Don't Make Me Use The Bat
UGH! This one hurts worse than last night's, because this one did not have to be. For 30 minutes of this one we played great ball. Not an exaggeration, not "great for us", but just great ball. We were up 23 in the third. And yet as a fan you were never comfortable, can never be with this team. You can just see we have no confidence. The first little swing in momentum and the composure is gone and things start falling apart in a hurry.

I'll see what I have in the theme bag for this one. For once I thought I wasn't goign to need one. Phooey.

Ok given our own fallen status, theme is going to be: Fallen Entertainement Icons

Official Boxscore

Greene ( B- ) -- shot 3-8 from the field, and 3-7 from the 3pt line, you do the math. But it all was part of a choesive offense at the time -- he had a role, and filled it. Three early possessions saw him taking threes from the same spot, but only hit 1 of 3. Did get fouled once, but then missed both FTs. Some nice play in the early 3rd using his size on the galss, and then stepping out to drain a three. Once again taken out of the game by Westphal as a team smallballed us with 3 guards, which is just a duh. He was not perfect, but he had the largest +/- on the team, and we built up a 23pt lead at one point on his watch. And then Westphal played the reed in the wind again nad let the opposing team dictate his lineups.
tom-cruise-is-NUTZ.jpg

Tom Cruise goes nuts, jumps on couches, pronounces himself an expert on psychiatry, slides into Scientology hell -- I am going to start with two absolutely enormous icons who were right there as maybe the two biggest names in Hollywood for a 20 year period from the mid-80's to mid 00s, and who just shockingly blew their good names and box office appeal right to hell.

Thompson ( C ) -- nice solid first quarter supporting on the boards, until he joined Donte by bricking both FTs in a 1-5 quarter for us (should be noted that we took 12 FTs on the night while the Hornets took 30). The solid game descended into invisibility after half as he got iced in the second quarter with that awful platoon system we have at most of our positions -- guy is playing well, but is inevitably going to get frozen out for a quarter just so the other half of the platoon can get his own minutes -- and JT never recovered. Was out there in the third while we built the lead, but did little himself -- think he had 4pts 5rebs at the end of the first quarter. It was 4pts 6rebs for the game 36 minutes later. Was reinserted late in this oen and again got nothing accomplished as West woke up just enough, and Jason's inabiulity to finish bit us again as he got a gallop to the hoop in the final minutes, missed it, got the o-reb, missed the follow etc. and we came up empty on the possession. Like the game itself, just disappointing given the way it had started.
melgibson.jpeg

Mel Gibson -- a rare A-lister who had both sexes eating out of the palm of his hand, he could be charming, intense, comedic...and then the facade crumbles and you are left with a scary alcoholic anti-Semitic religious fanatic. If I had said circa 1995 or so that this was going to be Cruise's and Gibson's eventual fate, they would have locked me in a white room ight next to them.

Cousins ( C+ ) -- we got to see much of the talent and even more of the not readiness of DeMarcus Cousins in this one. Got off to his normal strong offense/weak defensive start. Knocked down three jumpers to start the game, negating Okafor's interior defense, but you could immediately see the difference betwen Cousins and Daly as the Hornets did not hesitate to attack the rim as a play broke down with him back there, and he kept letting Okafor slip to the hoop on the other end. Picked up a dumb dumb 2nd foul challenging a Paul jumpshot 20 feet from the hoop and had to leave the game. Came back in in the second and started bullying David Anderson with his size, and came up with some great post moves on the weak *** defense of Jason Smith in the mid-2nd. Not keeping the Hornets off the glass though as they used offensive rebounds to keep vauge touch. and then picked up his third. Immediately started the third with a big aggressive drive against West that not only got him to the line but got West frustrated enough to get a technical too. Nice deciisnmaking with the pass too, letting guys go through and not moving the ball until the right guy got open. So...so far so good. But things were about to turn, and unfortunately one thing we know about DeMarcus is that depsite having the desire, when the going gets tough, when opposing teams squeee, he will screw up. And how. Drew a charge at the beginning of the 4th to get a key stop as we tried to hold on. But fumbled a key pass at the 5:00 mark letting the Hornets tie it up. And the refs really got into him calling travels in the second half -- almnost all fo his turnovers came late and helepd the Hornets immnesely in their comeback. Could not finish in traffic at the 1:00 mark on a dropodff from Reke that we just had to have, and then got called for yet another travel that killed us at the 40 second mark with us down 4 and needing a score. There was promise to this performance, but so many of the mistakes of youth that it killed us and I can't go higher with a grade -- you really could very clearly see exactly how our inexperience bit us in this one.
AMPAS+Great+Nominated+Screening+Saving+Private+0uSvEHolvWJl.jpg

