Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Lot of hustle, lot of effort. Looked good.

Artest ( B ) -- drew a number of fouls in the first half, but it was one of those Artest shooting nights (0-8 first half, 3-14 for the game). Shot poorly and had nobody in particular to lock down on the other end, but was still active and aggressive drawing fouls, so a preseason B.
Thomas ( B- ) -- didn't really do much. Modest numbers, modest game and the only one fo the starters to be mostly invisible.
Miller ( A- ) -- hit the opening shot of the game, and peppered in shots around the perimeter therafter. Got scored on a few times in the post -- he hasn't got any longer or stronger in the offseason. But impressed with a very high level of activity on both ends, hustling around and challenging perimeter shots on defense, and grabbing several offesnive boards on the other.
Martin ( A- ) -- a more than solid showing, hit shots inside and out, grabbed boards, and did it while staying in control. Stats will say he shot poorly, but for the most part they were good shots, or at least good aggressive shots. And until the end when he maybe forced a few things, he did a nice job of picking his spots withing the offense.
Bibby ( A ) -- who was that masked man? Started off the game looking very good -- much quicker than we last saw him on defense, and drained two threes in the early going. Very active on BOTH sides -- maybe the most active we've seen him on defense. And while it was in short minutes and in only the first game of the season (as opposed to being in 40min in the 63rd game of the long grind), the activity on defense did absolutely nothing to tire him on the other end of the floor where he was smoking and easily the best player on the floor.
Reef ( B ) -- came in initially as...the backup center. And here people thought that was just Rick. Did little in his first half minutes, but scored well in his second half stint, and finished with 10 points in only 17 minutes. Did rebound like it was 05-06 however, giving us all of 1 for the evening.
Salmons ( C+ ) -- did nothing in his first half stint, and was maybe one of the only main rotation guys who was disappointing. Was better in the second half, and in the mid 4th finally demonstrated his best weapon -- a very quick first step off the drive.
Douby ( C+ ) -- came in in place of Bibby in the first half, was quiet offensively and turned it over, but did continue picking up the ball full court and used his quickness on defense (a bit too aggressive actually as he picked up 3 quick fouls). Did not look confident from distance, but showed a little bit of his scoring ability in the extended garbagetime of the 4th with a hanging baseline drive.
Amundson ( B- ) -- bricked some ugly FTs, but showed some good hustle and helped clear the glass in the first half. Looks a little small for the PF spot right now, but was never really matched against a big PF type to get a clearer read (mostly matched with Croshere). Didn't do much in his 4th quarter minutes until the last minute when he made a nice hustle save on the break and then sprinted back down court to draw a foul. Pretty much appeared to be a hustle specialist this time, but not sure off of this one game if the talent or size is there for significant PT.
Garcia ( B+ ) -- came in 10th -- don't know whether that means anything or not this early. Used his length on defense, and poked away a lot of balls to disrupt. On the other end did some of his old forcing on offense. Set a nifty pick to close the 3rd and free up Hart for the buzzer beater.
Woods ( INC ) -- came in the game and immediately showed both sides of Loren Woods -- on one end decided to go at Dampier and got packed, but got back on defense to alter the resulting shot at the other end with his length. Didn't see much of him tonight.
Williamson ( B+ ) -- scored a number of first half hoops, and looked smooth doing so. Not much else, but made his offensive contribution. Got a little sloppy late running with the deep scrubs, but still scored with relative ease.
Price ( C+ ) -- tried to leave an impresion by flying in for a monster dunk on Dampier, and got it sent back in his face for his trouble. Didn't do much therafter, but, as all of our PGs tongiht, did harass on defense.
Williams ( B+ ) -- came in fairly late and showed well early on the glass. Seeing him matched up against Dampier you could see how much size he was giving up, and he was occasionally more enthusiastic than he was effective. Nonetheless, his activity and energy kept him in the mix on the galss on both ends, and he put up a solid 7pts 6rebs in 13min.
Hart ( B+ ) -- came in late in the 3rd for the first time and got burned a couple of times by Jose Barea. Not a great first impression if you're auditioning. But hit the buzzerbeating 3 to close the 3rd, and then played well in the early 4th (albeit a bit shothappy for a PG) to make his argument.
Jeter ( INC ) -- Pooh at least got himself into an NBA preseason game, and looked very quick, although wasn't able to do much in garabgetime.

Muss ( N/A ) -- you can't really grade a coach in preseason, but I think Muss did a very nice job tonight. He had the starters primed at playing at a much higher level of intensity than the Mavs starting crew (which was minus Dirk and Terry) and then switched off going through almost all of the guys fighting for spots. Also had his full court pressure defensive philosophy fully on display, picking up the Mavs in their own backcourt on almost every possession regardless of whether it was Mike Bibby, Quincy Douby, or Ronnie Price at the PG. In general we simply outclassed the Mavs tonight, and came in much sharper, healthier, and ready to play. Of course being more ready to rumble in preseason game #1 doesn't necessarily mean a whole hell of a lot, but it was encouraging to see that almost everyone seemed to be buying in to the plan and understanding how Muss wants to approach things. Even guys like Mike and Brad, not two of the league's great hustlers, came out and established just that tone with high level activity and defensive hustle. In short, we played well, and everybody was on the same page. So preseason it may be, but nonetheless, a preseason success. So far so good.

Mike Bibby looked GREAT on defense. See, he can be a good defensive player! Great effort out there for sure.

