[Grades] Grades v. Mavs 2/9/11

You know, 2 guys scored 20 of our 27 pts in the 4th quarter -- Reke and Daly. Cousins was gone. Landry never showed up. Beno was bad all night. Casspi was a non factor and was coming off that flub just last game. Point being, who else BUT Reke to give the ball to then? Unless you want to suggest giving it to Daly as your goto guy to tie the game. Reke is not only your main guy, but had 9 assists on the night too. He absolutely SHOULD have had the ball. The problem wasn't who had it. It was the decision he made with it.

I think thats what most of us are irked about. You have to hold players of Reke's caliber to a higher standard. He is one of THE guys moving foward. You dont want to see your franchise player making 3 dumb, predictible, plays in a row with the game on the line. As was mentioned by a poster above, you arnt going to draw a foul in the final seconds. Refs dont call that. How annoyed did we all get with Kevin Martin for using the same tactic in the end game?

Reke is very young though and young players make young mistakes, it is just frustrating to see him make these horrible plays almost every game. I think the 20/5/5 chase may have hurt his team game development, and who knows what he is working on in practice. I honestly think that with Reke, he could either end up being a borderline allstar player, or an HOFer...And it will all come down to his BBIQ.

Anyways, if there is one thing this Kings fan has learned over the past half decade of horrible basketball, it is patience. I'm in no way going to make a final judgement on a player as raw as Reke when he isnt even finished with his second year yet. Year 4 or 5...Thats when we'll have a better gauge on who he is going to be as a pro for most of his career. Hopefully the jumper and BBIQ are improved by then.

y'know... being an eastcoast fan (and also gainfully employed), i often can't watch an entire west coast game that starts at 10:45pm.

so i keep on seeing snippets of games. In this case i saw the third quarter. the kings have looked GREAT during ALL the stretches i have seen in the last 3 or 4 weeks. Therefore, I think i doing my part. Wtf are the rest of you doing during the portions of the game i CAN'T watch? y'all are really letting me down, and not doing your part. I am disgusted by your lack of production.

I'm in Sac and not limited in viewing time like you are. I understand your gripe. I have let you down and I'm going to do my darnedest to get better and make it up to you. You keep on doing your part of the game and I'll work hard on my part. Go Kings!!!!!!

We always do better offensively when our opponent doesn't know who's going to take the next shot. I know it's hard but the KIngs need to learn to go for the win with team play not one-on-one. Do two things in the last five minutes, make the team play, and trust the shooter whoever he is.

Hooray for GGG! Well done. I like most of your choices, but I adore Ewan McGregor, too! :)

It's funny to be reading some of these comments. Back in the Vlade/Webb days, so many people, Kings fans or not, criticized the Kings for not having that go-to guy on the team. Webb bore the brunt of that criticism, too. Many thought it was the team's fatal weakness, even though the guys on the team said they trusted whoever took the last shot. Now everybody's complaining about a guy who might very well develop into that clutch go-to guy, given time to mature, learn and improve. Can't please all of the people, all of the time. ;)

Do whatever it takes to give the team their best chance of winning. From what im seeing this season, I dont think that means going to Evans because its way too predictable, and hes too one dimensional at this point in his career. Players like Kobe and Durant are the go to guys for their team because they have a high level of individual talent that gives their team their best chance at winning. I think it has more to do with making a good decision as a team, than simply "going to their go-to guy". Kobe and Durant give their team their best chance at winning the game if it comes to the last shot, thats not an individual decision, thats a team decision. That said i really dont think it is the best decision to be going to Tyreke at this moment in his career. Itd be better to get the whole team involved, and make smart decisions, than to simply go to a player because he's supposedly "our guy". Maybe further down the stretch, when Tyreke has shown to have the talents to close out a game he could be the guy.

This might even be supporting a bad habit for Tyreke: the notion that its ok to make bad decisions because thats what the coach wanted

Edit: Just to clarify. That doesnt mean i dont think Tyreke should be the guy with the ball. He should because he can create for other players. I just dont want to see him trying to singlehandedly go against multiple defenders to win the game.

I think many people are expecting way too much out of very young players. Reke mad a bad decision, but with Cousins out of the game, the only other really decent player out there was Dally. I sure don't know what's up with Beno in this latest stretch of games, but it'd be nice to get more out of him.

... I think the 20/5/5 chase may have hurt his team game development ...

I've heard this argument several times in the last year, and while maybe it has some merit -- maybe -- the wrong time to bring it up is after a game where Reke flirted with a triple double, where the second best offensive player of the night was an offensively challenged shotblocker, where the best low post scorer got ejected on a BS technical foul, etc.

I don't think the issue was his ability to play within a team, get his teammates involved, etc. The issue is that he took bad shots at the end of the game. I think we're overcooking the impact of the chase last season.

As for your comment about his shot, yes, that has to improve in order for him to become a great player. It must. That would cure the over-penetration right there by itself, and adds another weapon to his arsenal.

Don't forget where he couldn't guard a 5 foot 6 guy (JJ), 6 foot 2 guy (Terry) or old as moses 6 foot 4 guy (Kidd). They all torched him. And soon as he was on Marion they went right at him in the post.

But I think the most disappointing part was JJ getting 2 offensive rebounds that went right over Evans head in the 4th quarter. No box out, no attempt to get the ball.

I don't think were in disagreement. I believe I stated that I didn't blame Tyreke, and that we had no other options. My point is that if we had other viable options that other teams considered a threat, it would make it easier for Tyreke to get to the basket, and also give him someone to kick the ball to. The only outside threat we have is Casspi, unless you want to count Beno, and neither are consistent. At least not right now. But to be honest, I wasn't just focusing on the last play of the game, but the big picture going forward. If you add a couple of guys like Kirilenko and Terry, it might not come down to the last play of the game every night.

those are indeed 2/3 of the solidfying needs of the team going forward: PF/SF/third guard. Kirilenko & Terry, or Prince, or Nene or Iggy or Wallace or Brooks or Green or Mayo or....

But they're not here yet. And even if they are we would be the only team in the league intentionaly having secondary players handle the ball in game winnign situations like last night's. So../ we lost. Next year we'll be better. Rinse, repeat, same ole for us. But people upset about that play really didn't have anything to be upset about, here today with this team, except that it didn't work.