Tom Sizemore -- not quite the leading man, but one hell of an actor who was in so many of the big movies of the 90s and on eveyone's A-list when another top project came along...until the rumors began to slip out about his inability to handle the lifestyle. Rampant drug problems, apparently resulting in a priapism issue (look it up if you don't know), a sex tape in which he does 4 girls, an engagement to Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss...his life just turned into a circus and his career died away with the weirdness. He's still working, but been a long time since anybody has tapped him for anything major.

Udrih ( A- ) -- was good for us early, and better late, as we did not lose this one because of our backcourt. Hit his early little pullup shots, and even managed to stay in front of Ariza on one play. Again missed that open corner three on the Reke setup however, and added another 0-3 to his career worst .268 3pt percentage. Helped us steady things in the late third with a technical FT and two little timely jumpers to stem the tide. Came up with a great steal and breakaway layup with the lead down to 3 at the 9:00 mark, one of several excellent hustle plays he made on the defensive end of the court this time. But again airballed a three off the glass off a Reke pass, and followed with a critical turnover trying to pass through 4 Hornets at the 6:00 mark. Panlcked and tried to play hero at the 1:45 mark, forcing and missing a 1 on 1 jumper with us down 3 -- you can just see the overwhelming lack of confidence leading to evertying breaking down and everybody trying to pull it out one on one down the stretches of these things.

Paul Rebuens -- note to Pee Wee: beloved (or beloathed) children's show character and adult theater pervert are not generally a marketable combo.

Evans ( B+ ) -- well if things had just not ended up so depressingly here, there was one piece of potentially great news: Reke was back. Not faux Reke, but the real McCoy. The bounce was back in his legs and he looked every bit the superstar...for 3 quarters. And his play was a driving factor in our huge lead. It just gave everybody a huge boost to have the best player on the court. But this year being this year, he couldn't sustain that into the 4th, and who knows really if this is the first day of a dramatic turnaround or just a blip. He only sat out 1 game. Basically got a grand total of 24 extra hours of rest. It should not have made this dramatic a difference. But for a game it certainly seemed to. Not sure if this means we are are going to go with the don't play a guy on back to backs thing with Reke or not. In any case, for one of the few times this season looked completely comfortable out there from the beginning. Was not pressing, was directing things and setting guys up and keeping the offense humming, and then every once in a while mixing in a vintage highlight reel take to the hoop. Could have had even more assists if not for our standard array of bricked threes on the drive and kicks too. Came back in in the late 2nd and immediately hit a three himself, and while he only hit 1-5 of those, even they seemed to be in better rhythm/make more sense when he was taking them. Used his strength to defensively stone West on a switch. Really played the superstar tongiht -- I have about three different lines in my notes about how alive he looked. On the final superstar moment he pulled a classic -- when we started the slip and the lead got down to 15 he barked out a play and then just agrgessively slammed inside and got to the line for 2 FTs to push the lead back. Where has that poise been? But then things fell apart for us, an I lost track of Reke's game. By that I mean that it was perfectly obvious through three quarters that his legs felt good and he was playing with supreme confidence. But he did little in the 4th, adn the reasons for that are key. It would actually be better if he was shut down, heck it would even be better for him to have choked, than it would for the feet to have gotten sore again. In any case, he only made a few bad plays in the collapse (although it seemed like he had slowed down and had his hands down against Paul on defense), but the Hornets were swarming him, and he made few good ones. His best in fact might in fact have come on an offensive foul when he leapt in the hair, spun, and delivered a beautiful roundhouse kick right into Belllinelli's groin. So, very good game by Reke, and potentially, potentially, promising. I have mentoned before that if he was playing like this we would be respectably bad instead of worst in the league bad even if nothing else changed. But we'll have to see if a corner has been turned, or whether it will be right back to the struggle next time out. Have to hold this grade down for the 4th quarter disappearance -- I am still grading Reke on the scale of his talent rather than his struggle so far this season, and fair or not he has to carry these bums down the stretch of these things o A's are going to be hard to hand out.
1903115-1.jpg

