Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Well, you can scarcely call a buzzer beating win over the 1-8 Nets on your home floor encouraging, but at least we made it fun. Well, after a pathetic energyless first half at least.

Boxscore

Stats: 19min 5pts (2-5, 1-3, 0-0) 4reb 2ast 2stl 0blk 1TO
Summary: lack of energy as a fill in starter in the first half, but made little plays to help our run after the break

Butler ( C+ ) -- hit a three for our first score, but overall our early play was atrocious and Butler had all the energy of a old man. But earned his stripes, and this grade, after half, when he became one of the roleplayers to step up and assist behind the Boogie/Rondo tandem. Still solid on defense, and he grabbed some long rebounds to close out possessions. A minor contribution, but a contribution nonetheless. --Brick

Stats: 19min 1pts (0-0, 0-0, 1-2) 9reb 0ast 1stl 1blk 1TO
Summary: Minutes were again limited, but may have saved the game with a long armed tip on the final inbounds play.

Cauley Stein ( C+ ) -- Willie only played 18 minutes tonight, and personally, I think he should have played more minutes. He only scored one point and that came off of going one for two at the free throw line. Technically he didn't take one shot in the game. But he did play very good defense. Except for getting there late a couple of times with help from the weakside, he did an excellent job. He grabbed 9 boards, all defensive rebounds. All I know, is that our defense becomes better every time he's on the floor. Too many times when he goes to the bench, we get beat down the floor with our transition defense. That seldom happens when Willie is on the floor. He put his final touch on the game when Karl remembered he was on the bench, and decided to replace Koufos with Willie to guard the the inbounds pass. And it paid off, because Willie was able to tip the ball enough for Rondo to steal it, and that folks, was the ball game. --Baja

Stats: 35min 40pts (13-27, 2-4, 12-13) 13reb 1ast 0stl 1blk 1TO
Summary: played a lousy first half, and then completely exploded in the third and fourth to finish with the monster statline

Cousins ( A ) -- make no mistake about this -- Boogie played a lousy first half, and a particularly crapty first quarter. With no Rudy the Nets were sitting back waiting for him, and then jumping him. And in response there was no energy, just a sluggish frustrated junkball game of chucking up bricked threes or driving right into Brook Lopez's teeth inside to get his shots smushed. To add insult to sucktatude, he picked up his third foul late in the half and went into the halftime break sitting on a stinky 1-10 (yet still having 10 points because Cuz leads the league in FTs). In fact I made a quick note of "this one is on Cuz", because if we had lost it would have been. No Rudy, no Darren, Cuz absolutely could NOT come out the way he did, he had to be huge. And he wasn't. And then the 3rd quarter came around, and I might as well have just thrown away all the preceding notes entirely. It all started just about the time that the brilliant basketball minds of the Kings broadcast crew suggested that maybe Rondo should start freezing Cuz out and stop passing to him. And then Cuz suddenly drained a three. And Rondo, not being quite as bright as our broadcast crew, decided to hit Cuz on a long quick hitter, and then start feeding him again and again. there was another jumper, a drive, and suddenly Cuz was off and just in I will destroy mode, raining in shots everywhere from the 3pt line to the rim, and getting to the line again and again too. Not only did he pour in 21pts in the quarter, he poured in 19 in the space of 5 minutes. And after sitting for 5 minutes, when he returned to the fray in the 4th he hadn't cooled down. the Nets had no answer for him. But the refs did, Blowing not one but TWO charge/block calls involving Cuz, one on either end of the floor, and setting up his early exit in the final minutes. A departure we barely survived. Quite frequently I will weight in a bad first half in a grade, because the whole game matters. But when the whole game in question in 40pts 13rebs on .611TS%...um no. The extent of my nose wrinkle becomes leaving off a plus.--Brick

Summary: Got the start, and again did we had so little energy he may have lost his spot

Anderson ( INC ) -- see the mini-description above. About the only other thing that can be said is that maybe we could have used his thick body when Joe Johnson began to bang Belinelli around late in the game. But a roleplayer without much energy isn't going to get much leash. --Brick

Stats: 44min 23pts (10-19, 2-4, 1-4) 10reb 14ast 2stl 0blk 4TO
Summary: Three triple doubles in a week, almost as good as Ray McCallum, right Grant?

