Ok, well, this was no great triumph. But it was a win, and an important one to Coach Malone on his return to his hometown. And by the very act of being a tight win, an OT win, it ends up feeling more refreshing than just a standard 10pt win in regulation would have. The standout feature here of course was Jimmer likely having his career game. It was his career scoring night, but more than that, it wasn't garbagetime scoring. In the first half in particular he flat picked us up when we had little going and carried the team back into it with a crazy college Jimmermania flashback. After half Cuz would begin to click into gear, and despite shaky error filled games, both Gay and IT did enough right late (including Gay hitting the game tying shot to send it into OT) that we pulled it out.

The big ? hanging over the night is that with 3min remaining Cuz, who was our best player on the court by that time, suddenly pulled up lame. Early report was a strained hip flexor, so you just have to hope that this well timed break gives him the time to recover.

Gay ( B- ) -- This was an up-and-down game for Rudy. He had the task of guarding Melo for most of the night and Melo ended up with 36 points. He did a pretty good job staying in front of Melo and forcing him to shoot mid-range shots, but to start off the game Melo was hitting everything. At the half Melo had 22 points on 8-13 shooting, including 3-4 from 3pt land. As the game wore on Melo began missing most of those mid-range pull-ups, including going a paltry 1-8 in the 4th quarter and over-time. Rudy played a lot of minutes and he didn’t fair all that well in the 4th quarter and over-time going only 3-10, but many times it’s making the timely shot that sticks in people’s minds, and Rudy had the most important shot of the game. The Kings were down 2 with 20 seconds left in the game when Rudy decided that he was going to either win it or lose it for the Kings. He dribbled around a lot, finally got switched onto Amare, took it into the the lane and pulled-up for the game-tying shot. He then followed that up by playing good defense on Melo, resulting in a tough shot and miss to send the game into over-time. In overtime he hit an open 3pt shot to give the Kings a 3pt lead which they never let go over to get the win in NY. So he played decent defense but couldn’t stop Melo in the early going, but in the last 30 seconds of regulation he was the guy who closed out the game for his team. During the course of the game there was all sorts of ugly as he made bad passes for turn-overs, clanked wide open 3pt shots, didn’t really shoot it well going 9-22, and missed 2 free-throws in OT which would have put the Kings up by 3 possessions with 2 minutes remaining. But he gets the solid grade in this one for coming through in the clutch. Hopefully he’ll take the time off to rest and get healthy, as I still don’t think he’s fully recovered from his injury.--Uncia

Thompson ( B- ) -- This game provided some pretty accurate examples of how you should and shouldn’t use a player like Jason Thompson. Due to the small size of the Knicks starting lineup, the Kings made a conscientious effort to feed Thompson the ball inside, and it just didn’t work. I applaud Malone for trying to exploit the Knicks weaknesses instead of just matching their small ball, but Jason Thompson just isn’t a guy you can do that with. He had two turnovers tonight and both of them came early in the first quarter off of failed post attempts. It was ugly, and I think this extreme focus on whatever mismatch we had down there kind of ruined our offensive rhythm. Thompson just looked out of place for a lot of this game all-together. JT is a pretty solid man defender, but in this one he was forced to worry about either Shumpert or Prigioni on the perimeter (Gay was on Melo) and he surrendered a few more open 3’s to those guys than you’d like. He was still playing hard, but he wasn’t really giving the team a positive contribution. It started to turn around a bit in the second half, and despite the rocky start he played a huge role in our 4th quarter and eventual overtime win. Cousins left this one with about 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter and I thought Jason did an admirable job locking down the paint as we tried to pull this one out. It wasn’t spectacular, but he was really working hard on the glass, often times trying to pry rebounds away from two or three guys, and he didn’t even get all of them, but he kept working. All his hard board work would eventually culminate in overtime where he had a huge offensive rebound and putback. Just a classic Jason Thompson kind of play he’ll make one or two times a game. This wasn’t a perfect performance. Not even close, but JT showed up when it mattered and provided the kind of inside presence the Kings needed in order to get the win. --Mass