Winona Ryder, the freindly face of kleptomania -- who knew acting like an unemployed petty criminal was such a great way to drive a stake through the heart of an Oscar caliber acting career.

Bench

Dalembert ( C+ ) -- took a while to get into his groove, but began to dominate the glass and interior defensively as the 2nd quarter wore on. Made a mistake on the Hornets final possession of the third, challenging too high on Paul and not being able to recover back when CP3 went on the drive. Came up with a surprising swooping drive to push the lead back to 8 in the mid 4th quarter after returning. But for the umpteenth time this season that sort of highlight took on a darker shade when we then gave the ball to Daly and let him go 1 on 1 as an offense. Beno is particularly stupid about this, stubbornly clearing out sides just so he can feed Daly in the post, and you are just sitting there going what the hell?
oj-simpson-mshot.jpg

OJ -- this happened so long ago (although not so long that I have forgotten having his low speed car chase cut in in the middle of my watching Game 5 of the 1994 Finals, nor of my college girlfriend incredulously telling me of the verdict as we ran into each other on Locust Walk coming out of class) and is so noptorious that people who were not old enough probably do not understand just how much good will OJ simpson had at that time. He was "The Juice" the legendary amiable good guy football hero who played goofy clueless characters on the Naked Gun series and as an announcer. He was the guy everybody liked and would invite over to dinner. Nobody knew about the darker side, and you could hardly have picked a less likely culprit for such a gruesome fall from grace.

Head ( D ) -- I actually understood the attempts to use Head in this game -- people forget that last time we met this team Head did a tremendous defensive job on CP3, and that was the attempt here again -- to spot him in as a CP3 cooler. But not only was he ineffective in that role in either of his stints, but his offense remains completely random with terrible shot selection which hurt us in particular as we started to fall apart in the late 3rd.
bald-britney-spears-0.jpg

Britney -- girl basically suffered a mental breakdown for the world to see, but it started years before really when she clearly burned out by 21 and started desperately casting about for normalcy, the ridiculous marriages, children she was not ready to take care of, corresponding weight gain, partying, finally capped by the head shaving incident...just a complete mess. And the absolute worst star for it to happen to -- there was never much talent there. Nor brains or sophistication. It was all an illusion, once it got punctured and the airbrushed glam vixen was revealed as a chubby scared kid...

Casspi ( D ) -- this was not a good game for Omri, and almost the entire grade here is based on one timely three. Didn't do much until Dalmebert found him for a nice drop off pass into the post. Then threw up a terrible one on one turaround fadeawy brick that I think led to Westphal to call a timeout. Came in late in the third and rushed and choked a layup we needed. Then went under a screen and got scored over too. Got pulled immediately so we could go three guards. Hit a huge corner three on a Reke pass at the 4:40 mark to give us the lead back, but then made up for it by letting Bellinelli backcut behind him. Hurt rather than helped, but ate a lot of minutes that could have gone elsewhere.
michael_jackson.jpg

Michael Jackson -- took the clever way out of all the drug use, plastic surgery, and pedophile rumors that had doigged him -- he died. There is no better way to rehabilitate a celebrity's image. All of a sudden everybody was crying for a guy they were reviling only a few days beofre, and pretending like the last 15 years had never happened and he was still the King of whatever.