Grading Note: our semi-professional grader in this case, the brave Capt. Fact, appears to own a particularly perverse DVR player that may in fact be a Lakers fan, and which recorded the crapty first half, the crapty final minutes, but somehow left out all the good juicy stuff n the 3rd and 4th quarters. Accordingly he can only grade what he saw. While I think if he had seen the rest an A- or better is likely, Capt.'s notes about the finish of this one are significant -- one downside of the close was that for the first time Rondo's FTs became a liability in us trying to close out a game, as we couldn't just have our best ballhandler/leader just handle the ball because they started intentionally fouling him. And it kind of worked. Which means in a copycat league we'll see that again.
Rondo ( B+ ) -- It's tough to give a guy something less than an A when he notches a triple-double while gutting out 44 minutes in the face of an ineffective backup, but in this case I think it might actually be deserved. But, just to cover my fanny, I'd like to declare that due to some sort of software SNAFU, my DVR stopped recording with three minutes left in the first half and I only managed to catch the final two minutes of the game on the replay - so maybe Rondo's second half looked better than his first (he definitely must have shot better). To me, Rondo looked gassed in the first half (and why shouldn't he?) He was making great passes as we've come to expect, and he was tenacious on the boards, but he was missing layups, he bricked a three, he was a step slow and he was not getting really back on transition D. Then at the end of the game, Rondo nearly let this one slip away, going 1-4 from the free throw line and then turning the ball over on the inbounds with 1.9 left to give the Nets hope. Fortunately, Willie Cauley-Stein ensured that we would not get Grizzed again with a convincing deflection on the inbounds and Rondo chased down the tip to seal the game. --Capt.

Belinelli ( C+ ) -- there's an old Disney ride called Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Primitive and old school, at least last time I saw it, but for some reason kind of fun if you're a kid. Well, this game was kind of Mr. Belinelli's wild ride. And it started off as pretty much Mr. Belinelli's sucky ride as all three of our normal main benchers -- Bells, Kosta and Omri -- were adding to our woes by struggling badly -- at one point I think they were a combined 6-26. Bells only notable sequences in the first half were on back to back plays with Ben, on the first Bels spotted him in the corner and hit him with the pass for a three, and then Ben returned the favor, and Bels even got fouled on his own make. Still, I think he started 2-10, it was a fugly struggle. But with other options exhausted, and with Bells' experience, we stuck with him. And late in the game that paid off in a big way as he hit big shots for us when we needed them, including a second And+1. On the flipside, the corpse of Joe Johnson began to finally get going and take advantage of his strength edge down the stretch, and things remianed nip and tuck until the end. --Brick

Stats: 19min 4pts (2-7, 0-0, 1-1) 7reb 0ast 1stl 1blk 1TO
Koufos ( C ) -- I don't know, Kosta just seems determined not to inspire. He was out there for extra Lopez help, and in general the Lopez defense worked. But with Lopez accounted for we should have physically dominated a team who's only other "bi" is Andrew Bargnani, and Cuz excepted, we never did quite slap them around like that. And part of it was Kosta, who just never looked comfortable, continued to miss little chippees around the rim, and hwo fumbled several rebounds (despite overall solid work on the glass). It was just this side of poor, but we won, and that has a tendency to smooth out memories, and grades. --Brick

