Well, this wasn't exactly the stress free, starters kicking it on the bench sipping mai tais by the start of the 4th blowout you might have wished for, but we showed up, overcame an absolutely horrid night from every member of our backcourt not named Jimmer, and with the Magic trying to smallball us tonight we responded in a way that warmed the cockles of my heart, pounding the ball down inside, running the Gay at SG lineups so that we had no fewer than 4 postup advantages, and creaming them on the glass. That's how you crush a smallball team. 2 in a row after the player's meeting. Let's see if we can make it 3 and close out the homestand in respectable fashion.

Gay ( A ) -- becoming so smooth and consistent that you run out of things to say. Another strong, efficient game. Actually turned the ball over on the very first play of the game trying to feed JT in the post, as that was a major pillar of our early game strategy with the Magic trying to smallball us. But later hit him two times easily on the same pass, and throughout the night again showed himself capable of making nice passes to create for teammates as well as himself. Not really that involved offensively in the early going as we happily went about pounding the itsy bitsy Magic inside, but got a nice baseline shot to fall in the mid quarter, and followed that with a big block on Afflalo the other way. First guy out in our new substitution pattern for Wiliams, and unfortunately when he returned might have been too eager to get going and first thing he did was throw up a random too quick contested three. Started to score, but was taking higher degree of difficulty shots than just about anybody else. But when the Magic went back to the mini lineup, we responded again by having Gay play some SG and were able to basically post with any of our SG through C. Played a nice smooth third, passing the ball, hitting jumpers that look contested, but apparently aren't due to his great length, running the floor with Cuz as those two guys really took control of the game with IT having an off night and sort of did everything from running the point to finishing. Took a hit to the, er, lower stomach again in the early 4th that actually caused one of his turnovers, but revived and was back to solid play. As we returned to our new mega Gay/DWill swingman combo, gave us a major boost on the glass as well. We're 6-8 now since he arrived in the starting lineup. Project that out and if he'd been here full year we would be about 15-20, around the same record as New Orleans or Memphis. Not yet good without moves for some defense, but not laughingstocks either.--Brick

Thompson ( B+ ) -- As a role player I'm not sure Jason can play much better than he did tonight. He did everything his role requires of him and did it extremely well for the most part without forcing anything or stepping on anyone's toes, which is part of being a role player. He helped set the tone early as we established an inside presence from the opening tip. Started in the post with a drop-step and righty finish off the glass. Then Rudy found him for the dunk. After that, cut baseline and Isaiah found him with a well timed pass for the reverse layup. Defensively it was a tough match-up for Jason as he was stuck guarding Harris for much of his time on the floor who's a SF and stretched the floor by spotting up on the wing or in the corner. Harris however isn't all that good of a player and hit only 3 of his 5 made FG's on the night while matched against JT. Jason did bite on a Harris pump fake from the top of the key as Harris blew by him and finished the layup as JT fouled him from behind but that type of thing will happen now and then when he's asked to match up against SF's. I'm glad btw that Malone didn't decide to go small to match-up with Orlando much of the night and instead for stretches forced them to deal with our size advantage. Offensively JT continued his solid and extremely efficient display in the 2nd half. Swished a perimeter jumper but continued doing most of his work in the paint. Saw a flash of nice high-low action when Cuz hit Jason on a nice cut as he dropped in the hook. Finished 7-9 on the night and didn't take a single questionable shot. Hit the glass pretty well as we dominated Orlando on the boards all night. A very efficient night for JT where he hit just about every shot which came his way, actually did a good job on his defensive rotations as he was sagging off Harris and providing help when needed and rebounded well. Can't ask for much more.--Rain