Landry ( C+ ) -- Carl came in, Jason went out, and all of a sudden we lost control of the defensive glass in the early 2nd. Wonder how that works? But Carl settled in and gave us good scoring punch to sustain while Demarcus and Reke were out, and got the dunk to close the first half scoring with us up 16. Think he may have had 11pts at that point. But he just disappeared after half, and late in this game the choices were an ineffective Landry (2pts after half) or an ineffective JT (0pts 1reb after half) at PF. I'm basically grading a guy just for half here.
nick-nolte-mugshot.jpg

Nick Nolte's career was I think already on the distinct downslide due to age by 2002, but this is the sort of mugshot, along with the revelation that he had been voluntarily taking GHB (the date rape drug) for years to get high, or low, or whatever he was trying to accomplish, that has a tendency to tank your rep.

Jeter ( C- ) -- got nothing accomplished in his 2nd quarter stint, missed his shots. Back in for the final possession of the first half and ran it to perfection, resulting in a Landry dunk. Could not handle Paul's strength defensively and was quickly pulled for Reke in the early 4th. Hit a meaningless three for his only points at the buzzer. Least effective stint of all of them in the weeks since he emerged -- Beno and Reke had things under control this game, and Chris Paul was just too much for him in that 1 on 1 matchup.
charlie-sheen-mug-shot-aspen-domestic-violence.jpg

Charlie Sheen -- this one is a misnomer, because as it turns out Charlie is the ultimate teflon man -- no matter how many porn stars he is with, how many prostitutes, drug charges, accusations of porn addiction...it just doesn't matter. Nothing dents his popularity. There is never a fall from grace. We should all be so lucky.

This game proves that losing is in these guy's heads. Yes they're undertalented a bit but they shouldn't be this bad. They have enough talent to be a few games under 500 if they utilized it. When you choke like this, it's mental. Winning is a habit and losing is a habit and The Kings are habitual losers at this point.

That's rather silly. Hatred? Apathy I can buy.

Apathy is what people who don't care about sports feel. I'm passionate about the Kings. But this team has transformed a passionate love into a passionate hatred. It's a relationship - a bad one - with a partner who continually finds new, amazing ways to disappoint.

I have to say this is what I've noticed most about everything going on lately. It's almost a "something's going to go wrong soon" mentality I see, particularly at the end of games, on display. It's killing us!

I know no one plays to lose, so obviously this isn't being done on purpose, but they're subconsciously doing it to themselves and it's really killing everything! Sales/Fans/Wins/Arena, etc. etc.

well put man. it's just always hard for me to understand westphals screwy rotations. why fix it if it isn't broken? ala the third. it just doesn't make sense to me why luther head of all god damn people would get any kind of consistent minutes after it was clear that we were losing momentum. jeter is right now and will most likely be for a while THE change up guy, and when you're in a rut what should you do? TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT, like possibly the lineup that built the lead maybe, but hell i'm just full of ridiculous ideas aren't I

That's not hate. That's anger methinks. Hate is taking out all your Kings gear and burning it in the backyard. Hate is never watching another game but to hope they lose. Hate is talking crap about them vonstantly to anybody who listens and sending them nastygrams etc. You're just pissed at them. Difference. You still want them to start winning, you just don't think the will.

waive head. Whenever hes in the game things go to hell. And to think i was actually praising his game a couple of threads ago.

Hot Dog!! progress!!! A complete first half, the best half game of the year, away at a good team with all their players.

A very good first 5-6 min of a 3rd quarter getting the lead up to 23. Not holding it but stretching the Hornets out till late in the 4th. This is real progress. We see how dominant Cousins can be once he learns not to make silly fouls and once he learns how to start a dribble and not travel. Both correctable but it will take some time.