Cousins ( B ) -- On a night when the Knicks took turns going off on the Kings (notably Carmelo and Amare), Cousins had his own defensive problems - Tyson Chandler dunks. He only allowed three of them, but it was about two too many. The Kings seemingly could not solve the problem of how to guard Chandler's rolls to the basket, and Cousins overhelping was a big part of it. Cousins started out the first quarter strong offensively, going 3-4 from the floor (with the benefit of a pretty unconscionable continuation call) for 9 points, but by halftime Cousins had only two rebounds. Cousins came out strong to start the third, setting a pick for Gay and then rolling straight to the rim to be in position to grab the rebound and finish with a big stuff. But then things looked like they were about to fall apart - the Knicks made a couple of open threes, Cuz missed two shots, and it looked like he was about to sulk out of the game. He stopped giving effort on both sides of the floor, taking two plays off on offense and playing some severe matador D on a Felton drive. There was 9:45 left in the quarter, and Malone called an angry timeout, and I thought he might bench Cuz right then. But whatever choice words he had for Cuz must have worked, because he returned to the game with renewed effort after the timeout and absolutely destroyed the Knicks on the boards, grabbing a total of nine in the quarter. Cousins had only a short stint in the fourth, grabbing three more rebounds and hitting two deep jumpers before leaving the game with an apparent hip injury. But the Kings were able to pull the game out without him, and we can only hope he'll be OK. DeMarcus' rebounding in the first, defensive issues, and poor effort in the second and early third made it look like this grade was destined to be a bust, but then he turned it around spectacularly to earn a pretty decent grade. --Capt.

Thornton ( D ) -- I got to grade the Nothing Twins tonight, and they did not disappoint. A combined 37min of basically incomplete. No role, no effectiveness, no reason to be on the court. A complete waste of $10 million a year. Thornton was the better of the two, by better meaning he actually hit a shot in the second half, and seemed to be competing some of the time on defense. not that it mattered since neither guy ever guarded anybody who ever scores. To go with his complete lack of offensive role, Marcus also chipped in 0reb 0ast, and lost many of his minutes not only to Ben, but to Jimmer/IT as well, as the complete punchlessness was just ridiculous, so why not. And he was the GOOD defensive option. In fact we brought him back for the final defensive stand of regulation in what was clearly a defensive role. Said it before, but you know you have problems when you are calling on Marcus as your defensive wing stopper. These are giveup Ds for a grader. There's almost nothing to grade. You could have put me out on the court in that role and barely noticed the difference.--Brick

Thomas ( C+ ) -- Isaiah was fairly mediocre throughout regulation, luckily he pulled it together down the stretch and helped saved this trip from being a complete disaster. Started things off with a fade away from mid range that was swatted by Chandler. On the other end Felton was getting into the lane with ease. For most of this game the Knicks were getting inside with little resistance and while there's plenty of blame to go around Isaiah definitely deserves his fair share. Managed to find his way open from deep off the nice Cousins screen. Made his contribution to a sloppy first quarter with a lazy pass on the perimeter which lead to a easy fast break that Shumpert somehow manage to screw up. Helped salvage a poor shooting quarter with a nice runner as the quarter was drawing to a close. Came in mid way through the second to play a long side the hot shooting Fredette, which has been a rarely seen combo. Fairly quite during this stretch but did manage to knock down a pull up jumper while fading from mid range. On the other end Chandler and the Knicks guards were embarrassing the Kings with penetration and dishes for wide open dunks. Didn't have his jumper going for most of the second half, but did manage a couple of nice set ups in the third. Threw a decent pass to Cousins for the the dunk, unfortunately Chandler recovered to bother it. managed another nice pass that didn't end up with a assist as he found a cutting Cousins who was fouled on his way to an easy score. Part of a four point swing as he picked off a break out pass at half court then took it right to the basket finishing with the floater. Pulled down a offensive board hustling for a long rebound and then wrapped up the third by picking up a couple of free throws while driving to the basket. His shooting numbers were still trending in the wrong direction but it was actually a decent stretch for Thomas. Didn't manage to do much of anything in the fourth after reentering a long side Jimmer once again. At least he wasn't forcing things, no ugly shots or turnovers like in the past just no real impact as Gay and Jimmer got us to overtime. Didn't start the overtime off on a strong note as he forced the three, luckily managed to grab the offensive board which lead to a three from Gay. Several nice plays in the last coupe of minutes. Drew the foul driving into the paint then had a nice kick out to push the lead to six. Actually hit a jumper to put this one away, although he took it with too much time on the clock especially considering we had the lead. Luckily he made it and luckily the anti Isaiah crowd can take the night off.--Henkel