Cousins ( A ) -- Another day, another great game by DeMarcus. There are a few things you know about Cousins. One, he's a great rebounder. Check. Fourteen boards on the night, although given that he grabbed eight of those in the first quarter alone it looked early on that he was on his way to a 20+ rebound game in the absence of Nicola Vucevic. You also know he's a great scorer. Check. Cousins did his scoring a bit topsy-turvy in this game. He did very little posting up - at least some of this is because the Kings determined to exploit JT in the paint against the out-of-position Tobias Harris, which was working so well there wasn't much reason to give it up. But even when JT was out of the game, Cousins only posted a couple of times, with the most notable ones being the two times Big Baby denied the entry pass (once by fouling, once by knocking it out of bounds). Instead, Cuz took a lot of open jump shots (which he was being given), setting the scene early with three quick jumpers and finishing the game by going 5-7 on his J. He actually missed four of his first five shots at the rim (the only hit being a coast-to-coast layup - thing #3 that you know about Cousins is that he can handle) but ended up going 3-6 on drives and 1-2 on putbacks. Couple that with 6-6 from the line and it's clear that Orlando had very little answer for Cousins' offense. The fourth thing you know is that DeMarcus can pass. Tonight Cousins had six assists - three of those were for dunks (and DW cheated him of another assist by clanking one), two in spectacular fashion on the fast break. The second of those breaks was initiated by Cousins coming out to help on Jameer and straight up ripping the ball from the little man like that thing was Boogie's Ice Cream Cone. GIVE THE MAN HIS ICE CREAM! And that leads into the fifth thing you supposedly know about DeMarcus - he's a terrible defender. Well, not today, man. Not today. Cousins not only played good D, he played smart D. He baited Big Baby into taking EIGHT jump shots - he made ONE. But he also played great help defense. I was paying special attention to Cousins' help D tonight, and the best i can figure it, it went like this: I counted 25 opportunities for Cousins to help (you'd think it would be more, but Orlando didn't play a lot of pick-and-roll and took a ton of jumpers). On those 25 chances, Cousins failed to help three times. There were three fouls (only one on Cuz), and four makes. But there were five misses and ten denies where he forced the man he was helping on to pass. So 88% of the time, Cousins played it right and did what he had to do, and out of 22 opportunities for the Magic to hurt us in the paint, he only allowed 10 points. I was really happy with Cousins' defense tonight. Anyway, I'll probably reserve the A+ for a 20/20 game, but Cuz can't play much better. --Capt.

Thornton ( C- ) -- It is getting hard to tell if the Kings are starting Marcus to show case him, or the Kings are starting Marcus because he is better than Ben. Either way, making a shooter look good when he is not making shots and not taking many shots is going to be hard to do. Tonight wasn’t a particularly bad game for MT, even if his only point came at the line. He was hustling after rebounds on the offensive end and was responsible for the Kings gaining possession on the opening tip. We are getting to the point where there isn’t much to say about Thornton and it is probably safe to say there their won’t be much to say about him in the future. With this new style of basketball the Kings are playing, that emphasizes getting the ball to the good players on the team there isn’t much room for Marcus to shine. Even if he wanted to. Best hope for Kings fans is someone thinks they can coax some of his former glory out of him and we can trade him.--Spud

Thomas ( D+ ) -- Well, what a night for IT. If I didn't know better, I would have said he was on drugs or something. So start with what he did right. He guarded Nelson pretty well all night long. He did lose him a couple of times and both times it resulted in a basket. He also had 7 assists if I counted correctly, but should have had more. In the first quarter he had Thornton wide open cutting to the basket, and for some reason ignored him, or perhaps didn't see him. Instead he put the ball on the floor, drove around the left side of the key, pulled up and missed. A bit later he drove the lane, threw up a floater and missed, but got his own rebound and missed the put back as well. He followed that by missing a corner three. That's when he backed off Nelson, who said thank you and hit a three. Late in the first, it appeared that he made eye contact with Williams, who immediately headed toward the basket and was open for an alley opp or a backdoor, but once again, IT ignored him. IT went to the bench at the end of the quarter, and re-entered the game at 3:44 of the 2nd quarter. He got off to a good start by immediately turning the ball over. At this point it appeared to me that IT just wasn't playing with his normal intensity and concentration. He appeared to be almost nonchalant out there. He did make a nice pass to a cutting Cuz, but followed that by driving into traffic and getting the ball stolen. IT started the 2nd half by losing track of Nelson who hit a three. He made a nice pass to JT who hit an 18 footer. And then, finally, IT hit a three, his first basket of the night. He was to make only one more basket, a layup. The rest of his points were at the line. He did make a few nice passes after that for assists, but he made a couple of bonehead plays as well, like ending the 3rd quarter by grabbing the ball and driving toward the basket, and then throwing the ball back over his head, and Cousins head for an over and back. He closed things out by driving into the lane and getting the ball stolen. All in all, just a terrible night for IT. This is one he'll try to forget quickly.--bajaden