Beno once again being the lead guard and doing more than expected. Tyreke playing a really good first half, learning the ways of the paint clogging NBA a bit and not letting the foot hobble him. JT is perhaps the most consistent and staying in the game. Donte, well, is Donte. Flashes of how good he can be once in awhile, sometimes 3-4 times a game. Still learning and growing. Casspi the monster off the bench, the hustler. Jeter the dynamo, the Spark Plug. It's slowing coming together a half a quarter at a time. A good game here and there, maybe two good games in span of only 3. Thats coming. But tonight was progress. Holding a big lead against a good team at home, Bulls not-with-standing, is really really tough. Especially when they have the best or one of the best 2 or 3 PG's in the game.

I agree With Cruzdude, the Kings are coming around slowly. Another guard on the team who has some experience and has a good out side shot would come in handy when teams go to a three Guard lineup like the Hornets did tonight.

The Kings missed it tonight by that || much:)

KB

I agree, they're edging closer. They almost didn't lose this one. It is awful on me to give such a lead away but they mainly played well, they're getting better. Keep up the good stuff.

I was scratching my head when Westphal decided to insert a line up of Pooh, Beno & Head when NO was making their run. He was better off playing Garcia to atleast attempt to contain Thornton. One time in the mid 3rd, I believe, it was Pooh/Beno/Head/Landry/Dalembert, Wtf?

That air balled 3 he jacked up tonight was one of the worst shots in the history of the franchise.

lol it wasn't great but we got a good offensive board from that shot.

maybe its a tactic we should go with ISO head and let him "shoot" the ball into the area below the bucket.

This is rediculous. You cleary didnt watch the game. He was our best player.

i was trying to make a point
maybe he played good and i finally see u guys here understand reke cant be a pg
and now i understand the udrih cant either
so we need a pg

I haven't seen this particular game but i saw all the last previous games. Like Evans, Beno Udrich is a very selfish player. As a PG he should get at least 10-15 assist per game and he hardly do 5. His points are coming on account of the 4 other players who are standing around and do nothing.

Alright, so I fully understand im probly wasting my time responding to this but, What????? What?

Do you know how many players average 15 assists a game? 0.

And Beno UdriH is not a selfish player. I wouldnt even call Evans a selfish player.

I consider myself a pretty negative guy when it comes to the Kings. I hate what this team is right now, but lets be realistic here.

Haha there goes any last remaining bit of your credibility.

when a pg player is playing 40 minutes i expect him to get atleast 7 assists and thats not a lot ... beno's speacilty is shooting from the middle , something the kings dont need form ther main PG , evans should be the go to guy and not the ball leader /
our team i full of players who move good without the ball and having hard time to create for themselfs ( but tyreke) and we need a PG to connect all
and what udrih does is not what the kings need
and yes , for a PG his selfish
i again say : trade him and landry
both are not doing ther job well
and we dont really need landry , they sould both be traded for a good PG
who his a good passer

Yeah, maybe so.

Man, of all the players that had things go wrong last night, I'd say Beno Udrih is the very last one I'd blame for this. The Kings absolutely did not lose this game because of Beno Udrih.

They lost because they keep falling into old habits. This loss did not surprise me in the least. The last 20 minutes of that game was a coaching nightmare.

I am profoundly pissed off at this team. I don't think the owners care a bit. Geoff Petrie: The New Elgin Baylor.

The only way I'd buy tickets to a game in Arco is if it's deeply discounted -- at least 50% -- on craigslist. The scalpers need to go away so we can determine how much actual demand there is for season tickets. If scalpers regularly lose 50% of their investment, demand for season tickets will fall by about 75%.

As unpopular as you think this team is, it's even worse than that.

The first thing the Maloofs have to do, today, is fire Geoff Petrie. By keeping Petrie, they look like Donald Sterling to me. This might address the issue that the Maloofs seem to not care. In fact, though, we have another prospect: It's not that the Maloofs don't SEEM to not care, it's that, in fact they ACTUALLY do not care. I think there's something to that. Right now, the family's biggest concern is, 3/1/2011. That completely overshadows the day-to-days at Arco Arena.

If they continue on their current path, I can only believe that the Maloofs have stopped caring. We don't want that.