Williams ( B ) -- Williams played a lot of minutes in this game, and pretty much was on the floor for the rest of the game once Cousins went out with the injury. Like Rudy, Williams played some decent defense against Melo in the opening quarters but Melo hit just about everything that he took. There were times when he got matched up on Amare playing the undersized 4 where Amare was able to use his length to good effect. He had a couple of nice reverse slam dunks by running the floor and making nice cuts in the half-court, and he got to the line a couple of times and hit his free-throws. All in all, he was a steady contributor for the Kings, though he didn’t really have any moments where he really stood out. He picked his spots and did a good job making his shots going 5-8, and he hit the game sealing shot in overtime as IT passed it to him to avoid getting blocked and he calmly knocked down the 15ft shot from the left wing to put the Kings up by 6 points with 33 seconds to go. He didn’t rebound the ball all that well, in this one, but as he was matched up against bigger guys like Amare and Tyler it isn’t surprising. Ultimately he and Jimmer were the only two guys who were making their shots at a good rate, and that in itself was the production we needed through-out the game, to help give the Kings the win. --Uncia

McLemore ( D ) -- Ben does stubbornly refuse to emerge doesn't he? Just more empty minutes in a completely empty role, with a little dose of bad late to get the grade dropped. Totally uneventuful in the early going as Shumpert challenges nobody with his offense. Missed his first shot, a three behind a Cuz screen, and nothing at all in the first half but a couple of easy defensive rebounds as those two awesome Rising Star candidates, Ben and Hardaway Jr., had an awesome 0pt/0pt stareoff while the rest of the guys o the court played basketball. There were a couple more just what the heck dribbling issues where all of a sudden the ball just becomes detached from his hand in routine situations. Back for the final play of the 3rd. Unable to handle the ridiculously high alley oop attempt from DWill, and then absolutely blew an open layup that would have tied it. Lucky we managed to get that tie anyway, going into the All Star break wearing goat horns would have put a damper on things. Removed thereafter, and never returned. As with Thornton, there is nothing to grade here. We only play with 4 most nights. Any NBA shooting guard can do what these two guys are doing right now. Some might even make layups. --Brick

Acy ( INC ) -- Acy played four minutes in the first quarter, and spent most of that time preventing Amare from taking any shots. Then he got switched up onto Carmelo for a play and showed the world why he's not a SF despite his height - Anthony took him straight to the hoop without hesitation for a three-point play. He also replaced Cousins for the final 3.8 seconds of the third so that he could run down the floor and not guard anybody (just in case Cousins might have picked up a foul standing all by himself in the backcourt). That was the extent of it until the last two minutes of overtime, when he came in for a few offense/defense switches with the task of keeping his man (Chandler, Anthony) out of the paint. It worked. But if he hadn't picked up the foul on Carmelo, the box score wouldn't have noticed him. --Capt.

Landry ( D ) -- I was somewhat excited to see Carl Landry get extended first half minutes for what feels like the first time this season. He wasn’t very good, but maybe this was some sort of proof that he actually is healthy? This whole situation is still very much a mystery as he barely played in the second half (the Kings may have been better off without him anyway). He didn’t attempt a shot in this one, and had his +/- artificially inflated because he was on that bench unit in the second quarter when Jimmer went off. I thought he was pretty sloppy overall, and didn’t really take care of the ball the few times the Kings went to him. If this was some kind of indication that he’s healthy, he’s clearly not ready to contribute to an NBA team at the moment. --Mass