Williams ( A- ) -- DWill morphed back into DThrill in this one and provided the spark off the bench we needed. If you're a fan of dunks, energizing, rim rattling dunks, then you likely enjoyed the display DWill put on tonight. It wasn't just the dunks though, in general Derrick appeared to have more energy tonight and his activity level was up. Started making his presence felt in the 2nd where he got into the lane off a nice fake and converted a nice little runner. Missed his next attempt at a similar runner but grabbed his own miss and slammed it home. Towards the end of the quarter had a big offensive rebound he brought down with one hand and then finished off with a dunk. His energy in the 2nd was a clear factor in us dominating the quarter. Came in late in the 3rd and picked up where he left off. Made a hard baseline back-cut which Cuz picked out with a perfect bounce pass and skied for the tomahawk dunk. Had an aggressive take to the rim and finish off an attack from the top of the key from another pass from Cuz. Then brought the house down with a two-handed windmill dunk in the 4th off yet another setup from Cuz. Also had 6 rebs on the night but more importantly was active on defense and did a good job on his rotations. Derrick wasn't credited with a block or a steal tonight but that's not a reflection of his defensive performance which was better than we've seen recently. It appears the team feeds off his energy on nights like these and he certainly added excitement to this game. Question is how can we reproduce what we saw tonight. Too bad we only play the Magic twice. --Rain

McLemore ( D ) -- Another tough night for Ben as he continues to miss open looks. One has to wonder if his confidence is at an all time low. He is still losing his man on the defensive end and seems utterly lost. You can spot him cheating off his guy in what one can only think is an attempt to play help defense. Unfortunately Ben still doesn’t seem to understand when to help and when to stick with his man. It cost us 3 points on one play when another rookie, Oladipo, hit a wide open corner 3 with Ben miles away. Something that stood out to me was the shot of the Kings players headed to the locker room at the end of the game. Ben had a kind of apathetic look on his face while the rest of the team seemed thrilled to be leaving with the win. Malone has brought the best out of Cousins and Gay this year. He has also made IT look like an all star at times. Given time I think he will help bring the best of Ben too. I know that is wishful thinking but I think we owe it to our Rookie to not get too down on him even when he is disappointing. --Spud

Acy ( B ) -- My etymological dictionary says that "Acy" comes from a Middle French word for "dude who sets screens and grabs rebounds". He came in for a very solid stint in the first half where he seemed to grab every rebound available (the box score says six, my notes say seven) and took and hit two high-percentage shots, one an open jumper and one a layup on a nice drive as the clock was running down. Not shockingly, he was also active on defense, forcing one miss on help and preempting three other shots. He had only two short spurts in the second half, one during garbagetime and the other basically forgettable and he didn't play big minutes (13 overall) but he was definitely an asset while he was on the floor. --Capt