John Salmons looked good too and Kmart looked very confident. I am sooo excited about the season!

Oh yeah and Justin Williams and Lou Amundson looked great as well. I hope these guys make the team. Justin is small but he never looks overpowered. I noticed that about him in summer league when matched up against bigger guys like PPod.

Brad looked great as well. He held his own against Damp who usually kills Brad. Brad looks a lot stronger than I think we've seen.

And what about that rebounding. Kevin did a tremendous job at clearing the glass. Outrebounded a very good rebounding team. by double digits.

What do u mean by longer?

I only disagree with one grade: Musselman.

I think he deserves an A. It's apparent he's worked hard with this team; they've bought into his philosophy - at least so far - and they're showing hustle and hunger. My only concern is that he invest in Sucrets because he's going to kill his throat.

;)

are you serious???

wow what game were you watching.... your grades are terrible... Amundson a B- ???
he is for sure getting cut... after tonight... whatever he did during the summer league is not gonna be seen on this level... my guess is that he might have pushed around people with his size during the summer...but that aint gonna happen here... we saw against dallas tonight that against real nba size Amundson has no shot... he has no offense... again that is zero offense... i think i even saw on of the bench coaches laughing at him at one point... he even tried to just lay up a ball way after he had been fouled and no one was around him and he still missed... then almost missed the rim on his foul shot... way short... he is a joke of a player... thats why you dont judge any of the non drafted players till the play at least a preseason game... even drafted players dont work out so the odds are way against these guys... i would take potato head over this guy in a heart beat...

anyway Williams probably has the best shot to make it... he at least looked ok... and also looked like he could score/hit a free throw... plus he was getting up in peoples grills...

The team defense and rebouding impressed me but, from a individual standpoint. Bibby looks great on both ends as stated. Justin Williams did better than any of the reserve bigs with his hustle, rebounding, putbacks and he actually hit a free throw Lou. Miller has a sweet stroke going early. Salmons did well in the second half once he settled down. He looks as if he will fit fine once his role is established as tonights bench is something you would never see in a game with 5 sub on the floor at the same time. Kevin Martin proved Bonzi isn't the only 2 guard that can rebound and he did it without having to miss 4 shots up close to get 4 rebounds.

Also Loren Woods didn't impress me at all in fact he looked lost the whole time he was on court. Kinda like he was figuring out what he should do when Justin Williams was on he was doing what he could do.

no you come on..... potato makes 3.5 million a year... someone gave him that money... maybe not a smart GM but ive seen him play against the kings and the few min's he got with the kings... he CAN PLAY IN THE NBA... MAYBE NOT that well but at least has size to bang with the big boys... Amundson is a joke... not even gonna make it in the d-league...

I have to agree with you, Potato may not be in the greatest of shape in comparison, but he can still fill up the lane...when I lived in Boston, he was the starter for the C's, and he was always VERY active, and if it wasnt for a couple of nagging injuries that took away what little quickness that he DID have, he may still be getting a bit more playing time, even on this Kings team...I doubt he plays much this season, but he's a better option in the middle than we've had for an emergency big man, especially last year...Jamal Sampson was useless, obviously, and still is. Have to agree with you about Amundson, too...WAR Justin Williams...this kid is active!

Well we somehow put up 111 with Lou's ZERO OFFENSE. We didn't bring him in for his sweet stroke or dominating post moves. Maybe you didn't get the memo. We brought him in because he scraps and will get some boards. To the tune of 4 in 11 minutes by the way.

I actually think Bricks grades are pretty spot on...for once. ;)

what's with the hostility? one thing to note about brick's grades is that they can be weighted depending on the circumstances. tonight's circumstance: preseason game #1. he graded according to that parameter. later on in the preseason, when it comes down to cuts, perhaps brick will tighten up his grading scheme. i dunno...not my grades, and i didn't watch the game, but these young guys are probably nervous out of their minds and they're still trying to stay hungry and competitive despite the unfavorable odds. that can say a lot about how they should be graded.

Exactly...picking on Amundson's ZERO OFFENSE is exactly the problem this team has had for years. Stacking our team with predominantly offensive-minded players has never won us a championship and won't win us one anytime soon. Every championship team has had role players who can't hit the broad side of a barn. I'm not claiming that Louis will be our first option role player or anything, but he doesn't need to light it up to be a help to the team.

do you realize that dallas didnt even play their best players... we played ok against their bench... and Josh Howard... sure our starters looked good... but wow if C= and avg. NBA game .... really would everyone that watched tonight agree that against Josh Howard and bench crew all these kings played above avg. NBA games??? Amundson should have had F for being worse than potato head that didnt even play tonight...

Amundsons basketball career ended tonight... no skills... his def. is soft hes weak... and has no basketball skills ... just big and tall... and not actually big or that tall...

Do you realize the purpoe of pre-season games? Can you define PRE-SEASON?

The grades are based on the game that was played, not what might have happened in a different game.

Take it down a notch, please.

except it wasn't an average nba game. it was a preseason game. moreover, it was the first preseason game, and was graded accordingly.

I'll try and be kind here.

Since the game thread is full of references to the fact that Dallas was not playing its primary players, apparently we did realize that.

As someone pointed out above, you do not yet understand Bricklayer's grading system. Feel free to disagree, but at least understand the grading system first.

when u frist said potato head i thought u meant the toy, i love it when vf says tone it down, u could always just lower the volume on ur speakers?