Fredette ( A+ ) -- We wouldn't have won this game without Jimmer and it easily could of gotten ugly as the same pattern of uninspired play continued. Instead out of nowhere Jimmer shows up with a career night and brings us back from the edge with a all around offensive display to begin the second quarter. Had a nice drive to get things started. Then he gets into his defender and creates some space for the nice fade away from about 10 feet out. With his confidence going hits a pull up three on the the three on one break. Follows that up a short time later with another pull three and then to quote my notes hit "another ******* three". Not satisfied decided to take it to the basket once again for another little floater. A quick game changing 6/6 for 15 pts in just under six minutes. At this point not wanting to appear selfish he got inside on a pretty little spins move in lane that resulted in a kick out three to a wide open Gay. Once the starters came back in slowed down a bit, but you can't take anything a way from him. A game changer and impressive to say the least. Played all of the fourth and I believe all of overtime. Hit big shots and played well with the game on the line. Hit a three early in the quarter then missed a open three off of a nice find by Cousins out of the post. In the final few minutes got his number called off a couple of screens and knocked down the three. Followed that up with a one of his few forces on the night. Luckily he got a chance to redeem himself and nailed the step back three with under two minutes left to cap off a career night with 24 points. Showed up with the energy we desperately needed early and then finished it off with a couple of big time threes to help us get to overtime. I'll kindly label myself a Jimmer skeptic, but even I couldn't help but feel a bit of Jimmer mania as he together a hell of a game in front of his friends and family in MSG. --Henkel

Someone refresh my memory: was this our first win on national TV since the ARCO THUNDER game on TNT?

The magic 8-ball says, "All signs point towards yes." Which means, I think so but I don't always remember whether or not a game has been televised nationally. :)

I missed most of the game and only watched the end of 4th and OT. Cuz is injured? I was wondering why JT was on the floor the rest of the night...

A wonderful experience particularly the last two periods. I had a smile on my face and I ended the game with it. Jimmer really got points for winning a game in home state and double for winning the game in his coach's home town. Sure makes the guys' six days off all the sweeter. Mine, too.

Neat-O stat of the night

Jason Ross ‏@JasonRoss1140
Kings now 11-6 when Rudy Gay scores 20 or more, and just 1-10 when he is less than 20.

Just like most individual stats, they are irrelevant.

Overall, they are 12-26 with Gay. Not an impressive number.

But I like Gay and hope he opts out. He gels well with the team. We just need to find a pass first guard to get Gay and Cousins involved more.

Anyone know how long Cousins will be out if at all?

Maybe Jimmer needs to go back to the 2 which is his natural position. IT and Jimmer played fine together. Against most teams it might work.
The Kings closed the gap and won in overtime with Cousins in the locker room.
The frontline Kings' bigs are more of a defensive liability than most people believe.
IT gets the usual 20/7 and scores when it counts, and gets a C+ grade.

Henkel, there is no need to apologize for IT success. The above comment reads as:

Teacher's comment: You got the answer right; I wish you would have done it sooner than when your time was up; thankfully you were lucky in getting the answer right.

As long as I don't have to take a class from that grader, we're good. LOL.

Great night for Jimmer. He awoke everyone from their slumber. Glad to see a team win prior to the break. And it was a team win with nearly everybody contributing.

It also appeared that the dark cloud hovering over Cousins appeared to break up sometime in the 3rd quarter. Hopefully, he'll get healthy over the break and resume his career with some professionalism.

it's always fair to criticise a player for bad shot clock management, regardless of whether or not the shot went in.

Maybe Jimmer needs to go back to the 2 which is his natural position.

The only way that makes sense in terms of getting most success from Jimmer, is if he can play with a point guard who is truly interested in looking for him as a top priority. Getting him in a flow and rhythm with multiple shots.

The only way that currently happens on a consistent basis, is if he plays with Ray McCallum

I watched the game with no expectations. Well I did expect them to lose, but that has more to do with the recent downturn of the offense and the poor play on the road. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they DID have some fight left in them ! I believe Jimmer increased his trade value, if only a little. Some team may take a chance on a guard who isnt afraid to go on a one man run. I think Marcus Thorton is a throw in at best in any trade. And I truly believe this ownership group is looking to make some noise. I am open to any trade as long as Big Cuz and Gay are not part of the deal. Everyone else can be replaced.

I honestly believe that the team came out in the 3rd and realized none of them were in danger of missing their flight to the All Star Game (except Ben.... but he seemed distracted...)

And it is always fair (and expected) to criticize IT on here no matter what.

it's not about whether or not he was criticised, but rather if he was criticised unfairly. I don't think he was, and while a lot of the bashing IT gets around these parts some times is entirely over the top (rooting for another team's player to beat him up? seriously?), pointing out that he left too much time on the clock for his last attempt isn't exactly that.
