Don't Make Me Use The Bat
This team is giving me a frigging heart attack! :D

Peja ( B- ) -- Hard game to grade -- terrible shooting night, but found a way to put up points. Started out the game on fire -- Webb and Christie set him up repeatedly and he had 8 points before most of the Laker fans even deigned to get into their seats. But disappeared soon therafter, and barely hit another shot all game long. Settled for a long stream of three pointers at one point, but thankfully got smart in the third quarter and started mixing things up and getting to the line with a true Reggie Miller-like game. Not getting fouled on the shots, but coming off the picks hard and throwing his arms and body around to draw the foul on the hapless defender -- single handedly knocked Caron Butler out of the game with fouls. Finally hit another FG in the dying minutes of the game on a drive to the hoop, and came up with a huge steal in the last minute off a loose ball leading to FTs on the other end. Now officially has to be called the worst 6'9" rebounder in the league. Grabbed three tonight, and on one of them had the audacity to let out a yell. :)
Webb ( B+ ) -- very smooth in control game through three quarters tonight. Was a man on the boards, and thank god, because without him we would have been lucky to have 20 rebs tonight. Made a simply beautiful court lengh pass to Doug Christie in the third. Was attacking the inside, and then mixed things up in the third with a series of made jumpers. Unfortuantely in the 4th quarter went ice cold and was being leaned on to a huge degree by the struggling team to score. Still getting good looking inside shots, but no longer falling. Whole team went ice cold, and he could not bail us out. Team just absolutely stopped moving and left it to Webb to shoot the ball time and again. Still, in the end we're talking about 22pts 16rebs 7ast. But lost his A though in the final qaurter.
Miller ( C+ ) -- really struggled from the opening tip. Was getting worked by Chris Mihm. But after Mihm went out, still unable to get anything going against any of the Lakers. Couldn't even take advantage of Brian Cook. Battled back in the 4th quarter though, belatedly getting on the boards and providing some nice step out defensive help on the perimeter. Almost wanted to bump him up to a B- just based on his strong play down the stretch. But he was just miserable for such a long period of time that I couldn't do it for 6 minutes of good play.
Christie ( B- ) -- started out the game sloppy, and got his shot blocked on back to back drives resulting in easy fastbreak opportunities for the Lakers. Offensive contributions were ok, but modest. And defensively never at any point had Kobe remotely under control. Had an adventuresome final two minutes -- hit a big three with less than 2 minutes to go, got called for a critical flagrant foul, and then came back to double kobe, force the ball out of his hands, and create turnovers and bad shots for the Lakers.
Bibby ( C+ ) -- Was playing a generally poor game, but came up big down the stretch -- pulled a mega-flop on Chucky Atkins in the last few minutes that must have made Vlade smile, and then hit a giant three pointer in the last minute immediately after one from Doug.
BJax ( B ) -- played an excellent first half (when he was actually the guy pulling the ball back and settling the offesne at times), and then sat out for a very long time in the seocnd half. When he came back he was off and on. greta drive, followed by a couple of poor decisions. Kobe's presence all game long made big minutes for Bobby tough -- hard to gvaurd Kobe with a 6'1" guard.
Songaila ( B+ ) -- came in and again gave us a strong effort. Better in the second qaurter when he chipped in 8pts than the 4th. Was probably a better option for the Lakers perimeter oriented big men than Miller at times. Spent a lot of time chasing around on the perimeter, but again didn't give us much ont he boards.
Barnes ( B ) -- provided his trademark hustle, as well unfortunately as a couple of his trademark overagressive mistakes. Stroked a couple of smooth jumpers within the offense, and gave us a nice boost on the boards in the first half. Tried his best to stay with Kobe, but Kobe was too good tonight.

Adelman ( B+ ) -- whew! That's four straight 4th quarter victories. You could see our athleticism problems all night long, but when it mattered most, we out executed them. Was glad to see us fianlly going to the hard double teams in the late game to get the ball out of Kobe's hands, but tonight it really didn't matter. Doug, Barnes, Peja, Bobby all took turns at guarding kobe in this one. None could slow him down (thought Peja might have doen the best job with double team help). Short bench again, but the addition of the minutes for Barnes really helped this time out with our athleticism problems.

Officials: ( F ) -- there were a couple of simply awful calls in the 4th quarter that were just blatantly bad. Bennet Salvatore was just ridiculous. Entirely blew a clear breakaway foul committed to stop a Bobby Jackson layup, and then called a flagrant foul on Doug Christie with 1 minute to go! Almost decided the game.