Casspi ( D+ ) -- Not a particularly good game for Omri. He played 21 minutes and scored 5 points on 2 of 9 shooting. He went 1 of 4 from the three. I guess he was due to come back down to earth. I think he was leading the league in three point shooting prior to the game. Omri is usually a good rebounder, but tonight the ball didn't bounce his way as he struggled to grab 3 boards. I believe he only had one turnover, but it was an ugly, lazy, inbounds pass that I could have picked off. For the most part he played pretty good defense, and certainly put forth the effort. But hey, we got the win, so I'll excuse his poor shooting for one game. --Baja

Curry ( INC ) -- Curry gets a mercy incomplete in this game. He came in to spell Rondo early in the second quarter and the Kings offense immediately bogged down, scoring a grand total of two points in his four minutes (that's on pace for the team to score 24 points in the game). Fortunately Rondo is made of Flubber or something and Curry didn't see the floor again until a brief and inconsequential appearance at free throw time. Come back soon, Darren! --Capt.

McLemore ( A ) -- Ben was legitimately good this game. Really good. I've seen the game described several places as out of the blue, and I get that -- Ben was good this game because Ben played nothing like Ben plays, But on the other hand, for nightly Kings viewers, Ben actually flashed a bit of this same stuff against Houston. It was only for limited minutes, but that performance truly was out of the blue with Ben suddenly showing saavy and confidence, dropping sweet dimes, making smart plays, and in general not being Ben. But tonight he did all that and flat knocked down his own shot as well. I'm of the general opinion that Ben has sucked for 2+ seasons around here, shown precious little feel for the game, and that those that don't think so have allowed their desire to see him succeed to elevate such bare minimum mundane necessities such as "sometimes hits wide open shots spoonfed by teammates", "stays in front of his man" and "gives you one big game in 5" to the point of virtues. But make no doubt about it, that stuff did not apply tongiht. Tonight is what a truly good SG looks like. A guy making the right play, the right pass, the right cut, and hitting his shots. Was he Manu out there? Not quite. But then again he also was not at all Ben McLemore as we've known him, and that's a good thing. Without him coming in and stepping up in a big way off the bench, we don't win this. --Brick

Acy ( B+ ) -- and finally we come to Quincy. And its not there in the numbers at all. You look at the numbers and its the same ole unproductive tween forward. But last night Quincy also chipped in, coming in off the bench next to Ben and finally being what he was supposed to be too. He made a couple of excellent defensive plays in the midst of the Boogie explosion, stumbled a bit as the lack of offense caught up to him with a couple of poor offensive turnovers. But he recovered for the big Acy dunk to close the 3rd, and kept right on hustling into the 4th, getting back to break up a Nets break in the early 4th and continuing to play stout defense, even against the much bigger Lopez. he lacks talent, still lacked boxscore productivity, but the sort of defense and hustle he displayed this time out could absolutely earn him an important role if he can duplicate it. And it certainly earns him a much higher grade than "3pts 1reb" sounds like it would. --Brick

Shot ourselves in the foot to trail early, check. Missing Rudy Gay, check. Screwed by the refs big time, check. Lopez plays dirty trying to get under Cuz's skin, check. The Kings win anyway, Wait what?!?!? Monster game by our hero's Cousins and Rondo. One of the best Kings wins I have seen. We may have turned the corner.

I had to vote for Ben, but it could easily have been Rondo or DFC...and that's a nice conundrum to be in.

Ben is bouncy and quick and has a pure stroke and once he gets his confidence and plays a little bit stronger he can be a real player in this league. Year one he was too weak. Year two he was stronger but not strong enough. Year three he hasn't looked any stronger to me but maybe he just hasn't shown it yet. It is inconceivable to me that he should be losing minutes to James "Ho Hum Who?" Anderson! Hopefully tonight was coming out party and he is on his way to regaining his starting spot. Actually I don't care so much about him starting and if he gets his confidence back against back-ups then roll with this plan and maybe start him in the third quarter instead of the first.

With recent draft BUSTS of Jimmer and T-Rob we can NOT afford another bust with Ben. Tonight was the first time for renewed optimism since I don't know when since he was pretty crummy in pre-season too. I still have faith especially when he gets that first jump shot or lay-up to fall.