Fredette ( B+ ) -- This was one of Jimmers better nights. He scored 11 points in 13 minutes, and he did it efficiently on 4 of 6 shooting overall, and 2 for 2 from beyond the arc. He also added 3 assists against 1 turnover. Jimmer also played very good defense on a couple of occasions, and good defense in general. On one occasion Nelson did every trick in his bag without using a pick to free himself from Jimmer and couldn't do it and gave up the ball. On another occasion Jimmer got back on a breakaway and knocked the ball out of Affallo's hands to save a basket. He started the 2nd quarter and immediately made a nice inside pass to Williams who scored. He followed that with his only major mistake of the night, when he made a bad pass to Thornton that was picked off. He came back on the next possession by cutting left of the lane, and kicking the ball back to an open Acy who hit a 16 footer. On the next possession, in transition, Jimmer stopped and popped for a three. He followed that by coming down the floor, passing the ball to Thornton who immediately passed it right back to Jimmer who went up and hit another three. He closed out his scoring in the 2nd by driving under the basket, and appeared to be trapped, but used a beautiful dropstep, got his defenders turned in the wrong direction and scored on a little scoop shot. Ironicly, the only other basket was almost a duplication of that shot in the 4th quarter, and he was also fouled for a three point play. He didn't play long in the fourth, but he did a nice job of getting the ball into either Cousins, Gay, or Williams. It was a very good game, and if not for only playing 13 minutes, he might have gotten an A. --Baja

Gray ( INC ) -- All things considered, Gray had a pretty lousy game. In his stint in the first half he was a foul machine, picking up three fouls in less than four minutes and getting yanked right back off the floor. He finally got a chance to come back in during garbagetime and immediately threw a bad pass that turned into a meaningless Magic fast break. But he only played five minutes and his Grizzly Adams beard is staring me down, so I'll just give him and incomplete and back away slowly.--Capt

I know there are plenty here who will disagree with me, but I'm not sure what the team has to lose by at least trying Jimmer out at the starting position. IIRC he was given a few starts early in his NBA career, but we all know that the coaching/management/team had gone to poopoo at that point in time. I'd like to see what he could do with more minutes right now. He has been scoring at high PPM, I'd be curious what kind of numbers he could put up given the opportunity.

The saying "you are only as good as your weakest link" has never been truer than for this Kings team, the recent success has been a direct result of playing Cuz/JT,Gay,IT, D-Will in the Big Boy Toys line up while limiting the devastation Thornton/Mclemore have has meant this looks like a completely different team.

With the current line up it's Derrick Williams who is the weakest link but that is a good thing considering he's a talented athletic beast, meaning we are a better basketball team in every aspect with those guys playing the bulk of the playing time together.

#Effortless Godsins performance didn't break a sweat other than his Magic Johnson type plays
#IT terrible shooting night but still I can forgive
#Gay....that passing o and that TS% bow down to Rudy
#D-Windmills made excellent cuts and movement off the ball and probably got every Kings fan out of there seat at least 3 times.
#Acy...the man has some skills and the energy is just on another level, excellent team defender and I love the dude
#Jimmer played very well
#JT same as Jimmer played well
#eMTpty and Mclemore 0-8 and you can use that first number to describe the defence they played as well

Probably worse. If on the court with Thomas Gay and cousins. Jimmer would not be getting touches like he does from the bench. Jimmer can be effective as a bench player. Lets not push him into a position where his true talent will not be utilized.

I've always been a supporter of at least trying the "big" lineup of dmc/jt/gay/dwill/it. Don't know why some were so vehemently against it. I hated matching small ball when we could just take advantage by overpowering with the bigger player. I'm glad Malone is trying it out since our sg are doing so poorly anyways

I actually think Jimmer would get better looks. He is also mush better at getting his team mates involved than either MT or Ben.

I would not object to this idea. It would be like Jimmer and D-Will. Both have been in the league 3 years, and lots argue that D-Will should be starting, yet would screech at the thought of Jimmer bringing any ball up. However, I don't think IT has done anything to where I think he doesn't deserve to start anymore.