Chris Webber deserves an A+. He didn't have a good 4th quarter, but Webber kept us in the game in the 3rd.

I'm going to state it now, Chris Webber will be MVP this year and lead the Kings to an NBA championship. He has been the perfect all around player, and he continues to do this night after night. He's also doing this while enjoying himself, as we saw him smiling all night long (except for that series of horrible calls by the officials toward the end of the game).

I'd probably put Christie for a solid D. He knocked a couple of WIDE OPEN shots from a little bit further than free throw range and made a big bucket late. But he also had a HORRIBLE defensive game on Bryant and a retarded intentional foul (even if it wasn't intentional, it was retarded) and also stepped out of bounds to give the Lakers another chance.

Since I do not see any smilies I am not sure that this was sarcasm. I just hope it was

I would of gave Webber an A or A-.

He had 16 rebounds which was unusual for him. Made his free-throws and he gave Lamar Odom a hard time. The only con is that he didnt make 2-3 shots late.

Webber definitely had an A game before the fourth. And he really did ruin it towards the end. Call me a pessimist, but I had very little faith when he touched the ball towards the end of the game. Chris has the captain mentality that when the ship starts sinking, he makes sure that he sinks with it.
But then again, the rest of the Kings didn't look any more confident either.

I do have to give props to Barnes. I thought that he was complete garbage, but tonight he played well and I really like his hustle.

What is going on here somebody actually giving Webber credit? I thought his name was only mentioned when he has 1 bad game out of 12. HMMMM I wonder how many times Webber completley silence critics this year. So far its been 11 times this year. I am guessing the people that talked about him since his last game have absolutley nothing to say about him tonight that they couldn't say about anybody else on the team. hmm that goes for the other nights game as well doesn't it.

Immediately after the game went final I thought to myself: Wow, how do you grade this one!

Since this win came against the Lakers, with Kings making huge play after huge play in the dying seconds to come from behind and win, I vote that you should up the grades for Pedja, Bibby and CWebb at least. Christie for his D is another good candidate.

I mean, we have to start appreciating "mental toughness" and not just pure bball skillz on display, don't you think so? :)

He made the kind of sound I make when I am trying to move a heavy box in my garage :)

But really, it was really nice to see Peja come up and hit those clutch FT's :D

I would add one more grade tonight:

Overall team grade: A

They went out and got the job done, despite some key calls (and non-calls), incredibly unfortunate cold streaks, etc. The TEAM got the job done tonight and if they can do that on a regular basis, we're gonna have a lot of fun this season!

Haha, I don't know if you guys had to sit through Walton tonight but it was pretty funny towards the end when he was saying that Pedja's free throws tonight looked a little shaky cause they were touching rim.
Once a moron, always a moron.

No disrespect to Bricklayer, and I know its a tradition to do the grades. But isn't it time with all the bad mouthing of Webber and Peja this offseason and during this season to not single out player performances. This is kinda what you do with the grades. I wish ppl wouldn't say wow kings won but Webber had a bad shooting night or Peja couldn't get a rebound or Brad didn't box out good enough. Instead look at it everynight as a team. Like hey Kings won A+. Every night its a team effort. If we keep grading each individual player doesn't that play right into the hands of the critics?

Yeah, but we like to disect each players performance and look for trends/patterns. I don't mind it, I'm sure that coaches do something similar with their +/- and other extensive stats that they get. It enables them to figure out team's weaknesses and strong parts.

No.

Webber was great. Peja, despite all the missed shots was very good overall. His free-throws were the difference. I think that without the Los Angeles referees, this game would not have been close.

Yeah i understand that for the coaches. But as a fan of team. Do you really sit there watching the game looking for mistakes and pointing them out? Hey if a guy misses a shot so what maybe he will hit the next won Go Kings. If a guy turns the ball over so what he may come up with an awesome assist next to win the game Go Kings. If a guy leads his team to a victory with an outstanding individual performance so what Kings won not just him GO KINGS!!!!!!!!

Bobby should have a B+ because he really stepped up when we needed points. He continually drove to the basket and was successful, besides the one where he was blocked. Chris Webber did a beautiful job being the passer, but I was angry during the times when nobody was moving off of pics and cutting. The grades are good

No, but as a former basketball player (which is the only sport I still play) I still like to think about that stuff. (In response to Entity's post)
And I think that's why this is such a good forum. It has both fans side and some really good analysis.