I fully expect Cousins to dominate at some point. Hell, even Rondo is giving triple doubles out like Oprah...

But Ben?... hell, he definitely gets my vote tonight! Great effing game!

I'm going to sleep good after those two beautiful kick out passes to Marco tonight (both possessions would have surely been turnovers a week ago). There is hope.

GO KINGS!

You always expect Big Cuz and Rondo to be spectacular but Ben Mac gets my vote tonight! Let's hope Ben keeps this level of play against Toronto this Sunday was well.

I was there tonight, and while triple doubles are sexy, and Rondo should be a serious NBA player of the week candidate ... tonight DeMarcus did whatever he wanted. He gets my vote. Terrifying to have a guy that big who you have to honor his pump fakes at the three point line... what a handful.

Ben was terrific too - made some heads up plays where he previously would have tried some ill-fated sports center dunk but instead made the extra pass.

We spotted them a dozen points or so and it was bad that we let it be a nail biter - but there were moments when the Kings looked really good on both ends tonight.

Yeah Ben was really what we've all been wanting him to be lol such a nice surprise to see him do well! I may be very critical of him at times, but I feel most of it has been justified thus far. Hopefully this wakes him up a bit and we can get back to that Ben and Marco 2 guard rotation! I am certainly not a fan of Anderson, good defensively and strong but his shot just does not look good from 3 or anywhere else on the court.

I had to vote for Rondo, not because of the third triple double (but that was freaking awesome!) But because in the second quarter when nothing was going right he just flat refused to let the team fail, that is what champions do! There is no way to tell how much impact this had on the rest of the guys but I have to believe it was inspiring and helped make the difference in the team going into the third quarter. Ugly gritty win but will gladly take it.

Karl acknowledged Acy and Ben as being sparks and fully agree. Maybe Ben earning his starter job back which will help due to lack of real help from Anderson. Went with Rondo as his iron man performance with depleted Kings is all the more amazing. Once they started playing real defence and they started scoring. Now maybe they will begin to see the correlation more frequently.

Quincy literally had the defensive game of his life he was the Lopez stopper tonight and Cuz/Rondo just went god mode. Ben finally contributed in a positive way and was making correct choices non stop which is super rare. WCS did a lot of good things with deflections and rebounds but man Cuz/Rondo were on another planet tonight.

The 3point shot on Cuz has actually made a big difference in particular when he's struggling around the rim so far this year. That transition pull up 3 where Rondo stops at the top and just flips in back looks good every-time sort of looks like the Nash to Dirk back in the day.

boogie loves rondo so much. He expressed so much before rondo was here. Vlade did well, at the end of the day Demarcus has so much respect for Rondo its not funny. If you asked him right now who he wanted to play with as a PG he would no doubt say Rondo and this is even if the latter was on the Celtics.

I hope we have years to come of this, if not im thankful just because of the fact that Rondo and Cousins are the cornerstones of a very successful offense. Add Gay and we really are a top 8 talent in the west and guess what top 8 = playoffs. Boom. and right now whats without DC.

boys and girls we are as close to an elite big man/pg offense as you can get

I award the "unsung hero" of the game to Acy - I just watched the game a second time and his defense and hustle was a difference maker, in my opinion. If he was not hustling over to double team someone, he was getting his hands on the ball of his opponent. Although the box score only credits him with 2 steals, it seemed like he alone was responsible for at least half a dozen strips, takeaways, steals... (would seem he may have earned some minutes or at least a little more consideration for playing time in certain situations).

I would be up for Acy getting some of Rudy's minutes at the 4. Not to have Rudy's minutes reduced, just prefer to see him log them as a 3.

Kinda like that idea. However, that leaves the 4 in the hands of Kosta/Willy/Acy, none of which is a good 3rd scoring option unless......Ben can finally step up and contribute his 10-15 a night. Last night a start so lets see if Ben can make your idea happen.