I wonder why Coach took him out towards the end of the 4th quarter when the kings were obviously going to win. They subbed him out and put Thompson back in, and it looked like Jimmer was disappointed heading back to the bench. He didn't do anything wrong, and there was no need to sub him out.

Probably would get better looks but in that particular lineup I don't want jimmer getting shots that the true stars should be getting. The sooner jimmer fans accept that the better they will feel.

IT. Tonight, he and Cousins started out trying to get others involved. Did a fair job. Relaxed a little in the second half and did better. Did I hear Brick praising IT's and the team's defense tonight? Things are trying hard to come around. Tonight we made some baby steps forward. Was there and enjoyed this new experience and seeing folks like Williams, Fredette, Acy play well and contribute. Great good fun.

Did Jimmer + IT play together for the first time tonight? I really like the recent improvement of Jimmer and he was really looking for his shot and was hitting it. Awesome

You are reading what you want I guess. Not wanting a guy in the starting lineup and hating him is two different ends of the spectrum. It's ridiculous for you to say that at this juncture. I said he should stay on the bench and the "" true stars comment as if its even in question who the stars on this team are is equally ridiculous.

What impressed me about Gays 8-13 shooting is that he forced 2 unnecessary jump shots and still shot 61%, amazing. He needs to do more pick and rol with DMC instead if IT, rudy makes more plays for his teammates than IT off of it.

Yeah Gay has very nice court vision in the half court while having terribl vision in the full court, but yeah his size and decent passing ability make him a deadly passer in the pick n roll with Cuz.

Should I hold your hand? Jimmer starting would take away from what he does best that is ball in hand firing away at his streaky best. You don't want that interfering with Gay and Cousins. Isaiah disrupts it enough when he plays hero ball. And here you want a guy who is FINALLY having some success in a role to be taken out of that role and inserted with 3 other players that need the ball to be successful. We have 2 guys on this team that do not need the ball to be successful in their roles that is JT and Acy.

Hmm. Nice little cheap-shot to IT after a great win. How does it make any sense at all to put an "IT is struggling" poll goes up after his worst shooting performance of the year? With a 4 game sample? And when outside of tonight, he wasn't even struggling in January? Prior to tonight, he was 22 PPG, 7.5 APG on 57% TS and 16 FGA/game in January.

But I suppose it's just my biased tendencies that I even mention it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Right now, Jimmer is finally coming into his own. His confidence is soaring and his game is the best I've seen since he entered the NBA. Why would you want to mess with that?

Jimmer's doing good, the team is coming together. As I said, it ain't broke.

I think this might be true. Ironically, he may get better looks by playing with players who take more shots
Better looks yeah I'm sure of it. But not many of them. Thornton and McLemore got 8 combined shots in 36 min. Jimmer had 6 in 13 min off the bench. He would be frozen out. We need a great defensive player at sg not a scorer. Nobody on this team gives us what we need. Besides can you imagin jimmer guarding wade, harden, Bryant, Gordon, derozan, tyreke, it would not bode well. He just needs to come in and be aggressive and shoot the ball that is his talent. Not running to a corner and hope for a kick out.

It is. It is even more disappointing to see you try and use a stat like TS when you know it doesn't illustrate how he has been shooting. While I haven't crunched the numbers I find it hard to believe the mess in Portland doesn't skews that stat terribly.

I gotta agree with Npliam. That's kind of a rude thing to say. For the most part, the Jimmer fans still here aren't overbearing. Them saying they'd like to see Jimmer start is no different than someone else saying they'd like to see a different player starting. I don't agree with fixing something that isn't broken right now, but I certainly don't blame them for hoping for more for the guy they came here for in the first place.

It's all good.

:)

This was a very easy 20/10 game for Cousins. Perhaps the most effortless A grade game I've seen in his career.

Also, it seems Aaron Gray has taken up the Ronny Turiaf/Bazemore happy bench guy role. Props to him for taking up a job nobody else has wanted to do for the Kings.
