozen games against the league's other garbage, a few teams coasting down the stretch while our All Stars decided now is the time to scrap and claw, and you could drop 3 or 4 spots in the draft if things go "right", and for what?

And this is why I love Cisco so much, no matter what role he's given he comes to play...

"I'm still going to be Francisco no matter what, whether I'm coming off the bench or starting," García said. "I think Noc is feeling better starting and I think that is big for us. If he's starting and giving us that kind of boost, then me coming off the bench, I'll be all right."

"That doesn't surprise us," Kevin Martin said. "We know how 'Cisco is. He's a warrior on this team. He's the heart and soul of this team. For him to be out there like he is, we applaud him for that, especially in a season like this when you could easily shut it down. That's 'Cisco for us. And that's why we're glad he's on our team."

I think Francisco is a key component to this rebuild. He is showing the kids and rest of the team what it takes to be relevant and he's a great example of heart and effort.

I picked Garcia. Playing with that hurt hand, he still was able to rack up 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks.

Dead/dying things? Appropriate this year with the Kings. :(

Bees? Common sense? Snail mail? The word "please"? Drivers that signal before cutting you off? Pay phones?

Just trying to help. ;)

Well, one thing's for sure, we're not going to lose the rest of our games. I'm hoping for an 18 or 19 win season, not because I want us to win that many games, but because I think it's unreasonable to expect us to lose more than 14 of our last 19 games. It just won't happen. We'll probably finish 19-63. And I convinced myself a long time ago that we'd never get the #1 pick anyways, regardless of our record, so I'm not going to be too disturbed if we don't wind up with the worst record.

I'm not happy about the fact that we won, but looking at the boxscore, it looks like our guys played hard and played well. Not a lot of turnovers, shot well from the field, got to the line often... other than 16 second chances for Denver, the guys played a good game against a decent team. It's not like we beat one of the cellar-dwelling teams that are just as bad as we are, so it's a little encouraging.

Actually, even super-cars are switching over to paddle-shifters, which combine the speed and control of the stick shift (allows you to anticipated cornering, slowing, etc) with the consistency of an automatic. Stick shifts will never disappear entirely, but the fastest of the fast will likely pass them by as well (Ferrari, at least, has been doing this for a while).

If I remember correctly from my oceanography class, it will be the East Coast that will be flooded (with there being no more Florida). California will be mostly dry except the tide will come in at least 2 to 15 miles in deeper than it does now.

Also you're making me feel old with the TV show stuff (Buffy, etc). As long as they keep extending The Simpsons seasons I'll still hold on to my childhood.

Thank god that this will never happen, here in Germany. Or, at least not in the foreseeable future. Too many stick cars still around for anybody to be able to afford going exclusively automatic.

Stick shift = The ONLY way to drive. Everyone else is just a passenger.

Stick shift = The ONLY way to drive. Everyone else is just a passenger.

Drive through Chicago downtown traffic for 5 hours a day and I'll ask you again. As fun as it is it's lunacy in a high traffic city. It will die out. The Twin DSG trans that is making its way to more regular cars (think new Lancer) is head and shoulder above any performance that a manual can give you. All it's going to be good for soon is the nostalgic effect. Shame. Anyway, Cisco.

The most important person by far in the victory was Natt. The Kings played so well I thought it was a college game. :D

The HUGE challenge is whether Natt can get this performance two games in a row.