It looks like Adelman is going to play an eight-man rotation (starters + Jackson/Songaila/Barnes) against fast-break teams, and a nine-man rotation (starters + Jackson/Songaila/Barnes/Ostertag) against halfcourt teams. I think I can live with that...
sounds good

Brickie's assessments are my favorite part of the forum. People that know a lot more about the sport than I usually have relevant things to say. It helps me understand the game, and ultimately, enjoy it more. Stop whining.

I like the way we are starting to play in pressure situations. The Kings are keeping their heads, their defense in the last few minutes was great. BTW, why don't the Kings play more zone defense they seem to be more effective in keeping slashers like Kobe driving towards the basket.

Ideally? Sure. But this is what we do, this is why we are fans. Its why they have All-Star games, MVP awards, 6th man awards, D player of the year awards. But, I don't think most of us have an care who scores and who doesn't as long as the team wins.

P.S. The only thing that does annoy my a bit is the arguements that fans can get into over who is the supposed "best player on the team"

I'm not whinning quick dog just wishing ppl would look at it more as a team than a group of players.

typos are a bitsh

webb has been boarding well so far with the exception of the game against the rockets when bobby and bibby had season highs in rebounding (10,9,13,11,7,10,9,13,12,5,16)

great points slim about barnes and the bench. i agree with you all the way. i also agree with you brick about this team giving you heart attacks :D man i was going NUTS in that 4th QT, i was on the phone the whole time with my friend who's a lakers fan and we were going back and forth the whole game. hahaha it was awesome.

since i actually got to WATCH the game ( WOO HOO!!!) i'm offereing a few grades of my own for this special occasion

webber gets an A- from me for a great all around game. he had an A+ until the 4th when he missed those shots. i LOVED that pass to christie in the 3rd, full court pass, that was just beautiful.

peja gets a B- from me also because he did hit thsoe free throws. but MAN OH MAN what was going on from him in the field??? could he have BEEN more wide open late in the game??? gawd wide open and he clanks them. walton hit the nail on the head, he was like " i don't understand how as good a shooter as peja can look so bad on his shots " well it was something like that. he was right, peja is just too darn good to be clanking those wide open shots. peja also stole the ball late and got fouled, and hit the free throws that won the game for the kings.

christe gets a C from me. he did hit that huge 3 in the 4th, but that stupid flagrant, and kobe had a field day. even when doug did a good job keeping him in check, kobe still scored. instesting point, kobe has scored 40 or more twice this year and the lakers lost both times. maybe thats the magic number :D another magic number for the lakers has been allowing over or under 100 points. they've lost ever game they've given up over 100, won every game they haven't given up 100.

bibby gets a B- from me. hit a huge 3 to tie the game, but overall didn't look all that good. i LOVED it when he blocked that shot, i believe it was atkins on the fast break. oh man i was going nuts!!!!!! hahah and i loved it when walton was like " what defense bibby is playing on bryant" it was like one play, but it was funny nonetheless.

miller gets a C. he jjust didn't look good out there, got hosed a few times on foul calls, ehh it just wasn't his night.

great win for the kings. it wasn't exactly pretty IMO but the W sure is. 7 game winning streak, i LOVE that.

Webber didn't play a perfect game at all, but I still think he played very mature and intelligent for the most part, and a very good overall game. I will take that kind of performance from him most days. I was definitely on the edge of my seat for the end of this one but I felt that I shouldn't have been. Same old story though, I think if we had rebounded better it wouldn't have been nearly as close of a game. Glad to beat the Lakers and glad to see all that heart.

Pedja was a B+ since he won the game at the end and played strong defense. Webber was an A until the end but was still a solid B+ to A-. I think I actually spotted Bibby playing some D out there which was nice and Christie is a D- for his bonehead flagrant, knocking out a rebound to give the Lakers another chance and played some bad D as well.

Rick is no higher then a C because he cannot adjust to a game at all. Lakers killed us with the pick and roll with Kobe and Cook because Miller could not gaurd it. Instead of going small and bring Bobby in and putting Pedja on Cook to help on the pick, Slick Rick continued to allow the Lakers to stay in this game. Oh well

Starting to get a bit concerned about Miller, he doesn't seem to moving his feet very well on defense and needs to drive more often intead of shooting the 10-15 footers. We already have plenty of shooters, we need some inside presence from him. Our rebounding is atracious but what else is new. Also Brad's not getting any love from the refs which isn't helping either.
